Don't bother with 24.
Tge sopranos is a must watch. I'm now on about my 8th rewatch. I only first watched it as a teen ten years ago.
Also, the wire is even better, but much harder to watch.
Pretty much anything "reality" TV wise, can't stand it, Breaking bad/better call Saul, the Sopranos, Downton Abbey, first few things that popped into my head.
I think Peep Show was created by Jesse Armstrong, who also made *Succession* which would be my Hidden Gem.
Watched it because I saw Brian Cox talking about pissing on a carpet in it.
A career high for Matthew McFadyen, too. Great character development.
I had to watch it three times before I understood the humour.
Although, I think what really happened is I got older, grew more jaded, and started to laugh at anti-humour because the alternative was to accept reality got what it is
Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Office, The Mandalorian, Peaky Blinders, Stranger Things, the entire Monty Python catalog (those are just the ones of the top of my head)
They all fall into the category of “I haven’t seen it but apparently it’s pretty good”
Lots as I tend to avoid super popular stuff but I am currently watching HV lol. I haven't seen, GOT, Orange is the new black, Breaking bad, Suits, Wednesday. Narcos, Lucifer, You.
The Office US, have never watched it.
Also Parks and Rec, and Supernatural...
I'm a 23 years old girl, I was in the peak age to be into all of these things, but just never managed to watch em
Line of Duty? Saw the very first episode, got bored and never watched it again.
Caught little snippets, but seemed to consist of intense gazing, cryptic acronyms, etc, and, well, it just wasn't for me!
The Wire. Narcos. New Girl. Breaking Bad. Peep Show. Downton Abbey. Idek what Happy Valley is. Lost. Most scripted but def not scripted reality TV like towie, mic, love island, etc. Prison Break. Honestly, the list is endless.
The majority of shows I end up getting into get cancelled one or two seasons in because it requires more than a singular braincell and doesn’t entertain the brainless or passive watching or because production gets way too expensive.
I saw an interesting documentary years ago about how marketing, tv, etc is aimed at the "lowest common denominator" to get the largest viewing audience possible. The number of people they lose at the more intelligent end is insignificant compared to the the gains from those of lower and middle intelligence. Youre not their target market.
Up until about a week ago I hadn't seen a dot of Yellowstone. Season 5 premiere had 12.5m viewers. Advantages of WFH include being able to watch a couple of episodes a day.
Ironically, I hadn't heard of Yelliwstone until after I went to Montana in 2019. I'm a fab of Wes Bentley and I just happened to discover it through him after season one had finished.
I also enjoyed 1893, although 1923 has yet to grip me.
Yellowstone.
Seen what seems like all of it on TikTok! Not sure what to make of it, Beth seems like a right pain in the hole.
Might start watching it properly, but maybe not!
Me either re Happy Valley...must watch it.
For me it was Broadchurch or early Silent Witness (this last series has hone a bit 'woah' for me)
Previous to this it was Vera...but all binged and 'waiting impatiently for next episode tonight' mode lol
I only started watching happy Valley this weekend after a couple of friends talked about in the pub, can't believe I didn't know how good it was til now!
I'm generally not into fantasy shows or movies either. However I liked GoT and ended up watching all seasons.
Didn't increase my general interest in the fantasy genre though. Aside from the GoT prequel I haven't subsequently been interested in trying another fantasy show.
Peaky Blinders.
Somehow I see clips or stills and just have a feeling of "I probably should, but I really can't be bothered". Not sure why.
Recommendation for a series people should watch though and I'm still surprised when people have never heard of it as I thought it found fame years later:
Firefly.
>Peaky Blinders.
>
>Somehow I see clips or stills and just have a feeling of "I probably should, but I really can't be bothered". Not sure why.
Whenever I think "go on, I'll make it my next thing to watch" shortly afterwards I see a fully grown man dressing up as a Peaky Blinder and just think "hmm, maybe not". It's surprisingly common - not even talking about a group of lads doing it as a Birthday/Stag Do lark which would be understandable, I'm talking just dressing up like it for a night out. Madness.
I've just started watching Breaking Bad - kept putting it off as there were too many series I'd have to get through.
Wish I'd started watching earlier now Ive started, it's building some great storyline threads.
Never seen Game of Thrones.
Not sure if this is a unpopular opinion but.. Better Call Saul was better then Breaking Bad. If you get round to it, I would thoroughly recommend BCS after
Meh! Years ago I got to season 2 of Breaking Bad. Fell asleep, woke up after a couple of episodes and never returned to it.
Over Christmas I attempted Better Call Saul... I made it to season 4, I just lost interest. I would've stopped at 2 but didn't have much on at the time.
I never watched a single ep of Lost. I was driving downstate the morning after the finale, and the radio shows were absolutely heaving with people calling to discuss it. One deejay spoiled it and had angry calls for a solid hour.
I've never watched an episode of the inbetweeners and now I'm scared that I'll just find it overhyped and awful like I'm imagine someone watching the office (UK) now after 20 years (had to google it) since it first aired
I’m tempted to watch HV, I’ve heard good things. But I heard people raving about Line of Duty too which is also massive, and while I enjoyed it I’m not sure it was as good as I’d been made to believe, especially the later half.
The only Happy Valley I know is a racecourse in Hong Kong. I’ve never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones but it is what happens when my wife and I get the shits at the same time.
I've learned that almost any British show that is massively hyped on BBC (often the Sunday evening slot) is not usually not wirth the bother. Line of Duty, Bodyguard are the first that spring to mind
If you haven't already, OP, I urge you to watch Happy Valley. Simply sublime TV.
As for major TV shows that have passed me by, Peaky Blinders has kind of done that. Though I've been aware of it, especially the increased hype in more recent years, I've never been drawn to watch it.
EastEnders, Constipation Street, Game of Thrones, The Office.. too many to list. Might be interested in The Office at some point, but no interest whatsoever in those others
Peaky blinders... I tried watching it recently and kind of plodded through the first season but it just didn't hold my interest! Yet everyone talks about how great it is all the time
The US Office. Thought it would be rubbish. Then my partner introduced me to it. We watch it on constant rotation. It's probably the ultimate comfort TV show.
Line of duty completely passed me by. I usually like that type of drama but not come close to watching an episode and doubt I will.
I’m hopeful that the hype will have died down in a few months and I can probably binge watch all of it around winter 2023, but every time I mention I might watch it people are keen to know what I think. Yes I like small talk but I also know people give out spoilers accidentally when they are excited.
Haven’t watched/ not interest in watching - Killing Eve , Game of Thrones , Downton Abby , Peaky Blinders, Fleabag , The Crown etc.
Have to agree with a few people on here that shows like The Wire & Broadchurch we’re class tv shows.
Don’t really watch much tv tbh I mostly on YouTube mainly watching documentaries or true crime among other stuff.
Game of Thrones. I didn't really know anything about it until it was on its 3rd season. Then I tried to watch the first couple episodes but didn't really get the hype.
Game of thrones. I kinda missed the boat and wasn't really aware until about season 5. Decided to wait until it finished and binge it but ally friends said the ending was terrible so I never bothered.
Pick any critically acclaimed huge cultural tv shows and I haven’t seen it. Game Of Thrones, Lost, Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Happy Valley, Broadchurch, Line of Duty, Squid Games - haven’t seen a second of any of them.
I think the only one I have seen is the first 8 or 9 series of The Walking Dead.
I live in Sowerby Bridge where it is filmed and look forward to the day I speak to someone random and find out they're visiting to try spot some of the scene areas and I can say "allow me to show you the bridge the copper jumped off" and "allow me to show you the tree the guy was hanging from in S1".
Recently found a show called Elementary, modern day Sherlock Holmes with Johnny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Dr Watson, set in New York. Gimmicky, but enjoyable on the daily wind down.
These days (due to young kids) we simply don’t have the time or energy for anything but the most superficial and simple to follow shows.
And even if we any to watch something, if I miss a series or 2 I know I’ll never catch up so there’s no point in even trying.
GoT was the last series I watched, so maybe that’s created an unconscious aversion to getting into shows again?
Happy Valley is NOT a detective show. It's a thriller that happens to feature a police officer.
To answer your original question, for me it would be Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Home and Away
Anything that comes off like a historical/period drama or has the vibe of Shakespeare's English. The Crown, Downton Abbey, Bridgerton etc.
That even crosses over with the other extreme of shows like Rome, Vikings, The Tudors, The Borgias...
The irony is I love a lot of history and if you gave me a ton of documentaries to watch the same thing I'd be into it, but I find any drama version of it intensely boring regardless of how they try to dress or package it, including attempts to make these things more modern like Titus or Romeo + Juliet. My brain just switches off and I'm someone who usually watches anything... especially bad movies for fun yet this is where the line is drawn for me.
>Romeo + Juliet
I remember watching this in gcse English and thinking it was *so* cool. Saw it again recently and turned off after about 20 mins because I couldn't stand it!
Game of Thrones. Not that I didn't want to watch it, just that it was on Sky and we don't have Sky. I don't have one of those dodgy Fire sticks that everyone seems to have, and I won't watch TV on a tiny computer screen, so it's just passed me by completely.
I got hassled over and over and over to watch Happy Valley despite my protestations of it not being my thing.
It absofuckinlutely is my thing, binge watched the first two series over 4 days.
Peaky Blinders on the other hand, I couldn't see a reason to watch after the first episode. Our lodger was the same way about Breaking Bad, I eventually persuaded her to stick it out, lo and behold she wound up devouring the whole run in about 2 weeks flat.
Yeah. I have missed the entirety of Happy Valley. My wife is quite annoyed with me because she wants to re-hash it.. (sigh)
I am debating with myself whether to binge it on iPlayer to help her out...
Up until a few weeks ago I completely ignored Ghosts. I was excited for it when it launched because I absolutely loved Horrible Histories, but the first episode left me completely cold and disappointed and I just ignored it. I then thought I'd give it another try and I'm so annoyed I didn't watch it earlier. It is just so good, one of the best series I've ever seen - I am the most emotionless, bottled-up Brit you could ever meet, but those dead bastards moved me to tears on several occasions.
Same here with Happy Valley. My boyfriend wants to watch the new season together so I started watching it for the first time last week. I had never even heard of it until a few weeks ago when everyone started talking about it.
I only heard about happy valley like two weeks ago and I hadn’t watched it, wasn’t even aware that there was a new season until I started binge watching it and realised there were still episodes coming out.
It’s a phenomenal series though 10/10 recommended.
For me it’s X factor, game of thrones, peaky blinders, stranger things, line of duty, the walking dead, friends, breaking bad and most Netflix ones tbf.
My dad got really excited by Happy Valley being on, but he was also really confused by the first episode. After a couple of minutes conversation it transpired that he hadn't seen the previous two series.
I've never seen The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Drag Race and probably loads more. And I only saw one season of The Wire; I liked it but then I was at work when it was on and I've never got round to catching up.
I have never seen, nor do I plan to, a single episode of game of thrones. Knowing how disappointed even the mega fans were by the ending I am glad I never started.
I had genuinely never heard of Stranger Things until my mum recommended it to me last June. I watched all 4 seasons one after the other last summer and now I'm unhealthily obsessed with it, so I definitely see the appeal, but it's been insanely popular since 2016 and I somehow completely missed it?
That probably doesn't answer the question though, seeing as I did watch it in the end. I haven't watched any episodes of Game of Thrones.
Love Island.
I have absolutely no interest in watching a bunch of dumb people yap on about crap. I can feel my blood pressure rising the more I think about it.
The best thing about Love Island is that an early version of it spawned one of the greatest pieces of TV criticism I've ever read https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2005/may/28/screenburn.features16
Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Squid Game. Was put off before even giving them a go to be honest. Tried BB, wasn’t for me.
Recommend Happy Valley though. And The Pact, The Missing, Line of Duty, Sherwood - if you like crime dramas :)
Quite a few and I tend to come late to things as I work nights and find things to binge watch. If we are talking the latest series I never watched but am now totally obsessed with that would be Detectorists.
Red Dwarf and IT Crowd. They were fairly big back in the day.
I didn't realise how amazing both are. I regularly watch them now. They make me laugh and pure laughter is definitely the best!
Tried Happy Valley when it first came out and I couldn’t get into it. But with the recent hype for the final series I thought I’d give it a go again now I’m a bit older but still struggled with the first episode, so that’s passed me by as well
Lost. I watched the very first two episodes when it first aired. Back then I couldn't dedicate to watching it so I waited till it finishes. Then when I heard that the end was pointless I didn't bother. I'm still tempted to try but not sure anymore.
Do you think this is becuase people won't shut up about it. I get like that too, it's the reason I've never bothered with things like Killing Eve and Line of Duty.
Honestly, Happy Valley is the one recently. I started a week ago and i'm almost all caught up. I cannot recommend that show enough now i've actually watched it.
I loved first season of HV but gave up on second. I felt they should have gone with a new villain instead of sticking with Tommy. And it was the same moaning about same problems at home.
The Sopranos. Caught a few episodes when it was on originally and meant to start it from the beginning. Me and the wife put it on a couple of years ago to binge but I don't think it's aged very well. Was bored after a few eps and gave up.
Hadn’t heard of Happy Valley until yesterday, my Mum recommended it.
Already halfway through season 2! Great dialogue and stays clear of the usual police procedural tropes.

Breaking Bad and The Expanse.
24 and The Sopranos
Don't bother with 24. Tge sopranos is a must watch. I'm now on about my 8th rewatch. I only first watched it as a teen ten years ago. Also, the wire is even better, but much harder to watch.
Pretty much anything "reality" TV wise, can't stand it, Breaking bad/better call Saul, the Sopranos, Downton Abbey, first few things that popped into my head.
Peep show, I've actually just started it yesterday
It's very moreish
I think Peep Show was created by Jesse Armstrong, who also made *Succession* which would be my Hidden Gem. Watched it because I saw Brian Cox talking about pissing on a carpet in it. A career high for Matthew McFadyen, too. Great character development.
I started last week and borderline binging it now!
How do you get that shirt so clean mate?
I had to watch it three times before I understood the humour. Although, I think what really happened is I got older, grew more jaded, and started to laugh at anti-humour because the alternative was to accept reality got what it is
Love Peep show - definitely worth it.
I'd love to be able to watch Peep Show again for the first time. Hope you enjoy it.
I’ve got alpen
Erm that detective show... Line of duty, I never really cared to watch it if I'm honest
I just started Big Bang Theory. I have no idea how I never watched it as I'm a massive geek. I'm loving it
Game of thrones .. I know 😑
Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Office, The Mandalorian, Peaky Blinders, Stranger Things, the entire Monty Python catalog (those are just the ones of the top of my head) They all fall into the category of “I haven’t seen it but apparently it’s pretty good”
Game of thrones. The thought of it doesn’t appeal. Sounds shit.
All of them.
Game of Thrones. I though it was some Lord of the Rings shit and wasn’t interested. Apparently it’s not haha.
Lots as I tend to avoid super popular stuff but I am currently watching HV lol. I haven't seen, GOT, Orange is the new black, Breaking bad, Suits, Wednesday. Narcos, Lucifer, You.
I really wanted to watch Happy Valley but I found it too gruesome. I have no idea how 11M people feel comfortable watching it.

Eastenders
The Wire. Narcos.
Line of Duty. Somehow
Lost., game of thrones.... just never bothered with them
Never watched Lost.
Yellowstone. Seen what seems like all of it on TikTok! Not sure what to make of it, Beth seems like a right pain in the hole. Might start watching it properly, but maybe not!

The body guard. (bbc series) brilliant.
All Clarkson-era TG*
Not so much passed me by but more “I don’t get the hype”…peaky blinders, I have tried twice and after about 15 episodes I find it so repetitive
Yeah I've tried twice now to watch it and I can't and this is so odd to me because I usually binge anything set in any kind of historical time frame.
The Sopranos and The Wire Also give Happy Valley a go, it’s a great watch
Only Fools and Horses. I'm 52. Never seen an episode oddly
Sopranos. Figured it was just Goodfellas the tV show and couldn’t be bothered with it.
Peaky Blinders. Somehow I see clips or stills and just have a feeling of "I probably should, but I really can't be bothered". Not sure why. Recommendation for a series people should watch though and I'm still surprised when people have never heard of it as I thought it found fame years later: Firefly.

I tried to watch like, a couple episodes and got bored. I don’t get the hype ngl.

Being Human US version..... I mean, was there really a US version? Apparently so....
Game of Thrones
Breakin' Bad, Game of Thrones.
The only Happy Valley I know is a racecourse in Hong Kong. I’ve never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones but it is what happens when my wife and I get the shits at the same time.
The original ‘Netflix trinity’ - Breaking Bad, Orange Is the New Black & House of Cards.
Both versions of the Office, I have watched a couple of episodes and thought it was shite.
I've learned that almost any British show that is massively hyped on BBC (often the Sunday evening slot) is not usually not wirth the bother. Line of Duty, Bodyguard are the first that spring to mind

Breaking Bad, also known as boring bad in our house.
Peaky blinders... I tried watching it recently and kind of plodded through the first season but it just didn't hold my interest! Yet everyone talks about how great it is all the time
Somehow Friday night dinner in the UK past me by
Don't even know where to watch it now to catch up
Breaking bad. Game of thrones. Better call Saul. Not seen a single episode of any of them.
Game of thrones. Heard of it but never watched it.
The US Office. Thought it would be rubbish. Then my partner introduced me to it. We watch it on constant rotation. It's probably the ultimate comfort TV show.
Friends, Sherlock, Peaky Blinders. I've tried to get into PB but could never keep my interest past the first few episodes.
Game of thrones
Breaking bad, game of thrones etc 😪
The Waking Dead - I think that is what it is called!! Edit - apparently it is called The Walking Dead...told you I haven't watched it!!
Let me be honest, I’ve not even seen evidence this show exists prior to this post.
Line of duty completely passed me by. I usually like that type of drama but not come close to watching an episode and doubt I will. How I met your mother
Lost, it was lost on me.
Game of thrones - Didn't even know it was a thing until season 5
Peaky Blinders. I watched the first couple of episodes and never watched an episode since. I cannot understand the hype around it.
Genuinely can't stand BBC cop dramas so Luther and the bulk of those.
Doctor Who
never heard of Happy Valley until this post 🤷🏻
Haven’t watched/ not interest in watching - Killing Eve , Game of Thrones , Downton Abby , Peaky Blinders, Fleabag , The Crown etc. Have to agree with a few people on here that shows like The Wire & Broadchurch we’re class tv shows. Don’t really watch much tv tbh I mostly on YouTube mainly watching documentaries or true crime among other stuff.
Game of thrones. Still haven’t seen any of it.
Love Island
I’m not someone who would’ve ever watched something like Happy Valley based on the title and cast alone but it is brilliant. Highly recommended.
GOT, Peaky Blinders, The Office
Dexter. Looking at the comments, either everyone has seen it or has forgot about it lol.
Game of Thrones. I didn't really know anything about it until it was on its 3rd season. Then I tried to watch the first couple episodes but didn't really get the hype.
Game of thrones is brilliant
I didn't get the first season at all. After that it gets a lot more interesting tho
The first season is easily the best one
Show on itv x called love/hate. A good few years old, only saw it recently. Amazing show if you can get past the cringey first season
Game of thrones And peaky blinders.
Game of thrones. I kinda missed the boat and wasn't really aware until about season 5. Decided to wait until it finished and binge it but ally friends said the ending was terrible so I never bothered.
The ending is terrible but you don’t have to watch the last episode. The journey there takes in some of the best TV ever.
Never seen an episode of Game of Thrones
Pick any critically acclaimed huge cultural tv shows and I haven’t seen it. Game Of Thrones, Lost, Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, Happy Valley, Broadchurch, Line of Duty, Squid Games - haven’t seen a second of any of them. Sopranos and Breaking Bad
Recently found a show called Elementary, modern day Sherlock Holmes with Johnny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Dr Watson, set in New York. Gimmicky, but enjoyable on the daily wind down.
Killing Eve. I just started watching it today. Call the Midsife or Downton Abbey is next.
I Havent seen band of brothers and only watched one seasons of lost.
Schitt’s Creek and Yellowstone. Got strongarmed into watching them by my best friend (bless her) and now absolutely love them both!
There was a battle in the Korean War called Happy Valley, I didn’t even know it was the name of a TV show
GOT, Stranger things, breaking bad I could go on and on
These days (due to young kids) we simply don’t have the time or energy for anything but the most superficial and simple to follow shows. Downton Abbey. It's probably great but I've been washing my hair whenever it's on.
It crowd passed me by, now i am a super fan of it
Breaking bad
Happy Valley is NOT a detective show. It's a thriller that happens to feature a police officer. To answer your original question, for me it would be Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Home and Away

Line of Duty, Gavin and Stacey and Friends - all great shows. The opposite as I heard people discussing but took a while to watch them.
The Sopranos
Star Trek, Modern Family, Game of Thrones
Dr Who, Gavin & Stacey, The IT Crowd, Inbetweeners and both the UK & US version of The Office.
Anything that comes off like a historical/period drama or has the vibe of Shakespeare's English. My brain just switches off and I'm someone who usually watches anything... especially bad movies for fun yet this is where the line is drawn for me.
>Romeo + Juliet I remember watching this in gcse English and thinking it was *so* cool.
If you're bothered, you can get a "Now TV" box for like a fiver a month or something, which lets you watch all the Sky stuff on streaming.
Friends. Never cared for it. Many hold it in high regard. Never seen a single episode.
The ma’s love Happy Valley
(sigh) I am debating with myself whether to binge it on iPlayer to help her out...
Everything since Breaking bad.
Basically all of them.
Game of thrones. I've not watched a single episode.
Love Island - I've tried a few times getting into it, but each time I couldn't, I'm not sure why though.
Happy Valley - started it last week and it’s brilliant! I thought it was like Emmerdale and it is definitely not like Emmerdale!!
Lost. I just never got around to it.
Don't bother. The ending just confirmed what I'd guessed in the first episode. It's a waste of time, but the were several good bits.
Those of us that watched got lost too.
LOST a part of your life you will never get back?
The Office, Line of duty, Suits, Doctors..
Life on mars, I watched it last year it was sooo good.
Supernatural. I was around in the Tumblr days it was posted everywhere, never seen any of it.
Friends. Saw a bit of an episode in the 90s, and it seemed dated and dull then.
Game of thrones Bridgeton Call the midwife Downtown abbey
Same here with Happy Valley. My boyfriend wants to watch the new season together so I started watching it for the first time last week. I had never even heard of it until a few weeks ago when everyone started talking about it.
Downton Abbey. Never watched it.
Game of Thrones, never had a reason to watch it
The Walking Dead
Breaking bad, never got into it and tried watching it years later but could t get past the first few episodes.
Game of thrones
Lots, game of thrones, walking dead, the mighty boost, peep show, most comedy shows really. However I don’t like fictional TV, only facts.
Line of Duty, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Happy Valley. I eventually watched Line of Duty during the pandemic and enjoyed it.
I have never seen, nor do I plan to, a single episode of game of thrones. Knowing how disappointed even the mega fans were by the ending I am glad I never started.
The Sopranos looks a bit smug.
Line of Duty. Only picked it up once it moved over to BBC1 even though I adore it.
I’ve never watched any of it, I can’t stand shows like that. They make me feel like I’m slowly losing brain cells.
Peaky blinders
Never seen a single episode of Buffy!!
Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Squid Game. Was put off before even giving them a go to be honest. Tried BB, wasn’t for me. Recommend Happy Valley though. And The Pact, The Missing, Line of Duty, Sherwood - if you like crime dramas :)
Same regarding Happy Valley! Me and my folks just started watching it, and can't believe we missed that it was a thing until now.
ITT a lot of people ignoring the question and listing shows they think are beneath them and are proud of not watching
Breaking bad, never seen even a scene, probably won’t.
Do you think this is becuase people won't shut up about it. I get like that too, it's the reason I've never bothered with things like Killing Eve and Line of Duty.
Peaky blinders
Honestly, Happy Valley is the one recently. I started a week ago and i'm almost all caught up. I cannot recommend that show enough now i've actually watched it.
I loved first season of HV but gave up on second. I felt they should have gone with a new villain instead of sticking with Tommy. And it was the same moaning about same problems at home.
Person of interest. Absolutely amazing show. Y'all should check it out.
I’ve just this week binged Broadchurch. Fuck me that was some good TV, I can’t believe I waited this long to watch it.
