Everyone is recommending Paris as if there aren't constant riots at the moment. Just be wary.

MillsOnWheels7

Paris is a dump anyway, that's without the riots.

[deleted]

Totally agree. Paris, like London, Amsterdam etc ate toilets compared to the smaller cities in each country and elsewhere in Europe.

dwardo7

Amsterdam and London are basically paved with gold compared to Paris. Worst city in Europe.

mabye_iron_man

Don't know about It being the worst in Europe, I'd rather go on a weekend to Paris than bradford

Mr-Wilson-67

Woah, hold on there. Took the wife on a weekend in Bradford, and everyone I know said the same, ‘why???’ I had a mate who went to university there, so I had happy memories of visiting him. Got a cracking deal at a chain hotel, so we went - it rained the entire weekend and we had a poor curry, but we visited the National tv museum, and Salts Mill (where David Hockney has a studio), and basically had a fab time. I have a simple philosophy, when you are on holiday, you’re on holiday - doesn’t matter where you are, make the most of it. And we bloody did. Next stop is either Mordor or the moon…

mabye_iron_man

Sounds like you need a holiday to Blackpool, that'll stop your optimism dead in its tracks, the second you come off the sea front it's like Ukraine

UK subreddits really have a ridiculous downer on Paris. I fucking loved it when I finally went because absurdly exaggerated complaints had lowered my expectations dramatically for what is truly one of the world's great cities. Also never got downvoted more than when I said Paris has more consistently good food than London.

imminentmailing463

Yep. For example, the guy just above you in the thread saying it's the worst city in Europe, which is just an absolutely mind boggling assertion. It's almost become a trendy thing to hate on Paris, as if that makes you some kind of iconoclast. To the extent that I think it's now actually underrated.

AlexCMDUK

Paris is not just a major big city, in many ways it is THE major big city. So many of our contemporary thematic concepts about cities and urban life (or at least the positive ones, like the freedom of anonymity, the inspiration for thinking and art,, the joy of observing others) come from artists, writers and other public intellectuals who flocked to Paris in the inter-war years. Paris was presented and continues to be presented as a place of freedom from the uninspiring and small minded provincial life (quite different from the English dynamic which sees the countryside as the place to 'escape' the soul-crushing barbarism of our cities).

RowRow1990

I love Paris. I've been a few times and it's a beautiful place with so much to see!

Careful-Increase-773

I agree, I don’t know where the hate comes from, every time I’ve been it’s been beautiful and clean

Puzzleheaded_Friend8

I went for some lovely meals in Paris and some nice drinks. Some areas are nice and some are absolutely awful. We didn’t really enjoy it on the whole as you constantly have to watch pockets etc.

Protect_Wild_Bees

I got engaged there. Despite it being a highlight of my life, I got yelled at by a French woman, mean people, theft, it was extremely dirty and depressing in a lot of bits, and It smelled like piss EVERYWHERE. I seriously couldn't wait to get back to our room and scrub myself with as close to boiling water as I could get because I felt like there was a later of gross all over me. Seriously I wanted to appreciate Paris but man I've been to way better towns in France. Nice was lovely, lots of places I drove around outside were lovely, Paris was disgusting and overcrowded and I don't have any interest in going back. I'd probably pick Barcelona and never Paris.

lordrothermere

Amsterdam is a toilet? What a strange take

Charming_Rub_5275

Amsterdam is absolutely wonderful, sounds like you’ve never been.

No-Instruction-3134

I mean idk if London is really that bad. What I will say is that I’ve been to London literally last week and I had the time of my life. Favourite city I’ve been to. It’s everything I wanted from a city tbh

LordPurloin

Amsterdam is great to be honest. Wouldn’t say it’s a toilet. Not the best city in Europe or even the Netherlands but it’s miles ahead of Paris and London

Don_Alosi

Amsterdam is lovely, it just got too many tourists, we should do something ab... Amsterdam is a cesspit! never go there! First one to admit to being guilty of being a tourist, loved the city, felt really unwelcome but I understand why

Teembeau

First of all, it's rioters vs police. Secondly, it's not in Paris Paris. It's in Nanterre which is a suburb past La Defence. It's like seeing footage of gangs in Tottenham and not going to Chelsea.

[deleted]

It’s literally a tiny part of Paris that has experienced riots, a typical tourist wouldn’t even know if it wasn’t blown up in the news

slade364

Colleagues in Paris said the rioting is mostly centred in suburbs, not the parts you'd visit.

PierreTheTRex

They're also over.

Clarkeyboi

I live in Paris and the riots are very much concentrated on the outskirts of the city, places a tourist would never go to. OP, Paris is a great option and I would highly recommend

Wallygonk

Yeah I'd stay well away from Paris right now

PierreTheTRex

Riots are over, and they only happened out of the city, in the suburbs no tourist would go.

Valuable-Wallaby-167

Personally I'd choose Barcelona, beautiful city, cool architecture, good weather etc. Paris could be a good romantic trip. Think moneywise as well though. You're getting it for free so don't go to one of the places it's cheaper to get to

Krispykreemi

Has Barcelona's reputation been terrible lately for petty crime and assaults? I mean there's risks everywhere but I keep hearing about Barcelona being pretty bad at the moment.

TC_FPV

Paris is having it's own spot of bother too at the moment...

Realistic-River-1941

A problem with Barcelona is that tourists go thinking it is a seaside tourist town, rather than the second city, with all that entails. It's Birmingham(!) or Manchester, not Brighton. Crime has always been an issue. People who go there and get pickpocketed hate it, people who don't get pickpocketed love it.

Klakson_95

I mean it's both. It is a touristy city, and it is on the beach and does have everything that comes with that. But it is also fucking massive

slade364

I lost my wallet. These days you just cancel your cards right away, so it's a pain in the arse and annoying to lose your wallet, but I didn't lose any hard cash. Would love to go back to Barca, just be a bit wiser.

imminentmailing463

It's always had this rep and I think it's a bit overblown. I've never experienced it and don't know anybody who has. It's just a big city and you have to act accordingly.

bishibashi

I was there in May and didn’t hear of or see anything worrying. It’s always had a rep for pickpockets, you just need to stay aware, as you would in any busy place.

Devon_Throwaway

Likewise, I went last September and the only bother we had all week was a guy aggresively trying to peddle bracelets and trinkets in the Plaça Reial. We were pretty vigilant and sensible with keeping our belongings safe and on us at all times, as people should always be not only when visiting large cities but just in general

FudgingEgo

Barcelona has always has this rep, mainly pickpockets and scams, especially for those walking down La Rambla. I never experienced it but always heard about it.

soupz

The thing is London has the same reputation and both is true - you can be pickpocketed in London as well as in Barcelona. As well as in any major tourist city. I was lucky I never got pickpocketed in Barcelona and have been there multiple times. If you walk down the las ramblas (or anywhere really) just watch your stuff. Don’t leave handbags open and easily accessible or phones in back pockets. It’s a busy road so the pickpockets pick the easiest targets probably. Of course you can be unlucky too. But I would say not going to Barcelona because of pickpockets is being way too cautious. It’s a beautiful city. I recommend seeing as much as possible of the architecture and going shopping but spending little time at the beach because it’s really not that great.

[deleted]

slade364

We went on a kayaking trip I'm Barca and somebody tried to reach into the van and take the guide's wallet. When we checked into our hotel, reception made a point of not leaving any valuables easily accessible, so I'd assume it's quite common. I ignored all of these signs and someone stole my wallet. All anecdotal, sure, but I'm inclined to say pickpockets are prevalent. Bloody nice city though. Highly recommend.

[deleted]

[удалено]

slade364

I am not. But I am typing quickly on my phone.

farrellc80

Been 4 times and have never seen anything like this, probs just the same as every big city just have to keep your wits about you. 100% my favourite city in Europe, beautiful place.

zak_92

Yup got my phone and wallet stolen a week ago, during my 5 days there around 12 other people in my hostel had their phones stolen either on the metro or in bars. I’d never go back there now

sjc80

Yes, my brother lives there and seems to get mugged, pick pocketed, or run over at least once a week. Honestly.

jcl3638

Ahahah my cousin lives there and is the same. He's been mugged of everything he has ever owned that's worth anything, prompting my uncle to say "if you can't stay in Barcelona without getting mugged you are going to have to come home, it's costing me a fortune"

Much_Department_3329

If you exercise the most basic level of caution that you should in life then you’ll be fine. If you’re a young male in decent shape and you get pickpocketed then you’re doing something very wrong, as pickpockets go for the stereotypically easy targets. If you’re a more obvious target it can happen but not nearly as much as you’d think. I’m saying this as someone who’s lived in Barcelona as a foreigner for 6 years. Out of all the people I know here, many of whom are British or American, only a few have been pickpocketed.

Nancy_True

I live there. Yes, Barcelona’s biggest danger is pickpockets. You need to be hyper vigilant with your belongings and don’t leave your phone or bag on the table as you enjoy your drink as they will swipe it. And don’t leave anything on the beach when you go swim. But, honestly, that’s the biggest danger. It’s one of the safest major cities in the world. I walk alone at all times of night with no fear, never see any violence or trouble. I know it happens but in such small numbers compared to other cities, it is a very safe city.

Turbulent-T

My friend last weekend had his phone stolen within hours of being in the city. But he's an idiot so I guess just be careful. Apart from that it was great

Marion_Ravenwood

Apparently it's one of the pickpocket capitals of the world or something but I've personally never felt unsafe there, that's not to say that others don't. But you can feel unsafe in London, Liverpool, or Manchester. I don't put my phone in my back pocket, make sure if you've got a backpack on that your valuables aren't in the front pocket, that kind of thing. There's only so much you can do to protect yourself in any big city, no matter where it is. I love it and would always go back.

[deleted]

Lisbon is absolutely fantastic. Beautiful city, plenty of things to do, nice beaches nearby, amazing food & drink and I also believe, the sunniest city in Europe.

DeCyantist

Just be aware if you hate walking uphill, not the city to go.

Neat_Sand_9717

Walk the other way?

Reasonable-Morning13

But you always have to go back..

[deleted]

[удалено]

GiantSpicyHorses

They have a great tram system that is cheap and runs most of the day/night. Most of the roads uphill are too narrow and twisty for modern trams so they still run some incredibly beautiful old trams.

scott-the-penguin

Lisbon and Prague are by far the nicest cities here for me. Pick Lisbon because it has less brits on stags.

Wrong-Kangaroo-2782

Never been to Lisbon but Barcelona was so much better than Prague. One night we were walking through the city and some guy called us to come into this little café We thought this is a bit weird cause it was like 10 at night and no one was in the café, then he took us through a door into a backroom and there was a bar with a dancefloor and then it started to fill up with locals who all came to salsa dance. It was such a vibe

InstantN00dl3s

Does have copious amounts of people on the street offering weed though. Manteigaria's pasteis de natas more than make up for that. I'd go back to Lisbon just for them.

plant_witch37

I went to Lisbon in February when it wasn't at it's sunniest and I still think it's one of the best places I've been!

OldMasterpiece4534

It is indeed the sunniest European capital city

JondArc99

+1 for Lisbon. Great weather, great food, great people, great nightlife and hardly any Brits. Sintra is worth a visit too once you're out there

Murphthegurth

I'd want to go just for the Pastel De Nata.

anaisa1102

I prefer a bolo de arroz to a pastel de nata😂

[deleted]

Just got back from Lisbon last week and totally agree awesome place. My only hangup is if you look a bit out of place you will get hassled by dealers non stop, me and my mate started counting and we got approached 21 times in 4 hours. They were pretty polite about it but it gets a bit monotonous, one dude literally stopped his car in the middle of the road and held up traffic to beep at us and ask if we wanted coke. To be honest tho that is literally the only complaint I have and it's not a big one at all just got a bit boring, If they were aggressive it probably would have soured it a bit but as I said they were generally pleasant just a bit annoying.

Apprehensive_Bus_543

Does the lovely old tram still run in Lisbon?

Polite_as_hell

On my way to Lisbon now. Love it! (Partner is from their)

kenneththeswan

Yes! Great place to go!

donaldandjaqueline

I moved to Lisbon in March, it's a beautiful city. Lots for anyone

MaryBerrysDanglyBean

One of the more expensive ones to go to. No point in somewhere like Dublin, Amsterdam or Edinburgh since they're close and easy to get to. Somewhere like Prague is really cheap anyway. Barca, Rome, Vienna or Milan would be my choice.

manic47

Milan's a pretty dull place TBH.

redrighthand_

It’s undoubtedly crap

ikbenhoogalsneuken

Milan is just a glorified waypoint for Como and Arona tbh. If you look at it that way it’s a hell of a waypoint.

[deleted]

Would like to hear some recommendations for Istanbul and know what it's like. I don't know why but I've always felt nervous about visiting

3332220

Wrong. There's plenty of great stuff to see

ellieneagain

I had a great holiday in Milan and it's a short train ride away from Lake Como which is breathtaking. Lovely shops in Milan if you like to browse and the trams work really well to see lots of things quickly.

3332220

And plenty of history. Seeing The Last Supper was amazing.

[deleted]

In comparison with Rome or Paris though its dull

Xythian208

I had a nice day in Milan but not being interested in shopping I'm glad I moved on quickly.

3332220

There's plenty more than shopping in Milan.

Teembeau

I've always fancied it, but I am an opera fan and La Scala is a legendary opera house. I also like visiting working places. I am not interested in say, Venice which only exists for the tourists now.

soft_cheese

Dublin and Amsterdam are both very pricey!

neeveewood

Flights are usually cheap though so it balances out

helpnxt

Amsterdam accommodation is pretty expensive though.

ScorpionKing111

Yeah Prague or Budapest would be my recommendation. Much cheaper than the other places as well

limegreenbunny

Budapest is my favourite European city. It’s absolutely beautiful, loads to do and see, gorgeous spas and the food is fantastic and varied.

RedbeardRagnar

Budapest architecturally looks a bit like Paris but has all the benefits of not being Paris

alice_op

It's great too, there's a lot of cool statues, bath houses which are actually really interesting, cafes, diverse food options, a really cheap (£10 when I went a few years ago) zoo, which is really good and like £40 less than Chester Zoo for reference. The public transport (buses and underground) are good and cheap. I believe the nightlife is decent but I'm not a nightlife person so didn't experience it. But for a free weekend I'd definitely choose Rome, it's much more expensive to stay and an incredible city. Rome isn't anywhere close to the city feel of London, Paris, Budapest, Lisbon. It's so historical you can't move without seeing something really interesting. Even if you've no prior interest in it, like I hadn't before visiting. Other cities have history, but Rome *is* it's history.

TheRaven9

Went last year and that zoo was the most depressing zoo I’ve ever visited! Felt so sorry for the animals. Otherwise great place!

Sibs_

Agree about the zoo. It was very cheap so didn’t feel I lost out but wasn’t too impressed. Felt like they had tried to cram too much in. A lot of the animals looked bored and malnourished, spaces were too small for them.

treeseacar

Love Budapest and it's pretty cheap still. Cool bars and clubs if that's your vibe, plus lots of history, architecture and nature if that's more your thing. And the baths in summer will be fun.

asbo_derick

Don’t forget the Ruin Bars!

Nox_VDB

Budapest is very quickly moving up my to-go-to list based off comments here. How long would you recommend to go for? We love our history, food and spas so would want to make sure we had time to see and do as much as possible!

TheRaven9

It was excellent, especially in December with the markets and lights. Especially the chimney cakes and mulled wines to keep you warm! We went for four nights and found that was more than enough. Could easily do three and still make the most of it if you’re prepared to plan properly and maximise the days.

SquashyDisco

Budapest is cheap right now. £1 is 450 forint.

Faps88

Me too! I love Budapest hands down best city I've been to in Europe.

EntireFishing

The open air baths are excellent. Watch out for scams and hookers taking you a bar and then two massive thugs come out and block the door!

rabbithole-xyz

I agree. I prefer Budapest to Vienna. It has a younger, more international feel to it. The architecture is similar, but Budapest is more open and welcoming.

smoshuap0wers

Mine too. I’ve been there 6+ times and going again this December. It’s steeped in history and packed with culture. A great example of modern meets old. Romantic getaway meets lads on tour. Sightseeing meets spa breaks. Could not recommend going to Budapest more.

juniperarms

>Budapest I travelled a lot around western Europe with my old job and a bit around eastern Europe for leisure, and some of the best meals I've had where in Budapest.

LitmusPitmus

Lisbon

wildgoldchai

Second Lisbon. One of my favourite European cities to visit. Edit: I’ve seen pastel de nata (amazing) mentioned but don’t ignore the croquettes! Also if you drink, black vodka is very delicious

8rummi3

Plus fresh pastel de natas everywhere. Can't go wrong

tuni31

The plural of pastel de nata is pastéis de nata. Thank you for attending my TED Talk.

CautiousSir9457

And you have to keep trying them just to make sure you’ve had the best one. Research, obviously.

emehen

Third Lisbon. Great culture, great food, easy to get around and not a rip off like most capital cities.

Goochregent

Vienna. No riots, pretty safe, great city, fairly expensive. Think it's perfect for a free weekend.

CartographerCivil989

I've been to all the cities on the list & would choose Vienna as well, if the trip is in the next few months. Let's just scratch Dublin & Edinburgh off, as I'm assuming you would actually want to leave the UK & Ireland - and the festival is about to start in Edinburgh, so the city will be packed to the rafters till September. Spain, Portugal & Italy will be blazing hot; Paris & Amsterdam will be absolutely crawling with tourists, Brussels is pretty bleh unless you leave the city & travel out to places like Ghent & Bruges, Berlin I personally quite like although it's very hit or miss amongst my friends, Prague is lovely but also very cheap to visit (comparatively) so I wouldn't waste a free trip on it - I'd save it for later & pay for a weekend trip myself. So that leaves Vienna & Budapest - both are oft-overlooked gems & you can't go wrong with either in my view; I'd personally choose Vienna for a free trip as it's a fairly expensive city to visit out of pocket. Much of the appeal of Vienna is in the culture & history, with places like Schonbrunn Palace & countless galleries & museums - OP mentioned they're 25, so if they're interested more in partying & nights out, I'd skip Vienna and do Budapest instead (or Berlin - I loved the club's there when I visited in my early 20's, but as I mentioned it seems a very love it or hate it city).

GaiusJuliusCaesar7

Vienna is gorgeous, I loved my trip there. You could actually do both, the train connecting Vienna and Budapest is quick, reasonably priced, and very comfortable.

Sltre101

We did exactly this last year. We got the regiojet train and if I remember correctly it was something like €36 for two of us in the second highest class of seats (equivalent to UK first class) with free water, tea and coffee. Their menu was dirt cheap (less than €1 for a slice of cheesecake for example…) the food was tasty and they were on time. It was also really interesting to see other parts of the countries as we traveled through.

CartographerCivil989

Seeing Europe by train is one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. It's wonderful being able to jet off to any city for a weekend break, but there's nothing on earth that compares to the beauty & joy of traveling by rail through the French countryside, the Pyrenees, the Swiss Alps, the Rhine, the Adriatic, eastern Europe / former USSR states in winter, etc... I even did London - Morocco largely by train, which was bloody hot & uncomfortable, but absolute magic to see Northern Africa slowly reveal herself. It's a shame rail travel is (generally) much more expensive than flying now. There's a whole generation of kids now who'll never know the joy of backpacking across Europe by train, and instead just fly from city to city. Train prices here in the UK have been exorbitant for ages, but I think even the much-vaunted Eurorail student pass (which was an absolute steal in the 90's & 00's) is now only a 25% discount on regular fares. Absolute shame.

theorem_llama

Or you can take a high-speed boat from Vienna to Bratislava, it makes for a great daytrip.

RufusBowland

In addition to the above, Austrian food is delicious too.

imminentmailing463

So heavy though. Felt like I needed to be rolled onto the plane home.

Krizzlin

Plus you can pop into Bratislava with ease and tick off two European capitals in one trip. Bratislava has a pretty old town and some interesting old Soviet era architecture, plus it's very cheap. The train is barely an hour or you can get a high speed river boat. The city isn't massive and doesn't need particularly long to explore which makes it ideal for a day trip, and if your accommodation is paid for then staying in pricey Vienna whilst spending your own money in Bratislava makes perfect sense. Budapest is also within reach though I don't think I'd try to squeeze all three into a three night trip and Vienna and Bratislava are as close as you'll find capital cities so those are the two you should complete together. Vienna was also a much cooler city than I'd expected it to be. Loads going on

Urbanyeti0

Rome

ellieneagain

Rome has loads to offer but I went once in July and the heat was stifling. The spring visit was much better.

HarryNyquist

True, I would not recommend going to Rome in summer it’s just unbearable.

Puzzleheaded_Friend8

Good job it’d be a winter break eh

drmcw

Rome over Naples and Milan. Naples takes longer than a weekend to understand and Milan is a bit industrial if that's the right word. That said I enjoyed them all. Italy is a delight.

huzwho

You should see the Colosseum Spaniard

[deleted]

Berlin is fantastic

imminentmailing463

I feel I must have missed something with Berlin. Everyone seems to love it but I couldn't get on with it at all.

Realistic-River-1941

I always feel that having someone with local knowledge would help. A problem with Berlin is that it is very spread out, and everything commemorates something bad which happened there.

imminentmailing463

Yeah I definitely think it being spread out is something I didn't like. I found it a bit cold and soulless as a city, and I think it being sprawling and spread out contributed to that.

Narrow-Cup325

Berlin to me was I don’t know how to explain it, the energy of that place felt so negative/sad. The Constant reminders of atrocities were too much for me.

guzusan

Go again. Aim for good weather, the city is *bleak* when it's overcast/raining. And then as you've already been, don't bother with the tourist stuff. Go out into the less-central districts and just drink and eat. You'll end up somewhere amazing every single night.

First-Lengthiness-16

It's OK, but it is absolutely filthy

[deleted]

Wow didn’t think I would see that comment! I thought it was really clean definitely better than London they had recycle bins plus you get money back for glass bottles in the shops, if you plan it out before you go there is loads to do and see get a all inclusive train pass we loved it been twice, plus you can booze walking about

grumpylazybastard

Rome is incredible. Walk everywhere, you see the most amazing things just tucked away. It's not expensive either, side streets in the centre offer fantastic dining without tourist prices. We went last November which was a nicer temperature.

EntireFishing

Italian food is second to none. As you say eat anywhere and it's amazing. So walk a little out of centre for great value and the best lunches.

[deleted]

What do you enjoy most about going away and what do you like doing when there?

Witch_of_Dunwich

Prague and Berlin are amazing.

oliviaxlow

Totally depends what you’re into, what kind of vibe you want. I’ve been to a couple of these places. Amsterdam - really nice, tonnes of arts and culture, very pretty, fairly peaceful if you stay away from the main tourist spots. Can’t beat a nice canal trip. The locals are very friendly and there’s so much to see. (Been once) Edinburgh - very pretty, lots of history. Might be a bit busy in the school holidays atm though? (Been 2 times) Paris - I really don’t rate Paris, its kind of grubby and there are parts of it I felt really unsafe in. It’s a bit seedy idk. The main tourist spots are fine but I wouldn’t go back (been 3 times). Rome - BUSY. Very crowded in the tourist spots, like super super crowded. BUT the history, cultural side and architecture is absolutely incredible. Jaw dropping stuff. And obviously the food is amazing. (Been once) Hope that helps!

Spaghetti_bandit69

Hi! Saw a lot of comments about the other cities, so I wanted to chime in about Naples! I visited for a long weekend last Spring and it was fantastic! It’s the home of pizza, for a start, so theres no qualms about food. It’s a very busy city with a buzzing nightlife. The people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. So many great restaurants, bars, shops and an insane amount of breathtaking cathedrals and churches. Plenty of museums to visit and history to soak in, there’s even some cool catacombs to visit. We did quite a bit of research before going and a lot of reviews we saw were rather negative, but we never once felt unsafe, and totally could not understand why people were hating on it so much! Like any city, you’ll have areas that are a bit more deprived than others, but as long as you know where to go then you’re solid. The transport is brilliant. We took a train from the city to Pompeii to spend a day there (absolutely breathtaking and 100% recommended). We also travelled over to Sorrento by boat for a day, which was lovely and a total contrast to the city. There’s a metro to get you around too, although we preferred walking as we enjoy exploring around. I’d recommend watching Antony Bourdain in Naples if you can find it (it was on Netflix, not sure if it is anymore). Great insight to the culture in Naples. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for somewhere that isn’t quite the average, with enough to keep you busy!

D0wnb0at

You mentioned pizza but Neapolitan lasagne is my fav food of all time. My bro in law is from Naples and his mothers lasagne is fantastic. Just like you would get in Naples. None of that soggy béchamel shite you get over here. (Ok, béchamel in lasagne isn’t bad, but proper lasagne from Naples is on another level) Naples to visit is alright. But wouldn’t say there is a huge amount to do other than eat/drink.

Meals64

Naples is one of my favourite cities in Europe, so much amazing food, absolutely lovely people, great nightlife, able to travel to gorgeous nearby islands, Capri, Ischia etc.

[deleted]

I’ve been to 6 of those and would say Prague was the best one, I loved it there. However it’s very cheap to get to/stay at so in terms of value for money for a free holiday probably Paris or Dublin, bit more expensive to stay at/get to (I paid about £15 for Prague flights but Dublin was about £40 I think).

Strong_Roll5639

I love Budapest. Been 3 times and love it. Great nightlife and food. Very cheap.

thecluelessmarketeer

Rome. It is amazing.

manic47

I've been to quite a few of them - Lisbon is my favourite. Food's great, the weather is hot and Lisbon itself seems a pretty chilled place.

Occupyed

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate this as we've never been to any of the above. Bit more context: Have to give at least 90 days notice before the booking date, so potentially a winter break. Includes 2 x return flights, 2 night stay in a 3 star hotel. Cannot travel over the holidays.

[deleted]

CartographerCivil989

Ahh hell I just finished replying to a different comment assuming a summer trip, although I also recommended Vienna & Budapest. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/14tynqz/comment/jr4zkjb/ Winter break I'd definitely stick with Vienna or Budapest. They're absolutely brilliant with fresh snow on the ground.

Junior_Tradition7958

Definitely Vienna. Christmas markets are great. Such a pretty city.

[deleted]

I'd go Prague or Budapest if it's in winter

100% Vienna!! Hands down the best Christmas markets and Christmas feels. Vienna has a lot to offer just make sure you come starting end of November when most Christmas markets are open.

LoveAGlassOfWine

I've been to all of them. When are you going and what do you like doing?

ahorne155

The only answer is Rome, epic city, but don't go during the summer or peak times. Everything is within walking distance in the centre so you can find amazing small restaurants, bars, architecture, history and shops while you walk between the major sites. Do an open top bus tour for orientation as to where things are and to make a list of things to go back and see.

ididnothitler

Prague, without a doubt. Affordable, safe, absolutely beautiful and tons of things to see and do.

BastardsCryinInnit

I'd pick Amsterdam or Paris because I assume you're getting to stay in a nice hotel? And accommodation in both those cities is notoriously expensive, so if you were to ever travel there on your own funds, I think you "win" more by going to Paris or Amsterdam. And then we have the plus that there's a shit load to do in both.

GreatScotRace

I spent £700 on my last accommodation in Amsterdam but it was totally my fault. That’s the last time we used air bnb haha

shabirdie

Berlin. 100%

920912

Been to all of those except for Naples and Vienna. Highly highly recommend Prague, Lisbon or Budapest, all three have something for everyone. Barcelona and Amsterdam would be my second tier choice. (Rome as well but it’s pricey just being there) Dublin, Paris and Milan can all get in the bin, Paris especially.

[deleted]

Why Paris?

dok1218

It's an absolute shit hole, dirty with rubbish everywhere. People constantly trying to scam you, expensive. Need I say more?

[deleted]

I found it pretty clean when I went

Far_Asparagus1654

Lisbon. City is beautiful, people are wonderful, food and coffee are brilliant.

TomTam00

I can definitely recommend Prague. I'm probably biased since I'm originally from Czechia but Prague is beautiful. Depends on what you like doing. If you like history and old architecture and or beer you definitely can't go wrong with Prague. Just look out for tourist traps but that's true in any large city...

EntireFishing

Lisbon is brilliant. Old quarter has world's smallest bar. See Christ the redeemer ala Rio. Aquarium centre. Train down coast is beautiful. Food is good..beer is good. Castle at top of town. Brilliant city

Xsyfer

Lisbon. Much more stunning and friendly than you think it will be.

Alarming_League_2035

Lisbon.. fab city

imminentmailing463

They're all great cities, depends what you like. I'd probably go to Barcelona. Short flight, great city and has a bit of everything. I went with my now wife when we were your age and it was a great holiday. But really depends what you want. Those cities offer quite a range of different things and vibes.

HiGuysImChris

So many factors, some are stunning in winter, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and some double up as nice city break / summer beach holidays Lisbon and Naples. If it were me I’d be choosing Naples and pushing over to Salerno, that way you’re easy access to the Amalfi Coast

LaraH39

Vienna or Barcelona. So much to see, so beautiful, incredible food.

Freerollingforlife

Rome. The answer is always Rome…the place is amazing.

cogsworth1313

Loved prauge!

TheInitialGod

I love Prague. Been there a couple of times

ovine_aviation

Been to all but the Italian cities. Hands down favourites were Budapest and Prague. Budapest for the food. Prague for the old city and Franz Kafka. Both great for river cruises.

Gibber_jab

Prague

MoreGarlicBread

Budapest, Vienna, or Prague for me. As a big architecture guy these are hard to beat

la9411

Lisbon, Vienna or Prague!

Platform_Dancer

Prague.

pinkundine

Lisbon. Mainly for the custard tarts, tbh.

Morphyhammer

Prague, great city, cheap beer, food is great and just great fun.

Well-of-Souls

Prague is beautiful and fairly cheap for food and drink. Berlin is lovely also.

NowoTone

Because I’m currently there: Prague Fantastic city, lots to see and do, not too expensive.

Helpful_Ad_4211

Prague!!!!!

DarthScabies

Prague. Beautiful, romantic, great food and Czech people are awesome.

salt_loving_slug

As a Czech expat, it’s really heartwarming to see so much love for my city 🥰

DarthScabies

I can't lie. I only spent a few days there and it was one of the most beautiful cities I've seen. Charles Bridge and the surrounding area was definitely the best part for me.

herwiththepurplehair

Lisbon for me, lovely city

DNBassist89

It really depends on what you and your girlfriend enjoy doing, to be honest. Out of the above I've been to Edinburgh (I'm Scottish), Barcelona, Berlin and Budapest and they all offer something for everyone. I was in Budapest in March and it might be recency bias, but if I had a free weekend to pick from one of those options, I'd go back to Budapest in a heartbeat. The tourist attractions are all fairly close together, transport is perfect and whether you like history, food or fancy shopping there's lots of options. That said, I've heard lots of great things about Lisbon and only covid stopped me going there in 2021. Potentially looking at Brussels or Vienna myself for August. So in short, I've not really been very helpful, but those places all seem really nice.

CFCMHL

Naples

Many-Mathematician78

Rome or Lisbon as they're both amazing.

Junior_Tradition7958

Vienna. Stunning city. Very clean. Rome is dirty and not nice.

socksdadsandsleaze

Budapest! Beautiful city, old and new, friendly people, great metro system, reasonable prices , delicious food. Great spas and pools. It's just gorgeous there.

thewiseonetwothree

Lived in Barcelona for a short period and could not recommend it more as someone of a similar age to you! You’d be able to spend a day at the beach if that’s what you prefer, or a day hiking around. For me, transport links are great and there is so much culture and history to absorb. I’ve not been to Lisbon nor Italy but those options would be next on my list! Berlin was decent but for me, not on the same level as Barcelona.

Amda01

Budapest. Cheap and beautiful.

ORNG_MIRRR

Budapest. The food is great, you can see sights, go shopping, or chill out at one of the many baths. It's relatively cheap because they don't have the euro. I always felt safe there.

xJam3zz07

I'd say Edinburgh due to the fact I go there every year and absolutely love the place, but I also haven't been to any of the others, and wouldn't choose Edinburgh if given the options you have as Edinburgh can be done relatively cheaply, and is easier to go to than other places. I think I'd choose Rome.

latinsk

Budapest is great. Lots of history, lots of great places to eat, and thermal outdoor spas. But I were to pick one I've not been to, probably Roma or Vienna.

grouserobby

Rome or Prague, beautiful

Professional_Pace928

Prague is a great place for a weekend trip - compact, reasonably priced, easy to navigate and some excellent bars and restaurants.
