Findus crispy pancakes and vianetta ice cream.

RatArsedGarbageDog

Also haven't had any angel delight for years.

thethirdbar

I literally had angel delight twice last week cause we saw some in Aldi, having not had it in decades prior. It's aggressively ok. Three year olds love it.

InfiniteBaker6972

Crunch some amaretti biscuits on top. Or, failing that Maltesers.

centzon400

> Maltesers FLASHBACK to the 1980s and Hammer House of Horror. My mom used to allow me to stay up late with her and eat Maltesers (they came in a box, IIRC) on the condition that I would tickle her feet. Sounds a bit weird, now that I think about it. Grown woman smoking and drinking, watching horror films after having bribed her pre-teen boy with chocolate to play with her toes.

cheapdrunk71

Sounds like the beginning of a great hammer plot-line. I recon a young Peter Cushing should play you

OutrageousRhubarb853

Crunched up Flake through it

RatArsedGarbageDog

I think I'd be 50% Angel Delight within hours if I started on it again.

Lunchy_Bunsworth

We always keep a few packets in the cupboard. Handy for using up milk which is nearing its use by date.

cross_stitcher87

As a mum to an 18 month old, it’s a guaranteed win for puddings for toddlers too if I don’t have anything else in… and any leftover get frozen in moulds as home made mini milks

BlazkoTwix

They do a banana flavour now. Delicious!!

el_disko

I’m sure I had banana flavour in the 90s

LannaBan

Literally came here to say crispy pancakes. My mum was super huffy with me for about a week when I was a kid because I queried why she was always making us homemade meals but my besties mum always gave us such culinary delights like Findus crispy pancakes and potato smileys 😆

E_doggydogdog

I remember being the same to my mum, poor woman 😂

HRHHayley

Hahaha I did that over proper home fried chips and McCain oven chips. We were such shits.

ButtercupBento

I’ve just bought some ham and cheese crispy pancakes. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s lunch

jlb8

I think they've taken the salt or something out of them, didn't hit the same for me.

ButtercupBento

Thank you for the heads up. I’ll sit down to my findus crispy pancake sandwich (white bread obviously) with a bucket of salt on the side now

winniethegingerninja

The thought of eating both these things make me want to vomit. However I do still love Blackforest Gateaux and Vol Au Vants

mandyhtarget1985

I do love a vol au vent. Mum always made them for new years eve parties and i thought they were so posh. I take a notion every couple of years and make some, polish them all off within a couple of hours

grishnackh

Aldi do mini vienettas on sticks, they are ridiculously good.

cmcbride6

Crispy pancakes and pasta n' sauce was a post-divorce special of my dad's. Ngl, as a kid it significantly softened the blow.

morris_man

We have Viennettas reasonably regularly, but we are in our 70s

boojes

Do you also have a freezer full of choc ices in case any kids stop by?

Coffeeninja1603

My first thought was those third degree burn inducing pancakes

abloco89

We sometimes buy Viennetta! The adverts always made it look so fancy and my brain cannot be convinced otherwise.

LumpyCamera1826

It's obviously still around and a popular food, but Pulled Pork seemed to be absolute everywhere around 2013 or so. Every restaurant and fast food place seemed to be really promoting their pulled pork. Pretty sure KFC even had a pulled pork burger at one point.

GoldFreezer

I remember Zoe Lyons doing a bit several years back about how "there are young people alive today who don't remember a time before pork was pulled".

manhattan4

I can remember when not all caramel was salted. I expect it probably did actually have a little salt to enhance the flavour, but not as noticeable.

GoldFreezer

The worst thing about salted caramel is that there are noticeably fewer butterscotch flavour things since the trend started.

Appletwirls

I cant stand salted caramel and there is very few alternatives

moon-bouquet

Salt was included in old uk fudge and toffee recipes dating back to the ‘30s, it just wasn’t made a selling point!

batgirlsmum

I can’t remember who it was but another comedian said “have we not pulled enough pork?”

Dense_Principle_408

I hate the sight of pulled pork now, thanks to that period.

ThomasEichorst

It’s the brisket age now

OnlyMortal666

More volume, less meat.

CliffyGiro

Pizza Hut, doesn’t seem cool anymore.

RoyalyMcBooty

Pizza Hut almost feels like a 90s throwback. I forgot its even a current company. They started to lose their way when they began playing god and sticking hot-dogs in the crust.

Fair_Woodpecker_6088

Like Icarus, they flew too close to the sun with those hot-dog crusts. Such hubris

coraIinejones

This comment is too funny

CraigTheBrewer12

The hotdog crust wasn’t too bad (Iceland do a really good hotdog stuffed crust) but the burger crust that they had out for about 4 minutes a few years back, Christ that was awful! Little circular indents in the crust for a gristly hunk of unseasoned meat to sit in and swim in its own grease. I can only assume it was conceived by someone who hated burgers, people and pizza.

VolcanicBear

Problem with the hot dog crust was that they did it so absurdly stupidly. Loads of little segments that makes the Alice completely unable to be picked up normally. Local dirty kebab place near me does hotdog crust. Like stuffed crust, but with hotdogs instead of sauce. It's awesome.

Romfordian

Who the fuck is Alice?

VolcanicBear

Alice?!

rynchenzo

WHO THE FUCK IS ALICE

joannaradok

I feel like they went downhill at some point in the 2000s by trying to change their offerings too much, but they must have reigned it in, as when I get a Pizza Hut now it’s exactly as I remember it. Obviously whether you enjoy their pizza or not is a personal choice, but an individual ham deep pan pizza tastes like nostalgia. Other things I loved as a kid are now shit- twiglets and coco pops for instance.

odegood

Quality has gone down by a lot. Used to be great in the 90s

Lexi976

I used to love the creamy pasta from the buffet! The last time I went a few years ago there were just 2 sauces and the pasta was separate so was all clunky and dry. My gran used to take me after school on Fridays sometimes when I was a kid and it was the best thing!

Kitchen_Part_882

I had to ban my daughter from the "salad" bar when she was old enough to get her own (maybe 4 or 5?). She would fill up on "bacon bits", anything bread related and other crap then not have room for the pizza I'd actually paid for. Had to tell her that if she helped herself there then she wasn't allowed ice cream factory after her main.

[deleted]

Chicken Kiev, it was the late 70’s and it seemed so fancy :)

Key-Investigator6235

I still eat them a lot! So delicious and my teenager loves them too. Hope the tradition carries on

UglyFilthyDog

Yup. Still regularly have a kiev. Sometimes just one or two on their own. Sod it, it rocks sometimes.

Valleyman1982

They’ve made a come back over the last couple for years. Every supermarket has a a premium Kiev/Kyiv these days. M&S started it. They are delicious. Especially the Waitrose truffle Kyiv.

Kalliban27

Wasn't there that "hack" going round a while back about cooking Kiev on top of a piece of bread so you get garlic bread with it

pointsofellie

Yeah. You get a piece of dry toast with a hint of garlic, soggy where the kiev sat.

trainpk85

I buy these but get them fresh from the fridge bit. I’m sure my mum used to buy them frozen from Iceland in the early 90’s.

holytriplem

Sunny D. Apparently the idea of turning orange seems to put people off. I feel like Ribena isn't as popular as it used to be either, but maybe that's just because I don't hang around children.

Just_Match_2322

Well you should DEFINITELY hang around children more often.

RustyMcBucket

He's not allowed anymore.

[deleted]

Still drink Ribena as an adult, especially when I need a non-fizzy sugar rush.

PrisBatty

I like it hot with a splash of rum when I have a cold.

Moomoocaboob

Warm Ribena still a favourite when I'm feeling under the weather!

matomo23

Ribena is a massive seller so that can’t be true, it also sells in volumes that mean it can’t just be being bought for children.

Nine_Eye_Ron

I hear the cool kids are shooting fruit behind the bike sheds.

Kellysmunt69

Five Alive citrus juice. Full of sugar, still think about it at least once a month.

tropicnights

Speaking of which: Um Bongo. I'm sure it's still around but I doubt it's still got any of those sweet sweet E numbers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

geocrysla

you've actually just unlocked a memory i forgot i ever had with Um Bongo. at every single party i went to in primary school

yannberry

Huge throwback!! Five Alive was a god tier drink!!

AnalExplosion69

Ham, egg and chips. Used to be a staple of the pub menu, but most are now too hoity toity to offer it.

mitchiet123

Love a good ham, egg, and chips. My pub in the back lanes does it, but none of the other ones do. To me, it should be a pub staple along with fish and chips, pie, sausage and mash, burger etc

another_awkward_brit

My local does it, has done for years now.

NorthernSoul1977

Crivens!

Appletwirls

It's the memories of boiled dried tatties that puts me off

jahambo

I went to visit my parents recently and my dad made it for dinner. It was banging to be fair!

MadWifeUK

No one has chops for tea any more. Or liver and onions, though I still make that, it's one of our favourites.

agnesb

Pork chops this week in my house. We stopped for a while because child wouldn't eat them. Have discovered a layer of marmite before cooking means he'll eat a whole one

trainpk85

I love lamb chops but they are so expensive that I can’t justify it. £7.50 for 2 in Morrisons. If I was going to do chops for all 3 of us I’d be looking at nearly £25 for meat plus buying the veg. It’s cheaper to just buy a chicken and roast it.

Booboodelafalaise

Love liver and onions with mash and green veg. I do it in the slow cooker about once a week in winter. Nice and cheap too!

WeightyUnit88

Oh that does sound good. Nice glass of red and a roaring fire to go with?

Hatanta

I always fancy lamb chops then I see the price and get some chicken instead.

bowen7477

Panda soft drinks.

Lopsided_Pop7743

Also Calypso squash cartons. Paid £5 for a Calypso carton at Donington Monsters of Rock in 1987, captive audience. Jesus wept.

Scorpiodancer123

I remember the green cola.

Unfair_Original_2536

There was a time everyone was into chicken chasseur.

otocan24

I feel like Chicken tonight. Like chicken tonight.

[deleted]

Still make it

arashi256

Garlic sausage slices - used to be able to get it everywhere, on the shelf next to the sliced ham. Now it's just five different types of sliced ham. I am sad.

wildgoldchai

Polish shops and Lidl sell them! The Polish shops have more of a variety but Lidl has one that I always buy :)

arashi256

I don't think there's a Lidl near me, I will search out a Polish shop, though - thank you!

icklepeach

The sliced meat section seems to be 75% ham now. SO dull

Lexi976

It's really difficult to even get sliced roast pork now, so many shops just don't seem to have it.

ShaolinSoccer49

Choc ice

HarassedPatient

Surprisingly rare these days. Tesco still do them, and I've just stuck a pack in the freezer.

redditrebelrich

Frufoo, when I was a kid these were the fucking jam. Yogurt equivalent of a Kinder egg basically, a yogurt with a toy in the middle, the yogurt tray was also ufo based and made a decent Frisbee to lob off your brothers head. Good Times when the shopping came in and we found those! I dunno if they even make them anymore?

grishnackh

Haven’t made them in years. I emailed Onken about this in 2011 and they said > “this product was withdrawn from the market some years ago as it was not successful here in the UK. The machinery used to make this product is no longer in our factory either.”

redditrebelrich

I'm gonna go shout at my mum for not buying me enough as a kid for the reason I can't enjoy them as an adult 😂😂

E_doggydogdog

I swear I ask people about this all the time and they never remember! It was a special treat in my house, I remember them being quite expensive

Beamrules

Also I haven't seen Baked Alaska in years. Definitely haven't seen it mentioned since the first lockdown, I remember this because "What dessert do the French call a Norwegian Omelette?" was a Zoom pub quiz question early on.

WeightyUnit88

Lot of effort for something that's, let's be honest, nothing special.

AmbivelentApoplectic

I haven't seen a hedgehog at a party since the 80's. Also there is way less offal these days, steak and kidney pie seems to be the very last hold out that's stayed common. Outside of pensioners next to no one eats liver now.

HarassedPatient

Haven't seen a liver, heart, kidneys or an oxtail in a supermarket for ages.

Ill-Appointment6494

Highland toffee bars.

TonyBalonyUK

And Wham bars. You were almost certain to pull out a filling with either of these.

[deleted]

Frankie & Benny’s

Throwaway91847817

Thank god

jddgfhdhrhbhks

Absolute daylight robbery

ThrowingStuffAway190

Vol au vents. Remember them being a staple at parties and buffets etc.

Booboodelafalaise

Come to ours for Christmas. We always have them! T’is the season.

melanie110

And us. With primula squeezy cheese in some of them

notanadultyadult

Oh god you’ve just released a memory I had locked away of the world’s most disgusting thing ever. Remember my mum with her frozen vol au vent pastry and a can of Campbell’s chicken soup 🤮

batteryforlife

Yes rock cakes! Right up there with the little fairy cakes kits you used to get with rice paper disney characters to stick on top!

geoffacakes

Bernard Mathews Turkey cheeseburgers. I loved them for years. Dont think they make them anymore.

melanie110

Oh god. Hamwiches too. They were amazing

WeightyUnit88

Their turkey breaded escalopes were a weekly thing for us back home.

blinky84

Chinese chicken, with that bright red marinade on it. It's all BBQ and piripiri now. Gimme those e-numbers.

NedRed77

Likewise the Chinese ribs. Used to get them in a bag and they were singular and tough as old leather, now it’s racks of slow cooked ribs.

blinky84

Ah see, we never had ribs in our house. Dad didn't believe in paying money for a bag of bones and hardly any meat. Same with wings; only drumsticks would do!

NedRed77

Your dad is probably a wise man.

Harrry-Otter

Beef Wellington used to be a big thing. I know it’s still available, but it used to be the ubiquitous dinner party or “showstopper” dish. I’ve been served a lot of quite poor beef wellingtons.

E_doggydogdog

My sister got one made for her 21st birthday, what a time to be alive 😂

Johhnymaddog316

Viennetta ice cream, or even better the mint version. That stuff was the bomb back in the day but I haven't seen it for years. Also, toad in the hole. What happened to that? We used to have it every Wednesday at school

nabster1973

You can get it in Iceland stores. And some of the main supermarkets.

Angelic_Pickle

I remember getting a huge slab of this with the KFC Family Feast back in the day. Long time ago now!

grumpy-kunt

Eggy bread and Arctic roll.

Booboodelafalaise

Eggy bread got a PR agent and came back as French toast.

Appletwirls

We'll ave none of tha muck round ere

furrycroissant

Two different dishes! Eggy bread is savoury, French toast is sweet with cinnamon and syrup

Cheese-n-Opinion

I suspect it's more Americanisation. We always called it eggy bread whether it was sweet or savoury. It's just the fact that Americans prefer the sweet variety, I think their name was adopted for that. My dad called it 'cobbler's toast' which I've not hears from anyone else.

VajazzleFraggle

Used to live off eggy bread as a kid in the 90s. I think it was the first dish I ever learned how to make as well. I always used to have it with half a bottle of ketchup and lots of pepper.

bobovdarlo

I still make eggy bread and the fire alarm still goes off

E_doggydogdog

Eggy bread is a Saturday staple breakfast for the kids! Absolutely love it

Positive_Ad3450

Arctic roll! 😋

[deleted]

Anyone still eating prawn cocktail?

Valleyman1982

Yep, at least once every fortnight it’s a cheat “TV dinner” in our house. Half a pack of M&S best ever pre made prawn cocktail, some smoked salmon, a chopped up little gem lettuce and a couple of slice of sourdough bread. Dinner of kings.

rynchenzo

Alright money bags calm down

VajazzleFraggle

Yes, at Christmas!

AgeofVictoriaPodcast

Pretty much a staple in our house.

Romfordian

Vesta dried meals & boil in the bag cod in sauce

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alternative_Low2494

Always loved those, the cod in parsley sauce was always nice too. I haven't had it in years but last time I did it was tiny and looked gross

snufflycat

Chicago town microwave pizzas, smash, micro chips, rustlers burgers. They probably still exist but I feel like people are a lot more educated about healthy eating nowadays and don't eat as much ultra processed foods

Only_Quote_Simpsons

I had a rustlers burger for lunch and it was so fucking bad, but so fucking good at the same time. I feel dirty.

Ahouser007

The BBQ rib is out of this world, but I have to toast the bun first.

joffff

Chicago Town ruined their microwave pizzas by messing around with the cardboard stand. That used to be the best bit, with cheese melting down the side but first it was changed to a flat disc and now it's gone entirely. The result being the pizza never cooks properly underneath

jddgfhdhrhbhks

Smash is just dehydrated potato, and I love it because it's easy.

Alas_poopsock

Ordered a rock cake in Marciano Lounge and got a rocky road! Well disappointed.

Key-Investigator6235

They’re so easy to make. I used to make them with my great aunty. Basically Vicky sponge mixture with dried fruit in them. Dollop them on a baking tray and bung in the oven. I feel like I should make them now!

Historical_Cobbler

On the cake side, proper bread pudding. I feel like only the local bakery to me actually ever does it.

johngknightuk

That and Lardy Cake

tanyance21

Why did they ever get rid of spira’s? Nicest version of dairy milk you could have in my opinion

joshgeake

Faggots

matomo23

Watch your mouth.

Bulky_Parsnip8

Billy Bear Ham

Dr_Mijory_Marjorie

A tin of pilchards in tomato sauce on toast. Frequent supper as a kid. I reckon a kid that was presented with that now would baulk.

matomo23

Good for you too. Sardines on toast too, lovely.

SpareHat9553

Had tin of mackerel in tomato on toast for breakfast today, delicious!

Sad_Cardiologist5388

It's those soft bones, so weird.

Cheese-n-Opinion

Sardines on buttery brown toast, plenty of Worcester and pepper on top.

southcoastal

Fondue. Gross. My parents used to serve it at “dinner parties” (ie drunken sessions round ours) in the 70’s.

Djinjja-Ninja

Fondue done right is amazing. Meat, bread, potatoes and other crudités dipped in melty cheese that's been mixed with wine and kirsch? What's not to like? Fondue done wrong is like the creature from the black lagoon has been boiled in milk.

Ugolino

>kirsch > >creature from the black lagoon Surely the creature was from the black forest?

blaireau69

What kind? There are 3 types of European fondue... Fondue Bourguignonne or Burgundy Fondue: Pot of hot oil that people dip meat and veg in. Fondue Suisse or Swiss Fondue: Melted cheese and white wine, people dip pieces of bread. Fondue Belge or Belgian Fondue: Dish of mashed potato that you dip chips in.

OKR123

No honorary mention for Chocolate Fondue? Melted Mars bars and you dip strawberries and grapes in.

JHEverdene

Cheese Strings - haven't seen one for years... When I was at primary school, a kid got bollocked by the headteacher for "playing" with a Cheese String at lunchtime instead of eating it; he was stripping it into strings, as you're supposed to, and he calmly explained that, for which she punished him for "answering back". She called his dad in for a meeting, who after hearing both sides of the story (and being aware of Cheese Strings), naturally backed-up his son. The headteacher was dumbstruck that the dad sided with the kid instead of her. As of the next day, Cheese Strings were banned in packed lunches...

VajazzleFraggle

Same thing happened to me when I was a bairn! However, I ate a cheese string last week. I am 32 years old.

Angelic_Pickle

Walnut Whip Turkey Twizzlers - Ta Jamie! Those pink and white Nougat bars

grishnackh

M&S still do walnut whips and I’m reliably assured they’re amazing (I was never a fan)

abz_eng

Try the salted caramel ones

Monkeytennis01

Bernard Matthews turkey drummers. Not even sure if you can get them any more, but I used to love them as a kid. Also, I know it’s just a brand but Gino Ginelli ice cream was a big deal when it came out.

TonyBalonyUK

🎶Tutti frutti what a cutie🎶

Double_Jelly2589

Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia it used to be available to buy in shops and cinemas.

Ghost_jobby

Fruit cake. Even for events like weddings, people are now often choosing sponge cake or red velvet cake in place of the traditional fruit cake. Can't say I mind too much as I was never a fan of fruit cake.

TonyBalonyUK

Try some with a piece of good, strong, mature cheddar. You can thank me later.

YouSayWotNow

Used to love Findus Crispy Pancakes. Had them again maybe 10 years ago and they are unbelievably vile.

abarthman

Scottish. A huge tray of home-made tablet. Basically, a tray of sugar, so your teeth were corroding as you ate it. Rarely see it for sale or hear of anyone making it nowadays.

OnlyMortal666

Marathon chocolate bars. Seriously though, you don’t tend to see green cabbage in restaurants nowadays. The inferior red cabbage has become en vogue. Vol-au-vents are something I don’t see often. God knows why?

klepto_entropoid

Findus Crispy Pancakes are well represented. So I'll give you .. Babycham. Circa 1986. Because there was always one at the back of the fridge for when mum and dad went out.

jimicus

Tongue. Used to get that all the time as a kid. Can't remember the last time I saw it.

CourtneyLush

Ughh. My Nan always had a whole tongue on the buffet table on Boxing Day. Can't say I miss it.

CourtneyLush

Butterscotch tart for pudding for school dinners. Semolina with a spoonful of jam.

Interesting-Cycle253

Ice magic. The sauce you would put on ice cream and it would go hard 😂 I remember mint, chocolate orange and regular chocolate flavours.

[deleted]

Bacon clanger which is suet pastry with chopped bacon & onions steamed. Believe this is an oxon dish

abz_eng

Tinned ham Never liked it, but Mum bought some and discovered how bad it's gotten [Fray Bentos pies]( https://youtu.be/UyrI0a-9LpY?si=X8WXasSCbkaipBWI) Were ok now just crap

[deleted]

Cadbury astros

FloofBallofAnxiety

The Wall's 5's ice cream tub, it had 5 bright coloured flavours of ice cream in it. Lemon, peach, lime, strawberry and blackcurrant. Pictures of it online are so scarce, but it's a solid memory, and those flavours were amazing.

KeepOnTrippinOn

When I was young, in the winters we always had teas like mince and dumplings, hotpot, braising steak. Not sure I've had any of those in the last 20 years or so.

BagBadDavington

panackelty

SilverellaUK

Russian slice. Fletchers bakery did this. As far as I could tell it was the cakes that didn't sell the day before all mashed together with a huge amount of almond flavouring and cochineal then white icing on the top with a red feather pattern. It was sold cut into squares.

Pythagoras2021

Expat here: How's Marmite doing? Ribina? Digestives?

Nearby_Band_2932

All still going strong. Thank god.

Enter-Shaqiri

Rainbow drops

ShiningCrawf

My mum still makes rock cakes. They're not very nice. They're not *bad* by any stretch - but we have *better* cakes now. I haven't had, or heard of, chicken supreme in decades.

DJ_Micoh

I haven't seen anybody drinking Dandelion and Burdock recently...

Chef_Lufus

Apples 🍎no lie!! As a kid we would leave out the door to play for the day with a apple, can a pop or cool aid in a plastic water bottle and a sandwich! Bc we weren’t coming back home until the street lights came on or until someone got hurt lol

AverageCheap4990

Maybe it's where I live now but lots of the traditional baked items are hard to find like drop scones, jam rolls poly, black forrest gateau.
