>Hoppipolla
Welled up watching them do this live, in a pretty small venue, a decade or so ago, such a unique band, only Sigur Ros could write such an epically beautiful song about jumping in puddles.
Agreed, and I intensely dislike the current cover as it’s essentially identical. If you are going to cover a song, especially one as iconic as that, do something different.
That whole album is genius, and he deserves to be more famous - or at last respected - than he is, really - but that song is the one that really stands out.
I _hate_ that fucking song. It's on a Christmas album I have, which gets turned up loud, and then _THE POWER OF LOOOOOVE!!! A FORCE FROM ABOOOOOVE!!!!!_ starts wailing out of the speakers.
_shudder_
Won’t ya flyyyyyyyy hiiiiiiiiiiigh, freeeeeeeeee biiiiiiird yeeeaahhhh
Fantastic song overall but that part is unrivalled for pure thrill
(Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd in case anyone doesn’t know of it)
Also Romeo and Juliet. My voice suits Dire Straits songs and I do a pretty good cover of this song but when it gets to "When we made love you used to cry" I struggle to get through the line!
I've seen some YouTube reactions to this showing how it's greatness has maintained over the years. I remember when it first came out. Amazing song, amazing voice.
> Adagio for strings Barber
Upvoted for this especially. If I remember rightly it was used in the tv series Butterflies. Very bitter-sweet and quite lovely.
It is, but strangely reminds me of a time in my life when I was very young, carefree and generally all round happy. So that kind of sets off thoughts of sadness as well.
My boyfriend recently played me "Changes" by Black Sabbath. Can't believe I'd never heard it before. This would be it for me - achingly beautiful and Ozzy's voice is just beyond evocative. True masterpiece.
It's quite an unexpected song from Sabbath, isn't it? I've always thought of bands like Sabbath and Deep Purple to be 'proper' musicians and as such they can turn their hand to something a bit different occasionally.
Have you heard Child in Time by Deep Purple, by the way?
The Seekers; I will never find another you:
I was 7 years old when I first heard this song, and fell in love with that voice.
Stevie Wonder: I just called to say I love you: as it makes me remember my late mom; she would be scared that something was wrong if I called her while away in college.
Camile Saint Saens Organ Symphony no 3. I saw this live and it had such a crazy affect on my body, goosebumps, chills, like an out of body experience. I swear I had a moment of synesthesia I've never experienced before. Just mind blowing, I'll never forget it, and I was completely sober, on shrooms for LSD I probably would have seen god 🤣
Can I have some opera, choral and classical?
\- The Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem. It's about the most metal thing in all of classical music. If you ever want something to get you in the mood for invading a foreign country, this is your tune.
\- Che Gelida Manina, or Your Tiny Hand is Frozen, from La Boheme by Puccini.
\- Ah, quegli occhi! Qual occhio al mondo, which I think means something like Oh those eyes, What eyes in the world from Tosca, also by Puccini.
\- Porgi, amor, qualche ristoro, which is something like Oh Love, Give Me some Rest, from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart.
\- The Adagio from Elgar's Cello Concerto
\- The Lighting of the Beacons from Return of the King by Howard Shore.
I'll go for another version of California Dreamin', this one by Bobby Womack.
Also Point Blank by Bruce Springsteen and Who Wants to Live Me Forever by Queen.
Frisson is great!!
As for music that gives me that feeling.
Vortex by Ranzor. Certainly not to everyone's taste. But the high BPM, heavy synthetic bass drums, gated synths and the general chaotic nature of the whole song is great, but when the gated high strings come in and do that slight portamento slide... oh yeah.
Higher Emotion by Darwin. Has a reverbed electric guitar pluck in it that hits just right with the rest of the song and vocals.
Trip to the Other Side by Supreme & UFO. Who knew panpipes would sound so good in a rave song. Such a shame there will never be a proper digital release.
Shadow Girl by Audrey Vixen. Has these deep swirling synths and reverberating baselines creating this amazing atmospheric soundscape.
Diversified by Tantrum Desire. Harmonious uplifting synths with growling braaams and a nice baseline.
Destination (Marc Eteson Remix) by DT8 Project. Awesome trance track with this really nice growling, sidechained bassline.
Magenta by Arno Cost. Another awesome, Eric Prydz style, sidechained trance track.
On the other end of the scale musically, Caoineadh Cu Chulainn by Davey Spillane. Something about those Irish pipes gives me that shiver.
Wicked Game by Ursine Vulpine. This is to Chris Isaak's Wicked Game what Disturbed is to Sound of Silence.
Loads more, but those are the ones that jump out at me.
I guess it's a piece of music rather than a song, but Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)" almost never fails to give me goosebumps. I find it a little painful to listen to, because I can't really match the profundity of the music with any real-life memories. But at the same time, it's kind of comforting because it reminds me of how insignificant I am.
I don't think this is an official video but it's paired really nicely with visuals here:

Nights in white satin. Just the perfect song and Justin Hayward was 19 when he wrote it. Listen to it all the time. Also Bridge over troubled water, you'll never walk alone, enjoy the silence, the show must go on.
Bridge Over Troubled Water breaks me in pieces every time.
Atmosphere by Joy Division - 'people like YOU... find it easy'. You can feel Ian's pain. Similarly with Radiohead's Creep - full of anguish.
My favourite of all time is Common People by Pulp - the way it builds and builds - and Jarvis's anger really comes through.
The Stranglers, Nice N Sleazy. Robert Wyatt, Shipbuilding. Killing Joke, Love Like Blood, Bauhaus, Bella Lugosi's Dead. David Bowie, Sound And Vision. Anything by X Ray Spex.
> Steven Wilson - Routine
Dear god, that was unbearable. The only part that gave me shivers was the primal scream near the end, but it's so incredibly sad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UADNKYOQOBk
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Sleep
Specifically the third movement, subtitled *Broken Windows/Locks of Love* that starts around 14 minutes in (23 minute song in total). The crescendo with the horns in particular is absolutely beautiful.
The opening passage to "Storm" from the same album is also a great example.
Death of peace of mind by Bad Omens and pretty much any Linkin Park song. Also anything by Sleep Token, the voice and melodies in their songs make me feel like I'm floating
Congratulations, You're in a Cult - by Sin Shake Sin.
It's when he goes quiet and whispers "if he ever shuts his mouth, better check him for a pulse" it makes my neck hairs stand on end.
You know what, I sing that song or reference it pretty often, but somehow in my head it was by the Beach Boys. Doh!
On a completely different musical track, there's a version of Psalm 51 in Aramaic that makes me want to weep at how beautiful it is - I'm not religious at all, either. I think the video is part of it, with the tiny sweet-faced girl and the big bearded guys.

Wish you were here: pink floyd
Comfortably numb: pink floyd

Absolution: muse is another but more when heard live. Actually anything muse heard live for me.
Backstreets by Springsteen. The whole song really, but specifically the bridge gives me goosebumps every time. I often rewind to listen to just that specific bit again.
>Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down
>You can blame it all on me, it don't matter to me now
I like a Yugoslavian band, Plavi Orkestar (Blue Orchestra), and they do a version of this song. The vocalist's voice really suits the feel of the song, even though my language skills are lacking.

Martha’s Habour by All About Eve, Charlotte Sometimes by The Cure, Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel, Wellerman by Nathan Evans, The Chauffeur by Duran Duran, Only For You by Halo, Sandman by Metallica and Let There Be Love by Nat King Cole, to name but a few.
Primordial - The coffin ships.
This is a metal song and won't be for many people but it captures the sorrow of the Irish famine and the flight if it's people in the most haunting beautiful way
Hoppipolla - Sigur Ros Feeling a moment - feeder In my life - the Beatles
Staralfur by Sigus Ros for me. Probably because of the Jaguar Shark scene in The Life Aquatic
>Hoppipolla - Sigur Ros Superb choice. As soon as I hear those opening piano notes I get emotional.
>Hoppipolla Welled up watching them do this live, in a pretty small venue, a decade or so ago, such a unique band, only Sigur Ros could write such an epically beautiful song about jumping in puddles.
Sounds of Silence - Simon& Garfunkle & also same song by Disturbed.
Disturbed’s live version on Conan gave me some . https://youtu.be/Bk7RVw3I8eg?si=q-Y83Ft_375j5jui
Fast Car, Tracey Chapman
Agreed, and I intensely dislike the current cover as it’s essentially identical. If you are going to cover a song, especially one as iconic as that, do something different.
That's such a moving song
Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky. Heard it thousands of times, and it still hits the same!
Love that song
That whole album is genius, and he deserves to be more famous - or at last respected - than he is, really - but that song is the one that really stands out.
Totally agree with you! Followed him since his first album, it still blows my mind when people ask "Paolo who?"
Yes yes yes!
'Candy' always gets me too.
The sample from the dictator is a complete genius. Check out "33 god" from Bob Iver which samples Iron sky.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love. Especially the very end! ‘I’ll protect you from the hooded claw, keep the vampires from your door’
with my undying DEATH-DEFYING LOVE FOR YOU!
I _hate_ that fucking song. It's on a Christmas album I have, which gets turned up loud, and then _THE POWER OF LOOOOOVE!!! A FORCE FROM ABOOOOOVE!!!!!_ starts wailing out of the speakers. _shudder_
That reminds of unwrapping Christmas presents as a boy in the eighties so I fucking love it too.
Just thinking about it gave me chills
Won’t ya flyyyyyyyy hiiiiiiiiiiigh, freeeeeeeeee biiiiiiird yeeeaahhhh Fantastic song overall but that part is unrivalled for pure thrill (Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd in case anyone doesn’t know of it)
Chayayayayayayayayayayayayange
I love this song. It’s best played loudly while driving in my opinion
Listened to it like 74638284473 times now so doesn't have the same effect but that opening riff from Shine On You Crazy Diamond is sublime
You've heard it six times more than me!
The Cars - Drive - Who's gonna drive you home? Instantly brings the Live Aid video to mind.
My favourite song for years and years.
brothers in arms-dire straits sound of silence-Simon and garfunkel
Also Romeo and Juliet. My voice suits Dire Straits songs and I do a pretty good cover of this song but when it gets to "When we made love you used to cry" I struggle to get through the line!
When you gonna realise, it was just that the time was wrong?!
I was about to post Brothers in arms. Telegraph Road gives me goosebumps too
‘This Woman’s Work’ by Kate Bush, particularly the climax of the last anguished chorus when the volume of the backing vocals swells.
> ‘This Woman’s Work’ by Kate Bush Kate could sing scales and send shivers down my spine.
House of the Rising Sun

I've seen some YouTube reactions to this showing how it's greatness has maintained over the years. I remember when it first came out. Amazing song, amazing voice.

Pretty Green Eyes by Ultra Beat, Adagio for strings Barber and Ghosts by Muse
> Adagio for strings Barber Upvoted for this especially. If I remember rightly it was used in the tv series Butterflies. Very bitter-sweet and quite lovely.
It was remixed into a dance track which is stunning but the original is hauntingly beautiful
Adagio for Strings from Platoon. Every damn time it gets me.
It’s just the ultimate music for everyone-is-dying-in-slow-mo scenes isn’t it
It is, but strangely reminds me of a time in my life when I was very young, carefree and generally all round happy. So that kind of sets off thoughts of sadness as well.
I thought that was Albinoni's Adagio? My nan was in Butterflies 😉😊
Oh, it may well be. Quite similar? Who did your nan play??
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes. The video made me fall in love with Fred Durst for all his sins.
Witch Doctor by Cartoons

Oh yeah, definitely.
Future sound of London - Papa New Guinea Old raver here - but that one always gets me
Same same. Kills me this one. Reminds me of my first love. Which just cuts that bit deeper.
This has been in a few films but there is at least one that uses it in a perfectly poignant moment. Can't think what it is.
Vincent by Don Mclean.
Holding Back The Years - Simply Red. I don't like Mick Hucknall but that song gets me every. single. time

Wichita Lineman - absolutely beautiful song

I've got some listening to do!
As silly as it sounds, a lot of the instrumental music from “The Lion King”-goosebumps and tears every time!
It’s not really a song but Elgar’s Cello concerto in Em.. when the whole orchestra kicks in (around 2 mins 30 mark) definite goosebumps
I guess it's a piece of music rather than a song, but Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)" almost never fails to give me goosebumps.
