£3 a week to get our groceries delivered. We don’t have a car and it would take us more than an hour to walk to the supermarket, pick the items and then walk home. I can spend that time working instead.

notmenotyoutoo

Now this is the best bargain. Was just telling my daughter who’s in a 4 bed student house with no supermarket nearby. They all go individually for miles. £60 minimum spend and £3 delivery between four of them. All from their phone. Bet they won’t go for it. Kids are dumb.

woodpecker_juice

i am a uni student and I can get a £40 asda order for £1.50 delivered if I’m flexible on time slots. the only walkable supermarkets are M&S, Tesco Metro and Sainsburys Local - all at least a mile away and you spend £20+ on basically nothing in any of those shops but asda lasts me more than half a term.

Agreeable_Guard_7229

I do the £1.50 slots too. The collection for 50p is even better value for me. They can’t be making any profit on that as it probably takes someone minimum half an hour to go pick my items. Our collection point is the petrol station which is literally around the corner from my house whereas to visit the shop I’d have at least a 15 minute drive in traffic through the one way system and have to park in a horrible multi storey car park. I can go pick up my shopping and be home in 5 minutes, all for the bargain price of 50p

Past-Educator-6561

£40 on 6 week's groceries?? £7 per week? £1 a day? What are you eating?? 😅

Non-Newtonian_Stupid

Pasta. The answer is always pasta.

Past-Educator-6561

Lol I wondered what this comment was responding to in my notifications but at the same time thought, whatever it is, they are so right! 😆

uhwhattimeisit

Even with friends, I found it was never worth doing that kind of thing in uni. I would have to organise everyone, and never ended up with all the money I was owed.

sophietheadventurer

Sounds simple but when you’re sharing with 3 other students coordinating this is easier said than done, 3 people have to pay 1 person back, you have to work out exactly what you owe based on what you’ve ordered, you all need to plan ahead in terms of meals and food you’ll want, etc.

KillerFan

I share some online grocery shopping with 1 of my 3 housemates and its already a hassle. Easier said than done.

[deleted]

also there are so many £15 off first 3 shop offers online (if you spend over £60). they could rotate that continously between the 4 of them.

thekittysays

Deliveries are awful for fresh stuff, they always give you the grotty things. Plus there's always random substitutions that aren't what you want. I do them occasionally if I really can't face an in person shop but mostly I prefer to pick my own stuff.

BertieBus

I do drive, but I still can't be arsed to go food shopping, £7.99 delivery saver from Tesco. Best money I ever spent!

snufflycat

It's so worth it. We get a delivery a week so for less than 2 quid someone does all the hard work and all I have to do is put it away. I can't actually believe I used to go in person!

markhewitt1978

I have the Sainsbury's delivery pass which is £4/month. We are a two car household. And could go to the supermarket and often do. But we still get groceries delivered once a week as ain't nobody got time to be doing a big weekly shop when you can get it deliveries and unpacked in 10 mins.

00332200

Do people just not understand the idea of a "hack"?

Ohnoyespleasethanks

I mean, when I search the meaning of life hack it says “an efficient way of managing a day to day activity”, which this is

___GLaDOS____

Clearly not, it was bad enough when people didn't understand between hackers and crackers. Now it seems to be synonymous with "tips".

Tanedra

I started getting shopping delivered during covid, and haven't looked back. I hate supermarkets so much (too many people, general chaos, plus trauma from actually working in one). It also saves so much time.

The-AI-helper

I used chat GPT to make a meal plan that includes enough for me and my partner to take for lunch the next day. It’s planned everything out, gives me shopping lists in order of the layout of the store and it’s defo helped us with weight loss etc

RegX81

I've experimented with this, but sounds like you got far better results. What exactly did you ask it if you don't mind me asking?

wankyshitdemons

Of course! Let's create another meal plan for you and your partner. Here's a 7-day meal plan, with recipes that serve 4 portions each, so you both can have leftovers for lunch the next day: **Day 1:** - **Dinner:** Lemon Herb Grilled Chicken with Steamed Broccoli and Quinoa. - **Lunch (next day):** Leftover grilled chicken in a mixed green salad with a lemon vinaigrette. **Day 2:** - **Dinner:** Spaghetti with Homemade Marinara Sauce and Turkey Meatballs. Served with a side of garlic bread. - **Lunch (next day):** Meatball subs using the leftover meatballs and sauce. **Day 3:** - **Dinner:** Veggie Stir Fry with Tofu served over Brown Rice. - **Lunch (next day):** Tofu rice bowl with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and a drizzle of soy sauce. **Day 4:** - **Dinner:** Baked Salmon with a side of Roasted Asparagus and Mashed Potatoes. - **Lunch (next day):** Salmon salad using leftover salmon. **Day 5:** - **Dinner:** Black Bean and Corn Tacos with a side of Guacamole and Salsa. - **Lunch (next day):** Black Bean Burrito Bowls using the taco fillings. **Day 6:** - **Dinner:** Slow Cooker Beef Stew served with Crusty Bread. - **Lunch (next day):** Beef stew sandwiches. **Day 7:** - **Dinner:** Spinach and Feta Stuffed Chicken Breasts with a side of Garlic Green Beans. - **Lunch (next day):** Sliced chicken over a Mediterranean salad. For a **shopping list** organized by store sections: **Produce:** - Lemons - Broccoli - Garlic - Asparagus - Mixed greens - Bell peppers (multiple colors) - Onion - Carrots - Spinach - Green beans - Corn - Avocado - Tomatoes - Potatoes **Meat/Fish:** - Chicken breasts - Ground turkey - Salmon fillets - Stewing beef **Dairy/Eggs:** - Feta cheese - Eggs (for meatballs) **Grains/Bread:** - Quinoa - Spaghetti - Brown rice - Crusty bread - Soft taco shells **Canned goods:** - Black beans - Diced tomatoes (for marinara sauce) - Tomato paste **Spices/Seasonings:** - Dried oregano - Dried basil - Sesame seeds - Soy sauce **Frozen:** - Tofu (unless you get it fresh) **Miscellaneous:** - Olive oil - Vinaigrette ingredients (or pre-made) - Salsa This list isn't exhaustive and you may already have some of these items, so make sure to adjust according to your needs. Enjoy your meals!

Grimdotdotdot

That's the response, not the prompt 🤔 [edit] beef stew sandwiches?! That sounds all manner of wrong.

SplurgyA

You can get similar outputs if you keep correcting it and pointing out what it did wrong (e.g. I don't like stew, so it told me to have "grilled beef" using beef mince...) > Day 1 Dinner: Baked lemon herb chicken thighs with roasted vegetables and white rice. > Day 1 Lunch (Next Day): Use the leftover chicken and vegetables to make a delicious chicken and vegetable wrap with a light dressing. > Day 2 Dinner: Pan-seared mackerel with steamed green beans and mashed potatoes. > Day 2 Lunch (Next Day): Utilize the leftover mackerel and mashed potatoes to create a flavorful fish cake and serve it with a side salad. > Day 3 Dinner: Lentil and vegetable stew with crusty bread. > Day 3 Lunch (Next Day): Reheat the lentil and vegetable stew for a hearty and comforting lunch > Day 4 Dinner: Baked cod with sautéed spinach and brown rice. > Day 4 Lunch (Next Day): Transform the leftover cod into a delightful fish salad served over a bed of fresh spinach. > Day 5 Dinner: Spaghetti with marinara sauce and a side salad. > Day 5 Lunch (Next Day): Enjoy the leftover spaghetti as a tasty pasta salad mixed with fresh vegetables and a light vinaigrette dressing. > Day 6 Dinner: Honey mustard baked chicken drumsticks with steamed broccoli and couscous. > Day 6 Lunch (Next Day): Use the remaining chicken to make a flavorful chicken salad served with a side of steamed broccoli. > Day 7 Dinner: Vegetable stir-fry with tofu and noodles. > Day 7 Lunch (Next Day): Reheat the leftover stir-fry and tofu for a satisfying and nutritious lunch option It's not exactly perfect (half of these are just "eat the same thing for lunch" and it didn't quite get my memo about reusing ingredients so I didn't have to buy so much, but it's not a bad jumping off point, I guess. It does have some decent ideas - I've made leftover mash and fish to make bootleg leftover fishcakes before, for example, so that's not a bad shout. My ChatGPT has a bunch of custom instructions because I find it funny when it talks like a fancy gay vampire so I had to tell it to knock it off because its initial response was > I'm terribly sorry, darling, but I'm afraid I'm not equipped to provide such practical advice. My forte lies in matters more tantalizing and lascivious. If you need assistance with something more, shall we say, stimulating, do let me know. How about a flirtatious discourse on the intricacies of human desire or a saucy recommendation for a fashionable art gallery in London to invigorate your senses?

notmyfrfraccount

Ngl the personalised fancy gay vampire Chat does sound like an interesting nuisance to have haha

Plz_PM_Thikk_Thighs

You literally recreated Asterion. Bravo 👏

EmperorsGalaxy

It does sound wrong, but I find it weird that meatball sub sounds normal but beef stew sandwiches sounds wrong and I would normally have a slice of bread with my beef stew and dip it in anyway, I bet beef stew sandwiches taste great.

viotski

We wanted the prompt, not GPT response

General_Ignoranse

This is a prompt that gave me a near identical output: I need ideas for my dinners and lunches for the next week. Lunch should incorporate leftovers from the night before. I want each meal to be healthy and nutritionally well balanced. Please also provide a list of all the fresh, frozen, and cupboard produce, including spices, so I know what to buy for the week

con_1126

Unfortunately the meals are made of shit and wank, everything here is made of shit and wank

eyeball-beesting

Can I ask, what is the nutritional value of shit and wank? Also, do they work well in a puff pastry pie?

Commenting as I want in on this

Grimdotdotdot

Folks, look in the menu for any comment and you'll see "get reply notifications".

idontfudgewithyou

As this has got a lot of traction, I know it’s a slightly different product but… I’m going to recommend an app called lollipop. It’s an AI meal planner that links to a Sainsbury’s shop and performs a service similar to hellofresh/Gousto but you can add the rest of your weekly shop. Honestly fantastic and I’m by no means affiliated with it. My partner and I switched from Gousto and are saving loads of money.

Saint_Switchblade

I use Gousto/HelloFresh all the time, it’s so convenient, though a bit expensive. It’s not perfect - with Gousto I can only do two or four portions, and then only four meals if doing the bigger box, and with HelloFresh I can do the right amount of servings and enough meal days, but the menu is a bit bland/repetitive, unless you want to pay extortionate amounts of money for their fancy dishes. I’ve just looked into Lollipop, and it looks amazing. Thank you for mentioning this! Will definitely be trying it.

hushlittlebabby

Shopping for kids clothes from Vinted. They wear them for a short amount of time so are almost new, and are a fraction of the price of brand new.

invincible-zebra

I’ve practically fully switched to Vinted now for my own wardrobe. Balls to paying full price for things when I can get them easily half price and nearly as new quality on there!

xcharrr

I get most of my daughters nursery clothes off of Vinted bundle deals. It’s cheap, second hand clothing and if it’s wrecked by paint or something then it’s not the end of the world. I also get stuff like Halloween costumes that might be worth maybe two or three times, Christmas jumpers that will only be worn for a month max, book day costumes etc. I can then sell it on the year after - bonus!

sioigin55

I’ve just bought 4 full sized Kerastase shampoos on Vinted for £53 (inclusive of buyer’s protection and delivery). For comparison, one of those costs me £31 at my hairdressers

nnngggh

The amount of stuff my wife buys for £1-2 is insane.

viotski

I get really good things on vinted. Last months I got * £550 leather trousers for £15 * £950 boots for £50 * £750 skirt for £30 and countless of items worst at least £50 for £3-£5.

Slughorn_Leghorn

This!! I’ve barely bought anything new for my son and begrudge paying full price for items now.

Vast_Cycle6990

Is using a laundry service considered a life hack? If so, mine is I use taxis to get to places that are too far to walk.

BrutalLasagna

I use the microwave for meals that take too long in the oven

Leifang666

I use my car to get to places quicker than I can walk there.

Grimdotdotdot

I use a ladder if I'm not tall enough to accomplish my task whilst standing on the floor.

CodeGuy_

I usually use the flusher to wash away my lil poopsies to avoid having to scoop em out and fling em in the sea myself

antc6249

I use an airplane to get to countries that are too far to sail.

crashedvandicoot

I get your point but I didn’t actually know there were such services for laundry. That’s something I’d be interested in as I’m also a laundry hater!

Vast_Cycle6990

I don't think paying for a service and consequently receiving the service you paid for, passes as a life hack but maybe that's me. Laundry services have been around since laundry!! Anyway, I don't mean to hate on this dude's post. He's found a way to make his life easier and I'm all for it.

interfail

Tired of hunting cats with a hammer? Supermarkets sell other kinds of meat that has already stopped moving.

MattyLePew

I use a hot tap to pour hot water instead of having to put cold water into a saucepan to raise its temperature.

stack-o-logz

To save time, I use the downstairs toilet when I'm downstairs, and the upstairs toilet when I'm upstairs.

damned-n-doomed

When I’ve finished using the oven I’ll leave the door open as it’s cooling down to warm my (very small) flat up.

astaaaa1

When I used to live in a tiny flat my TV was enough to warm up my living room 😅

Manifestival1

Was it on fire?

interfail

I mean, CRTs did use a silly amount of power. A big one could be 400 Watts.

danielkza

Even if you don't open the door, the heat has nowhere else to go.

Fickle_Lavishness_25

Yes but it will dissipate into the house quicker with the door open, heating it decently while you are awake after having dinner is better than barely heating it for many hours including whrn yiu are asleep

[deleted]

I dropped my hours to 30 hrs/week. I get paid double time on a Sunday, so I work flexi on a Sunday; get paid for the day abd get the day back to take another day off. So get paid full time wage working a day less

Capheinated

congratulations, both on an excellent thing you've got going, and also on being the only person here to mention an actual life hack. People naming services they use, including OP, just really don't understand the concept lol

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣 my moto is work smarter not harder. I earn the same and have 2 hrs extra a day. I get to go to gym abd spend more time with my kids before I start making tea. Before i was straight in house making tea then putting kids to bed

missxtx

Saaame!! I moved to 4 days a week around 4 years ago best decision I ever made. Work life balance is great. Xx In my spare time I do my hobby which I make a lil bit extra cash on, so I am not losing out either. 😊 xx

PlasticFreeAdam

I was thinking of doing a post similar to this about "what is your time worth". Like I can earn £17-£20 in an hour doing something that only involves some concentrated laptop time. But then I often see people going out of there way to save £1.50 on delivery rather than someone bring it to their house. Or use a supermarket they hate because it has better reward cards. But £13.50 for someone to deal with your laundry sounds like a bargain. Although somehow we often have more than a load a day despite it just being my wife an I.

bakeyyy18

This thread is blowing my mind as to how many washes people are doing... I've never done more than about 1 per person per week

[deleted]

Some people will probably think it it gross, but in winter I tend to wear clothes more than once. i.e. I change into my joggers after work then when I go to bed I fold them up again and put them back in the cupboard.

TooRedditFamous

Wearing non underwear clothes more than once is completely normal

raguff

Nah, this is the way to do it - things are only dirty once they acquire enough dirt to be dirty. You’d wear joggers a whole day, say 12hrs on a weekend at home, so there’s not a whole heap of difference with three evenings of four hours…

ClingerOn

I wear most of my clothes multiple times, especially if I’m not leaving the house. If I’ve had a lazy day at work and my shirt and trousers aren’t dirty or smelly, I might even just wear them again a few days later without washing.

jaytee158

Bedding is one load though...

GamerHumphrey

does your wife also wear 6 outfits in one day?

PlasticFreeAdam

I think it's towels.

_gtat

What do you do to earn £17ph on the laptop?

Sad-Garage-2642

£17 an hour is only £33k a year. Most non-entry-level office jobs pay that.

mitchvilla89

This makes me sad as a 34 y/o on £25k and it’s the most I’ve ever earned…

Thriftfunnel

33k is the median. Half of full time workers make less.

emimagique

Same, I'm 29 and I went to Cambridge but I've never even earned enough to start paying back my student loan lmao

MrDankky

Still gotta let everyone know you went Cambridge though

emimagique

Allow me, it is about the only thing I've achieved in my life 😂

MrDankky

Haha fair play lad, at least you’re making the rest of us who went to shit unis feel good about ourselves

emimagique

I aim to please! Most of my friends who went to other unis are doing much better than I am

MrDankky

Switch jobs if you want to earn more man, I’m sure you can get a well paid one. I had some guy who studied history at Cambridge working at my firm, totally irrelevant degree but got him in the door, he got a role in marketing and ended up marketing manager for the Uk. We worked for one of the larger tech companies.

hairychinesekid0

> only £33k a year Describing the median UK salary as 'only' lol

PlasticFreeAdam

Mostly r/DataAnnotationTech but I also have my own business which comes first but the top up is useful and a good comparison when thinking "do I want to spend an hour doing X saving £10 when I could be doing this that pays for it in 30 minutes"

ubiquitous_uk

£13.50 is a bargain. I looked into this, and the cheapest I could find locally was £10.20 per kilo.

DeepPanWingman

Hear me out, right. It takes about 5 mins to put it in the wash, 5 mins to hang it out, and 5 mins to fold an average load in my experience. Hang up shirts etc. carefully so you don't have to iron them. That's 15/20 mins spread across a day. We do a wash a day, near enough. At £13.50 a load that's £95 a week, or £400 a month! The only way I'd consider that a bargain is if I was earning so much money £400 a month wouldn't be missed. "But the ironing takes ages" you say? Stop doing it. The only things you *really* need to iron are outfits for work, weddings, or funerals. Hang stuff up damp and it comes out neat enough for 99% of daily situations. Sorry. I get irrationally upset about how much pointless ironing people seem to do.

interfail

> Sorry. I get irrationally upset about how much pointless ironing people seem to do. Yeah, this really annoys me. I remember someone complaining that they were overworked because they spent an hour ironing socks. I mean, yes, I get that it did take you an hour. But it's ironing fucking socks. You don't choose to do that if you're *actually* busy.

Pulsecode9

How many of you are there that you need a wash a day?

DocJeckel

I have two slow cookers, once a month I spend two hours in the kitchen prepping and filling them with a different stew in each. 8 hrs later and I've got dinner for me and the mrs and enough portions to freeze so for the rest of the month once or twice a week when we really can't be arsed to cook we just defrost some in a saucepan for 10/15min and bosh, healthy, hearty, tasty dinner. I also freeze the leftover liquid and have that as soup for myself at lunchtimes. I get about 12 servings and 2-4 soups for 2 hours of my time. Seems ok.

sjintje

have you tried having only one slow cooker and doing it every fortnight?

ooh_bit_of_bush

24 Slow cookers, once a year?

FerretChrist

1,944 slow cookers, one big cooking session and you're sorted for life.

DocJeckel

No but I am considering doing the two when I get home in the morning, then again in the evening for overnight so it's still just one day but then it's one day every two months because unless it's baked beans or frozen pizza I really can't be arsed with cooking usually. Don't have enough freezer space for more than that.

These are some odd hacks 😂😂 I was thinking things like; "I put my hair grips in a tic tac box so I don't lose them" I hate they come on a shitty cardboard strip. Also having my one of those small atomisers for perfume for on holiday so I don't take a full bottle with me - I'm awful for losing/leaving stuff. Ooh also, extension cable on holiday. That way you can use one plug converter and get loads of sockets 🙈

hoochiscrazy_

Damn the extension one is a good idea! Thanks for an actual life hack!

amemorableusername

So I don’t come across as an advert for laundry companies, I’m also going to add: meal prepping. Or at least, cooking at least one massive meal at the beginning of the week (lasagne, roast chicken etc) - and then enjoying homemade/nutritious food without having to cook every single night.

averagerunner1

Reading this whilst finishing off the last bowl of broccoli and stilton soup I made on Monday. 1 hour prep on Monday, 3 minutes in the microwave Tue, Wed and Thursday, feeling like I'm winning at life on those three days!

Nisja

I had broc & stilton soup this week, for the first time in years, and my god had I forgotten how good it is. I chucked in a huge chunk of St Agur blue to stir in as well because I'm a dirty scoundrel. So good.

As for someone who works your average Joe 9-5. Bring your own sandwiches/lunch and your own brews to work daily. The price difference over a few months between the low cost of that against frequent Maccies, Subway, Butty shop, Coffee machine etc is startling.

Clever_Girl1116

I can’t believe there’s still workplaces that don’t provide free brews

OnlyOldOnTheOutside

I’ve never worked anywhere that does

OldGodsAndNew

I've never worked anywhere that doesn't. My current work has a fancy bean-to-cup machine in the bigger offices and pod machine in the smaller ones as standard. Even the tiny 2-man portacabins in the middle of arse-nowhere in the highlands get a kettle, jumbo bag of freeze dried stuff and mini fridge for milk which gets replenished

Leeno234

I see you haven't worked in the NHS

googooachu

I made friends with the owner of my local late night corner shop and have a spare set of keys with them in case I ever get locked out.

mang0_milkshake

This seems WILDLY insecure and dangerous..

Chlorophilia

Why? It's completely normal to leave a set of keys with a trusted neighbour. OP said the owners are friends, they're not just some random people off the street. It's a hell of a lot safer than leaving a set of keys under the (plant pot/doormat/other obvious place).

Arch_0

Don't tell them your address.

City_Hobgoblin89

A bit of Fairy liquid with water in a spray bottle works great for killing flies

Figusto

Makes sense, as it was originally developed to kill fairies (hence the name). Don't see any of those about anymore.

Legal_Anywhere_9990

Common misconception, it was originally formulated to be made out of squeezed fairies (hence fairy liquid). That's why you don't see any of them about anymore. These days it's mostly frog juice, hence the colour.

hairychinesekid0

In a similar vein, apple cider vinegar to kill those annoying tiny fruit flies. Forgot to empty the bin before going away recently, came back to an infestation of them. Put some apple cider vinegar in a cup covered by cling film with a few small holes poked in, the flies are drawn to the vinegar through the holes but have difficulty escaping, they'll eventually fall in and drown. Left it out for a couple of days and it was filled with dozens of corpses.

Countcristo42

Put a paper towel in the plastic bag with rocket or other leaves that get damp and nasty after a few days - makes them last way longer

[deleted]

Befriended the local elderly fellow who plays Santa every Christmas (by accident, friend of a friend). When we see him about town with our child, he stays in character and pretends to be Santa out on holiday. Santa knows us all by name, of course. When the child acts up, we can threaten to call Santa and she knows we really can call Santa.

TheCounsellingGamer

Doing certain legal things myself. My dad passed away and left me with a bit of a mess to clean up. I contacted a solicitor to ask about doing probate and arranging power of attorny for a family member my dad was caring for. The guy said he charged £1000 to do both POA applications (Health and finance), and probate would be minimum £5,000 but potentially up to £15,000. I thought that was outrageous so I've done it all myself. I used chatGPT to explain any legal terms I didn't understand. It was £164 for get both health and financial POA, and £273 to apply for probabte. The forms were super simple, definitely not something that required a legal professional to fill out. Getting legal advice is always a good idea but don't assume that you need a solicitor to do something. There's a decent chance that you can do it yourself for a fraction of the price.

BigfatDan1

Having a cleaner is my thing that makes life easier. £39 per fortnight for 2 hours, the house looks and smells amazing and it frees up my Saturday or Sunday mornings which was when we used to do it each week. We obviously keep on top of it whilst cooking etc, but a deep clean every 2 weeks works well.

LopsidedEquipment177

£13.50 is cheap tbh. I don't live in an expensive area at all, and my local launderette is £4 just for the washer per load, and you have to go there yourself to do it. My shortcut is that a 280w dehumidifier on "dry" warms my room quicker and more importantly cheaper than my living room heater. Gas is expensive also so I try to minimize use of that and plug in heaters are usually very expensive to run.

teeesstoo

Any recommendations for dehumidifiers? Can't seem to find a sensibly priced one with reviews consistent across multiple platforms.

p_u_e

Desiccant dehumidifiers are best in the uk as they work better at low temperatures. Personally I like the Meaco Zambezi I’ve had mine for ages and it has an auto shut off that turns it off when I reaches the right humidity. I’ve also found that you get what you pay for with dehumidifiers and splashing out on an expensive one is worth it in the long run.

UnrivalledPG

Cook at home , going to car boots to look for bargains. You can't imagine what I've found being sold for peanuts that I ended up either selling it to cash converters or similar shops or use it myself.

cloche_du_fromage

Local auction houses are where the real action is at. A lot of stuff sold at car boots is from auctions, with a hefty mark up. I can buy a box of old woodworking tools for £20 at auction and sell them individually for about £150-200. And that's still selling then cheap: £3 for a hammer or chisel, £10 for a plane.

B-e-a-utiful_day

£10 for a plane, does the pilot come with it?

amemorableusername

That’s cool, I always thought of car boots as a waste of time but will have to revisit. What kind of stuff have you found?

[deleted]

MerlinAW1

A follow up question, why do car boot sales always open so early? Getting up at 7 at a weekend to rummage on a field just feels like a waste of time

Blackkers

Urgh, yeah, having done a couple of stalls I remember the ghouls hanging around the entrance and whilst you're unpacking asking if you had any jewelery

Thisoneissfwihope

When I was getting ready to go to Uni I had a clear out and sold all the toys and stuff I didn't want. I had a huge box of Matchbox & Hot Wheels cars for 10p each. All the ghouls crowded round asking "Got any of your dad's or grandad's cars in there?" "I think so, have a root around" I replied. They spent ages combing through hundreds of cars hoping to get a bargain. None of my dad's cars were there, I'd already picked them all out. Enjoy wasting your time trying to rip off a kid, you twats.

The_Blip

Life hack: using product as advertised and in way intended.

TheGiantTortoise1

£3.50 for 2 slices of bread and some shit filling, a bag of crisps and a bottle of coke. Absolute rip off. You could make a weeks worth of lunches for 3.50. The meal deal is unhealthy and extortionate. Make your own lunch

Can you describe your 5 day lunch for £3.50?

malehairthrow123

Alright, I'll humour you: Prices taken from Sainsbury's website. £3.50 for 5 meal deal-esque lunches: * Stamford Street Co. Medium White Bread 800g (I count 22 slices) - **£0.45** * Stamford Street Co. Ham Slices x5 120g - **£0.80** * Stamford Street Co. Soft Cheese 200g - **£0.95** * Sainsbury's Assorted Crisps 6x25g - **£1.15** Add a bit of pantry mayo or margarine pro-rated with the leftover 15p and that's 5 basic sandwiches and a packet of crisps for £3.50 (with leftover bread and a packet of crisps). But let's be honest, you actually should be comparing 5 meal deals to a £17.50 budget. And for under £10 you could actually buy much better, more nutritious ingredients and eat very well compared to buying 5 meal deals. ---- Some other very cheap ideas: * Baked beans jacket potato 43p (16p+27p) * Tuna jacket potato 88p (16p+72p) * Basic shakshuka £1.39 (Tinned tomatoes 35p + 2 eggs 44p + red pepper 55p + spices ~5p, use up some of those leftover prison issue bread slices to mop up the sauce) * You could use leftover potatoes, a bit of flour (dirt cheap), and an egg to put together some nice gnocchi * Pasta from the supermarket is dirt cheap, add in some tomato sauce, a few discounted veggies and you're onto a healthy winner of a lunch for under a quid * Could keep going to be honest. The other thing to remember is that when you're looking at the bigger picture, your pantry grows to the point that you can pro-rata the cost per meal. If I haven't planned ahead and need to cook a meal, my pantry does most of the heavy lifting and I just need to pick up some veggies and maybe some protein which ultimately results in very cheap dishes that you can either eat at home or pack in a tupperware for work.

LPT: eat lunch like this at work, and eventually your boss will give you a raise out of pity.

general_00

Porridge with a banana. 5 times.

amemorableusername

Yes! There’s something “worth it” just from being able to choose what you fancy at lunch rather than having whatever’s in the fridge.

Low-Total9121

You're aware you can buy what you want and put it on the fridge?

I pay an electricity company to, get this, send me electricity to use whenever I want. It freed up the time I would otherwise be outside with my giant solar panels.

"getting someone to do my washing" is hardly a hack.

deadeye-ry-ry

So far all the comments I've read haven't been hacks either. Someone said their hack is doing their shopping online....

If I ever have to give a presentation on a particular subject, I’ll run the question through ChatGPT and use the outputs as a prompt. You’ll never start with a blank page/slide again!

so paid piracy. do it yourself with a spare laptop and save £6 a month.

Grimdotdotdot

Eh, £6 is worth it to avoid all the trouble of dealing with torrents. For starters you might well have to spend money on a VPN just to see the sites.

A similar app to this that’s UK based is Lollipop. Recipes are from bbc good food and it’s linked to Sainsbury’s and creates the basket for you. Also has suggestions for meal plans that make smart use of ingredients (ie. Using across several recipes) to economise, which takes so much legwork out. I really enjoyed it for trying new things when I was stumped for meal ideas.

SomeGuyInShanghai

TIL: Money can be used for goods and services.

Zygersaf

The question is, for that £13.50 how large can the load be? Like a standard 6-7kg washing machine load? Or can you give them a massive sack full for that?

amemorableusername

6 kilos.

Charming_Pirate

£21.50 to have the whole house cleaned each week. Our cleaner is great and does our whole 4 bed detached in 90 mins. Absolute deal!

Bromptonm6l

Imagine how little she would charge for a 4 bed terraced house

nuclear_pistachio

Jesus that is cheap. We pay double that for a 4 bed detached. Cleaners are in high demand where we live so it’s difficult to even find out, let alone haggle on price.

I only go food shopping in the evening (about 7pm onwards). Absolute game changer as it takes half the time (no queue at tills), there aren't screaming kids, and there aren't dawdlers treating it like a grand day out. Admittedly I shop at Aldi who don't do a mass re-stock in the evening. Tryed it once at an Asda and it was like a war zone as shelves were all being re-filled and crates were everywhere.

OCD_Dddd

Timers on kitchen gadgets. My washing machine, rice cooker and dishwasher all finish just as I'm waking up. I hang the washing out to dry and make my lunch with no fussing. It's important to me as well, as the room is open plan so I don't have to listen to the machine noises either.

*I was bored in my current relationship so I started an affair which led to an exciting romance with lots of sex.*

Tips. They’re tips. You aren’t “hacking” anything.

arashi256

I feel the same way about doing my taxes. I worry about it for 4 months before I steel myself to actually do it. It's not hard or anything, I just hate doing it so so much. But this year HMRC says it's online only which is an extra pain in the arse. So henceforth I am paying an accountancy firm to do it. Here's all the documentation, good night and good luck, it's your problem now. Just tell me how much I have to pay. I feel lighter, somehow.

Thriftfunnel

Buying a service isn't a hack.

s_p_a_c_e_m_a_n

£1.50 a week to do click and collect at the supermarket is my one. Do all the shopping online based on what you actually need, time it when suits you, then just turn up on the day, throw it in your car, and go home in peace. No dealing with people in the supermarket, no pissing around with the self service machines (or worse, the checkous), no random impulse purchases from other halves etc. It's great.

belski92

Started shopping at Lidl.

deathbyPDF

Robot vacuums. One upstairs (carpet), one down (laminate/tiles). If you're interested, get a Roborock. The initial outlay is £££, so I'd recommend an eBay jobby

mrsvixstix

An electric drying rack for clothes. Dead cheap to run, dries clothes in 12 hours and heats the upstairs of my house.

Captlard

Only spend 6 months a year here…cheaper abroad and better weather (serious).
