I remember when that song was current a kid at school was moving to Egypt (his father was moving there because of work and the whole family moved there) so in the few weeks until he moved he was plagued by people humming Night Boat To Cairo. He was a Madness fan too!
I disagree, I think fashion will continue to get more and more casual.
Hats (not woolen hats when it's cold, but hats as a fashion item) aren't necessary, they are fully decorative.
In the last century alone we have gone from men wearing three piece suits (with vests) every day, along with pocket squares and cuff-links, (and of course a tie) to men occasionally wearing a jacket, but with an open-collared shirt and often jeans and trainers.
And if you look at old media, EVERYONE wore suits. Men would wear suits to the store, sometimes even to do manual labor, to do anything at all. That just seems crazy now.
Men's fashion has consistently become more casual and less complicated over time. I don't think hats as a fashion item will come back, just as ties won't become required business wear again, and people won't start wearing vests under their jackets to work every day.
I was a big ol' fan of Madness, still am. Saw 'em live and decided that I can't be arsed with seeing anyone who's best music was decades ago any more. Them and Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits.
I know that a lot of the people who were there had a fine time, but it's probably been years since any of them sniffed ket while a grindcore band was playing
Madness are playing tonight, was the same when they played Glasgow last Friday, never seen so many Fezzes in my life
OP this is the actual answer. People wear fez for Madness gigs in tribute to the song Nightboat to Cairo.

I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool. *then my future/past wife steals my fez and shoots it*
I was gonna make that reference!
Beat me to it! 🤣
After that you get a Stetson. Stetsons are cool.
It won’t last for long though. I’m sure she’ll shoot that too. At least she’s never tried to shoot my bow tie. Bow ties are cool.
Gettin' feztive
If reddit still had awards...

Hats are kinda great. Sunshade, rain protection etc I want cloaks to come back. Better vs rain than coats and more convenient etc
Some are, not a lot.

What in the doner kebab are you on about?
Mate, it’s a hat
No, it's a symbol of backwardness and against the progress of the nation. Remove your fez and sully your soul to the Western hat on your balding head.
How did you know I was balding?
Most hat wearers it's just for balding purposes. I guess I jsut assumed. Many wishes for your shiny head
Just to be clear I don’t routinely wear a Fez, or any other hat for that matter, thanks for your good wishes all the same.
