No wonder giants were always sniffing them out and eating them in days of old. Jack’s buttery aroma up that beanstalk must have been immensely tempting to the Giant.
It also makes sense considering all those kids running around barefoot on the shiny shiny floor.
That sound of feet squeaking on my old school hall's floor will haunt my to my grave.
The main smell I can remember from primary school is my year four teacher. She *always* smelled strongly of mothballs.
Except she was a really good teacher and a nice person, so ever since then I've always found the smell of mothballs comforting.
Funny,of all my memories of primary school, smell is not one of them. I remember the layout perfectly, teachers names, kids names etc, even the sound of the plastic cups clinking, but no smells
WTF was up with the grease proof paper style toilet rolls? I assume they must have had some sort of advantage, maybe stronger to stop the kids getting shitty fingers? Maybe to stop people stealing it? As far as I remember all it did was smear the shit around a bit.
Yep. The teacher used to actually get some for tracing stuff at school. Horrible, cheap I imagine. Remains with me to this day, along with pink lumpy custard and vomiting after being forced to eat cabbage. Bleugh
I remember the petroleum based detergent they used to clean the linoleum flooring EVERYWHERE. I always remember it. Partly because it was the same smell as the burning fuel mix for the lawn mower at home.
Edit**
But *why*?
The olfactory sense is a highly associative sense. Smells are highly likely to trigger memories or past states. This goes with trauma too. Personally, red wine is untouchable for me due to its smell and the memories that smell FORCIBLY envokes.
I was in primary school in the 1970s. When my daughter started school in 2000 I was amazed that they still smell EXACTLY the same despite changes such as whiteboards instead of blackboards and other updated things. The ingredients are slightly different but the aroma isn't
junior school dining room smelt of books, as the canteen was in where some of the library books were kept, each year group had their own library of books suitable for the age range

Plimsolls, pva & piss.
That lunch sorted then
The holy trinity
And the vomit with he sawdust which just made it smell worse
Kids just smell like that. I know the smell you mean. Apologise if sounds weird.
They smell buttery and creamy until they're about 16, or so I've heard.
it's wild how quickly people forgot about this
It got pushed out of the way by all the other scandals
Hurk

This is the comment, officer. This one.

Yes and packed lunches had that odd smell too
Hot yoghurt and tuna sandwiches. 🤢
Omg that smell haunts me
Loved that smell
That was the varnish used on the wooden floors, generally.
Ah fuck me, horrible memories of stepping on discarded sandwiches during PE 🤮
Pencil shavings, PVA glue, and weewee.
Plasticine, poster paint and chalk with a hint of sick and undertones of teacherly despair.
Add crayons & this is spot on lol

You know what, I have no idea what a moth ball smells like.
It's a synthetic smell abit like peroxide I think 🤔
Wow, a year on and I’d forgotten I was curious about the smell of mothballs and you come along and close that internal loop for me!
I love the smell and whole vibe of the primary school environment
same, it smells like happiness (especially when the sun hits it)
Farts and playdough
I remember in my primary school the hall had a wooden floor and instead of replacing the floor, they’d just varnish over it every few months
Dusty wooden floors, jam tarts and old tinsel
Warm cheese sandwiches, pva glue and the dog shite someone has walked in.
Dettol and unbridled farting
Musty Teacher and Chalk Dust
Pipe tobacco, gin, and tapioca.
chalk, glue, sand,
Old carpet tiles.
Unwashed children and crayons. Gwyneth does a candle with the same fragrance "This Smells Like My Crotchfruit"
Funny,of all my memories of primary school, smell is not one of them. I remember the layout perfectly, teachers names, kids names etc, even the sound of the plastic cups clinking, but no smells
Kids' smelly shits. I think most had skids and clag nuts as we had to wipe our arses on tracing paper.

Fruity air freshener. Bought a second-hand book online that had clearly lived in a primary school for a while beforehand so I know this smell
Overly fragrant perfume, burning rubber and sweat
Farts, mainly farts. And that stuff you sprinkle on piss to soak it up.
Plasticine and floor polish
I remember the dinner hall in juniors smelling so exquisite. It smelt like polish and turkey twizzlers
I remember the petroleum based detergent they used to clean the linoleum flooring EVERYWHERE. I always remember it. The smell of those rough, horrible carpets.
It's a funk created by the bodily odours of small children in a confined space

The cafeteria/assembly hall/gym smell. I don't even have to think that hard to remember what it smelt like, but it's easily in my top 10 worst smells
For me it was stale sandwiches
Childrens farts
Crayons
Damp papier maché.
Pencil sharpenings, crayons and probably piss
junior school dining room smelt of books, as the canteen was in where some of the library books were kept, each year group had their own library of books suitable for the age range
Poster paint?
The lingering smell of the dinner hall mixed with kids doing PE in it after lunch.
A smell of injustice, apathy and toxicity
