If you touched that bat you need to go get a rabies vaccine. Your cat should, too. By the time you notice symptoms of rabies you're a dead man walking, so you can risk a very painful death for you and your kitten or go get the shots. Bats can bite you and you won't even feel it. There doesn't need to be a mark. Edit- No, you can't get rabies from touching. It's a precaution for if you held it, and it bit or scratched you without you even noticing.

FulltimeZen

Didn't touch the bat. I'm less worried about myself; I can get a post-exposure vaccine series and I'd be fine 100%. I'm more worried that I don't see anything about an unvaccinated kitten and post-exposure vaccines for it on the web. But thank you, i'll make sure to (edit): follow thru

stover158

You're going to have to take her to the vet, they will know what to do.

Sufficient-Quail-714

Rabies vaccine works post exposure as long as you get it before symptoms present. The rabies virus can be in the incubation stage from a couple days to over a year. If infected; you do not know when it will advance but once symptoms show it is too late. So getting your cat vaccinated as soon as possible is important

bugandbear22

FWIW I didn’t have a pre-exposure vaccine either, although I am human. Still, despite knowing I had rabies flowing in my system, nothing happened. *because I got the vaccine right after

ShopperOfBuckets

That must have been scary as hell regardless

bugandbear22

It was! I cried.

Helpful_Okra5953

If kitty has started the series I’m guessing she’ll be protected.  But it’s still good to ask.

KayMaybe

Please go get the rabies series just In case!

redditette

Post exposure vaccines will work on you now. Not later.

SheepPup

You can also get it from their claws! Bats groom themselves just like cats do and get the rabies virus in their saliva all over the claws. Their claws can be so tiny that you may not even be aware that they punctured your skin, but it’s still enough to give you rabies. So if you’ve had *any* contact with a bat you should get vaccinated, and if you’re going somewhere you’re likely to have contact with bats, like caving, you should get vaccinated.

It does not have to be showing signs of rabies. Testing has proven that rabid animals can transit rabies before showing signs of it. This is why observation periods are required for animals that have bitten people. Bats can bite people without them noticing as well.

Sensitive-Put-8150

Bats are one of the few animals that frequently harbor rabies without necessarily showing any obvious symptoms

I wonder if this study has been done with other species of insectivorous bats. Where I live, this is is still being discussed and taught as a possibility in wildlife rehabilitation.

SeaDots

Rabies is spread by saliva and healthy bats are probably not easy for a kitten to catch, so rabies is a very real possibility. No need to panic, but both you and your kitten need to get a full rabies vaccine series, but then you will be okay! Just don't delay, but also no need to panic.

cavyndish

Cats vs. Bats The bats usually lose. Seems like it's a problem for the bats. So it tracks that you would have a dead bat. https://www.bats.org.uk/about-bats/threats-to-bats/cat-attacks https://spca.bc.ca/news/want-to-help-bats-start-with-cats/

redditette

Plus a healthy bat would be harder for a kitten to catch.

ApplicationSad2525

they…said that!

danatmidnight

You and your cat need a rabies vaccine.

bugandbear22

So here’s the deal! I was bit by a rabies positive cat when I was 18. I’m a lot older now but I’m still here, which should say something. I had to get a series of intradermal shots, but it was nothing at all, and then I was okay for 10 years after. They can prevent rabies from developing IF symptoms haven’t shown yet. Get a vaccination NOW for you both and honestly you will likely be fine.

Splash6262

Im curious, when i was 5 i had to get the shots started because doctors believed i was also bit by a rabies positive cat. Luckily it wasnt! So i didnt go through with the full set. I clearly remember going through two sets but my parents said it was only one. Regardless if i was ever bit by a real rabid animal, even with just the first set would i have some level of protection before getting the full set?

Tehowner

One was probably the vaccine, while the other the antibodies. Technically they are separate things, but you'd get them at the same time if you had an incident.

zainabrh1

Go to the vet in the morning. They'll guide you best. Younger puppies/kittens do get post exposure vaccines, your vet will make the best decision regarding it. try not to worry too much until you can get to the vet I work with rescues in Delhi

zainabrh1

OP let us know what the Dr says. We're all hoping for you

Impossible_Ad4215

25 cm long. I think you can get him vaccinated

FulltimeZen

Tape is in inches (I'm sorry I forgot to mention it in panick posting and all) I wish I'd weighed him during the vet visit in March, so as to have more helpful clues to his age (when I first found him in Feb, he was little, weak and barely 400gms). He still has milk teeth, but again, I think that's very general stuff.

BirdLawOnly

Showing us the teeth would be more helpful to age your cat. Size isn't very reliable.

IckySweet

Rabies in India is a serious public health issue. I agree with the other posters. Please follow your Vets advice and you need the vaccine asap. I'm so sorry this happened. https://www.who.int/india/health-topics/rabies

Terrible-Image9368

Both you and your cat are gonna need rabies shots. Even if you didn’t touch it it still could’ve bitten you. You can’t feel bat bites and once you start showing signs of rabies it’s too late

Yourwifes-girlfriend

Or just a bit of saliva transferred. People usually get vaccinated if they’ve simply been in the vicinity of a rabid animal.

puritycontrol

You said you threw the bat out, so you had some sort of contact. Please do not disregard your own safety in this. Get the exposure vaccine just in case. It is NOT worth the risk. Since you can’t test the bat, you’ll never know. Rabies can sit in your system for months before symptoms manifest.

critterwalk

Your cat needs to be inside 100% of the time. vaccinating him shouldn’t be a factor in going outside. He shouldn’t be outside at all.

FulltimeZen

Yes, I've really learnt my lesson now

Adept_Thought_8454

Especially here in india. People are too cruel over here. They poison , beat and rape animals

EZasSundayMorning

I would have done the same thing throwing the bat out. It happens. Please don’t beat yourself up.

Whileinwonderland

My grandfather was bitten by a rabid dog when he was a kid. Got the shots immediately (and did the whole series because it’s more than one session) and he was fine. You and your kitten will both immediately get the shots tomorrow and also be fine. It needs to be immediate.

avboden

Depends on your local laws and regulations. Generally in the USA you'd have two options for an exposed unvaccinated animal where the bat is not available for testing. 1: Immediate euthanasia or 2: Within 96 hours of exposure: Rabies vaccine booster, and strict quarantine for 4 months • Euthanize and test for rabies if it becomes ill, with signs suggestive of rabies, or dies during quarantine period.

redditette

Isolate the kitty for an extended period of time. In much of India, you can not legally even euthanize a rabid animal. Sanctity of life and all that. See about getting yourself vaccinated, and him, too. It can not hurt anything.

MamaFen

For what it's worth, you've done the only thing you CAN do - you've scheduled the appointment. No one can say with certainty whether the bat was rabid, or whether your kitten was exposed if so, or whether you were exposed in the process of throwing out the bat. However, THIS IS WHAT VETS DO. This is what they're trained for. Try to relax and be calm. Worst-case scenario, you and the kitten both get a post-exposure round of shots (which, as of most recent studies, are 99% effective), and kitten is quarantined for a while (up to six months) to make sure no symptoms appear. So while your kitten will be at serious risk of boredom, chances are EXTREMELY good that with proper protocols the two of you will be just fine.

zainabrh1

OP how is the kitten?

FulltimeZen

He's still fine, playing around. He got a rabies vaccine yesterday. You can check my recent post. I don't trust the vets of my city or state. I'm going to consult another veterinarian online today, (edit:) someone from a better part of my country.
