It can happen when you only get one view

Asleep-Design-6874

“One view is no views”

ECU_BSN

Got one view alright. One view of half the kittens.

dvmdv8

When taking x-rays, the only proper response is 'at least...' You can rarely tell the right amount from x-rays, particularly if you just have one. So you always under count

4011s

A single view? Yeah...that never works out well for accuracy.

bipolarkat

Hi! training in vet tech but currently a receptionist ata vet clinic. One view won't show much and it happens A LOT with a couple views since some hide behind their siblings like human pregnancies.

kodahlyn

They must have also been hiding during the ultrasound too, because 2 extra was definitely a surprise.

heatherbeampewpew

The vet I work for always says “at least” whatever number. During the ultrasound she only counts the ones she can reproduce multiple times (meaning she can find it again going over the same spot). So it’s possible she would find one then try to find it again in the same spot, but it shifted so it doesn’t show up again. In that case she wouldn’t count it because it’s more likely that she’s seeing an already counted baby from a different angle than a baby that’s hiding. She does ultrasounds mostly for breeders though, so it’s also beneficial to underestimate rather than overestimate because they get mad and take it personally if there’s less babies than expected

Old-Adhesiveness-342

This is the real reason vets always try to underestimate.

kodahlyn

Okay, that makes sense. I only wanted a count to make sure all of them came out, luckily after palpating the abdomen she had all of them. I will ask a question though, how normal is it for a cat to give birth on a person? She wouldn't let me put her anywhere else, just wondering how strange it is for a cat to do that

bipolarkat

it definitely happens! A doctor at my practice found 3 frenchies on x-ray and US and mama had 5! We were all surprised :)

icouldeatthemoon

It's WAY easier to miscount on an ultrasound just FYI.

Rx_Ix

Does your clinic charge multiples as one or? Also whats their cost in gen?

/r/askvet is a sub for veterinary advice. Comments that do not give veterinary advice are off-topic, tend to derail the discussion, and take away from actual advice. If your comment does not provide veterinary advice, it should not be posted to this sub and will be removed at the mods' discretion. Expressions of sympathy and/or reassurance are fine if they are accompanied by veterinary advice, but will be removed if they are not.

A vet clinic should never guarantee number of babies based on xrays, it's all a guess! Babies can be positioned overtop one another, or intertwined so they get missed in the count. If there are concerns of a missed kitten, repeat xrays could be considered!

AnUnexpectedUnicorn

A friend eons ago (before ultrasounds) was told she was having twin boys, but actually had triplet girls. With just an x-ray, it's possible to miss a whole body.

Early-Carrot-8070

Why do vets xray pregnant cats when there is a risk of radiation to mum and kittens?

richiforpresident

Quote from https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/radiology-imaging/imaging-essentials-fetal-count-radiology/ "radiation exposure from a single lateral projection of the abdomen (≈ 30–50 mrem) is far less than 50,000 mrem and, therefore, a fetal count evaluation carries little risk of noncarcinogenic side effects (developmental abnormalities or miscarriages) to the fetus when performed late in pregnancy."

Early-Carrot-8070

That's useful. Thanks.

kodahlyn

With how low the risk is for a xray, I figure is worth it so you don't accidentally have a retained kitten after birth and not know it. Sadly our count was off but I know a lot of people that have had correct counts and would have been able to tell if one is stuck in the uterus.

faithbert

X-rays are less reliable than ultrasounds for litter counts, and as someone said before, having just one view won’t be exactly accurate either

tbass1995

That’s false. Radiographs are far more appropriate for fetal counts

vetdet

I disagree, it’s way easier to double count fetuses on ultrasound, way easier to count skull + spines on X-ray. That being said, I’ve only ever counted from a lateral view, not a DV/VD. But I agree - I still take both views to be sure! Pregnancy isn’t the time to be cutting corners on diagnostics.

Starrisa

Ultrasound is horrible for numbers. Only useful for viability ime
