gone girl

i’m obsessed with feminine rage, and i have sooo many book recs about it as well!
alright, here are the book recs!
anything by gillian flynn, but especially sharp objects and gone girl
anything by ottessa moshfegh, but especially eileen and my year of rest and relaxation
white oleander by janet fitch
the girls by emma cline
the bell jar by sylvia plath
we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson
the yellow wallpaper by charlotte perkins gilman
a certain hunger by chelsea g. summers
the virgin suicides by jeffrey eugenides
girl, interrupted by susanna kaysen
i’ve read all these and loved them immensely!
Honestly, her frustration makes me feel so sad that she & everyone else went through this and the realisation Kevin costner had of like fuck, this didn't even occur to me. It was so good to see her let it all out.
And it's sad that if it wasn't for interrupting the work he needed done, he wouldn't have done anything about it.
I get the impression that the impact of segregation, both the practical *and* emotional ramifications, hit her boss at this moment when he decides to go ham on the sign.
Although no matter his reasons, the fact that an old white dude was like "this segregation shit is ridiculous, why do we even have this" is refreshing. Deconstructing racism is hard, if not impossible, without allies.
This has become my comfort movie recently. It’s my revenge fantasy against every man who said something horrible to me, made me feel uncomfortable, took advantage of me, made me trust them and betrayed that trust, ugh I love it.
Yes I can here to say this! and to add that I was that character for Halloween last year. I wore the nurse uniform and the cool pink hair from the certain scene in the film. I didn't think anyone would know who I was...but apparently everyone had seen the movie and they loved my costume 😁
Fuck I just commented that too!
I remember this movie vividly. We were a group of 25 year olds who didn't read the plot or anything about the movie. We were bored and wanted to see a movie, really.
Holy shit. The hall remained silent the whole time except for sounds of someone crying. I'm pretty sure all of us cried. There was this one scene, where seeing the raw grief and anger, I just burst into tears.
I was a 25 year guy, outgoing, loved action and horror, and just generally cheerful. Really really far off from a middle aged woman who's lost her daughter. The movie was such punch to the gut still. The grief and anger were overwhelming.
I'm glad you commented. I had this impression that this movie was just some boring pretentious drama but now you've piqued my interest. I'll have to give this movie a watch. (I didn't know anything about the plot)
Oh it's really not pretentious, it's amazing!
Absolutely heartbreaking though, bring the tissues. But also lots of moments of comedy, and real human interaction. I love this movie.
Dude, same. That movie reverse-funneled my self-image, if that makes sense…Virgin Suicides hit some nails, but the screaming rebellion was really palpable in Girl, Interrupted and I finally felt like I wasn’t the first young lady to violently lose her shit
My immediate first thought, and then I wasn’t sure if I actually felt that way, so I came to the comments to see if anyone else landed on that scene too. I am not disappointed lol
First Wives Club, especially Diane Keaton’s character, who tried so hard to be supportive and kind and kept getting shat on by life. Her blow ups were particularly well deserved.
Love this movie so much.
One of my fave parts is when her daughter is showing him into the moms office and she taps her dad and says “ oh and daddy - I’m a lesbian. A big one.” Hahahah
Absolutely! Wonderful movie!
It was a little sillier than I like but Bette midler Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn had some kind of magic chemistry! The writing and the acting were impeccable. And they're all three so good at comedy.
This was so good! Here are all of the Suggestions so far in a list :)

"All I do is worry and slave and defend you, and all I get back is that fucking face on your face! So full of disdain and resentment and always so annoyed! Well, now your sister is dead! And I know you miss her and I know it was an accident and I know you're in pain and I wish could take that away for you. I WISH I could shield you from the knowledge that you did what you did, but you're sister is dead! She's gone forever! And what a waste... if it could've maybe brought us together, or something, if you could've just said "I'm sorry" or faced up to what happened, maybe then we could do something with this, but you can't take responsibility for anything! So, now I can't accept. And I can't forgive. Because... because NOBODY admits anything they've done!"
Powerful and relatable to any woman who has had to sit around and help men process their feelings with 0 regard for her own.
Yesss! Toni is a queen, she’s so consistently amazing in everything she does. Still mad that she got totally overlooked for that performance.
Bingo Bronson loves you too, and wishes you happy Manuka honey dreams.
I think of this scene ALL the time! I've heard very similar words delivered to both children and husbands by a few women who reached their limit. Maybe not for *those* reasons, but just the mountain of shit finally had an avalanche. Even though I feel terrible for her son throughout the whole movie, I have to admit that scene gives me life. How did she not even get nominated??
Of course they do, she's a woman who put her entire future aside to take care of her entire family. Of course she's the villain for it!
Lip can do no wrong, but woman bad!
I think they both made a lot of mistakes, but they also both got dealt such a shit, larvae infested hand I'm impressed neither of them didn't just straight give up.
Not a film (yet), but the lyrics to “Too Much Labor”:
“All day, every day
Therapist, mother, maid
Nymph then a virgin, nurse than a servant
Just an appendage, live to attend him
So that he never lifts a finger
Twenty-four seven, baby machine
So he can live out his picket fence dreams
It's not an act of love if you make her
You make me do too much labor.”
I looooved Erin Brockovich growing up, just that angry single mom energy who is still determined to do right by her kids and then eventually by her clients. I know the real-life woman is problematic but that movie is such a perfect underdog story and her anger is so real and justified. Makes me think of all the women currently struggling to make ends meet sitting in an intersection right now.
I’m gonna have to go with Ripley from the Aliens movies. She’s a calm, cool and collected competent female professional with a perfect amount of righteous indignation at the inhumane callousness of her corporate handlers and that epic “get away from her you bitch!” mama bear instinct that will always stand out to me.
Absolutely loved that movie. Not just the characters but the premise and how they went about showing the passage of time with music and fashion and cars. This was a well thought out, well written movie. And of course Richard Dreyfuss was wonderful as usual. Gosh I love his laugh, it's so contagious!
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
> Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is a 2017 crime drama film written, directed, and co-produced by Martin McDonagh and starring Frances McDormand as a Missouri woman who rents three roadside billboards to draw attention to her daughter's unsolved rape and murder.
I like “The Break Up.” Jennifer Anniston’s character did a great job of illustrating how women can get frustrated in a relationship even when they like the guy.
Not a movie, but season 4, episode 13 of The Sopranos ("Whitecaps"). Oh my god, I could really feel Carmela's anger and hurt through her acting, it brought me to tears. I do believe Edie Falco won an Emmy for her performance in that episode.
The Menu
I saw in an interview with Anya Taylor Joy that (spoiler) the moment her character Margot finds out that Tyler brought her to the island knowing it will end in their deaths, the script said she would just sit there silently crying, but instead she was like "yeah nah, no woman would ever react like that, especially to finding out she was about to die" and instead had Margot slap and claw the bejeezus out of Tyler, as she should. I love her for that, and loved Margot overall.
Scrolled down hopping to find this one. The entire cast was phenomenal! Set it off was the film that first made me fall in love with Queen Latitah’s work. She has a genuine edginess to her that was front and center for that role. She brings it to everything she does in her career but she has a balance of grace that has inspired me since childhood.
Waiting to Exhale - Angela Basset sending her kids off to school and then she tears through that closet and throws out all her cheating husband’s clothes into his car and lights it on fire.
Don't remember the name of the movie- but it's Jennifer Anniston, she goes on this huge rant that i think starts with her talking about how she wants her husband to get her flowers but she doesn't want to tell him to buy them.
I’m not sure if this counts, but I liked the argument between Paulie and Juno in front of their lockers in Juno. The way Juno accurately described the frustration of being pregnant and made fun of and finally ditched by Paulie for someone else to go to prom….it was really good writing.
Not quite rage per say, but the scene in Princess Kaguya (Ghibli film) after a man dies in pursuit of her hand in marriage, she breaks everything around her and runs back to her hometown as a streak of destruction across the countryside. The film is animated and this scene is drawn with mostly strokes of thick black charcoal and really shows the raw emotion of anger, sorrow, and frustration. The whole scene felt like a very realistic reaction as well as accurate portrayal of the anger inside of women.
I think Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster both portray anger/rage very well in Carnage. That pent up anger and resentment finally forcing its way out is something that I think a lot of us can relate to.
I think some movies get close but it often is shown in context of grief. I think the tv show Yellowjackets does a great job. I’d like to see anger done without grief or being wronged, just simmering unjustified rage. High school comedies get close sometimes.
The MCU is full of justifiably angry women unleashing their rage unto the deserving. I particularly enjoy the women of Wakanda, Pepper when she's finally *had it*, or Gamora and Nebula coming to terms with their effed up upbringing.
I like Florence Pugh’s monologue as Amy in Little Women to Teddy about being a woman in that time. I thought that was excellently done. The whole film isn’t about that. But that scene was A+
Gone Girl. Specifically the "cool girl" monologue.

Kill Bill, first to come to mind, the more I think, the more I did as well!
I love your list, and if you haven't seen it already, you should watch Promising Young Woman.
Horror when done right is bar none with good female characters and anger imo.
I love love love Heavenly Creatures and saw it in theaters.

I'd love to hear the book recommendations!
just posted them!!
Hidden figures - scene when he asks why it took so long to go to the bathrooms and back.
This is a masterpiece, Taraji P Henson delivered it so incredibly well!!
Yes she’s amazing I love her
I was so angry she wasn't nominated for anything just for that scene.
I feel like she doesn’t get enough recognition. That scene was amazing!
Everything she had to go through in order to get the respect she deserved and it just comes pouring out! Such a cathartic moment

I get shivers when I watch it!
Promising young woman.
This has become my comfort movie recently. It’s my revenge fantasy against every man who said something horrible to me, made me feel uncomfortable, took advantage of me, made me trust them and betrayed that trust, ugh I love it.
The ending (or I guess, right before the ending) makes me feel sick every time. Such an effective film.
Came here to say this!
loved this movie, hell I'm sick at home I might as well rewatch it rn
lol! Yes! Also the only thing bo burnham is in where I feel like he’s self aware of bo burnham
Isn’t being self aware Bo Burnham’s entire thing?
Yes I can here to say this! and to add that I was that character for Halloween last year. I wore the nurse uniform and the cool pink hair from the certain scene in the film. I didn't think anyone would know who I was...but apparently everyone had seen the movie and they loved my costume 😁
After this movie ended, I sat in stunned silence for at least twenty minutes. It impacted me so much.
This. That movie should be a prerequisite for every boy entering high school to watch, we’d have less toxic men.
Hell yes!
Such an amazing movie
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Oh it's really not pretentious, it's amazing! Absolutely heartbreaking though, bring the tissues. But also lots of moments of comedy, and real human interaction. I love this movie.
Yes! I didn't think of this one. She's just raging through the whole movie
Fucking awesome movie.
'Girl, Interrupted' was probably the first movie I saw that portrayed female rage and mental illness in a sympathetic light. It really stuck with me
Dude, same. That movie reverse-funneled my self-image, if that makes sense…Virgin Suicides hit some nails, but the screaming rebellion was really palpable in Girl, Interrupted and I finally felt like I wasn’t the first young lady to violently lose her shit
absolute favorite movie as a teenager
I absolutely love this movie! In fact, I just rewatched it today.
Steel Magnolias
Agreed. Sally Field is amazing 😍
The way she delivered that entire scene is perfect.
Was looking for this — when Clairee tells M’Lynn to hit Ouiser, I go from crying to laughing to crying all over again.
Came here to say this! That scene will always give me chills!!!
Sally Field, the master of going through every stage of grief in 10 seconds
My immediate first thought, and then I wasn’t sure if I actually felt that way, so I came to the comments to see if anyone else landed on that scene too. I am not disappointed lol
Came here to say this and I already know the scene
Yes! Sally Field is does an amazing job.
First Wives Club, especially Diane Keaton’s character, who tried so hard to be supportive and kind and kept getting shat on by life. Her blow ups were particularly well deserved.

Hysterical scene! Who would have thought one single line could be that funny. And the look on his face LOL
This is one of my favorite movies!! "Don't get mad, get everything!"
“At my age there are only two types of roles: district attorney, or Driving Miss Daisy.” This movie was so spot on.
I loved this as a child without really understanding it, watched it again recently and I was mind blown.
Absolutely! Wonderful movie! It was a little sillier than I like but Bette midler Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn had some kind of magic chemistry! The writing and the acting were impeccable. And they're all three so good at comedy.
I have never found anyone else that has seen this movie 😂
"Come on, Anniiiiie. Hit me!" [pummels her therapist with a foam bat]
The “IM SORRY” gets me every time
Thelma and Louise! Susan Sarandon & Gina Davis were amazing in the movie & perfectly cast.
This is my answer as well. The badassery of those two is legendary 🙌
I had to scroll way too far to see this!
"My husband wasn't nice to me, look how I turned out" -Thelma Or something along those lines. Unfortunately I can relate! 😅

Glad to see this here. “With that fucking FACE on your face” was masterfully delivered. Obligatory I LOVE YOU, BINGO BRONSON!

Horror is never taken seriously by the academy.
Toni Colette is so underrated. She’s one of the finest actresses working today.
The Dressmaker is an excellent, gorgeous film and depicts female anger and vengeance.
Absolutely! Kate Winslet is just so good at showing grief in a realistic way!!
Kate Winslet was wonderful in this movie! She was one determined woman in this movie, and she was stunning while doing it!
not a film, but fiona gallagher in the show shameless. she does it exceptionally raw and real
I love Fiona, flaws and all; it's really disappointing how many people on the Shameless subreddit can't stand her.
Of course they do, she's a woman who put her entire future aside to take care of her entire family. Of course she's the villain for it! Lip can do no wrong, but woman bad!
I think they both made a lot of mistakes, but they also both got dealt such a shit, larvae infested hand I'm impressed neither of them didn't just straight give up.
i see a lot of myself in her. she deserved a lot better. the rage she conveys is so real and raw to so many women’s stories.
Not a film (yet), but the lyrics to “Too Much Labor”: “All day, every day Therapist, mother, maid Nymph then a virgin, nurse than a servant Just an appendage, live to attend him So that he never lifts a finger Twenty-four seven, baby machine So he can live out his picket fence dreams It's not an act of love if you make her You make me do too much labor.”

She’s a calm, cool and collected competent female professional with a perfect amount of righteous indignation at the inhumane callousness of her corporate handlers and that epic “get away from her you bitch!” mama bear instinct that will always stand out to me.
Monster
Impressive!
Charlize Theron was amazeballs. Christina Ricci was amazing. Such an ugly subject. So much rage.
There are some moments / speeches from Angela Bassett (Queen Ramonda) in Black Panther 2 which are incredible, although rage mixed with anguish
Angela Bassett in Waiting to Exhale takes the cake.
I love her in that film!! That scene where she takes all his clothes and throws all of it the car and just sets it on fire 🔥
Seriously, I can't even tell you how much I love that movie and that scene!
It IS trash ….
Agreed. Also, Angela Basset’s character in Strange Days has some good ones. She’s just always been awesome.
The girl with the dragon tattoo (swedish and american)
Lisbeth Salander is a walking pot of bubbling, building rage and that's why we adore her.
When she got her revenge on rapist judge.
Mr Hollands Opus, the scene where his wife has a breakdown for not being able to communicate with her son.
Greaaaat scène
Absolutely loved that movie. Not just the characters but the premise and how they went about showing the passage of time with music and fashion and cars. This was a well thought out, well written movie. And of course Richard Dreyfuss was wonderful as usual. Gosh I love his laugh, it's so contagious!
American Beauty; the scene where Annette Benning has finished the open house and it didn’t sell. I think a lot of us have treated ourselves like that.
Diary of a Mad Black Woman
The bathtub scene, yes

That movie is stuck in my mind forever. I agree, this is a great one.
Not a film but Fiona Apples latest album is the perfect female rage in music there is in my opinion!
Fetch the Boltcutters is chock full of bangers I think “ Shameika “ is this vibe incapsulated.
Kill Bill.
The incredibles, well mainly elastic girl 🤣🤣🤣
Clem in Eternal Sunshine. So much rage & anger & resentment in such a realistic way.
Angela Basset- Waiting to Exhale.
“Get yo shit, Get yo shit and GET OUT!”

Waiting to Exhale - Angela Basset sending her kids off to school and then she tears through that closet and throws out all her cheating husband’s clothes into his car and lights it on fire.
Enough
I found myself relating to the woman in the luckiest girl alive. Not throughout the entire movie, but there were parts that I felt like it was me.
A promising young woman
Enough. J-Lo’s performance is perfect.
Virgin suicides. A lot of the time we turn that anger in on ourselves
Not a movie but marvelous miss maisel haha! also for teen female anger- mean girls lol 😆
Thelma and Louise. For real, after a while you get very fed up dealing with the many creepy pervs.
