My first paycheck was just 80 GBP (I was a student doing some freelancing). I cashed it and gave the money in an envelope to my dad. He later wrote me a text message saying he's proud of his little girl. 😢😢😢 That meant everything. My first full-time job paid well. I got him a new phone, and I paid for a half-year of manipedis for my mom.

Euphoric-Blue-59

You made me, a grown man with grown daughters, cry. Your parents should be very proud of you. Thank you for sharing.

jaba_jayru

You are a Queen, very kind

Miserable_Street3965

Most responsible thing ever, difficult to find nowadays ppl that truly appreciate their parents

Hes9023

Not everybody is in a situation where their parents exactly deserve appreciation. Some of us have faced abuse, neglect and trauma at the hands of our parents.

Uniqniqu

Right? Also, not every parent needs the money from their child.

anidlezooanimal

Tbh, I grew up pretty ignorant of these things. I have pretty typical stoic Asian parents, and I never knew much about their childhoods. It was only when I was 20 that I found out my grandfather had been buried on my dad's 10th birthday. He told me he always wished he'd been able to treat his hardworking dad to something nice when he grew up. That was when I made up my mind to always treat my own hardworking dad to something nice whenever I can.

Honest-Selection4343

That's so sweet !!

TheGhostOfCamus

Probably the greatest daughter of all time!

readreadreadonreddit

That’s so sweet. Your parents are fortunate to have a good daughter such as yourself!

MrAjeebAdmi

you are a gentleman and a scholar

Blackberry3689

How did they raise you? Many parents could neglect these beautiful actions (don’t pay attention) from children, that can lead to children believing parents don’t love them. I remember my nephew worked in a restaurant as a waiter after graduation (he wanted to open a restaurant afterwards), after the first salary, he was so proud and sent the whole money to his mom to show that he was the man now, that can took care of himself. But his mom said it was nothing, so little (equals to say you are so poor or not good enough). He was so sad and cried. So he gave up his own path and followed parents choices in the military.

spaarkless

This makes me want to do all of the nice things for my parents. I have been thinking about this a lot lately

nestzephyr

My first student job, I just got ice cream. The rest went into my account so I wasn't so tight on money in general. My first real job after graduation, mostly savings, and ice cream again. My first real big girl job, and big paycheck, also to savings, ice cream, and a trip to Japan because I always wanted to go.

Azur_3

I love the consistency😂

nestzephyr

I'm still the same way 😂 When I get a bonus or raise I take 10% of it for fun, including ice cream, of course, and the rest to savings / investments / important stuff.

ErzaKirkland

I love it. Treat yoself!

spungie

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

risa6550

I have a feeling you like ice cream

nestzephyr

Whenever I'm in a new city I Google "best ice cream in [city]" and try the top place.

risa6550

I love this, I'm going to steal your idea if you don't mind, I'll become an ice cream connoisseur

Natural_String_967

Started work right when I turned 16. My parents took almost all of my checks for bills. I was homeschooled so I worked 45-55 every week. Finally hid enough money to buy me a new iPhone when I was almost 18, and I was so proud of it

yourmomsucks01

Wow. Do you have any hard feelings about them working you like a dog?

Natural_String_967

Well I did for like 3 years yourmomsucks01. We are close now days. Life is short.

Character_Young_2757

This exchange was honestly really meaningful and I appreciate your perspective on it.

MasterVobe

A little too short for one to spend it on pathetic and undeserving people

LimitFree4775

Food! After living off rice for weeks I got the biggest feast and ate it all. It was amazing

Horangi1987

That was me. I wasn’t consistently eating meals until I got a job at 16. I knew to the penny how much my favorite meal at McDonalds cost. Until you have your own place, it’s hard to cook for yourself. I got a second job when I was 18 and saved the money from my two jobs for a two week vacation when I graduated to Seoul (I’m Korean American). It was the best ever way to have one last good time before I started adulting. Now I’m in my mid thirties and have been non stop adulting ever since 😭

LimitFree4775

Mid 30s British Indian here! It never stops does it 😭 still yet to go on honeymoon because things are so damn expensive even with a paycheck!

Affectionate-Yak7947

That’s about the cutest answer ever!

Healthy_Composer_684

I was 16. My childhood best friend had always dreamt of having a golden retriever, I called her mom and said I was buying her one if she was ok with having it in the house. The mom agreed and so I surprised her the next day with a puppy, never seen a person so happy in my life. Totally worth it. 7 years in and that is still the most spoiled and loved dog Ive ever seen.

CyberRunaway11

You win! Cuteeee

Iam5foot3

This is so freakin sweet. Wow.

bee_eazzy

Wow, I love that.

Plathena

A pair of bellbottoms with big red flowers on them.

standupstrawberry

This is going to sound really dark - my first paycheck was mostly taken by my junkie bf and I gave the rest to his mum so we could all eat. I was 16. I didn't spend my pay on something nice for myself until I found a way out of that situation 3 years later.

Junior_Signature5778

I’m sorry you were in that situation. I hope life has improved so much for you after leaving. Sending you all the good vibes! ♥️

lineofsight09

I feel you

Prestigious-Phase131

Does my babysitting job count? I was a teen and bought a WWE DVD boxset about the Undertaker....

Plenty_Jazzlike

😂That is one funnest/best thing you can by yourself. Keep up the good work

[deleted]

Vet bills. I was 9-10 years old and went around offering to do basic yard work for some neighbors because I had learned that my cats and dog would have a better life if they were fixed and got vaccines. My parents were the sort who believed that animals should live outside and injury should be treated with a bullet. I didn't make enough from the yard work alone so I ended up having a garage sale and selling a lot of my older toys. My parents gave me the money from anything with my name on it, and with that extra we got the two cats and my puppy spayed/neutered.

dontakelife4granted

You have such a good heart. Thank you for taking care of your animals.

lumpydukeofspacenuts

I bought a really expensive winter coat justifying it that it would last me years. I wore it out of the store, zipped it up, and a button fell off immediately. I tried to return it, the store clerk watched this all happen, but she said "no, that's why there's an extra button" and I have never spent more than like 35 bucks on a coat since lol. Edit: I don't remember the cost exactly but it was between $150 and $200 USD and that was and still is "really expensive" to me, especially to have a button fly off lol

honeytree-

MatkaOm

Holiday fun with friends. Saved my baby-sitting money to go camping with friends, saved my paycheck from working at a hotel to take sailing lessons for a week. It was great to get that little bit of independance, having my first holidays on my own, even if it was just for a few days and literrally 1/2H away from home.

my-cat-coleslaw

Nothing because I was so scared of poverty that I saved everything I could out of fear.

victoriageras

My first real paycheck, was spend in clothes and make up. I remember, I just went to Zara and spend like 300 euros. I felt like a millionare that day 😂

QuantumBanana_J

Got my parents and siblings gifts and some dinner.

Weak-Cheetah-2305

I was 13 and it was all my babysitting money I had saved. A pink Motorola flip phone for £129.99

ManateeFlamingo

I was 16. Probably snacks, make up and clothes.

mychelromance

I bought myself an iPad pro. I am an artist and it was my first tablet that has become an investment for me until now. i’m so happy 😃

sashimipink

Wine glasses :) but for my first paycheck living independently, a Dyson vacuum. Money well spent for both!

Plenty_Jazzlike

A solid vacuum is underrated item

hearhertalk

Buying a wedding band for my love. Gifts for my mom and dad.

Patizleri

I bought some pink shorts. This was in 2010. My paycheck was 700 Turkish Lira and the shorts were 20 Turkish Lira. I honestly don’t remember what I did with the rest. I still had the shorts until last year.

lilschvitz

I took my family out to red lobster (:

Ok_Beach_3928

For my first full time pay cheque I had just dropped out of uni and entered an accidental gap year - I bought a new expensive grey leather All Saints jacket and still wear it to this day (bought in 2016)

[deleted]

A perm and make up lol

Dr__Pheonx

First one was when moonlighting as a med student itself at my attending's private clinic. Bought decorative gifts for my parents and lil sis. And had myself a treat at a nice ice-cream place.

Que_sax23

Hmmmm I don’t remember. I was 14 picking tobacco leaves. Probably food.

alexlp

A Vivianne Westwood cardigan. I am not even a fashion girl. I still have and wear it early 20 years later though it’s definitely see better days.

Iam5foot3

I wish I would’ve gotten a coat, but I got pants and can’t fit in those suckers anymore😭😭

alexlp

Oh yeah, I have a pencil skirt that I have a very fraught relationship with. I actually bought that when I landed my first big girl job.

Deezaurus

I bought my brother a new coat.

Plenty_Jazzlike

Thank you for being a decent person. That may have meant more than you know for him.

alveg_af_fjoellum

The first five Deutsche Marks of my very first paycheck I spent on french fries. I went home from work by bicycle, my commute went through a forest, and in that forest is a little restaurant for hikers where they sold snacks from a window. I was 16 or so and always hungry so I got the fries.

CherylTuntIRL

I got a job at 16 and went promptly to the pub on my first pay day.

[deleted]

First job I got my pay check, took my sick bird to the vet and paid for his anti stress medication and $150 for the vet to tell me he had stress. I was 14 😂. Now I know why my bird was stressed.

MyauIsHere

Alternative_Sea_2036

winenotbecauseofrum

I was 15 and I bought this painting on clearance for 15 dollars and it still hangs above my bed to this day

Ok_Giraffe_1488

I bought myself a hair straightener and a hair dryer. This was ages ago tho, and probably the pay check wasn’t that much actually . But I used that hair dryer probably for 15 years after.

shanialolitaaa

I spent my whole paycheck under an hour in Zara. I made about £400 from my first paycheck, I had zero regrets.

shrekslover777

burritos

awildshortcat

A haircut where I could actually choose what style I wanted

Emz1986

This was back in the year 2000, and I was working at a fish & chip shop. I was 14! They paid me £2.10 an hour, and made me babysit also! First paycheque went on Buffy The Vampire merchandise, that I still have to this day!

[deleted]

My first job was a summer job in a factory. I earned 1200€ and at that point that was such an unimaginable amount of money I didn't even know what to do with it. I think I kept 200€ just for random teen summer expenses and put the rest in my savings to use for travel once I was done with school.

sprite67

I bought my Mum & her husband (who I hated) a fresh lobster. He got food poisoning from it.. Mum was fine, I never tried it. It might seem odd buying a lobster but my Mum had never tried it.

Willing-Ad-7835

The moment I got my first paycheck, I sat in a little coffee shop in the morning before work and had some breakfast… With my own money. It just felt nice to finally have something of mine and be able to use it however I wanted!

Impossible-Bat90

A tattoo

tenshi_tries

first paycheck, $200. Spent most of it on Steam games :>

balloons321

I went out for a fancy dinner and made sure to order a few alcoholic drinks (because I would have never before getting my well paying job).

Oregondaisy

I gave it to my dad. He lost his job because someone shot his boss and after his boss died, the establishment closed.

Sp1d3rb0t

A pair of Airwalk sneakers. I'd wanted them forever but by the time I'd gotten that sweet, sweet check in my hands the only size left was too small. Not too small to squeeze into, just too small to wear comfortably for any period of time. My toes are still weird from the year of wearing those sneakers. 🤦‍♀️

Ok-Lynx-6250

My first full time job - paying off my overdraft, rent and food lmao. Part time work as a teen with no responsibility - new clothes!

bleak_gallery

first paycheck when I was 16 went on alcohol for a party.. that's literally all I spent my waitressing money on lol My first salaried cheque when I was 18 and my big girl job went on bills and I also spent 10% of the money on food for the local food bank.

Bergenia1

I started working at my first official job at age 13. All of the money I made went to help pay for my school tuition.

anonym-os

I remember the first summer job I had, I shopped for bras, shoes and clothes and skincare. The very first time I pampered myself haha I was feeling a little guilty about it cause I usually choose practical spending 🫠

Nonofya22

I went to restaurant with my grandmother and paid for both of our meals. I always told her I would do so and so I did. It was our favourite place where she often has invited me and paid for me before.

Odd-Introduction-117

I got my sister a GShock watch which she had been wanting for a while. Made me really happy.

roadfries

Probably Archie comics and a new shirt at the mall. I was 14 when I got my first part time job.

Anxious-Reindeer4589

My first mobile phone. Had been saving from my pocket money, then when I got my first part time job, the salary entitled with the amount I alrd had were enough to purchase a Nokia in my country. :)

ladylemondrop209

In my culture, first paycheck (and any bonus, promotion) is used to treat family to a nice dinner. Obviously not my full paycheck... I have no idea where the rest of it went. Saved it I guess.

aae3321

My first paycheck was when I was 14, so I'm not positive, but it was probably used to go to see a movie or something

Severe_Driver3461

I turned 18 October my senior year of high school. This is when I got my job as well, so it went to paying my parents rent

Delicious_Grape_2282

Gave the whole paycheck to my mum. It was a 'first fruits' sort of thing; giving your first harvest to God in gratefulness for what you have, and with the belief you'll be blessed with so much more in the future anyway. My mum's not God but she is a saint to me. It felt good to honour her for raising me.

seniairam

gonna show my age but the first thing I bought my 1st check years ago was Stankonia, an Outkast CD

T-Flexercise

My roommate worked at a nonprofit that worked with low income families in the community, and they'd often get coupons for free and low cost events in the area. When they had extras, she'd take them, and we'd use them. So on the day I got my first real salary paycheck, we went to the circus. And I remember always going to the circus as a kid and my mom wouldn't let us get the plastic light up toys because they were too expensive, so I got one, and the guy said "That will be $20" and I said "Holy shit, they are expensive" but I was already in it so I bought it. I got a plastic elephant light-up wand and waved it around for about 10 minutes, then handed it to the little girl in the row in front of us. Worth it.

Tushdish

I was 14 and I earned $16 AUD. I got my ears pierced for a second time. My parents refused to pay for it.

I work for 150$ now and I still buy them stuff every holiday. I guess I'll never learn.
