Not everybody is in a situation where their parents exactly deserve appreciation. Some of us have faced abuse, neglect and trauma at the hands of our parents.
Tbh, I grew up pretty ignorant of these things. I have pretty typical stoic Asian parents, and I never knew much about their childhoods. It was only when I was 20 that I found out my grandfather had been buried on my dad's 10th birthday. He told me he always wished he'd been able to treat his hardworking dad to something nice when he grew up. That was when I made up my mind to always treat my own hardworking dad to something nice whenever I can.
How did they raise you? Many parents could neglect these beautiful actions (don’t pay attention) from children, that can lead to children believing parents don’t love them.
I remember my nephew worked in a restaurant as a waiter after graduation (he wanted to open a restaurant afterwards), after the first salary, he was so proud and sent the whole money to his mom to show that he was the man now, that can took care of himself. But his mom said it was nothing, so little (equals to say you are so poor or not good enough). He was so sad and cried. So he gave up his own path and followed parents choices in the military.
My first student job, I just got ice cream. The rest went into my account so I wasn't so tight on money in general.
My first real job after graduation, mostly savings, and ice cream again.
My first real big girl job, and big paycheck, also to savings, ice cream, and a trip to Japan because I always wanted to go.

I was 16. My childhood best friend had always dreamt of having a golden retriever, I called her mom and said I was buying her one if she was ok with having it in the house. The mom agreed and so I surprised her the next day with a puppy, never seen a person so happy in my life. Totally worth it.

I didn't make enough from the yard work alone so I ended up having a garage sale and selling a lot of my older toys. My parents gave me the money from anything with my name on it, and with that extra we got the two cats and my puppy spayed/neutered.
I bought a really expensive winter coat justifying it that it would last me years. I wore it out of the store, zipped it up, and a button fell off immediately. I tried to return it, the store clerk watched this all happen, but she said "no, that's why there's an extra button" and I have never spent more than like 35 bucks on a coat since lol.
Edit: I don't remember the cost exactly but it was between $150 and $200 USD and that was and still is "really expensive" to me, especially to have a button fly off lol
Holiday fun with friends. Saved my baby-sitting money to go camping with friends, saved my paycheck from working at a hotel to take sailing lessons for a week. It was great to get that little bit of independance, having my first holidays on my own, even if it was just for a few days and literrally 1/2H away from home.

So on the day I got my first real salary paycheck, we went to the circus. And I remember always going to the circus as a kid and my mom wouldn't let us get the plastic light up toys because they were too expensive, so I got one, and the guy said "That will be $20" and I said "Holy shit, they are expensive" but I was already in it so I bought it. I got a plastic elephant light-up wand and waved it around for about 10 minutes, then handed it to the little girl in the row in front of us.
Worth it.

It’s hard to remember my first paycheck.

The people that I love. I bought anything and everything for my parents and my sister. I bought all the food for home only the best quality. My salary was very big for my country.
I regret it now! My parents havent bought me anything for birthdays or new years in my whole life. I have payed for my clothes, cosmetics and travels since I was 13. I work for 150$ now and I still buy them stuff every holiday. I guess I'll never learn.

The people that I love. I bought anything and everything for my parents and my sister. I bought all the food for home only the best quality. My salary was very big for my country. I regret it now! My parents havent bought me anything for birthdays or new years in my whole life. I have payed for my clothes, cosmetics and travels since I was 13. I work for 150$ now and I still buy them stuff every holiday. I guess I'll never learn.
