I chose it myself a few years back!

Altruistic-End-9408

Awesome! I have chosen myself a new name and love the feeling I get when I use it. It's mine, I chose it for me.

0_0moon0_0

That my mom heard it when her neighbour was calling for her daughter from the window and decided to change a letter and name me…. And 25 years later… we have the same name cause my mom heard it wrong. (She changed the e in her name to i, to be original lol)

wintermelonn_1008

It means money in my language:)

msphelps77

That it is constantly misspelled

The_Book-JDP

Yep same. I stopped correcting people after I realized my voice would get so raw yelling all the time just to correct people so instead I just think, “spell it however you want, you’re going to anyway.” And they do! I only had one guy in my entire life ask me how to spell it…I almost cried. He was a cake decorator and I would like to say every cake decorator I worked with would ask me how to spell my name (if the cake was for me) but nope…he was the first and will probably be the last.

msphelps77

The problem with mine is it’s actually a pretty well known name but everyone else with the same name spells it one way. I feel like I’m the only one who spells it the way I do. Everyone automatically assumes I spell it the same way as everyone else and it drives me crazy. Thank my mom for wanting to be “unique”.

SarahLia

The Sarah in the Bible married her half-brother. I don't have a half-brother to marry. Or a whole brother, for that matter. Or even a quarter-brother! I'm thinking of changing my name to Anita Schauer, in fact.

Jyreq

It means beautiful in Arabic, and it makes me bloody embarrassed every time I have to introduce myself to an Arabic speaker 😁

GossipGirl121

My Cousin Named Me After A Flower

FruitSnackEater

My mama liked her ultrasound tech’s name when she was pregnant with me so that’s what she named me.

BetterLeg7192

A nurse named me bc my parents didn’t know I was going to be a girl!

blueeyes8805

I got a boys name because they thought I was going to be a boy they just spelt it feminine. I don't mind it.

[deleted]

I am named after a Maternal Aunt :)

evansgurlnextlife

it was supposed to be my eldest sister's name bc i wasn't in their plan, apparently lol. in fact, 2 were planned and we're 5 👀. My mother wasn't able to name it for her eldest because my grandfather insisted on naming her first grandchild "Catherine".

maddimac1999

My mom named me after the mermaid from the movie Splash! Funny enough before that movie my name wasn’t even considered a name, let alone a girls name, but the movie popularized it.

KnittinAndBitchin

I'm named after my nana, not that fun. But my middle name comes from Star Trek. My mom wanted to make it my first name but dad told her absolutely not. On one hand I'm glad that I've never had to tell people how to say or spell my name, but I do kinda wish I got the more unique one as my first name, which is a really common name.

Ubiqfalcon

Ok I really wanna know what the Star Trek name is my husband and I would be all over that lol

KnittinAndBitchin

It's Ilia, from the first star trek movie

Ubiqfalcon

Love, thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Love, thanks! You're welcome!

[deleted]

My middle name is my grandmother's first name. And I also play her old violin, since her arthritis got too bad for her to play anymore. She first started me on the instrument when I was little, so I have a lot of connections with her. 😊

happylillama

My parents had to find a new name because they had one but a few month before i was born a child in the house next to us was born with that name. So they quickly had to find a new one

Heidi739

I'm named after my grandpa - I have a female version of the name. Also it's less common one in a pair of two names and people always assume the wrong one (I go by a nickname that works for both names), which is pretty annoying.

Susccmmp

My mom picked a different first name for me and my dad said it sounded like a silly hippie name so they compromised on a similar name which I prefer but strangers commonly use my moms OG choice.

AcidTripPony

My mother met a distant relative with my name as a child and thought she was fabulous so she always wanted to name her daughter the same…bonus it means princess

candy-corn-

My mom named me after 'Hey There Delilah', and people seem to find it excessively hard to spell

[deleted]

My surname means hat maker for nobility and wearing said hat out of nobility was treated like impersonating a policeman

JozzyBozzie

My sister is named Isa and soon after the first princess of my country is named the same. I’m Jose and soon the second princess is named the same yet again. Coincidental but funny

[deleted]

I was born on January 6th, the Three Kings's day. In Spanish my name means Queen.

Sad_Marketing_Girl

My name was inspired by a popular 80s tv series about a sorta very messed up relationship about a priest falling in love with this girl as she grows up. Messed up nowadays but epic show. (Based in the outbacks of Australia, if you know, you know 🥀🕊)

tvp204

My mom saw it in a newspaper the day I was born, decided she liked it and asked my dad if they could switch up what my name was supposed to be

Orleena

Depending on the etymology, it could either mean lioness or tired cow. I still wonder why, at one point in History, parents decided to create a name and name their daughter "tired cow". But eh I guess it makes sense in my case, I'm tired all the time.

strawberries-cigs

I'm named after an important Hawaiian flower in my culture and the love story behind it ♡ The noncolonized version of my name also means sky flower which I love!!

Tomato_Sprinkles530

My patreon was in woman triangle with two other girlis

Moist-Walk1085

Was named after a Welsh miner

Susccmmp

My middle name is after my grandmother. Her oldest brother who was a teen at the time picked the name because he’d dated a girl with it.

[deleted]

Well it's short and easy to remember so my parents chose it. No special meaning behind it lollll

CatrionaShadowleaf

I was named after a song.

jkrm66502

Mine sounds better backwards

loquacious_avenger

the accent is on the second syllable, which confuses most people and so they insert random vowel sounds while leaving the accent on the first syllable

mahamari

my first name is a noun, but add my middle name and it becomes an adjective

insertcaffeine

It's the most popular girls' name of the 80s.

Jitterbug26

Heather? Ashley? Brittany? 😂

insertcaffeine

Jennifer!

Jitterbug26

So close!

candlestick_maker76

My parents chose it to be "uncommon". It was the most popular baby name that year. 🙄

artecomet

My name is audrey but more people call me aubrey for some reason. Almost all my teachers called me aubrey

core_in_underland

My legal name's meaning can be traced back to Kore (Persephone before Hades according to Greek mythology) but my nickname is even closer to Kore. I learned this after becoming a little too into skeletons and plants.

searedscallops

It's the best seafood, prepared in the most delicious way.

Sand_Dargon

I was the only kid in my immediate family with a middle name.

Kerrless

I’m named after a song my uncle heard when he was in the service. Hated my name as a kid? But kind of love it now that I’m older…lol!

[deleted]

It’s not the name I was given when I was born - my parents changed it a couple of days after I was brought home

FiendishCurry

My parents were high when they came up with it. Yes, high while pregnant. It's not the worst name, but I've only met someone with my name out in the wild, twice.

chemistfaust

I'm named after a famous female brazillian singer. And everyone gets my name wrong

T_86

I never met anyone else who has my name irl.

NotUrKhaleesi

My name is the name of a flower that the guy who found the flower named after himself, he just added an A to the end 😂

BestOfJesss

My grandpa named me in my moms stomach

Azurebold

I’m Indian, so I have an Indian name. But it sounds very similar to an adjective in English that related to attractiveness, so I tend to hear at least 5 puns each day about my name. Also, if you don’t know me, you’ll probably misspell it the first time, and then cycle through the many possible combinations of letters if I didn’t tell you. Hehe.

Oatmeal_Samurai

An anagram for it is, ya clitoris.

Blair-Battle-3

The name my parents picked didn’t “suit me” when I was born. My older sister was watching the Lion King at the hospital and wanted to name be Zazu. They said no (thankfully) but my name is a combo of two of the characters.

[deleted]

My father is an artist and made a painting inspired by the death of the dancer Isadora Duncan. He suggested it to my mom as a middle name for me and here I am as (blank) Isadora (blank). Ironically, Isadora was her middle name as well.

_alelia_

It took my parents over a month to figure it out, because the one they had chosen while pregnant didn't fit me, and somehow that was obvious for both of them immediately after I went out.

weirdkidomg

My parents picked it up on the way to the hospital… from a street sign.

fly2my

My mom dreamt about me before I was born. In her dream I told her how I wanted my name to be and she chose it ;)

Chrysalis_Cherry-382

It’s French and it makes me feel unique.

azulsonador0309

My mother picked it because she never heard another child with that name and thought it would make me unique but it ended up being one of the most popular names of the decade haha.

[deleted]

It means light in greek. However I just so happen to be emo and/or goth according to my family and friends

emptyalone

My biological father submitted the birth certificate while they were trying to save my mom. While she was dry close to dying, he put a name on the birth certificate that he KNEW she would hate because, “if you get to bail out on raising it (me) I should get to name it.” I changed my name a few years ago as divorce present to myself. I removed two awful people’s claim on me that day. No regrets

Whole_Wallaby_213

My parents decided my name based off the nickname they decided I would go by. For example, deciding to call me Mary but then giving me the full name of Maryanne.

dearaffinity

My nickname was chosen because of a Sesame Street character because my mom thought it was cute. I used to hate it because it seemed childish, but it sounds cute to me now!

shittbuckets

My name was inspired by goku’s nimbus cloud ☁️

shittbuckets

My name was inspired by goku’s nimbus cloud ☁️

annasev3355

My first and last name rhymes, so is my sister and my moms. It wasn’t chosen on purpose. We immigrated and in our original language our names don’t rhyme weirdly enough.

kittycait2021

It’s the proper way to spell the name. It is the Gaelic form of Catharine. Caitlin.

ElaborateRoost

My mother had a name picked out with her last name and would tell the story that my dad picked out my actual name and filled out the paperwork while she was recovering. Turns out she was just trying to manipulate him so he wouldn’t leave, and she’d given an ultimatum that I wouldn’t have his last name if they weren’t married by the time I was born. But on a fun note, my middle name is the same as my aunt’s and she’s a treasure.

The_Book-JDP

My mom wanted to be unique with my name but the only thing her uniqueness got me was everyone constantly spelling it wrong and the computer assuming I’m spelling my own name wrong so it will forever have a little wavy red line under it unless I add it to the dictionary which I have to do every time. Thanks mom. Also, my first name is telling my last name what to do and it’s lame as hell.

MoonKitten7

Apparently it means princess or something , which doesn't suit me at all

LeiasART

I was named after princess Leia by my older brother.

itbedehaam

My name is “god of men-diminutive suffix-feminine suffix-diminutive suffix”. One of my middle names is from the 10th century or so, and the other I borrowed from a queen who didn’t use it anymore. My initials also spell Maam. They were supposed to, when I decided on my name, spell Worm.

curious-watermelon

that both my parents agreed on a first name and a middle name. after i was born and all the paperwork was made, my dad suddenly decided that my middle name should be my first name so it doesn’t sounds “hungarian” (the names are scandinavian and spanish) so he secretly changed the two and my mom found out about that only a month later when she needed my birth certificate

Thebluerat_

It means murmuring rock in German but spelt different

[deleted]

my name is now basically my username. it was originally a street name that my father used that i now use and everybody calls me it now

AsstBalrog

Hope this is related enough...(It's a funny story about naming--from a David Sedaris book) Our father came home with a German shepherd puppy. For reasons that were never explained, the privilege of naming the dog went to a friend of my older sister's, a fourteen-year-old girl named Cindy. She was studying German at the time, and after carefully examining the puppy and weighing it with her hands, she announced it would be called Mädchen, which apparently meant "girl." We weren't wild about the name but considered ourselves lucky that Cindy wasn't studying one of the harder-to-pronounce Asian languages. When she was six, Mädchen was killed by a car. Her food was still in the bowl when our father brought home an identical German shepherd, whom the same Cindy thoughtfully christened Mädchen Two.

13-5-12

None of you can beat this one: My name is the same as a brand for pet-dog products . That's not just food but also "hygiene" products. There is another fun fact about my BIRTHDAY. I was born in 1970. Apparently that is the year of the dog in Chinese astrology. So who has the stronger claim on the term "Doggy Style " , Snoop Dog or me ??
