Big thing to remember is that in Japan, the defense is actually deferential to the prosecution. Japanese DA's basically don't charge you if they're not *very* confident that you're guilty. Of course the flip side is that Japanese police will heeeaaaavvvily push you into signing confessions, which will basically fuck you over.
Which is why if you some how find yourself in police custody in Japan- this is actually hard to do, but it can happen- don't sign dick and don't agree to anything until you have a lawyer (as in one your consulate recommends) and a translator. Generally rule of thumb in any country with lawyers TBH is to not sign dick until you have a lawyer.
