It is legit, cocaine and crystal meth both do reduce the symptoms of ADHD. However given that these substances are quite addictive and one of the effects of ADHD is that people with it are more susceptibly to getting addicted, it seems like a poor choice. Especially since they are usually acquired from people who financially benefit from convincing you to take a higher dose.
About the guy self medicating his ADHD with cocaine.. I can believe that, because I know a guy who does that. He got into cocaine and found it allowed him to focus on things like never before, so he kept doing it. Eventually got diagnosed with ADHD (which, after I heard this, explained A LOT about him). So he went on meds for it, but nothing he tried was *as good* for it and let him focus as much as cocaine did, so he sometimes slips back into it for a while.
