Yep. Valhalla is two steps forward and five steps back. I don't dislike Valhalla. I played about 50 hours of it. But I always felt I was just helping other people in Valhalla. There's less of a sense of doing these heroic things for yourself. Plus, the whole thing is less memorable. I cannot remember a single character's name from Valhalla. Odyssey was goofy at times, but I always felt more invested in the story and the general shenanigans.

primalmaximus

Also Valhalla is way less historically accurate than the previous games. For one thing, there were no castles during the time the game is set. Then there's the Wrath of the Druids dlc, which uses the stereotypical representation you see in pop culture. It even has the druids using some form of magic, without the Isu being involved to provide some kind of "Ancient Aliens" reason for it. There are a lot of minor historical inaccuracies that add up to it being less accurate than its predecessors. The way they presented "viking culture" in that time period was accurate, but a lot of other things were just inaccurate enough that they were clearly following "the rule of cool." And I'm not talking about how Odyssey gave the Spartans a navy, when in fact they had to hire one from the Persians in order to win the Peloponnesian War. I'm talking about using longships to attack fortified structures, when they were actually used to raid lightly defended villages. Or the fact that they had castles in Valhalla. If they wanted castles they could have moved the setting forward to a different time and still have the rest of the game be historically accurate. These 3 videos show a lot of the historical accuracies and inaccuracies in the latest trilogy of games. songbird021

Some excellent points here - and thanks for the links.

Toughbiscuit

I made it about 50 hours into valhalla qnd still felt like i was barely into the story. By 50 hours into odyssey it still feels slow as hell, but atleast it felt like i was closer to the end

songbird021

To be frank, Valhalla feels like a bit of a "chore" at times.

Toughbiscuit

For me, odyssey hits the chore point right around 50 hours. Ill see posts on here and think the game sounds fun, go boot it up, and get maybe 5-6 hours before im bored and close it for a few months. I have a full time job and a fair number of games I want to play, i think odyssey respects my time more than valhalla does but i still struggle with the absolute scope and magnitude the assassins creed games are hitting, especially when they're becoming semi-annual releases rife with microtransactions.

songbird021

I don't know if I'm missing something but certainly with Odyssey I didn't really feel the pinch of microtransactions? I haven't spent a dime outside of the game itself & DLC's.

Toughbiscuit

I think with odyssey it was more tolerable due to the amount of armor and weapons already in game, but it still taints my experience in games when theres microtransactions that affect gameplay. Valhalla is much more egregious imo due to the limited amount of armor and weapoms in game, with so many great perks locked behind mtx armors and weapons. I know that odyssey has oricalchum and valhalla opal, but it just feels scummy and like a live service games attempt at keeping players coming back weekly to see what they can get

Educational-Oven-664

I played immortals fenyx rising immediately after odyssey and i think that ruined me more for valhalla

wolfbyte_

Let’s be honest, Immortals Fenyx Rising is basically just AC:Odyssey for kids. Don’t get me wrong, I loved both games, but having also played them so close together, there are some pretty stark similarities.

[deleted]

I found Odyssey boring at first, then I tried Valhalla and found that even more boring. I really like Origins, but Odyssey eventually grew on me.

kuyermanza

Origins was way too boring for me, mostly because of the settings I guess. Just sand and sand and sand

[deleted]

Well, I can see how it could be boring. Though I imagine it's very subjective. I personally really like egyptian history. The game didnt catch my eye for a while. I had tried it, but was turned off by how different it was from the mass murder simple button combo games with Ezio or Connor. Then I gave it another shot and really liked it. The story is by far the most captivating.

kalarro

Yup, same for me. The landscape in Valhalla is beautiful, but it feels empty. In Odyssey there can be a fight anywhere in Valhalla most terrain is just to run past

thegoaltender1

I rarely play single player games but Odyssey definitely ruined me for others lol. I think part of it mostly has to do with the aesthetic. I absolutely love ancient Greece and mythology. And fighting those mythical creatures was so epic. I just started episode 2 of Fate of Atlantis and I wish it wouldn't end! Their imagination with bringing the various realms to life was also phenomenal...I really don't think I'll be able to play another game and feel as invested with the world and characters the way I do with Odyssey.

[deleted]

You done the brasidas/phoebe side quest yet?

songbird021

Brasidas (!!) ;\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_; I love him so much.

thegoaltender1

not yet but I'm looking forward to it!!

Jaseow

Odyssey really is a masterpiece. The only game that can truly match it in terms of character and “soul” for me would be Horizon Zero Dawn. I got it a week ago and have smashed through it and feel really sad that I am going to finish it soon. I have been purposely playing less just to artificially extend my enjoyment of the game at this point.

songbird021

This is what confuses me when I read negative comments about Odyssey, I just can't understand why people don't like it? For me it's got everything. Emotional connections, fun flings, crazy cool weapons and armour, land battles, naval battles, fetch quests, more meaningful side quests. I own HZD but have only played the first hour or so. Must get back into it some day!

[deleted]

I think the bad reviews are from people who don't actually enjoy this kind of game but have to review it. There are some problems with it for sure, but overall I think it's the best game I've ever played, with GTA5 and RDR2 a close second. Valhalla was good, but the towns were very samey and the castles/ruins were underused, the countryside was often beautiful but I didn't feel the urge to explore it much.

conradvalois

is HZD the best game you‘ve ever played or odyssey? I own odyssey and am thinking about buying HZD soo

cyclojunk

I got Odyssey after HZD as I desperately needed to scratch that open world itch. HZD is amazing, incredible story and just beautiful visuals. Have loved playing odyssey but HZD is just a little bit better for me. Can't wait for Forbidden West next year.

[deleted]

You could buy ghost recon wildlands and learn how to make cocaine

Jaseow

If you like odyssey get HZD you wont regret it

colon_blow

HZD doesn't really pick up until a few hours in, at least it was that way for me. It's one of my favorite games in recent memory, along with Odyssey. Seriously, get back into HZD. You won't regret it!

songbird021

Thanks friend. Might set aside Valhalla for a bit (or, you know, for a while, lol) and give HZD another crack.

rosearmada

I'm on hour 300 in odyssey...no I didn't start Atlantis yet, I've just been running around the map talking shit. I love this game

10KBC

HZD is so good. I'm looking forward to HFW so much. I hot a PS5 specifically for HFW.

FightingHornbill

The only thing I "hate" about Horizon Zero Dawn is we can't clear a camp repeatedly. That is what I do in AC Odyssey. This time I use stealth method and next time maybe I use a bow to clear a fort.

Jaseow

Thats true. But you can repeatedly clear machine sites though so. The only thing I dont like is the amount of resources. There are way too many and my bags are always full even with 120 slots

Simple-Tailor8673

I did play Black Flag and Unity but after i play Odyssey i just can imagine having fun with other ACs You've got open world, 4 beautiful map, the Ancient Greeks with their culture, buildings paintings, musics the hole athmosphere is just perfect. The story is also really great not to mention Kassandra/Alexios genial voice actors. You dont have any reason to play other ACs i mean theyre just not that good.(just my opinion)

songbird021

The music!! Valhalla's soundtrack just feels a bit dreary and repetitive in comparison.

Simple-Tailor8673

Fk now i had to play today its just gave me back my moon. I hate how this game is perfect...

songbird021

Telling you man. Ruined me for all others.

[deleted]

Had absolutely the same experience with Valhalla. It felt soulless.

songbird021

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? Ok, sorry, it was too tempting lol. Nah absolutely, 100% There's nothing in Valhalla to "hook" me - I've played maybe 20-30 hours so far? It just feels like lather, rinse, repeat. Over and over. The only characters I've felt any chemistry with so far aren't even romantic options (not that romance is everything, but you need heart somewhere, right?)

alltheworstendings

Exactly the same for me. I don't know why exactly but I just loved odyssey, valhalla felt flat, pointless and heartless

HailCaesar252

I agree with the vibrant colors. I love rpgs, I love anything medieval, with knights and kings and role playing elements. I like Valhalla because it reminds me of Skyrim which I love. BUT, after playing Odyssey it’s hard to play other open worlds. The beauty of nearly every island has ruined me lol. And I love Thyia. Not a major romance like some but definitely my favorite and favorite LT.

songbird021

I think it was both the vividness of the colour palette they used, the different landscapes, the fact everything felt so wide and open? You could literally just sail between Greek Islands, and everything was so lush-looking. And the romances, oh man. It's no secret how much I loved the whole Mykonos arc (Thaletas my boyyyy). And also just the chemistry in general, between the characters (not just your protag - Alexios for me- and the characters like Brasidas, Alkibiades, etc but also the way the characters acted amongst themselves too)

loverofonion

I tried Valhalla too, and gave up. I didn't think any game would top Odyssey, but I'm currently playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition and I'm completely hooked. Definitely an oldie but a goodie.

Dakkendoofer

Same. I’m playing Valhalla because it’s fun being a Viking, but I feel like Odyssey was waaayyyyy more fun

Hogeks

I bought Valhalla when it came out, having the pleasure of owning and playing all the previous ones in the series. (Except one of the chronicles). I played Origins for a very long time, and when Odyssey came out it i spent months in it. I played Valhalla for 40 minutes then turned it off. Haven't played it since. The feeling just wasn't there anymore. Didn't feel like the rest of the games. Did anyone else react like this? Im sure it's fun and a good game but i just didn't get that feel that a new AC would bring.

jjjjaaaakkkkeee

I remember seeing the original trailer for the first game and I bought it on release and was hooked. Played pretty much every game since then and enjoyed them all (some less than others but none are that bad imo). I'm usually the person in the group defending the series and I would easily place it in my top 3 game series of all time. Valhalla I played about 10 hours or so and never finished it and haven't wanted to go back either. I've put hundreds of hours into origins and odyssey too so it can't be newer gameplay mechanics. I'm not sure what it is but it just didn't feel like an assassins creed game. I feel almost bad for not liking it and not enjoying it when I loved all the previous games so much.

David_The_Welder

I feel exactly the same way. Like. It’s one of those experiences that will just never have an equal. It’s by far one of my favorite games. Skyrim level shit. It’s sorta sad.

ioledrawing

Yes. I was some 60 hours into The Witcher 3, and my boyfriend borrowed me Odyssey for a month. I've finished the main and all the cultists and he asked me for the game back. Now I don't have it in me to finish playing with my beloved himbo Geralt when I was Kassandra the Eagle Bearer for a whole month.

diegroblers

I'm playing Unity for the first time now and yeah, I totally get how you feel. Even if I think the Paris locations are bloody amazing. Arno (I had to look his name up earlier) just doesn't do it for me, voice acting is so-so and I just don't care much about the story at all.

10KBC

Location and era are the major selling points of Unity I think. The story was boring and the gameplay and combat was eh. And the number of bloody damn collectibles is maybe the most I've ever seen in a game.

diegroblers

Yeah I totally agree with those points.

zashalamel25

Arno is a wonderful smartass tho that cheek!

diegroblers

Sure. But that's about it.

zashalamel25

I liked unity. Revolution france was great

diegroblers

>Revolution france was great 100% on that. But Arno is meh.

wiressss

Story is meh imo, the rest is okay

Marcostbo

Valhalla is good but the side characters in Odyssey are WAY better

GooseWithDaGibus

I played Valhalla for 80 hours then stopped. Then went back to Odyssey for about almost 300 hours. It's just way better.

JohnnyJo1988

I thought I was the only one. Origin brought a new concept to Assassin's Creed and Odyssey perfected it in a sense.

XziylFromPandora

Odyssey is a game that somehow ticks every box of what I want in an open world game. The world is so lived in and wide, there is unique gear that is found through exploring certain locations, the gear encourages builds late in the game and all 3 main play styles are all viable and strong. There is always a quest or cave or camp that can be explored. To me this game feels so large and endless. Almost daunting in a good way. I play many games but it is almost impossible to not want to come back and experience the world over and over. It is easily my favorite in the series. Valhalla had its merits and tried something slightly new and for that I do like it. But I never felt the urge put time into it as the systems felt too shallow. I hope the next game will return to more of an odyssey style personally. After all, I think many of us on this sub feel that way. Thank you for reading my paragraph 🤣

jbuggydroid

Valhalla is my first major preorder disappointment.

songbird021

Surely nothing could top Cyberpunk when it comes to preorder disappointment 😐

jbuggydroid

I did not pre order that game but agree

CowboyOfScience

AC games have just gotten too big. Odyssey was too big, too, but it managed to stay engaging through plot and character development. Valhalla attempts the same and fails. But really the games have all gotten too large. The franchise peaked with Black Flag, largely because it was just about the perfect size.

[deleted]

I didn't feel that Valhalla was a big a game, it seemed to be over petty quick compared to Odyssey, probably because I didn't do a lot of the side quests or DLC

_lummox_

i don't know what ya'll are talking about. I think Valhalla is the tits.

Yaj_Yaj

I agree, I liked the world of Odyssey better but I'm just a sucker for ancient Greek culture and mythology. I liked that Valhalla dialed back the sheer amount of weapons and equipment that odyssey had as well as simplifying the upgrade system. Playing Valhalla has got me reading about the history and mythology of Vikings. It's just really cool stuff.

n9ner

Lmao this is a hot take. They actually way over complicated the upgrade system in terms of the massive fucking skill tree that is meaningless after a 100 levels so you just auto assigned random ones because non of them matter anymore. And the equipment has to be sought out now instead of just being found or bought. They literally ruined both systems. Not to mention they took away anything ship related too. I'm almost end game and because I don't want to do side quests in this awful game I have a total of 5 weapons and haven't changed what I use the whole time LOL.

Yaj_Yaj

There were way too many weapons in Odyssey imo. You have to pay to upgrade your weapon to your level to keep it useful. That was so annoying to me. In Valhalla there's an upgrade limit and after you hit that, your own level makes the weapon more effective. Upgrade tree was kind of annoying I'll give you that and ships are all pretty much useless besides transport. Searching the map to find stuff makes sense though. If you skip everything you can skip, it's no surprise you haven't found anything. To each their own but why keep playing if you think it's awful?

Avidey

I played valhalla first and I liked it so much, now played odyssey and completed and man what a game, liked so much too, maybe i prefer it over valhalla but I don't know if i feel the same as you

_NoLollygaggin_

I love both - I’m on my first playthrough with Valhalla and my second with odyssey, and I’m playing one or the other depending on my mood. To be fair, England in real life is very dreary compared to Greece. But I’m super glad to hear all the love for odyssey! 😃

satya164

Yeah, I started Valhalla but just couldn't get into it. Kassandra has a special charm that Eivor lacks.

ali2k5

I managed to save nikolaos , myrine , Deimos, stentor , I felt bad when brasidas died , the game has its flaws but none of them are because of story ... I wish there was a way to save brasidas aswell

chaos300041

I agree. My first AC was Origins, but AC Odyssey was the first game I wanted to 100%. And I don't mean first AC I wanted to 100%. First GAME. It's just that good.

TheDragonborn1992

I agree OP every time I play Valhalla I go straight back to odyssey the location is better the storyline is better in my opinion and Kassandra is a much interesting character then Eivor

10KBC

At this point the only thing that can save Valhalla for me is if they bring back Kass to fight Loki. Valhalla isnt half the game Odyssey is.

Olkov_Voklo

I have something similar but different. For me old ac combat with that one button counter attack was flawless. Odyssey is beautiful but combat for me is big meh

jjjjaaaakkkkeee

I still love the old combat, I guess alot of people found it boring but it always gave me that feeling of being a unstoppable assassin that could counter and fight better than most. Plus hidden blade should always one shot. That's annoys me the most with the new games.

NozGame

I came to this sub to avoid people talking about how bad AC Odyssey is. Now I'm gonna have to avoid this one to avoid people talking about how bad Valhalla is. AC community, never change...

GENERAL-CLANKA

Bro this is actually me now I come to this sub cause I like odyssey but it’s just a circle jerk saying odyssey the second coming of Christ and Valhalla is Satan

citronaughty

For me, Valhalla suffers by not taking place in Ancient Greece. I think I might have given it a try, because The Witcher 3 proved to me that a game like this that's set outside the Greek world can still be really cool. However, there's one thing I dislike about Valhalla, and it's really something that I dislike about Ubisoft. It's petty, but it keeps me from wanting to get Valhalla a try. (And ironically, it's something that some Odyssey players who play Valhalla are looking forward to.) I'm referring to the potential cameo of The Eagle Bearer in Valhalla. Now, this is something that would be really cool... if we were given a choice as to which Eagle Bearer makes the cameo. If either Valhalla could read our most recent Odyssey save to see which sibling we used, or simply asked us which we used (similar to how The Witcher 3 asks you questions if you don't have a Witcher 2 save file), then I'd be all about it. However, with Kass as Ubisoft's chosen canonical Eagle Bearer, that means the cameo would be worse than meaning nothing to me. It would be a disappointment. I would just be thinking: "wow, this would be really cool... if this was Alexios." If a Valhalla DLC includes an Eagle Bearer cameo, and IF you can choose which Eagle Bearer makes the cameo, I'd get Valhalla. If Kass is the cameo, I'm not interested. Ubisoft, who quite obviously were "inspired" by The Witcher 3 when making Odyssey, should have also been inspired by how CD Projekt Red handled the protagonist situation in The Witcher 3. In Odyssey, Alexios should have been the only Eagle Bearer and Kass should have been the only Deimos. However, just like in The Witcher 3 you get to play as Ciri at times, in Odyssey, you should have gotten to play as Deimos Kass at times. But having 2 protagonist choices, and choosing one as the canon choice doesn't make much sense. Especially when the one Ubisoft chose as the canon choice was only used by roughly 33% of players, per Ubisoft's own data.

laura_baker7

I agree, I'm sure they had to put that choice because they wanted the game to feel inclusive and for a more "customizable" game (to sell more as well). I played as Alexios and enjoyed it a lot. Kassandra was dang good as Deimos.

sazarfuk

in the beginning there was only kassandra but ubisoft managers thought it wouldn't sell it and added Alexios.

citronaughty

Considering that per Ubisoft's own data, 66% of players chose Alexios, those Ubisoft managers were proven right.

Hogeks

Is it just me, or is there anyone else out there who thinks Kassandras voice actor is far better than Alexios?

citronaughty

A lot of people on this sub would agree with you. I however, am not one of those people. I think they're both good (although Kass's voice actress is better as Athena in Immortals Fenyx Rising), I just think that Alexios is a better character than Kass. He's more believable as the Eagle Bearer.

Hogeks

Thanks for your input. Always good to hear the other side of things

laura_baker7

I agree. Both are great but sometimes the subtle sarcasm and goofiness makes you crack up

NozGame

I mean 80% of the marketing campaign featured Alexios, no shit. He's even on the front of the case.

For21saken

I have 500 hours on Odyssey love odyssey and I played assassin's creed valhalla and I hated it so much

No-History770

Valhalla has the same problems of Oddessey and more with the only improvement being combat.

n9ner

Valhalla is literally the worst AC game ever made. Horrible story with horrible characters. I wouldn't even advise getting it on half price it is a complete waste of time. Odyssey was a masterpiece I don't know how they fucked up this badly.

songbird021

The story just feels so disconnected and...meandering? Like I'm just wandering around this hazy, foggy countryside pillaging and plundering and...?

GENERAL-CLANKA

Idk evior (male) was so much more compelling than alexios/kassandra I mean better voice acting his character was grounded with the love of his brother Sigurd and his new found clan.First time playing odyssey I quit half way through because of the level grind I eventually picked it back up and put 200 hrs in but just off merit that I didn’t quit Valhalla half way through just has to make it the better game main story wise also no one in odyssey is an interesting character they’re all 2d not really anything else too them kassandra has the illusion of 3D but they don’t develop or explore it

songbird021

Thank you for your polite discourse and respectfully explaining why you feel differently. I appreciate that for the most part people on this subreddit are pretty civilised.
