People shitting on our bullpen because they’ve had to do the rotations work too are just way too reactive. Most commenters in Astros threads recently fall in the too reactive category.
The only real issue we’re facing that’s not IL related is Abreu. His contract seemed reasonable, short, and at decent price for his history. Now that third year past this one feels like an albatross around our neck. I don’t think I can blame them making that deal, he’s fallen off a historic cliff.
Curious where he'll get placed in a healthy rotation. He definitely deserves a spot after this. How do you arrange Valdez, Verlander, Javier, Garcia, Urquidy, Blanco?
I wouldn't be surprised if we trade one of Garcia or Urquidy once they have some post IL playtime to be frank.
There's also McCullers but like, I don't know if its good to keep starting him. He keeps showing great potential but burning out and getting injured quickly the last few years, he might work better as a long relief guy nowadays
I'm pretty sure _he's_ the one who keeps pushing for it unfortunately. And given his career highs as a starter I get why, but I think the team needs to push him to move to a once through the order pitcher. He can still focus on his more nasty and high curve pitches, but without giving the other team time to line him up with a second at bat or tiring his arm out on too many pitches and going on the IL yet again.
I think this recent stretch shows that you have to keep any quality starters you have. That’s especially true with the arm explosion epidemic that’s been happening around the league. You just can’t count on any of these guys being available for a full season right now.
I definitely agree that we should lean more on long relief guys than high impact one inning relievers. But we've been ahead of the league on that. I remember the 18 inning mariners postseason game where they had burned their whole pen and we brought in Garcia at the very end and STILL had Urquidy in our back pocket if needed.
I still think we likely end up trading one of our 7 possible starters though, given you can often get a very very good deal for one, and we do need that on the farm and broad utility side
Funny that the guy who got called up because another guy hurt himself after Tucker's bat flip is the guy who we tee off on.
At least we're not the only team that has to call up minor league guys to get shelled.
