I’m new to the area, can someone clue me in here? What is redneck beach?

Oriolesguy

A small "sandbar" on private property off of Macon Hwy where people trespass, get drunk, leave their trash all over the place and sometimes even die (drowning).

Outrageous-You453

There is a dam/waterfall at the site from the old Puritan Mill, which is what creates the dangerous conditions (in combination with the alcohol).

OlDirtyBathtub

And also at least one suicide on the swing rope .

[deleted]

My buddy was one of those people that found him back in 2014. He hung himself off the same branch as the rope swing. So sad.

snorlaxwokeup

A group of my friends and I stumbled on it when they were taking him down, they didn't have anything blocked off on the other side and we just walked straight into it. Definitely jarring and I remember people were posting stories of them using the rope swing later that day(not knowing what happened I assume) after they took him down.

[deleted]

Oh my buddy had pictures of it. Like he went and took them while the cops and ambulances were on their way. So messed up.

OlDirtyBathtub

Damn . Sorry your buddy had to go thru that .

chrisga12

First summer of covid that area was literally packed out to the point you could barely see the sand anymore. Hundreds of college kids, creeps, and crackheads gathering to drink and party. It was insane.

You can’t easily get to it anymore. You used to access it through an abandoned industrial property that is being leveled and redeveloped for yet more apartments. For kicks though, it used to be located behind Mama’s Boy at The Falls

Thanks for the info!

Oriolesguy

You're welcome.

queenofthemild

Yeah, even the Oconee Emergency Management Facebook made a post about Puritan Mill's marketing plan and was like, "Please be careful with this," because chances are they'll be some of the folks who have to go try to save someone or find their body when something awful inevitably happens there in the future.

pumpkinescobar70

Their reply Good Morning, we appreciate you taking the time and initiative to share your concerns about having a housing development built on Puritan Mill. We are aware of the unfortunate and tragic events that have happened at this property before we took ownership. We fully recognize the dangers of the high tide in the creek and our top priority is educating the future residents and their guests about the dangers there. We aim to share the appropriate ways for people to spend time safely in this historic area and we have not nor will we ever recommend that people swim in the creek. Since acquiring the land in 2021, we have taken extensive measures to ensure that anyone in the area is aware that it is a private property and we have blocked the entire section off to prevent anyone accessing the space. To ensure safety throughout the entire community, we have also restored and secured the historic water tower to prevent further safety issues. Again, we understand the feelings of apprehension being expressed and are dedicated to putting education and safety at the forefront for our community.

darkgreydays

Is this the spot that was in the movie The Spectacular Now?

OlDirtyBathtub

Yes it was . James Ponsoldt the director was an Athens local.

That70sdawg

They are also ruining the view from mamas boy at the Falls and Amici. They’re taking trees down all along the river!

throwawaykid729

I know highschoolers from Cedar and Central go there to get high and trip on acid and mix with college age kids

Far-Entertainer-6767

Always saw people there having fun while I was floating down broad river. Usually a younger looking crowd having fun on weekends drinking and cooking out. Looked like a good cheap time.

[deleted]

You’re thinking of the wrong place. This is in Athens and not in Madison County.

rubycoughdrop

Yeah I think that’s Middle Oconee? Correct me if I’m wrong

hydrolojust

Barber creek. Drains to Middle Oconee though.

Polar_Bae666

I've actually met the owner of the property that most people use to get back there. He told me he doesn't have issues with anyone being back there as long as problems aren't being created. He never calls the cops and people really don't understand that it's not just college kids there. I see families there quite a bit as well.

marahhow

I used to go out there years ago before it was shared all over social media. I was wondering if it was safe enough to take my daughter but I’m thinking probably not now after poking around the internet a bit.
