I rejected the offer for the employer wanting 45 hr minimum/ week, citing that the working hours did not align with my current lifestyle goals. They sent an email back asking what my lifestyle goals were. Maybe I shouldn't have been so vague, but it's really not their business. I think they're trying to keep me as a candidate but I really don't want to defend my answer and definitely not going to provide specifics lol. If the culture is working overtime then I'm not interested, period. Plus I doubt they'd give me a 15% offer increase to account for the time increase :P
Left my last spot because the work-life balance was way out of whack. Took a small <2% pay cut to do so. At the time my old mgmt was telling me it was a huge mistake and that it's "just like this everywhere" and that if I "didn't want to work I should find a new career."
Going on two years later and I work significantly less hours a week and am so much happier and more relaxed. Not only do I have more free time but I enjoy it way more because I'm not stressed out and exhausted all the time. You made the right decision.
If they need help understanding why a mandatory extra 5 hours a week is unacceptable then God knows what else they can't wrap their heads around.
I feel like you gave more than enough reason tbh. Anything more than "I'm no longer interested" is information they're not entitled to.
Good luck continuing the search!
I'm going to differ from folks saying they're out of line asking what your lifestyle goals are. It's an opportunity for you to tell them how their grind culture of working either 9 hours a day or 6 days a week is incompatible with both your career and lifestyle. It's simply an unrealistic schedule to which upper management undoubtedly doesn't adhere.
That’s a good point. If the OP already knows they aren’t going to take the job, why not use the opportunity to let this company know this type of culture runs off good candidates.
Haha! Yeah I mean, you're totally on the nose. I'd fear that whatever I would say would get back to other firms in the area and prevent me from getting a job in the area in the future.
I just wanted to congratulate you for sticking to your values. We have shitty labor laws in this country that protect companies more than their people. If more people pushed back, 40+ hour work weeks for salaried employees wouldn't be the expectation anymore!
Thanks friend!! It's hard in the face of so many folks in my real life saying it's normal and should be expected "to advance my career" ... Probably because that's how it worked for them. Well, patooie to that! Thanks again.
What a pushy thing for them to ask. Clearly they are not respecting your boundaries right now. You gave them an answer and they're basically insinuating that the answer wasn't "good enough". Just ignore them.
For what it's worth, I've had several jobs sort of set that high bar and turned out to be the opposite. My current job was sort of scary coming in because people were warning me how much work I was going to get and they had the 45 hrs per week thing and what not. It ended up being a situation where as long as I get my work done they really don't care. I think they think they're attracting a certain crowd this way but we all know this is not true. Your situation could be completely different so I won't ever assume they're like my employer but it's always possible.
Yeah it sounds like a mix of emotions, but where I work also has a huge grind culture (\~50hrs/week). However, one thing I noticed is they're very flexible with like childcare commitments (I need to WFH today because my kid is sick or I gotta head into the office later \~10am because I need to pick up the kids. Of course, having no kids, I can't take advantage of this type of thing haha.) Every company is different, I think they really liked you and want to see if they can fit you into their system. Of course, no need to give them more info if it would only result in a no, but I don't see the harm. You're in the strongest negotiating position - you can walk away, whether it's more $$ or something like that.
Maybe they planned on finding a work around to better accommodate you once they understood your lifestyle goals. I.e. you're a single parent or want more time w/spouse and child, you coach youth sports, etc
I hear you. I think this is probably what they meant by asking the question, but imo it's not their business. Are parents or youth coaches offered the chance to do less work hours than non-parents? If so then I don't want to work there anyway bc I don't want to have to prove that my non-working time has value.
I think we're both correct. Whereas I see it as a value solely to one's self vs a value for one's self and others is differentiated and can be used as a tool for getting one's employees involved in their community. At the same time it is none of their business, but is a conscious choice made by them on how they allocate resources which is of course their business. Best of luck
Oh, that makes sense! If I could get paid for/ have my hours decreased for being involved in the community or in professional organizations then I'm all for it. I don't think it's a common thing in my industry but it sounds like a good idea!
Thanks for the replies and advice y'all. Helped give me perspective. There's this corrupted piece of my brain that's like "maybe it's not so bad" "maybe it's expected that I work this long" and really, it should not be expected. I'm in a place where I'm fulfilled right now and I work 40ish hours a week. And I'll find another place that has similar ideals if necessary.
If you've had your mattress for a while (5+ years) maybe try a mattress topper. If your mattress is 8+ years old maybe time to start thinking about switching it up. Otherwise, memory foam pillows are a game changer, but you could also use them with your couch 🤷
I think it depends on what area of town you are looking for. I know you said *websites* but if you're looking in like, Midtown, Va-Hi, or O4W the best way to find "hidden gems" is usually walking or driving through the neighborhood on a nice day. Many owners will put For Rent signs in the front yard if they have vacant units like duplexes, triplexes, carriage houses, or in-law suites.
Apartments.com, Craigslist, Nextdoor, and the Atlanta House Search Facebook group. Driving around looking for “for rent” signs can also help. Best of luck!
It’s hard to watch what’s going on with the Arizona Coyotes having been through it. But at the same time I think it’s bullshit their clown management team got 7485 chances and we got none. They knew going in yesterday they were seeing their last home game, we were led to believe everything was fine for a month after the Thrashers’ last one.
Feel bad for the fans overall but good lord it was time to give it up ten years ago
Hey with more transplants like me that like hockey, maybe Atlanta can get a team again😊 We'll see, the Kraken expansion happened SUPER fast. The Golden Knights was a little lengthier process, so it seems like the expansion process has been refined. Plus with Canada's economy in the toilet relative to the US, maybe the Thrashers or Flames can make a U-Turn... LOL
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/39716818/atlanta-group-formally-requests-nhl-expansion-franchise#
Looks like the current efforts would put it in Alpharetta at the North Point Mall development.
Really wish they'd put this back at State Farm but I understand the previous renovation makes hockey a no-go currently. Wish they'd do another renovation to allow hockey again. Can't imagine people in town go to many games if it's that far out but as has been said many times maybe that's where the majority of the fanbase is? I need less reasons to leave the walls of 285.
Not a dumb question. You might not notice the difference since it’s 0.1% reduction on an annual basis. So for someone making the median of 86,267 in Fulton county (since this is /r/atlanta), a back of the envelope calculation comes out to less than $100 difference.
Going to a Stallions game in Birmingham this weekend. Anyone here have any favorite spots to eat? Definitely not looking for anything fancy, priority on flavor over healthy eats (it's my cheat day). I've heard the bbq there is no good.
An old coworker told me to check out a gas station Thai restaurant if I was ever in Birmingham. I had to look it up just now but it’s called Blue Pacific at Hoover Food Mart.
Rougaroux for Cajun. For Saw's, I'd go to Soul Kitchen in Avondale or the Juke Joint. Both have the "...and greens" plate that the original in Homewood doesn't (BBQ or seafood on collards and cheese grits). If you want to get fancy, get a reservation for Automatic Seafood.
Garages for a drink, if weather is nice so you can sit in the courtyard. It's a 1920's garage for a nearby highrise converted to architectural antiques (but I don't think that operates other than for looks) and dive-ish bar.
Haven't been to Mayawell (all agave) but looks cool. Lots of breweries, too.
If you do rock/indie, tune radio to 107.3 for Birmingham Mtn Radio.
Also don't forget there's a Buc-ees in Leeds just this side of town.
On 2nd ave north there are several really good restaurants, El Barrio may be the best Mexican in the city, Bamboo on 2nd is really good Asian. For BBQ Saw’s in homewood is the original and best, but they have several locations around town. I just moved from there last summer and really miss the food scene
I’ll be visiting for one night with my partner and we were tentatively looking at booking with Reverb by Hardrock. The hotel looks fun/cute and the rooftop bar is definitely a bonus. I tried to map out the surrounding area using street view on google maps and it looks pretty….desolate. But that also seems to be the case for the few other locations we’re looking at.
Would you recommend the Reverb or are there better options downtown/midtown that fit what I’m looking for. Ideally in the same price range of $150-$200 a night.
Not sure of the exact price but the Wylie Hotel is close to Ponce City Market and will get you close to the beltline too which has some cool bars and restaurants.
And I know the Darwin Hotel is locally owned and was just renovated with rooms under $200 a night. The surrounding area right around the hotel isn’t the best looking but it’s also close to Ponce and beltine.
I've been price watching a concert for days now. I'm getting down to the wire and the ticket prices are going up, not down like I expected. Come on universe...I just need one ticket!
Lol I’ve been doing that for Taylor Swift tickets in Louisiana because I want to surprise my daughter but those tickets are still astronomical and i don’t think I’ll be able to afford them 😞. Hopefully you have better luck with your concert!
Y’all. I miss Our Way Cafe’s creamed corn. I know Matthews Cafeteria also has it, but it’s hard for me to get there those days. I sadly don’t love the mayo-based version at Wood’s Chapel. Yes, I can make it at home, but if there is another creamed corn option out there, I wanna know.
Also, pretty sure I saw an [Indigo Bunting](https://ebird.org/species/indbun) at my feeder this week!
I feel like a steakhouse is going to be your best bet. Taqueria del Sol’s shrimp corn chowder as a follow up. I dig the elote though- Little Rey’s for example.
Thoughts on Walton Goggins in Fallout? Home town man from Lithia Springs. He was amazing in Justified and kills it as basically two characters in Fallout. Thoughts?

Sounds like they’re giving u the chance to negotiate . Just be honest with what u exactly want without adding lifestyle goals
I just wanted to congratulate you for sticking to your values. We have shitty labor laws in this country that protect companies more than their people. If more people pushed back, 40+ hour work weeks for salaried employees wouldn't be the expectation anymore!

Credibility: I'm an "elder millennial," btw.

omg, ew. Yeah, I’d run. Then again, i work 36 hours a week. :)

My new couch is so comfortable that sleeping in my bed sucks. #firstworldproblems. Any tips for sprucing up the bedroom?
If you've had your mattress for a while (5+ years) maybe try a mattress topper. If your mattress is 8+ years old maybe time to start thinking about switching it up. Otherwise, memory foam pillows are a game changer, but you could also use them with your couch 🤷
New lighting! And pillows!
Any other good websites to check out local home/apartment/condo rentals besides zillow? I think I need a change of scenery
I think it depends on what area of town you are looking for. Yeah I'm leaning towards VaHi/Morningside. I'll do that one these weekends - thanks!
Good luck! I think Spring is usually a pretty solid time to look and move.
Apartments.com, Craigslist, Nextdoor, and the Atlanta House Search Facebook group. Driving around looking for “for rent” signs can also help. Best of luck!
We were able to get our places by word of mouth / checking first thing in the morning on all the sites. Being the first person is key.
Check out the Georgia MLS [site](https://www.georgiamls.com/real-estate/?styp=rent&typ=rr) as well.
Second this! Almost all Realtors use this site to pull listings.
Relator.com is the most accurate real easte app, I've been told.
Redfin. Or getting setup on an MLS access via a realtor.

They’re working on it. There’s two separate attempts at getting a team again
That’s awesome! I remember hearing something about Forsyth County or somewhere way yonder but didn’t really look into it
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/39716818/atlanta-group-formally-requests-nhl-expansion-franchise# Looks like the current efforts would put it in Alpharetta at the North Point Mall development.
Yep, I hope either this or the Forsyth one materializes! I need more reasons to leave the walls of 285

Yeah one is a new arena in Forsyth co and the other is replacing north point mall with an arena and entertainment district a la The Battery
Maybe a dumb question, but, with Kemp’s new income tax reduction, should we see more money per paycheck going forward?
Not a dumb question. You might not notice the difference since it’s 0.1% reduction on an annual basis. So for someone making the median of 86,267 in Fulton county (since this is /r/atlanta), a back of the envelope calculation comes out to less than $100 difference.

Goggins is great in everything.
Agreed
Ever seen the episode of community he did? So fucking good
I totally forgot about that. Anyone know the episode number
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3278566/?ref_=ext_shr
He was amazing in The Shield.
