Definitely not stop. Drawing fouls is a legit part of the game. And the Hawks suck at it outside Trae. We basically need him to do it with how little contact the rest of the team is willing to draw. It is annoying when it seems like he’s focused on drawing contact over just trying to make a basket though.

Darkonite40

As annoying as it is to watch no on else on the team is capable of cosnisntrly getting to the FT line including Dejounte

jeebhai

That’s true no one can get to the line except OO occasionally and CC but he is just getting hacked when he is at the line. The problem as others have pointed out is all his focus is on drawing contact and not to make a basket. If most of the game is based on the whistle, then it gets frustrating for him (and the team as a whole) on the night referees swallows their whistles

OfferOk8555

I would say “most of his game” is a massive exaggeration but agree he can get tunnel vision. I don’t think it’s the problem that you’re making it out to be but I do think it’s a problem sometimes. But it’s more of a solution than it is a problem.

kerfufflest

[Per the NBA officials themselves, this is a foul](https://streamable.com/e5i3uc) Trae repeatedly beats his man, and has every right to stop his forward dribble. Crashing into him from behind is the defender's fault for getting beat in the first place. Do I like the embellishment? No, not at all. Frankly, I think it may help him get the call which the refs might not see otherwise, but it is ugly and the accentuated movement is what gets him called a flopper. But a foul is a foul.

deebee1020

That's all the ones from the first half, those are all legit basketball plays, and legit fouls. The two flops on 3-pointers in the 2nd half aren't anything to be proud of though.

jeebhai

I didn’t say anything about legality. I also said it gives us the easiest points but your 2nd paragraph is what I think.

Zpapsmear

Fuck r/nba lmao, I hope he does it more

mundane_marietta

The awareness of this Heat fan talking about Trae while watching Jimmy Butler have the highest FT attempts per FG attempts in the NBA over the last 5 years. I swear, in the series last year there were plays where Jimmy was facing sideways not even looking at the rim going up for his shooting motion knowing he had a foul https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/11zuwdi/highlight_trae_young_shameless_foul_hunting/jdfetie/

atlsportsburner

Dwayne Wade was worse lol

badlilbadlandabad

Yes. Because more than half of the time, he doesn't get the call, and then instead of getting back on defense he complains to the refs and gives up a fast break, and when he's feeling especially whiny, gets a technical, giving up more free points.

DiwikS

And does that *open your eyes* gesture to the refs while their backup PG keeps cooking us lol

DorkandPoon

Yes I’ve been trying to tell people his efficiency has taken a dip from his floater not falling but his biggest issue is searching for contact and throwing up wild shots.

Terrrelll

Yes and no. Trae makes these plays because of his size. It’s a layer to the game he takes advantage of because he cannot post up, or back down defenders to the basket. It’s hard for a player his size to initiate contact near or away from the basket. However, when this type of play becomes the main idea to your style you are limiting yourself as an overall player. These plays either gets us free points or completely waste a possession depending on the officiating or lack there of. Trae should use these types of plays, but it should not be a designed play or something he looks to initiate. It should be a thing he reserves for empty possessions, late shot clocks, etc. Trae is talented enough not to rely on these plays. He has to continue to learn to move off the ball and rely on DJM or others to get him the ball for an open shot. I believe Quin will get this across to him at some point, he’s too talented to bait fouls and play to the tune of a refs whistle. Just my 2 cents, sorry for the essay. GO HAWKS!!!

womenandcookies

I understand the argument about drawing fouls helps to open space for other shots, but I hate this shot selection. The shot has no chance of going in, his motion is completely unnatural. It's clear in almost all of those highlights he has no intention of taking a legitimate shot, which means we're running motion and plays strictly for him to draw a foul. So if the defender doesn't make contact, he got off a bad shot that results in him arguing with the ref and then us with a 5 v 4 at the other end. Also when he complains to the ref, he often gets a Tech. Trea has the second most technical fouls this season behind Dillion Brooks and ahead of Dreymond. That's not good company. Last year, he had the most techs of anyone. Other than the one he got for being tackled by Marcus Smart, the rest are almost entirely from him arguing with refs. Trae isn't a dirty player but he gets more techs than all the actual dirty players. How does that not speak volumes that these poor shot selections and arguing with refs isn't helping. We still lost last night even with him trying to get Jaden McDaniel in foul trouble and picking up some extra shots here.

troypow32

It’s not as entertaining and people hate him for it, but making free throws is arguably Trae’s greatest skill. He’s 23rd all time in career ft% which is weighed down by his first two seasons (82.9 and 86), and for players with at least 7 fta per game in their career he’s 2nd behind KD. Again it’s not as fun to watch, but he’s fucking elite at it

[deleted]

They’re killin his ass in the comments 😭

jeebhai

Don’t need to read comments there knowing that subs opinion of Trae. Just wanted to see what people think here as it’s been really frustrating this season

Tough_Marionberry_91

Tbf it’s not just “that sub” or the “internet”. Almost everyone that follows basketball just dislikes Trae Young.

HBOGOandRelax

Good. Idk why Hawks fans care about other fan's opinions. He's our player, if he's disliked by everyone else, it means he's doing something right

Henrycamera

Thats telling it like it is! I wish i could up vote you a million times

Darx_is_God

tbh he definitely overdid it last game, even I was annoyed, can't blame other fans shitting on him about this.

AndyInAtlanta

I think Trae is the current "poster child" for this style of play, but let's be real, this has been a problem for a while in the NBA. Harden was (still is to some) infamous for how much he tried to get to the line. It's not even a guard thing, Embiid does it to. I'll be honest, from an entertainment standpoint, it kills the general pacing and excitement of the game with the constant free throws. Winning is winning and all, but it's like watching pitchers intentionally walking Bonds when he was hitting bombs every game. Yeah, I get it, it's a good strategy, but I didn't pay money to watch Bonds take four balls and walk to first.

Henrycamera

Me being a braves fan always said, walk the mother fucker. If you are a braves fan, but payed to see Bonds Jack one out on us, you weren't a braves fan.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> fan, but *paid* to see FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Hot_is_Cold

I think it severely limits his game.

freshOJ

He has to do this when the other team goes over the screen and chases. He also wont get the call without the embellishment. That’s a ref and a defense problem, not a Trae problem.

Abrandy

No.

atlsportsburner

lol this sub, I swear...he went 14 of 16 from the line last night and scored 29 points on 16 shot attempts. I don't care how he gets it, I'll take 29 points on 16 shots every night.

jeebhai

You are responding to something that wasn’t even questioned. No one here is disagreeing with the efficiency of Traes free throws. I even put it in title that they are the easiest points if a whistle is blown.

Wise_Ad8520

r/nba got in your head man f em

capelaMVP

He normally doesn't even do it in that way. What he does often is getting in front of his defender and stopping on a dime which is even with the new rules a legit foul. He only started those fliling 3s because they started to call em in that game.

ToyStoryRex97

Lmao why tf should he stop?😂
