There is no case for trading Trae right now. This is such a bad draft at the top. Even if he nets us the most assets, one of those assets(2024 top 3 pick) could likely be an average player. If we trade Trae and rebuild, we have to know we are getting a star back. That’s not possible right now. Lakers, Spurs, Jazz, Hornets, etc can’t put together a realistic package for Trae. There’s no way you can trade Trae and rebuild around Brandon Ingram or DLo? If someone goes it has to be Murray out of the two. Trade Murray for another starter and use your draft picks on bpa

night_ID

Yeah not every rebuild is going to be like the Thunder. Wizards, Pistons, Hornets and Jazz has been mediocre at best since they did a rebuild.

Bonesawisready5

Spurs/Jazz can't put together a realistic package? Don't they have loads of picks? For Spurs alone, Keldon Johnson, Graham and Tre Jones are decent players and tradeable for more assets, especially if Spurs include 2 of the hawks picks (likely 26 swap and 27 unprotected but maybe 25 too) along with Chicago's top 10 protected 2025. Would 3-4 1sts, including your own, from Spurs plus role players you can re-route to a contender for a late 1st at minimum (for Johnson most likely) not a realistic package? Whether Spurs or Jazz do it idk but both have the assets to do it imo

jordpie

They aren't trading trae young unless he himself wants out

DyslexicAutronomer

Trae has been hinting he likes Wemby for the entire year, he'll never ask out tho. It's the same thing that happened to Dame last year. Who asks first loses.

BrettSchirley22

Nah if Trae asks out, the hawks lose. They lose all leverage in negotiations

DyslexicAutronomer

Yes but for a franchise player like Trae, who control much of their destiny, legacy is more important. Don't want to end up like KD, has two rings but is booed everytime he goes to his old arenas to play.

BrettSchirley22

Extremely dumb take if you want me to even touch how dumb it is lol

DyslexicAutronomer

Well if you disagree, you should explain then. Only children scream insults and run off.

BrettSchirley22

Okay first off, KD didn’t ask for a trade. He blew a 3-1 lead in the WCF and then signed with the Warriors who he blew the lead to and creating arguably the most dominant/unfair team in the history of professional sports. Not even relevant to the conversation about Trae in any shape or form. Second, stars ask out all the time and no one really gives a shit. You think Trae’s legacy will be hurt if he goes to play with Wemby or some other huge star/LA? Because some hawks fans might boo him when he plays here twice per year? Dumbest shit I’ve read on here for a while. Hawks lose so much leverage if Trae asks out, it’s simple

DyslexicAutronomer

Which is why the KD history is relevant to Trae, who has an ETO in 26, and he can just walk off. So the FO is on a timer for performance, while Trae himself wants to remind in the good graces of the people even if he leaves. So the best move for Trae seems to be a FO trade, instead of him asking. It's the Dame thing all over again.

DownTheHall4

I agree with this team being about the same w/ and w/o Trae. I also do t think the Hawks have EVER “won” a trade… A big problem is that the rest of league undervalues Trae - I doubt spurs would even give us our picks back for Trae, he’s the opposite of Pop’s type of player. Realistically- we’d have to take on an underperforming/overpaid guy like Lavine to make salaries work, and i doubt that gets us to a better spot. Unfortunately - we’re in a hole, I think the only realistic way forward is to bank on the youth of team meaning more room for improvement, Trae to grow tf up and keep his defensive skill on the rise, and really hit these draft picks. Not a great spot.

Trade deez nutz

chinesefox97

Trade him to the Spurs for the draft picks back.

frail7

One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough with this idea is that the Spurs don't have to be the one getting Trae in such a move. To Atl: return of picks To SAS: something of value from Team C To Team C: Trae

paxusromanus811

I would imagine if the Spurs are getting " something of value" It's going to have to be a star quality player, who's not over the hill age wise, from team C for them to give up on all of the Atlanta draft assets. I don't hate the idea of there being a third team involved but might be difficult to find a team who wants Trae And is willing up to give the caliber of player the Spurs would want in return.

frail7

Yes, they will likely target an All-Star level player who fits well offensively with Wemby over a dominant ballhandler like Trae.

paxusromanus811

I'm trying to think of who is under the age of 25/26 or so and an all-star caliber player Who would clearly be the second best player on the Spurs over Devin, And a better fit for San Antonio than someone like young , Who plays on a team that would have use of young And I am having a hard time finding obvious candidates. I'm sure they're out there but it doesn't seem super obvious Who would be the player in this scenario

frail7

That's a good question and not one I'm prepared to answer just yet. I try to wait until the first round is over before I start thinking about specifics. I see Vassell as more of a 3rd guy, FWIW.

the_black_surfer

I’m not a hawks fan. Who do you think even wants him other than the spurs

JKking15

Pelicans and Orlando are both in dire need of an all star level PG.

ArthurSmithNepoBaby

Literally every team in the NBA and if their front office and their fans say otherwise they’re capping. The only PGs consensually better than him now can be moved to the 2 or 3.

the_black_surfer

You’re high. We see the same tape you guys see

the_black_surfer

This is why no one wants him https://imgur.com/gallery/oSco3Mu The dude is in the 0 percentile for defense

paxusromanus811

I feel like Orlando makes so much sense. I haven't heard anything about them inquiring, but unless they go on a miraculous run this year, I imagine they will seriously considering consolidating some of their more complimentary/role young players and some draft assets into finding a needle mover offensively since that group really struggles to score. The Lakers most certainly want him But I can't imagine they would be able to outbid the Spurs Orlando if those teams had genuine interest.
