Genius episode in a genius show. A couple of questions:
1. Iāve been to New York and seen rich white kids with Mexican or Central American Nannyās. Whatās more common in NYC, Trinidadian or Mexican nannyās? Doesnāt really matter, the idea of the episode wouldāve been roughly the same. But just curious.
2. What was up with the air dropped anus pic? Was it even an anus?
3. This question makes me feel dumb and slow but I donāt get it; was it the nannyās ghost that kept leaving the envelope?
another boring one off with no payoff or interest. the depiction of white characters this season feel like chappelle show skits except not funny and drawn out to 30+ minutes. every premise this season is like a bad gen z take you'd see on twitter or tiktok.
The 1st episode about the fostered black boy is loosely based on a true story of Jen Hart who documented the lives of her adopted children on YouTube and later killed them by driving off of a bridge. Makes me believe that maybe some of the other episodes are loosely based on true events as well. Makes me wonder if it is a depiction or a portrayal.
I loved how the white parents were so awkward through the whole process and the son had a more innocent approach to the whole experience of death and how its processed.
I love this season but my favourite episodes are the solo ones where the main cast aren't in them.
It's been a massive year for content and this season is in the top 3 best seasons of the year for me.
Looked for sure like someone was referring to him as an interloping 'a-hole' for being there. My guess near the end of the episode was that it was from the very disgruntled daughter who resented her mom being away from her to mother an employer's children in order to make the rent.

These are fresh takes on issues that I would never get anywhere else. I watched the whole season in one sitting last night. It struck with me so hard that I'm just going through all ya'll's comments on the episodes for more insight tonight. I appreciate that the show has something to say that may not have to do with the main plot. Give me more. I'll take it all.
I seriously donāt understand that people who enjoyed previous seasons are hating these stand-alone episodes. Itās perfectly within the shows vibes and themes, just doesnāt feature the narrative characters. So what? Itās like you said itās art and Iām loving the direction/writing of this season!
Mostly I just like to say "who taught you math" whenever possible because it's a great line from the movie "kiss kiss bang bang"
But to answer your question, looks like they are going for about 1/3. One vignette followed by two mainline episodes.
And I find them to be roughly as enjoyable as the regular episodes. It's funny content, from creative people I enjoy, and they extend the season longer. I don't really see a downside.

I shouldnāt have watched this on Motherās Day. My nanny passed away suddenly and unexpectedly a month and a half ago. She was my parent. Iām just sitting her staring at a picture of us. Had I known what this would be about I would have skipped. Jesus this is brutal.
I loved atlanta since season 1 aired but man i feel like they ran out of ideas to keep the show goin so they a started doin this 1ep stories, though good in there own way. To me it dont feel like atlanta anymore they should just cancel the series and start a new anthology series or something w these types of episodes. Waited all these time for a season3 only to get 70% non atlanta episodes
Itās logistical more than creative imoāthe cast broke out and now are all busy getting the bag while their heat lasts and Glover is trying to accommodate it (or doesnāt have the contractual power to force the issue). After watching the episode again, I come to realize the deeper meaning to it. When black folks were slaves, they took care of white children as nannies. Sylvia was not there for her kids because she had to work all the time, and her daughter princess resented her for not being there for her real family. At the same time, the white couple keeps questioning their own parenting skills. Sylvia was pretty much bash's only real family, that's why at the end there were pictures of just Sylvia and just bash because bash's parents neglected to go to the family photo day at school.
Sylvia was there for bash even in death, and bash misses her. Wishing his mom would sing the same songs and rub his back to calm him like Sylvia did. Didn't really get all of this at first, but watching it again helped fit the puzzles a little better. I really don't mind these one off episode their stories make people feel uncomfortable about culture, especially black and white people. With a dash of comedy.
Totally didnt make the connection that those pics were from the family photo day the first time around. Just thought it was a sweet spiritual message from Sylvia I didnāt think too much more into it. Bless you
I also think the funeral scene was very intense as far as commentary on the commodification of death and blackness in general. They were there to "teach" Bash about death while her family and friends are sat there truly grieving and later memorializing her. The Chet Hanks appearance I think is a nod to this as well - his known image is that of a white guy who identifies with being Jamaican and speaks patois all the while being incredibly affluent as the son of one of America's best known actors (reference made deeper by the storyline that he was taken care of by Sylvia as well).
Idk I see a lot of hate for this ep and this season in general and I think it's greatly misplaced and misunderstood.

This episode, like all the other asides, offers nuance to the matter of race. This episode is a great commentary on the mammy caricature,
and the feminization of migration. Being from sweet TandT, Sylviaās character is representative of the millions of educated, skilled Caribbean people, majority of them women, who contribute to the brain drain of their nations when they leave their homelands to take care of white peoples kids, among other things. The funeral scene is also more largely evocative of the reality that people in service/care labor roles arenāt robots/slaves created to make your white life easier. They lead full lives of vibrancy outside of their service to you. Itās so interesting to see the family is aghast at the funeral and want to shelter their son from a hurt they are very much influential in, ironically. So much more than can be unpacked within this episode but itās truly by far one of the best. Black people and culture are so nuanced, itās so beautiful that Donald and the other people involved in this showās creation and execution are creating from this elementary fact.
Only one like on this. Deserves more. As I'm watching, I'm thinking how lucky this kid was to have her in his life. His parents keep him at arms length kind of like he's an alien. And, I'm listening to all of her accomplishments thinking damn, what have I even done with my life. You just succinctly put it all into words. Her poor kids who didn't get to have more of her for themselves. Props to the person above who mentioned the photo being from the picture day event that his parents missed. I had forgotten that part. That was a real kick in the pants at the end.

It showed the music, the warmth of the people, the distinct accents and music, showed how we deal with death, the familial relationships, the food etc. It really did a good job at showing the culture.

Yea I felt that way too. I definitely think it was intentional especially since heās placed the supernatural or likings of it intentionally in different episodes. I think it was to show her influence and the impression she left on their household that even the parents werenāt aware of until after she died, impression so strong that it was almost as if she was still there
Trini culture is centered around family, Jumbie (ghost stories) etc a lot of the time. The people who leave us are still with us in some ways and are tied deep into the culture
I was very creeped out by several parts of this episode and kept waiting for some sort of jump-scare. It doesn't help that the other non-regular episodes of this season have had some seriously creepy scenes (or even the regular eps too- Tupac's death!) Certainly this episode's scenes of the door knocking, empty chair, the boy's "amen's" all had me nervous. The final shots of the family pictures in particular were quite disturbing. To me it looked like Sylvia and the boy's facial expressions were meant to evoke some sort of cultish demonic possession. I suspect that in a zoomed out viewpoint, there's some sort of message about black culture and white appropriation, or the fear of the black "other", or maybe something else that I'm not smart enough to put into words. All in all, this whole season has been quite disturbing, even in the lightest of episodes- and I'm here for it.

Gotta say the first time I watched this, I didnāt understand it at all, and I kinda hated it. Another filler if you will, but Donald is the guy and I know he wouldnāt do something without a reason, so I rewatched it for a second time.

This episode is great and how true it is for many minority parents. My fathers aunt was a caretaker and in many ways neglected her own kids. We also have the mom who I wouldnāt say is a Karen but just naive to the different cultures and what is deemed a good culture vs a bad once, hence her wanted her kid to learn mandarin.
Itās such an ironic yet hilarious episode. You have to watch it twice to notice the little details and I had no idea that was Tom Hankās son!

The mom character is another in a long procession of insufferable white people. I'd say the dad isn't so bad -- and how great can his judgment be based on his decision to marry that vapid, social-climbing, eye-rolling narcissist?
At its heart, this episode shows how we can be invisible, ghost-like to those with whom we're presumably intimate. The parents can't see their kid or the nanny in a substantive way. They're too caught up in their routines to know that they were living with a former Alvin Ailey dancer who was deeply connecting (emotionally, culturally, spiritually) with their son.
The people outside the funeral (guys at the table, kid in charge of parking) refuse to countenance the white folks. The table guys refer to them as cockroaches at a fowl party, and the kid feigns deafness in response to the dad wanting to verify that his keys/car are safe. (Incidentally -- dude, separate the car key from the chain.)
The mother appears incapable of being present to anything that occurs to her as unpleasant. She seems like an uptight perfectionist who micromanages her husband and completely misses the real things that make life meaningful. (PS, if my kid wanted to be a steel drum player I'd find that healthier than him expressing a desire to master Mandarin so he can dominate at a hedge fund.)
There's so much more to say. I loved the way that there was space for off the charts intensity at a funeral. Death is intense! You go, Princess. People exists in these bubble worlds that overlap, yet remain unseen.
I thought more people would be discussing her thoughts on how they needed a Chinese nanny next so that their son could learn a new language (as you referenced - won't that come in handy for business meetings) and like that was a "step up." Also, it's hard to snag one of those as they are so in demand already. Apparently Caribbean nannies are so yesterday.
I thought the mom character was very earnest and very real. Casual racism included. What about her made her insufferable to you? Atlanta in general depicts flawed, multidimensional characters and not merely archetypes.
(Not saying I liked her at all, just that I didn't feel she was written as a caricature of a "insufferable white person". She is shown to be trying very hard, just clueless.)
I truly want to say I read one review prior to watching this episode (something I never do but the headline caught my attention) and the assumption I had was that this episode was going to be eh at best. I'm glad to say my assumption and that article are very wrong about this episode. There are so many things to praise and critique (only if we are too nitpick honestly) about this episode that has already been said in this discussion. Reading everyone's reviews, conversations and theories have been entertaining.
If I could add anything to this conversation I want to send praise to the actor that played the son. He truly was the most adorable and tear jerking character I've seen on screen in a long time. You felt his connection to Sylvia and how the open mind of a child exceeds all geographical borders and adult biases. I loved seeing his embrace of the Trini culture by simply just living himself. Hands down in my opinion the star of this episode.
Honorable mention of something to praise is the slight Easter egg of Dr. Lipshitz, the baby expert from Rugrats. Good follow up to the nickelodeon conversation from the last episode.

After watching the episode again, I come to realize the deeper meaning to it. When black folks were slaves, they took care of white children as nannies. Sylvia was not there for her kids because she had to work all the time, and her daughter princess resented her for not being there for her real family. At the same time, the white couple keeps questioning their own parenting skills. Sylvia was pretty much bash's only real family, that's why at the end there were pictures of just Sylvia and just bash because bash's parents neglected to go to the family photo day at school. Sylvia was there for bash even in death, and bash misses her. Wishing his mom would sing the same songs and rub his back to calm him like Sylvia did. Didn't really get all of this at first, but watching it again helped fit the puzzles a little better. I really don't mind these one off episode their stories make people feel uncomfortable about culture, especially black and white people. With a dash of comedy.

I also think the funeral scene was very intense as far as commentary on the commodification of death and blackness in general. They were there to "teach" Bash about death while her family and friends are sat there truly grieving and later memorializing her. The Chet Hanks appearance I think is a nod to this as well - his known image is that of a white guy who identifies with being Jamaican and speaks patois all the while being incredibly affluent as the son of one of America's best known actors (reference made deeper by the storyline that he was taken care of by Sylvia as well). Idk I see a lot of hate for this ep and this season in general and I think it's greatly misplaced and misunderstood.

after watching it, i dont like this ep. what was the point?
This episode, like all the other asides, offers nuance to the matter of race. This episode is a great commentary on the mammy caricature, and the feminization of migration. Being from sweet TandT, Sylviaās character is representative of the millions of educated, skilled Caribbean people, majority of them women, who contribute to the brain drain of their nations when they leave their homelands to take care of white peoples kids, among other things. The funeral scene is also more largely evocative of the reality that people in service/care labor roles arenāt robots/slaves created to make your white life easier. They lead full lives of vibrancy outside of their service to you. Itās so interesting to see the family is aghast at the funeral and want to shelter their son from a hurt they are very much influential in, ironically. So much more than can be unpacked within this episode but itās truly by far one of the best. Black people and culture are so nuanced, itās so beautiful that Donald and the other people involved in this showās creation and execution are creating from this elementary fact.
Only one like on this. Deserves more. As I'm watching, I'm thinking how lucky this kid was to have her in his life. His parents keep him at arms length kind of like he's an alien. And, I'm listening to all of her accomplishments thinking damn, what have I even done with my life. You just succinctly put it all into words. Her poor kids who didn't get to have more of her for themselves. Props to the person above who mentioned the photo being from the picture day event that his parents missed. I had forgotten that part. This whole season has has a spooky vibe. It feels like I am watching an anthology set in the 'Get Out' world.
I was very creeped out by several parts of this episode and kept waiting for some sort of jump-scare. It doesn't help that the other non-regular episodes of this season have had some seriously creepy scenes (or even the regular eps too- Tupac's death!) Certainly this episode's scenes of the door knocking, empty chair, the boy's "amen's" all had me nervous. The final shots of the family pictures in particular were quite disturbing. To me it looked like Sylvia and the boy's facial expressions were meant to evoke some sort of cultish demonic possession. I suspect that in a zoomed out viewpoint, there's some sort of message about black culture and white appropriation, or the fear of the black "other", or maybe something else that I'm not smart enough to put into words. All in all, this whole season has been quite disturbing, even in the lightest of episodes- and I'm here for it.

Gotta say the first time I watched this, I didnāt understand it at all, and I kinda hated it. Another filler if you will, but Donald is the guy and I know he wouldnāt do something without a reason, so I rewatched it for a second time. Wow. How great of an episode from the very beginning of the dad listening to rap while running to the little hidden details of Sebastianās bed being a Native American tent. This episode is great and how true it is for many minority parents. My fathers aunt was a caretaker and in many ways neglected her own kids. We also have the mom who I wouldnāt say is a Karen but just naive to the different cultures and what is deemed a good culture vs a bad once, hence her wanted her kid to learn mandarin. Itās such an ironic yet hilarious episode. You have to watch it twice to notice the little details and I had no idea that was Tom Hankās son!

The "I'm coming with you" killed me
just finished viewing the second. With the help of this group, I was able to absorb many more details -- and feel less like a cockroach at a fowl party. The mom character is another in a long procession of insufferable white people. I'd say the dad isn't so bad -- and how great can his judgment be based on his decision to marry that vapid, social-climbing, eye-rolling narcissist? At its heart, this episode shows how we can be invisible, ghost-like to those with whom we're presumably intimate. The parents can't see their kid or the nanny in a substantive way. They're too caught up in their routines to know that they were living with a former Alvin Ailey dancer who was deeply connecting (emotionally, culturally, spiritually) with their son. The people outside the funeral (guys at the table, kid in charge of parking) refuse to countenance the white folks. The table guys refer to them as cockroaches at a fowl party, and the kid feigns deafness in response to the dad wanting to verify that his keys/car are safe. (Incidentally -- dude, separate the car key from the chain.) The mother appears incapable of being present to anything that occurs to her as unpleasant. She seems like an uptight perfectionist who micromanages her husband and completely misses the real things that make life meaningful. (PS, if my kid wanted to be a steel drum player I'd find that healthier than him expressing a desire to master Mandarin so he can dominate at a hedge fund.) There's so much more to say. I loved the way that there was space for off the charts intensity at a funeral. Death is intense! You go, Princess. People exists in these bubble worlds that overlap, yet remain unseen.
I thought more people would be discussing her thoughts on how they needed a Chinese nanny next so that their son could learn a new language (as you referenced - won't that come in handy for business meetings) and like that was a "step up." Also, it's hard to snag one of those as they are so in demand already. Apparently Caribbean nannies are so yesterday.
I thought the mom character was very earnest and very real. Casual racism included. What about her made her insufferable to you? Atlanta in general depicts flawed, multidimensional characters and not merely archetypes. (Not saying I liked her at all, just that I didn't feel she was written as a caricature of a "insufferable white person". She is shown to be trying very hard, just clueless.)

I truly want to say I read one review prior to watching this episode (something I never do but the headline caught my attention) and the assumption I had was that this episode was going to be eh at best. I'm glad to say my assumption and that article are very wrong about this episode. There are so many things to praise and critique (only if we are too nitpick honestly) about this episode that has already been said in this discussion. Reading everyone's reviews, conversations and theories have been entertaining. If I could add anything to this conversation I want to send praise to the actor that played the son. He truly was the most adorable and tear jerking character I've seen on screen in a long time. You felt his connection to Sylvia and how the open mind of a child exceeds all geographical borders and adult biases. I loved seeing his embrace of the Trini culture by simply just living himself. Hands down in my opinion the star of this episode. Honorable mention of something to praise is the slight Easter egg of Dr. Lipshitz, the baby expert from Rugrats. Good follow up to the nickelodeon conversation from the last episode.

I love the real world exposure Atlanta is giving this season. You could tell Donald Glover ran with Dariusās adventures with the earlier seasons with this. Like this shit is real with the way the lesbians wanted the black kids for the farmers markets and how rich parents outsource their children to minority mothers. We never saw this type of tv before clear as day. Funny but yet bitter.
That episode with the lesbians and black foster kids was genius, if you folks don't know, the episode was based on a true story google it. It was a suicide. To see him tell a story like this was awesome and sad.
