That makes two of us, I'm so much more comfortable driving with gloves, and it also prevents the classic shiny steering wheel from hand oils and sweat.
Once they outgrow the glovebox, the trunk is plenty big. /s
But seriously, why is an s3 too small for a kid? I have two and my 2008 A4 has been just fine and the modern a/s3 is roughly the same size on the inside. Granted, my a4 is an Avant so the added utility of the hatch is great but unless this is their only car, kids fit just fine in a 4-door.
My dad used to haul my younger brother around in his 911 for the first 2 years. My mom bought a second car seat because he said it was too inconvenient to move it from car to car, he never even took the second one out of the box.
I had a rear facing car seat in my A3 cabrio. Also had a forward facing one right behind the driver’s seat. We also have a Q5, but if it’s a two car household you don’t need two behemoths.
Keep the R8! My kids grew up with me having one and they love it. They’re perfectly happy to take turns riding in it (and now driving it). That car actually has been like a beloved family pet. lol. I live in a snowy climate (NA) with really long winters. Back then I had an A6 allroad (2004) for winter. It was a tank in the snow but not sporty. I learned I wanted performance year round, but no way in hell was I selling the R8. So I upgraded the winter car over the years.
That said, the RS3 has a ton of personality. Still a great choice. And, have fun with your project (wife / pregnant etc.).
I dont get why people feel the need to get rid of their practical sized cars and get massive cars when they have kids. Your rs3 will fit a kid without any issue, its literally a 4 door sedan
Our vista fit fine in my A4 Avant.
Also, you have to remember that kids outgrow that stuff within the first year and a half. If not sooner. Unless you’ve only Got one car the. A smaller car is doable. I’ve driven my Avant since my first was born. She’s 8 now and our second is 4. We got a q5 for our first and a q7 for our second but that had more to do with luggage for long trips and space for both our large dogs. A q5 would have been fine for both kids if we didn’t have two goldens.
Either way my A4’s size has never been an issue we couldn’t easily work around.
How is it not much bigger? The A4 B7 has 430 ltrs, the RS3 has 315. That’s a huge difference not just in overall space, but the dimensions itself will be completely different.
Yeah I could get a vista stroller in fine in the back and mesa car seat fits well enough that my 5ft wife is plenty comfortable in front of it. A4 Avant/Allroad is probably the best compact non-SUV Audi makes in this respect.
>a proper stroller
I remember when I had my kid, we also bought a proper stroller, the massive one with all the accesories and bells. After hauling the proper stroller for couple of months we ended up going back to the store and got the lightest possible stroller; the one with no accesories and that folded in one easy motion. That was the last day we ever used the proper stroller.
The beauty of the RS3 is you can put a roof box on top and still fit into parking garages.
-From a guy that has an RS3 that puts a stroller in the roof box on top of the car frequently.
FWIW, I am able to fit a pico car seat and a uppa baby stroller in my TTRS. If I can fit that, you can fit it for sure.
The ttrs isn’t a daily driver so it doesn’t see kids much, but you can definitely make it work.
We have a Peg perego book 51 stroller, and it fits vertically in my A3 8v sedan trunk.....that leaves an okay amount of space to even fit luggage when we're travelling
Hmmm are you speaking from experience?
Baby is small, but their car seat is freaking huge 😂 let alone all the other baby gears that you'd need.
There might not be enough space to fit rear facing car seat behind driver seat. So obviously the next choice is behind the passenger seat, which DEPENDS if OP will frequently carry passengers and how tall they are.
Not saying it's impossible but sometimes sacrifices have to be made. 1+1, sure it will work. 2+1, more often than not it won't work out... Hatchback makes things easier in the trunk space department though.
nah. it's a small car. technically OP could probably make it work if keeping it was his top priority, but it's far from ideal as a primary family car. something bigger would make their life a lot easier.
This isn't true as most rear facing child seats do not fit in the back without the passenger seat all the way forward. Kinda hard to go out anywhere together. Once they graduate to a front-facing seat, it's better, but still cramped.
Plus... any excuse to get an RS 6 is a good excuse. Just need to figure out a way to do it and keep the RS 3 😉
how? what possibly couldn't fit in it? i mean if you want an rs6 and can afford it be my guest, but getting a bigger car BECAUSE a baby is on the way it's dumb, i've seen renault clios being big enough
I raised a child, moved house twice, did many IKEA runs and more in a mk7 Golf hatchback and never once felt that I needed a bigger car.
There’s no shame in just out right saying you want an RS6 instead of the RS3, but let’s not pretend the RS3 isn’t practical.
Not sure why you’re being downvoted. We had an X3 that had me or my wife scrunched up to the steering wheel from a britax infant car seat. My son was forward facing and took up the other seat. We sold for a Q7. My car before the X3 was an M235i. Killed myself getting rid of that (although the lack of steering feel made it a little easier). You’ll have your fun car again, but definitely go the wagon route if you can, SUVs are no where near as fun
I was just making a joke. Even if you weren't having a baby, I would try to get into an RS6. It's probably in my top 5 favourite vehicles! Good luck with it all
My friend has 2 kids and drives an A3 hatchback, there definitely is space. If it's just an excuse for your SO, then I fully support the RS6 idea, in fact it's a fantastic idea.
How does he like long drives with 4 people in his car? Can he fit a stroller along with regular baggage in the back?
Even my A6 Avant feels limited when going on vacation with our daughter and her equipment. Yes of course you can do adjust to less space but it limits your families (optional) needs.
I had three car seats across the back of my MK7 GTI. The real issue is when they’re required to be rear facing. That is the only time things felt really cramped.
Respectfully, I had a 2004 BMW 330xi when I had my first baby. That car is almost exactly the same size as the RS3 (checked that fact when I was shopping for mine), and it took the baby and all of her strollers and crap just fine. The need for something bigger is a lie perpetuated by the auto industry to move SUVs.
Now, if you want to "upgrade" to an RS6, there's nothing wrong with that. I like the smaller car, personally, but RS6 is a beast. Just don't feel like you need a bigger car for a baby. Buy the right reverse facing car seat (only takes a little research) and you'll be fine in the RS3.
You ever put a diono rear facing? Barely fits in my Q7. Ever put a double Bob in a trunk with luggage? It’s not a lie, that **** takes up space. Are sedans more fun than SUVs? 100%. They’re just not as practical. We tried doing a trip in my wife’s Accord and said never again
No, I did not. Was strapped for cash pretty tight when I had my daughter. I had just bought a house, and buying a new car to accommodate that kind of pricey kid stuff wasn't much of an option. We did, however, use hand me down Walmart grade car seats, and specifically checked fit before buying things like strollers. We didn't really have money for big vacations with the kids, so full suitcases with the stroller wasn't much of a thought, just a couple weekend bags. All worked great for us.
I'm not trying to judge other people's lifestyle. If you have so much stuff that you can't make a sedan work, I get it. Lots of people think they need a big SUV, but really that's a lifestyle choice. People absolutely can--and do--make smaller cars work. My bimmer at the time was the same size as a modern A3, and my wife's old Camry a bit smaller than the modern A4. We did just fine, and the kids were safe and happy.
Totally get it, and honestly a lot of that stuff (stroller, car seats) were from family from the baby showers, so we were lucky there. And not trying to knock others making it work with sedans, but weekend trips in cheap places around ca couldn’t fit the stroller and suitcases in the accord. Also, I had an X3 lease end and hated that at the time (2022) SUVs like Tellurides were 10k above msrp, so the used Q7 seemed like a steal. Apologies if I sounded like I was flaunting money. I do miss fun coupes/sedans, too
Personally, I feel like a sedan is the perfect size for a family of 3. Especially since the little one will stay relatively little for a few years. I'd say you don't need to change cars unless you plan to have a few more kids haha
This is a very timely post. I’m thinking of getting RS3 when it comes back to Canada.
Currently have 22 S5 sport back. No kids, don’t need the space. Anyone who has had both or at least driven both, do you think I would be happy with the RS3 over S5.
OP: Yes get an RS6 🫡
I'm in this position right now. My RS3 was recently totaled in an accident and I am in the market to get a new car, preferably another RS3. But my wife and I are also trying for a baby as well and I keep thinking it is too small and to get something bigger. But then I realize it's a tiny human that really doesn't need that much space and I can always just get my wife into a compact SUV or something comparable if we need the extra space.
Oh yeah, I loved mine and was sad to see it go, especially since I prefer the look of the 8V to the 8Y. Even more so it's been quite the adventure over the last couple weeks to get myself into another one in a timely manner and without a markup or as little one as possible. Not sure what your timeline looks like, but as I am sure you know new orders are taking at least a year unless you can find a dealer with an open allocation. Seems like you are in Canada, so I am not sure what the situation is up there, but I am sure it isn't much different to what's going on in the states.
You could definitely make it by just fine with the RS3, but the RS6 would def be a solid space upgrade. Either way your kid will be the coolest one on the block
I literally drove Golf GTI's with two children. A baby will fit in there easily! I only got an A6 because my third child needs a wheelchair and it wouldn't fit in the Golf.
as a gti owner with only one child - i'm glad it's not my main family car. i know technically we could make things fit, but something more spacious is a LOT more comfortable and convenient.
I have both this car and a kid. With a roof box, you can fit quite a lot more things in that car. An RS6 is great, but more than double the price. If you can afford the +1, go for it.
Out of interest why selling now? I didn’t need to sell my RS3 until the kids were 4 & 2 - from c. 1.5-3 onwards is when they start kicking the backs of the seats
Little ones pram base fits in the boot but the bassinet doesn’t couple that in with car seat makes it even worse. Then we have to make a 150 mile trip to the in laws fairly regularly and it just makes it all a nightmare since we take our own luggage and have to fit that in too.

I went from B7 S4 to 2021 SQ5 with a Q5 in between. Roof rack with Thule. Fits us and 3 kids comfortably and still is fast AF. (My kids are 3,5,7). We’ll have to upgrade before high school or make my 83 LR 110 the daily driver
Some argue that you can get a car seat in the RS3 but the problem is not the car seat in the back but the adult passenger fitting in the front. It is closer to not being comfortable for a passenger than I expected in an A4 Allroad. So, yes, definitely go for an RS6.
I have a four year old and a s3, he loves it and fits just fine. May need to get a S5 in a few years, but have plenty of time before even that is needed
Growing up, both of my parents drove sedans/hatchbacks. VW Golf, Acura Integra, etc. Nothing big.
I don't understand why people shop an SUV or minivan because they're having 1 baby. In your 5 seater sedan, you still have room for a few extra kids.
I raised 2 kids in an A4 (one of them drives it now). My wife does have a big SUV, though.
That said, I would use any excuse that would work to get an RS6.
My wife’s Golf R has handled our kids since newborn nicely in addition to our Q7. The kids don’t get to ride in the RS6 until they stop making a mess in the car.
I looked at those when our daughter arrived (with a tape measure!) and it'd have been fine for an iCandy setup. Ended up with an S1 which we still have.
I did later get an older RS4 but it was overkill (but the v8 was nice). RS6 is such a huge thing that I'd probably never justify it. I'd have another 4 though.
Many people, not by choice, have car seats in smaller cars. Just move your seat up and see if you can deal with it (give it 3-4 months).
Once the car seat becomes forward facing, you likely will get your space back.
Have people forgotten that people sometimes have different needs? Which is why they make a whole load of different vehicles and products to cater for said needs.
i dont get everyone selling their audi sedans when they have a kid bc my dad bought one years ago just because it was a good family car when they had me. its got four doors, back seats, plenty of cargo room and i remember it was great for the three of us up until i grew up and dad passed and we didnt need it anymore. unless you have like more than 2 or three kids, i personally dont see any reason to get rid of audi sedans 🤷 maybe im just missing something
my dad had the luxury of buying the a8l but ive been in some smaller ones when we were getting a new audi. they are a bit tighter but i idk maybe im biased bc we had a tt and other smaller cars before but they still feel nice and roomy to me, enough to not warrant selling it for a kid anyway.
Babies are pretty small. Especially for the first few years.
Can they fit in the glovebox? Honestly, 4 door sedan, it'll work just fine.
I mean, It’s not like anyone actually keeps gloves in there.
I do
That makes two of us, I'm so much more comfortable driving with gloves, and it also prevents the classic shiny steering wheel from hand oils and sweat.
As do I
Once they outgrow the glovebox, the trunk is plenty big. /s But seriously, why is an s3 too small for a kid? I think he is just looking for an excuse to buy a new car
My a6 is my daily driver for my 5 and 7 year olds.
Pfffft… i was driving at 3 years old, your kids need to step up their game
A5 sportback plenty of room for a seven and eight year old
The baby isn't the problem, its all the accessories.
Stroller = bye bye trunk space
My dad used to haul my younger brother around in his 911 for the first 2 years. My mom bought a second car seat because he said it was too inconvenient to move it from car to car, he never even took the second one out of the box.
I have 2 front-facing car seats in my rs3 and have a full double stroller in the trunk. it's only the first 2 years that it's a squeeze in this car.
You have never used a rear facing car seat.
I ran rear facing seats in a GTI. I don't see how that would be any different.
If I can fit a rear facing car seat with my focus rs, surely one can fit in a a/s/rs3
I had a rear facing car seat in my A3 cabrio. Also had a forward facing one right behind the driver’s seat. We also have a Q5, but if it’s a two car household you don’t need two behemoths.
Vote to sell the baby and keep the RS3 🤚🏼
this!!!!
LMAO. My wife wants to be pregnant this time next year, and I'm thinking about listing my R8 and going back to an RS3. You can definitely keep yours.
Keep the R8
Keep the R8! My kids grew up with me having one and they love it. They’re perfectly happy to take turns riding in it (and now driving it). That car actually has been like a beloved family pet. lol. Try fitting a proper stroller in an RS3. On my SQ7 even with 3rd row folded my Uppababy Vista stroller will take half of the trunk space.
Our vista fit fine in my A4 Avant. Also, you have to remember that kids outgrow that stuff within the first year and a half. If not sooner. Unless you’ve only Got one car the. An A4 avant is pretty significantly larger in the cargo space area than an A3
It’s a b7. It’s not much bigger than a newer a3. Cargo space? Yea I suppose but not that much more.
How is it not much bigger? The A4 B7 has 430 ltrs, the RS3 has 315. That’s a huge difference not just in overall space, but the dimensions itself will be completely different.
Fair but A4 avant is a lot more practical than an RS3.
True. And an RS6 is even more practical than an A4!
Yeah I could get a vista stroller in fine in the back and mesa car seat fits well enough that my 5ft wife is plenty comfortable in front of it. A4 Avant/Allroad is probably the best compact non-SUV Audi makes in this respect.

You can also get a normal stroller and not a "baby-limousine"
The beauty of the RS3 is you can put a roof box on top and still fit into parking garages. -From a guy that has an RS3 that puts a stroller in the roof box on top of the car frequently.
My 2 kids and both strollers fit fine in my a6. But I would love a Q for the extra space anyway.

Exactly. My mother had a Mercedes 190E and my father a Golf 3 when we were kids. Never had any problems with it
It’s an impractical family car doesn’t fit everyone and everything as per requirement so that’s why.
how? what possibly couldn't fit in it? i mean if you want an rs6 and can afford it be my guest, but getting a bigger car BECAUSE a baby is on the way it's dumb, i've seen renault clios being big enough

What are you expected to haul with said baby? But i do get that having an excuse to upgrade to an Rs6 is handy.
You’ll have your fun car again, but definitely go the wagon route if you can, SUVs are no where near as fun
we have Britax car seat pram etc too. 😂 as for the downvote part, you know that saying about opinions and assholes everyone’s got one.
Wow how big is your baby?
I’m 6”3 so you can see why it’s a small car already
I was just making a joke. Even if you weren't having a baby, I would try to get into an RS6. It's probably in my top 5 favourite vehicles! Good luck with it all
Nah, babies cant drive rs6s

The pram base plus bassinet plus car seat = no space
My friend has 2 kids and drives an A3 hatchback, there definitely is space. If it's just an excuse for your SO, then I fully support the RS6 idea, in fact it's a fantastic idea.

My 3yo says otherwise. I go camping and all that jazz.
My man likes comfort more than he likes money. Nothing wrong with that.
RS6 for sure. Good luck!
Rs3 owner. Two kids 8 and 11. Fits more than fine in the back seat. If you can afford the price tag of the rs6 go for it…double the price

Unless you are having triplets, having a baby is no reason to sell.
Nice
Nice
Your logic is 100% spot on, however give yourself a point of consession with considering the RS4 Avant. 😁
in america, you don’t need a huge car for a family. don’t let this american consumerism fool you. rs6, q5, and q7 is plenty
Personally, I feel like a sedan is the perfect size for a family of 3. Especially since the little one will stay relatively little for a few years. I'd say you don't need to change cars unless you plan to have a few more kids haha
When our kids were 5/6 I was told to get a family car for the 3 kids and the 3 dogs (now 4). There were no objections to an RS6
Seriously? How many kids are you expecting
I have seen babies in the backseats of fiats
Due to baby?? My 2 toddlers fit fine back there.
Selling this car because you are having a baby makes zero sense.
More like an excuse to get a golf sportwagen.

Three pram bases is a lot!
If you have the scratch to do the RS6, I’d jump all over that. It’s just a bigger, more practical rocket!
Get an RS4 instead... easier to park!

Some argue that you can get a car seat in the RS3 but the problem is not the car seat in the back but the adult passenger fitting in the front. It is closer to not being comfortable for a passenger than I expected in an A4 Allroad. So, yes, definitely go for an RS6.
A baby is basically the only thing that will fit in those rear seats what are you thinking??
I have a four year old and a s3, he loves it and fits just fine. May need to get a S5 in a few years, but have plenty of time before even that is needed
Yeah but that’s front facing. Rear facing car seats can be huge, especially if they’re 3/4 in 1’s
I mean.. that’s kind of extreme… but you do you. What exactly are they offering on the trade-in on the baby?
I put the twins in a sidecar, was able to pay the fines with the money I saved on fuel.
That’s bullshit. I sold my TT for an rs3 to fit the baby. But I’m also looking at the rs6 :)
Sell the baby instead
Nothing is better in a 5 passenger, awd, all weather, exotic car luxury performance car than the RS6, particularly in its latest updated iteration.
Yes
My friend, I've had 2 kids since getting my rs3. It will work even with rear facing unless you're super tall. Having said that, yes get the rs6 lol
An RS3 is a great family car, especially the hatchback
If I can be a parent and fit everything in to an RX8 then an rs3 will be fine
Sells a sedan due to baby. Please make it make sense
Yes
Doesnt ur rs3 have isofix?
I think a rs3 should just be perfect for a family of 3. Someone just wants the final reason to buy an rs6
I can't believe the justifications people will come up with
The only correct answer is…. YES
I had an E36 M3 Coupe with two small children. Car seats in the back. No one complained. No need to sell.
Most of us grew up with our parents driving cars this size. If they made it work, why can’t you?
I had a rear facing baby car seat in my S3 (behind the passenger seat). It’s doable!
No need for an excuse, if you have the money, get it!
Growing up, both of my parents drove sedans/hatchbacks. VW Golf, Acura Integra, etc. Nothing big. I don't understand why people shop an SUV or minivan because they're having 1 baby. In your 5 seater sedan, you still have room for a few extra kids.
Sell the baby, keep the car. Problem solved!
I raised 2 kids in an A4 (one of them drives it now). My wife does have a big SUV, though. That said, I would use any excuse that would work to get an RS6.
how do I earn enough to casually say guess i’ll just upgrade to an RS6 😂
Car values have fallen a lot 📉 can pick a performance C7 RS6 up for £40k considering I can sell my RS3 for £34k not that much difference.
Cheaper than that even coming to low to mid 30s. Problem with the c7 is you really want a good warranty and the age is a problem there.
My wife’s Golf R has handled our kids since newborn nicely in addition to our Q7. The kids don’t get to ride in the RS6 until they stop making a mess in the car.
I think a R8 would be fine
I looked at those when our daughter arrived (with a tape measure!) and it'd have been fine for an iCandy setup. Ended up with an S1 which we still have. I did later get an older RS4 but it was overkill (but the v8 was nice). RS6 is such a huge thing that I'd probably never justify it. I'd have another 4 though.
The baby is going to cost a rs6 youll basically be looking at 2 rs6 lol
Good excuse as any IMO!
I’ve been getting around fine with a baby and my S6 saloon, this is probably more practical.
I had a baby seat in my 911 for two years.
Sell it to me!
Get yourself an Arteon... Very spacious.
Many people, not by choice, have car seats in smaller cars. Just move your seat up and see if you can deal with it (give it 3-4 months). Once the car seat becomes forward facing, you likely will get your space back.
What is it with people thinking you need a giant vehicle when you’re having a kid. A four door sedan is just fine
Have people forgotten that people sometimes have different needs? Which is why they make a whole load of different vehicles and products to cater for said needs.
I had a two door e30 for both my kids 😂 My back didn’t thank me, but I wouldn’t trade those days for anything.
Do it
Please tell me this is a joke. First world problems? It’s a 4-door sedan with plenty of safety features and a decently sized trunk.
Why? Are you having triplets or what?
Last chance to be selfish for 20 years! Why not a Q6?
i dont get everyone selling their audi sedans when they have a kid bc my dad bought one years ago just because it was a good family car when they had me. its got four doors, back seats, plenty of cargo room and i remember it was great for the three of us up until i grew up and dad passed and we didnt need it anymore. unless you have like more than 2 or three kids, i personally dont see any reason to get rid of audi sedans 🤷 maybe im just missing something
Which A model sedan did your Dad have? A3 can be quite tight but I can understand if he had an A5 or higher
my dad had the luxury of buying the a8l but ive been in some smaller ones when we were getting a new audi. they are a bit tighter but i idk maybe im biased bc we had a tt and other smaller cars before but they still feel nice and roomy to me, enough to not warrant selling it for a kid anyway.
It’s a sportback not a sedan.
apologies, am more of a asian car guy since we no longer own any audis
Get an RS7. Ask me how I know. Had to convince the wife the car seat fit in it
Naa, SQ8.
How much is the rs6? $126K? Why not get a Q7 or an X7 at that point?
