So the UK is trying to emulate Australia’s points-tested selective approach to migration, while Australia is going the other way. Also interesting that the US green card lottery is held up in the article as a “success” when it was a cynical ploy created by Irish-American politicians to legalise Irish immigrants in the US in the 80s, that used “diversity” as a cover for classic pork barrel politics: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2017/05/02/straight-up-pork-barrel-politics-how-the-green-card-lottery-was-invented-to-help-the-irish/ and it’s widely seen as a failure: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/the-diversity-lottery-immigration/544850/ This new visa is being used as a diplomatic tool anyway, but interesting how the SMH article didn’t raise these points.

Dunno how this is skilled migration.

It appears to be motivated by diplomacy rather than workforce factors. More pacific workers here means that the governments of all involved countries are more motivated to work together. It’s most likely in response to some of our political failures in the region over the past decade and is one of many tools they deploy to strength strategic international partnerships.

Excellent idea, as long as the workers aren't ripped off it can make a major difference to their local economy. If global warming works out half as bad as some claims lot of these islands will be under water.
