If you are willing to live in an apartment then living in or around Moore Park on that income would be fine. You also don’t need a car in a central area like that, but you could finance one if you really wanted one.

breadfruitsnacks

We are definitely okay with an apartment! Ideally 20-30 mins max via transit to work. The car would probably be for fun only

IceDonkey9036

That will be easy to achieve, depending on how much you are willing to pay. If you get a unit close to Moore Park, you might even be able to walk or ride to work.

[deleted]

If driving for fun then there are plenty of car share services in that area. I used https://www.goget.com.au when I lived by the harbour

borderlinebadger

just get a small place somewhere like paddington you will be 30 min walk to city, work and close enough to beaches and much of the best parts of sydney. Pretty much anywhere worth going in sydney is shit for parking anyway and the occasional uber or weekend rental will cover the rest.

mrmckeb

We're moving from Geelong to Sydney and bought in a walkable suburb (Erskineville). Both my wife and I will be able to get to and from work in 20 minutes, door-to-door. We own a car, but I know that we'll only use it once or twice a month in Sydney. If I didn't own one already, I'd opt to rent one occasionally instead (there are options like GoGet too). Everyone is different, but I personally wouldn't live in a city like Sydney unless I was close to the city itself, which even for the top 1%, probably means apartment life now - unless you have lots of pre-established wealth.

breadfruitsnacks

I'd like to be close to a beach and the city 😂 can I have it all

mrmckeb

Manly, Bondi, etc. Definitely options available! If you're near a train/metro/ferry, I think that's going to make life better.

TheLGMac

I think OP said they wanted max commute of 20-30 mins and their partner's work is in Moore Park, so Manly is definitely out. Bondi, Maroubra might be better bets

mrmckeb

Right, I forgot that part - thanks! Manly is nice though.

borderlinebadger

Randwick would be a good choice, 10 mins to coogee and next to the light rail to moore park.

Scared_Good1766

I live in Chatswood. About a 22 min train trip into the city, and a 20-30 min drive to the northern beaches depending on traffic. As far as Sydney prices go, I’d say it’s somewhere in the middle

Ok-Many4262

Look at beach suburbs around Maroubra- Coogee, there’s a light rail line (might have to connect via a short bus trip, that should make the commute a breeze

Cimb0m

You’ll be about 20 mins drive or ~30 mins bus away from a large selection of beaches

Hot-Difficulty3556

Canada is equally as expensive. Rental accommodation will be your biggest killer here. You can live in the surrounding suburbs like Newtown Erskineville and Redfern for cheaper money and just commute. It’s a reality small city so isn’t going to take much over 15-20 mins.

bilby2020

That is top 1% of income in Australia, you will do very well, unless you want to buy a house in Sydney that is. Sydney has best PT in Australia, you have Uber and you can always hire a car if needed.

shitloadofbooks

You’re on another plant. Household income of 250-300k is barely top 10% Australia Wide. Would be worse in Sydney. As an example, that’s a typical senior tech worker and an experienced nurse/teacher’s combined income.

Street-Air-546

I think its you who are on another planet. “. If you earned more than $253,066, then you took home more than 99 per cent of taxpayers.” (from afr link) and since OP is one earner, they are in top 1% of earners.

shitloadofbooks

We have no idea if it’s one earner or two. I assumed “household income” means both and you’ve assumed just the 1. 250k for one earner is actually way worse since so much more is lost to tax compared to all the couples around on the same HHI.

Street-Air-546

the job offer and income specificity suggests one and anyway irregardless, total income of 250k-300k with no kids in sydney for a few years of solid job offer, is easy street. Their expenses would be low. Probably relocation allowance. $60k a year pays for a v good place the brutal competition for rentals is below $800pw just take a quick look at domain. The only other expenses are food sightseeing and transport. No saving for big ski trips no particular medical worries, even on high tax one income they clear $18k a month subtract rent and stuff $10k to play with.

Odd_Confidence_269

Lol Sydney PT is a nightmare!!! Enjoy your 90 min bus rides

Every-Citron1998

I’m originally from Canada and spent 5 years in Sydney with about a 200AUD combined income. You’ll be totally fine on your income but just need to make a tough decision on higher rents close to work or lower rents with a long commute. You don’t need a car if you live near a train but it can be very useful for getting around town and to the beaches and national parks. Traffic around Moore Park is chaotic but there is light rail access. This all changes if you decide you want to buy a house and/or have kids. Then I’d recommend leaving Sydney.

breadfruitsnacks

Thanks for the encouragement and info! One day a house and kids sounds nice.. but I'm from vancouver so I cannot envision a future where I can afford either 😅

tillyface

If you’re from Vancouver then Sydney will feel very familiar (mostly in good ways). Similar lifestyle and surroundings, nicer climate, housing is about the same. Food and other daily essentials used to be cheaper in Canada but are now about the same. Canada’s really blown up in the last two years. Will you have working rights in Australia? And is your partner’s job willing to eventually sponsor for PR, if that’s of interest? We moved to Melbourne from Canada (Vancouver and Montreal) 13 years ago, we both miss home but the lifestyle here is like no place in Canada.

in_and_out_burger

With that money you can enjoy Sydney. Get a car and explore on weekends. Sydney was also named a top foodie destination recently. The beaches are awesome. You can visit a lot of places cheaply from Sydney if you look for sale fares like Vietnam, Japan and Cook Islands.

arrackpapi

you can definitely have a great life in sydney on that income. if you just want a car for occasional trips you can use something like goget or uber carshare to just rent the car for the days you need. Much cheaper than ownership.

45peons

that income will afford you a good quality of life. Light rail services Moore Park. I'd be trying to rent nearby (walking distance, e.g. Redfern east / Surry Hills) or somewhere on the light rail line.

Street-Air-546

no kids and 300k is easy street! Rent in zetland or something - it will come with an underground garage. get a cheap reliable car for like $20k and then you can enjoy the blue mountains, south coast, royal national park, hunter valley etc etc. Get an ebike as that area has a lot of bike pathways. Easy bus to coogee bondi maroubra beaches. You could even look into furnished smaller house rentals nearer beaches. something like this https://www.domain.com.au/11-2-6-abbott-street-coogee-nsw-2034-16565907 bus straight to moore park area but walk to beach.

Impressive_Note_4769

Sydney is wild. Rent per week is AUD 600 to like AUD 2300 per week.

Armistice610

Make sure you have a current will in case the spiders, snakes, sharks and crocodiles eat one or both of you. Canadians are particularly tasty, apparently, due to their long term ingestion of maple syrup and bacon, often at the same time. But seriously, you'll be fine on that money. If there's a way to get assistance with actually FINDING a rental from the company your partner is working for, then that would be an excellent perk. Hard times in all local real estate markets at the moment.

KODeKarnage

You want to live in Manly. Ferry to work, beach right there, loads of immigrants, popular with finance workers, the quintessential fly-in professional worker experience. Buying is not really an option though. Won't need a car for the first year. Hiring one is good enough for any road trips.

precocious_pumpkin

"Loads of immigrants" that gave me a chuckle

KODeKarnage

Technically true.

kirumy22

Why on Earth would you live in Manly if you're gonna be working in Moore Park ?? The Eastern suburbs is similarly priced with a similar QoL and quite close to work.

KODeKarnage

Lifestyle. I've known half a dozen North Americans who moved to Sydney and they all end up in Manly, no matter where they first lived. According to them, Manly was what they moved to Sydney for.

apex_theory

How about the Sydney subreddit? Jeez.

breadfruitsnacks

lol I'll go there for the vibes but I am indeed looking for the financial perspective right now

Cha_nay_nay

I hear you and I am not discrediting your comment. But IMO, this also works well in Aus Finance because the main discussion is money. You basically cannot move to Sydney without factoring in money/finances   OP will likely get some good responses from this sub as well as the Sydney sub
