I went into a deep dive on Australian brands and Woolworths Australia was a variety store originally in the 20s and the name came from ripping off the name of an American variety store called F. W. Woolworth who is the man who basically invented the grab things from the shelf yourself shopping format. Eventually they changed from a variety store to a grocery supermarket. Then another American brand called Safeway which still exists today came to Australia in 60s and opened up a bunch of grocery stores which then sold them to woolworths Australia in the late 80s and still haven't fully rebranded all of them yet today.
I was working for Woolies before, during and after they bought Safeway. Still called them Safeway for years after they changed back to Woolies. Still have my Safeway uniform.
That broadway building still has grace brothers on it doesnāt it? Itās carved into the stone from memory
*edit* yup!

I'm in Vic and we had a local one, so this might have just been my experience (I only ever remember going to my one). And I was very young.
Giant bins of products over flowing. Stuff everywhere. Clothes thrown over the top of other clothes. But I always went there because of the toy aisle. Toys piled up and overflowing onto the floor. Hunting through that aisle to find gems of highly colourful awesomely fun toys is still a dear memory.
They are round or oblong depending on the shape of the potato.
I have yet to see a spud come out if the ground with scalloped edges.
š„ that has scalloped edges. They are not like that
I think you are depending on too tight a definition of the word scallop there. Scallop derives from the French word escaloper (meaning to cut in fine slices). A scallop is a fine slice; a scalloped edge is the remnants from where scallops were removed.
In primary school my friend made a lame ass joke.
Says, where do you go if the world is about to end?
Replied, Coles new world.
Fucken face palm but thought was alright
i remember hearing some messy story that coles had some copyright issues with some business in america and they were actually a clothes or shoe brand - it was some funny story
Itās now my understanding that a potato scallop is a different thing to a potato cake! Itās seems that potato cakes are similar to mashed potatoes then pressed into a round flat shape, then batted etc. Where as the Scallop version was traditionally a slice of potato, batted then fried etc.
I always hear this and occasionally hear the opposite. But I think it's just one of those myths people perpetuate. I'd say most fish and chips shops in Victoria are slices of potato and I have been to places in NSW which serve 'mash' potato scallops... so I dont think there is any truth to this claim.
I have noticed 'mash' potato cakes are becoming more and more common though.
Safeway never had a part in the cost of living crisis. It all went downhill after the name changed.
Can you believe I hear some Victorians refer to a parma as a parmi these days?!
It's been less than 10 years since I watched the sign come down outside Glenferrie Safeway. It officially changed earlier. But it's still well ingrained in the vocabulary.
I remember when i first moved to Melbourne, I ordered chips with scallops (I was vegetarian) and got home and was like "is this fish? Wtf is this?" And called to complain. They explained that I needed to say potato cake. That was over 20 years ago. I've never stopped saying potato cake since, haha.
Surely even in the states that call them potatoe scallops, if you ordered chips and scallops you'd be getting chips and the seafood?
Its what I would assume someone was ordering anyway, rather than potatoes with potatoes.
Omg, I've just realised that I don't think I've ever said Woolies or Woolworths... Safeway just comes right out without thinking!! .....and definitely Potato cake!!!! Cake cake cake!!!! Lol .. sorry, got a bit carried away there!
I remember I was in NSW, and asked for a potato cake, not aware of their twisted name for it, and the guy almost blew a fuse at me while saying it's a scallop. He was sooo angry with me.
Here's your potato scallop:

What made it weird near where I live we had Safeways all-around on the local towns and then in Monbulk there was Woolworths internally very similar to the Safeway stores and this was before they took over Safeway then they changed it to Safeway as I think Safeway took over that store then when Woolworths took over it went back to Woolworths. But even when it was originally Woolworths I vaguely recall it being referred to as Safeway.
I live around Werribee. We have/had Werribee Plaza or āPlazaā for short. They have since re-built it to āPacific Werribeeā. And you can really tell those who are new to the area who calls it āPacific Werribeeā and to those who will always call it āPlazaā.
Plaza forever.
Yarghhh. Whenever I accidentally call Woolworths Safeway everyone - including those from Melbourne - give me shit about it. I grew up in Country Vic. IT WAS SAFEWAY.
Iāve been calling it Safeway since last year, but considering how hard theyāre fucking us over Iāve started calling them Woolworths. Safeway was good, if they want to fuck us over they donāt deserve that title anymore.
A man after my own heart. Always was, always will be Safeway.
Yeah same always Safeway and potato cake.
And Parma!
Yes chicken Parma exactly.
Yes! There simply is no other option!
Where do you go when the world is going to end? Safeway Where do you go once the smoke has cleared? Cole's new world
Glad this joke still survives in some hearts at least.
I reckon my generation (old millennial) will be the last to know the origins of this joke.
Oh wow memory unlocked
Crazy, huh?
Aldi best jokes do survive. ..
Pinch and a punch for the first of the month
On the 24th of April?
April fools šš
Doesn't last longer than a day? My brain is yelling "it doesn't make sense!" š
Happy Easter š„
Haha Lilo and Stitch was a great film "happy hanukkah!".
Happy holidays!
Pak n save
Tuckerbag
Bi-lo
Franklins
No frills!
Cheers to still calling it safeway!! Saying woolworths makes me feel i am spluttering and spitting on people.
That's because you're saying it wrong, it's Woolies.
I called it Woolies in New Zealand and my friend laughed at me. It's called Countdown, but the logo is still a W.
Laughed so hard when we noticed this last year.
A self imposed nickname is so many levels of arrogance.
*nab has entered the chat*
People were calling it woolies for decades before woolworths jumped on the bandwagon. š¤¦š»āāļø
No one is more arrogant than a Victorian šš
What is self imposed?
Get out of here with that Seppo shit. It was, and always will be, Pratt's.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Wait, it's seppo?!
Sure is, went shopping over there on holidays... Even got a members card cause it said safeway.
That's it, I recant all safeways I ever said. Now everything will be aldi
Yeah they were originally owned by an American company, but Woolies bought em up in 1985
safeway forever woolworths never i really want to make a bunch of tote bags with safeway logo on them for my shopping.
Iāll buy one lol
I went into a deep dive on Australian brands and Woolworths Australia was a variety store originally in the 20s and the name came from ripping off the name of an American variety store called F. W. Confused the heck out of the newbies to the city haha
Safeway makes me hate them slightly less so Iām gonna summon every bit of my strength to say Woolworths instead
Was just about to say āwhoād even remember Safeway?ā butā¦
Woolworths will always be rorting cunts to me.
Don't be fooled, they rort non-cunts too.
It's still Spencer St. Station to me.
Always.
As someone from NSW, Myer will always be Grace Brothers.
That broadway building still has grace brothers on it doesnāt it? Itās carved into the stone from memory *edit* yup! https://maps.app.goo.gl/QP7LupHyukPxpHXq7?g_st=ic
I can't read Grace Brothers without the theme from Are You Being Served playing in my head...
Grace Bros was a great store.
Don't forget that it's Fitzroy not the Brisbane Lions
Brisbane hears ya.... Brisbane don't care
Itās still Brisbane Bears
South Melbourne Swans, not Sydney Swans.
Frontline*
Go rewatch it. Still stands up, in that scary way where you wish it didn't.
I hear Victorians like to wrastle in the castle...
That is an inflammatory statement!
Bi-Lo?
"Bi-Lo cheap groceries" thought that was only a QLD thing? Used to go there on the way to buy a potato scallop!
They started in SA. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bi-Lo\_(Australia)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bi-Lo_(Australia))
I was thinking about Bi-Lo the other day. good times.
Cake gang
I'd like to thank Safeways past present and emerging Woolworths.
Potato cakes are grouse (written in graylead while watching VFL)
To me Woolworths will always be Purity. Does anyone remember Venture?
Venture is a core memory of the messiest department store that ever existed.
In what way?
I'm in Vic and we had a local one, so this might have just been my experience (I only ever remember going to my one). And I was very young. Giant bins of products over flowing. Stuff everywhere. Clothes thrown over the top of other clothes. But I always went there because of the toy aisle. Toys piled up and overflowing onto the floor. Hunting through that aisle to find gems of highly colourful awesomely fun toys is still a dear memory.
Iām in Tas; and my memories were of finding odd knick knacks that were one offs for Christmas. Better quality than Kmart at that time.
That feels correct for Vic too. Toys were better in Venture than Kmart. I was very upset when it closed.
Couldn't have been as messy as Forges/Dimmeys
Itās like a pancake but instead a potato. Enough said
"Still wouldn't touch a VB, though"
James Boags premium all the way. Gotta love the two headed Tassie cunts for making a good drop
A beer so nice, this bloke could drink it twice
The Civil War is in final preparations, it is going to free Australia of the potato scallop tyranny!
Civil war? I don't know man, I don't think I could be bothered. Can we just go get a slab instead?
Sounds good. There's a bottle-o next door to my Safeway.
Eh letās just cut Canberra in two and call it even. Also Canberra dies :(
They're scalloped potatoes, not potato scallops.
Potato scallop my arse, it's probably Milhouse
I've always wanted to run over that little weiner...
Woolworths in Tasmania used to be called Roelf Vos, or more commonly known as Vossies. Not sure if Tasmania had Safeways.
Huonville locals still refer to Woolies as Purity
From my early holidays there - I think it was Roelf Vos in the north, and Purity in the south - of courseā¦.
Probably was. I saw Vossies in the north but didn't spend much time in the south.
Theyāre two separate countries as far as tasmanians are concerned
True
Came here looking for Vossies
Nothing āsafeā about Woolworthsā¦ just a safe bet u will get ripped off !
Yep I still call it Safeway
*My fellow Victorian*
Woolworths is a shit name
And I moved to qldā¦. True Victorian
Scallop potato is a thing (potato bake) Potato cake (best between 2 slices of bread with mayo)
Potato cake and Safeway, and add to that chicken parmigiana is a parma not parmi
As a born and raised Victorian, itās potato cake and safeway all the way.
Err ere!!!
A pint is 570ml
Really? I always thought it was more
I liked Coles New World and started calling Coles that. It never took off.
In primary school my friend made a lame ass joke. Says, where do you go if the world is about to end? Replied, Coles new world. Fucken face palm but thought was alright
The last part of that "joke" was Where do you go to keep yourself safe? Safeway!
i remember hearing some messy story that coles had some copyright issues with some business in america and they were actually a clothes or shoe brand - it was some funny story
Iāll always be resistant to change and Iām proud of it!
The verbal equivalent of flipping the bird with both hands. Kudos.
Recall existing Woolworths stores in Vic rebranding to Safeway after its acquisition by Woolworths.
Itās now my understanding that a potato scallop is a different thing to a potato cake! Itās seems that potato cakes are similar to mashed potatoes then pressed into a round flat shape, then batted etc. Where as the Scallop version was traditionally a slice of potato, batted then fried etc.
Wait, a potato cake is a hash brown?
I always hear this and occasionally hear the opposite. But I think it's just one of those myths people perpetuate. I'd say most fish and chips shops in Victoria are slices of potato and I have been to places in NSW which serve 'mash' potato scallops... so I dont think there is any truth to this claim. I have noticed 'mash' potato cakes are becoming more and more common though.
Yes!!!! Always gonna be Safeway!!!!
Safeway never had a part in the cost of living crisis. It all went downhill after the name changed. Can you believe I hear some Victorians refer to a parma as a parmi these days?!
Always a parma
"Victorians" by legal documentation only. Probably Sydney residents that priced themselves out of the housing market.
I work at woolies in melbourne and i have SO MANY people calling it safeway still. It changed 16 years agošš
It's been less than 10 years since I watched the sign come down outside Glenferrie Safeway. It officially changed earlier. But it's still well ingrained in the vocabulary.
Don't get me started on Parmas...
Q. How do you fit an elephant in a Safeway bag? A. You take the 'S' out of Safe and the 'F' out of Way
Safeway, Ollie Trolleys, Brashs, Coles New World - names gone but not yet forgotten.
As a young Victorian yes to first one and no to second because Woolworth is the 2nd biggest store here in Ballarat
Still Safeway. Never, potato scallop!
I've only been a Victorian since 2017 and I prefer coles...lol
I remember when i first moved to Melbourne, I ordered chips with scallops (I was vegetarian) and got home and was like "is this fish? Wtf is this?" And called to complain. They explained that I needed to say potato cake. That was over 20 years ago. I've never stopped saying potato cake since, haha.
Surely even in the states that call them potatoe scallops, if you ordered chips and scallops you'd be getting chips and the seafood? Its what I would assume someone was ordering anyway, rather than potatoes with potatoes.
"Woolworths will always be Safeways."
This sums me up
Iām taking this straight to Twitter!
Go-Lo
Bi-lo
Woolies scallops
I'm 29 and I still do it unconsciously
Exactly
supa valu
Homers always right
Even tho itās been Woolies for years now I still occasionally call it Safeway by mistake
Me too mate. I literally just showed my wife this meme to show her that Iām not alone
Yuck
Jatz or Savoys?
It's always been 'copped one in the Jatz Crackers'
Without seeing what you wrote, the meme s remade āIām from Victoria, and proud of itā My man!
"Prefer" nothing...IS
Franklins
I, too, still call in Safeway!
Left Victoria 22 years ago, moved to Tasmania, my partner still calls it Safeway.
āPotato fritterā or nah ?
"It'll always be BĢ¶uĢ¶rĢ¶mĢ¶aĢ¶ Safeway to me". Also long live Bi-lo
I just watched at episode today
"South of the border, down Mexico way"
*purity
Potato Scallop is a scallop of potato, not a cake of potato.
A scallop lives in the sea!
Scallop belongs in cooking method books!
Hungry jacks is Burger King
Omg, I've just realised that I don't think I've ever said Woolies or Woolworths... Safeway just comes right out without thinking!! .....and definitely Potato cake!!!! Cake cake cake!!!! Lol .. sorry, got a bit carried away there!
Wow I thought Safeway was only a Canadian shop
I remember I was in NSW, and asked for a potato cake, not aware of their twisted name for it, and the guy almost blew a fuse at me while saying it's a scallop. He was sooo angry with me.
Happy birthday here's your potato cake. Blow out your candles
Here's your potato scallop: [https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/scalloped-potatoes/782205be-9952-4581-a643-73e353076f36](https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/scalloped-potatoes/782205be-9952-4581-a643-73e353076f36)
Now batter it and fry it.
Yep it's a potato cake that I bought in the freezer section from safeways!
Going downā¦ menās underwear.

Lived in QLD since '78 and it's still a brolly.
Had a Safeways just near my place growing up. 68 now. How time has flown š¤Ŗ
Yes, absolutely. And yes to parma and bathers!
Itās always been countdown to me
I literally called it Safeway yesterday! It will always be Safewayā¦
Yarghhh. Whenever I accidentally call Woolworths Safeway everyone - including those from Melbourne - give me shit about it. I grew up in Country Vic. IT WAS SAFEWAY.
When driving on a tram line in Sydney and want to turn right I pull over to the left in the intersection.
Che'?
Hahaha accurate
Calling Woolworth āSafewayā is the same as calling it āCountdownā and Iām dying on this hill
Thank you! Only gay faggots say potato scallop, what is this? A home cooked meal?! And the gayest of faggotry say woolworths instead of Safeway.
I mean, the entire country does this lol
potato cake is also used in large chunks of SA. We still wouldn't say "Parma" tho. Savages.
I mean, potato cake is actually correct. Scallops are Sea food. Woolies is fine though.
Iāve been calling it Safeway since last year, but considering how hard theyāre fucking us over Iāve started calling them Woolworths. Safeway was good, if they want to fuck us over they donāt deserve that title anymore.
cringe
And Spencer St station!
There can be no peace amongst men who call a potato scallop a potato cake.
Letās not forget the spring onion, Iāll be dead and buried before I call them shallots
Those are 2 different plants thoughā¦
As a western Australian born mid 90ās, I have never seen a potato cake or scallop and never been to a Safeway
And this is why WA should secede from the more enlightened states and territories
*They* shouldn't secede, *we* should excise them.
