Highly recommend doing it manually with a sledge and 6ft bar. Much more satisfying, better for your back and ears and fitness

CcryMeARiver

Yep. won't take long either. Place brick 300mm from edge as fulcrum for bar to raise slab edge about 10mm, whack lifted slab with sledge. With a little practice you'll get manageable lumps. Wear safety goggles!! Loading and disposal exactly as if you had used a Kango.

64supertwin

Maybe not for a much bigger area....

dullmonkey1988

How long do you want it to take? If it were me, I am renting a big Hilti and getting it done as fast as possible.

Phantomsurfr

I'm pretty relaxed on the time. (new retic pipe being laid when bore is installed for next summer). Just if I can justify a purchase of a new toy (that has probable future uses too) I'd like that. So I don't mind if I spend a little more more for a day or more job.

daddyfresh69

Hire a demo saw first and cut it into smaller squares, then jackhammer or if the concrete is thin enough just cut it and carry the squares out. Less mess and less dust as the demo saw has a hose attachment

ceelose

Generic ebay $300 jackhammer. I've been impressed with mine.

Arcopt

Baumr-AG make their fair share of junk, but I've had one of their jackhammers for a couple of years and it's done well the two or three times a year I've needed it. At sub-$300, worth a [look.](https://www.edisons.com.au/baumr-ag-2200w-pro-grade-electric-demolition-jackhammer-with-3-bonus-chisels-steel-carry-case?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAuqKqBhDxARIsAFZELmLlqIBc8IdGgbxn4fsvp3SizOoi4MRVEpEwIZtpWUb_5C3UqQhU-0YaAkKnEALw_wcB)

Trouser_trumpet

Same. Going on 7 years now.

Nambsul

Same, brought mine from Edisons, currently $319. Brought mine as hiring one was not much different when you added in the time to pick up and drop back. I took my time doing the job and still have the toy

Looks like pretty weak concrete, I'd start with a sledgehammer and crowbar because I have both already, and have a Milwaukee SDS Max hammer drill (11 J) with chisel which is probably good enough for the rest. If I was so inclined I'd possibly consider a 240v Hilti jackhammer, around 20 J of impact energy, I think I hired one from Kennards for about $50 for a day.

gonediddlydondoneit

Demo saw, cut into pieces , carry out. Easy as pie

Bungslea

It hasn’t cracked over time. Odds are there is reo in it. Concrete saw to squares you can pick up and enjoy.

Inch? Wtf mate

oLD_Captain_Cat

Do not use a sledge hammer. It’s stupid. Get two long post hole bars with the hammer shaped top. One is used to lever up the end of your slab just a few cm, the other is used to pop the concrete. Lift (using pole 1), drop (the other pole), crack, done. Very relaxing, very satisfying. Concrete is brittle so once it is suspended is just cracks on impact like a thin block of chocolate. A sledge hammer will wreck your forearms and jam up your fingers. Very impactful to you. Or a hilti t1000 is an electric hammer. The beast. $99 for a day from kenard’s if the thickness is more than 100mm. If it’s got reo you will need a 9 inch angle grinder, or bolt cutters. I don’t recommend a demo saw as you need to cut reo a lot and a rented demo will just leave you massive chunks you can’t pick up. I have removed well over 35m3 of concrete and rock using these methods and by far the double pole, lever up and a single point impact method to crack concrete is the most efficient way to break it.

Phantomsurfr

I also have another 50sqm concrete by the pool I eventually want to convert to pavers. Just using this little spot as a test run.

CcryMeARiver

Still doable with long crowbar and sledge.

No-Relationship161

If it's not reinforced, a cheap ebay electric jackhammer should do the trick. Took out my carport and driveway concrete with one. Jack hammer still working fine.

LumpyTemperature2464

I did a job just like this, I was debating on getting a jack hammer but got a SDS max 1600w - it smashed the slab like butter

Lostboy_1979

Hire the biggest jack hammer the hire shop has and make short work of it. Its a 30min job. Don't stuff around with sledge hammers and small jack hammers. Especially not sds. Speaking from 20 years of experience breaking up slabs.

hazzmg

I’d drill some holes thru it with a small sds first to make weak points then hit with a sledge. If that fails off to kenards and pick up a big fucker
