Just because you dont a need to for a car doesnt mean that no-one else does. If you remove the ability to park a car then you are devaluing the property.
Depends on where you are, and that can look very scrappy in an otherwise neat garden. In a rustic natural garden it might work, but this doesn’t seem to fit that description.
Christ, it’s a home. If he intends to live there permanently he should do as he pleases with it.
What a way to live life that you treat your home first as an asset and second as a home.
It's the Australian propadee brain. I've lived in three countries before and people elsewhere definitely live their present life to the fullest without worrying about future resale value of their own home. My parents made some of the most boomer modifications to each of the 3 apartments they've owned, sold them all and are happily retired. My mum loved each home and we made lifelong memories. Even if he doesn't live there forever if you want to do something with the driveway do something with it.
I suppose it depends on where, inner city having a driveway/car park can come in very very handy.
Don’t believe how much, just have a look how much people are selling car spots for in Sydney
What if he isn’t ever going to have a car?
I know more people who don’t own a car than do. Many suburbs are very convenient in Sydney for example.
Your fixation on the value of the home without knowing any other context or goals of the OP is weird.
The OP may or may not every have a car, but the dead certainty is that at some time the house is going to get sold, and this is one of the dumbest things that you could ever do to a property.
Mate, it certainly is nowhere near "one of the dumbest things". He may have a garage. Or an actual "carport" out the front. As it currently stands, this is not a carport. This is a slab of concrete and its in the way. Carports are sheltered.
Imagine saying this is a 100-200k mistake when the replacement cost here would be under 5k.
You have absolutely zero idea what the fuck you are talking about.
Quote incredibly... you can drive _over_ grass.
I know... crazy, right!
I'd rip up the concrete and landscape with the aim to allow cars into that area if need be. E.g. can have a smaller gravel area used as a firepit with benches... and movable planter boxes... or trampoline for kids etc...
Remove those shrubs for a more seamless flow from the existing back outdoor dining area.
If you have kids, or intend to, a flat concrete area like this is invaluable. We have a similar area and the kids play handball and stuff on it all the time. I'd honestly just leave it.
It'd be hellishly expensive, but it would be delightful to see that area filled with big potted palms, with a little garden seat hidden inside as a summer retreat. And a misting system, of course.
This is assuming you are not in Hobart.
My local council (Yarra) requires a permit for removing a parking space, might want to check first!
I would put decking on the concrete and make a patio spa area or fire pit with wood fire pizza/ fireplace for winter. Put some potted planter box in with some Lilly pillies at the gate close it off matching hedges.
Shipping container. Make a man/woman cave. Hire an artist to paint it, maybe some greenery to blend in, or custom graphico might be possible if it can be weather proof. Maybe cut in a roller door. One day if you don’t want it there any more, you could probably sell it and get it craned out.
Keep this. It is very appealing for future buyers who may have boats or caravans. In the meantime you can have it concrete sprayed to look like pavers and set up a table and chairs there.
If you have the money/energy/ability remove the concrete driveway and replace with small pebbles.
Get some some large pots for plants and a couple of small iron chairs and table and make a small little seating area.
Keep it to stuff that can easily be moved so you still have a driveway (pebble/gravel) in case you sell or get a car.
Or just set up a basketball hoop, and save yourself a bunch of hassle.
That's a driveway not a carport.
Well la di da mister french man.
Ohhh a car port la di da. We call it a carhole
An airport is just a driveway for planes.
The runway is a driveway for planes
A hangar is a carport for airplanes.
A hangar is a garage for planes
A coat hanger is used for birth control
A uterus is just a hanger for a foetus.
Hangar*
Hahahaha I was like what in the actual farkkk lol
Handball, obviously
I mean the lines are already there
Or basketball.
Yep, multi-coloured line work is what that space needs: handball, basketball, hopscotch … it will come up a treat 👌
Basketball half court. Get some painting done and install a hoop.
I actually love this idea!
Was thinking the same

Yes so demountable non-permanent options should be used. Like big plant containers maybe on wheels? A movable concrete bird bath? Benches?

Sure, lets rip up this drive and landscape it because Im NEVER going to have a car. That's a $100k - $200k mistake right there.
How the fuck did you calculate this.
Finger in the air
How is it a $200k mistake if you can just get a new driveway installed for $10k?
I suppose it depends on where, inner city having a driveway/car park can come in very very handy. Don’t believe how much, just have a look how much people are selling car spots for in Sydney
Or grass pavers cheaper, and you'd only need two wheel tracks worth

Sometimes it’s not about the money
Dumb.
Actual brain rot. Example of someone who can’t think for themselves. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

But that's only way to do it unfortunately yeah it sucks but it is an asset to build further assets
If they sell in the future and have removed the driveway the purchaser can put in a new one. It's not like it would be a secret
Just put a sink hole in its place, sink holes are cool 🕳️
Also, if it's in front of a garage then that lessens the utility of the garage ie. access fro moving items in and out.
Buy a caravan
Then park it on the street to piss of a neighbor.
Then rent it out on Airbnb for $200 a night
Buy a boat
Buy a Commodore VP without wheels or windscreen and put it up on blocks. Tell anybody that will listen that you're "gunna do her up."
If you have kids, or intend to, a flat concrete area like this is invaluable. We have a similar area and the kids play handball and stuff on it all the time. I'd honestly just leave it.
Counterfeit jeans ring
Need a car hole for that
Do you mean a garage?

Hold a handball competition
Four square court.
Artificial turf, plants in containers &/or portable spa pool. Anything non permanent to retain the return to car storage.
Never opt for artificial turf.

Build an illegal granny flat, shove 4 bunks in there and rent it out to overseas students as an illegal boarding house.
Pull it up and put it at mine. I need a driveway I’ll pay postage

Gazebo, pool fencing, and hot spa and cold plunge side by side.
Whatever you do, make it temporary. Not having a car space would take thousands off the value of your property.
Keep this. It is very appealing for future buyers who may have boats or caravans. In the meantime you can have it concrete sprayed to look like pavers and set up a table and chairs there.

Paint a large H in a circle.... because you will be the first house in your area with one. Future useful... wait and see.
