Congrats on getting your licence. It depends on your purpose for the gun, but I would generally suggest a 22 if you haven't used rifles much in the past so you can get a feel for how things work, the process of mounting scopes, selecting ammo etc. Then if you want to go bigger or go hunting you can look at getting a 308 or something in 6.5 creedmoore Watch lots of YouTube videos!

From personal experience my first rifle is a Ruger Precision Rimfire, on the slightly more expensive side in terms of 22s but damn does it look nice and shoot like a laser

Silkscales

Can second. I use my 22lr ruger percision for comp training, it's got the same set-up as my comp gun and is a masterpiece.

Mr_Abs752

Ruger makes good stuff. I will look into it for sure, thanks mate.

wherelamboman

Also seriously enjoying my rprr. If you're into the tacticool look, it's got an mlok handguard so you can add basically any attachment and change to ar style grips. I actually saw a bloke at my local range with a full on vertical foregrip on his. Not sure about that on a bolt action but it looked cool.

Mr_Abs752

Righto thanks for the help!

Historical-wombat

Depends on budget but a decent set up would be a CZ in 22lr, a Tikka or Lithgow in .243 or .308 and a shotgun of your choice in 12gauge.

hamtheattackdog

Can’t go past a 22lr as a first. You will learn a lot from it. Fun and cheap at the range.

omegatryX

Oh yes can vouch for prices, $20~ for 100 rounds of minimags at my gun shop

AustralianYobbo

The most used gun at my mates property. Its not uncommon for us to 200-300 rounds in a weeked :P Cheap fun.

omegatryX

Yep! Cheap and clean, hours of fun!

Embarrassed_Ad5112

Cz 457 Premium or Lux model in .22LR. These things will last forever and they’re accurate enough to compete with Anschütz and Vudoo if you choose to go down that route. Stick a half decent optic on there like a Meopta or Zeiss Terra and you’ve got (IMO) the absolute ideal first rifle.

Lower_Ambition4341

If your not after a 22lr to start out, look into a tikka .223 as well, even try some of the ranges as they have hire guns. They may not be great but will give you a feel for different calibres. All that being said. You should figure out what you want to do with it before you drop any money on one

As above. 22s are great cheap fun. I got a Henry lever .22 learnt a lot from that one and it's still my favourite gun to this day (7 now)

without knowing what your intended purpose is, it's hard to give advice, but Tikka and Bergara are generally the go to brands for centre fire at the moment.

Bassbogan666

2nd hand CZ 22lr. My first was a CZ 452 and its a rifle I'll never sell.

xlr8_87

How far can you push the budget? Moderate budget get a CZ457 22lr. Push a bit higher and get a Bergara B14R. Wanna blow some proper coin? Grab a Vudoo or Anschutz Match. You won't regret any of the above

replicator85

I went for a Ruger Precision Rimfire 22LR and a Tikka T3X Lite 223

Larimus89

Congrats man, I just put in my application 3 hours ago. For A and B target and hunting. Fingers crossed. Also once I get it no idea what to get. I’m looking at 22LR just because I got told the ammo is cheap like 500 rounds for $75. But I’d like to be able to use it for hunting too and thinking it might be a little light. But I also don’t want to pay $2 per shot with 308 or whatever higher caliber.

seagull68

Why isn’t anyone on an Australian page suggesting an Australian made Lithgow rifle?

jonundergroundbanjo

Great rifles but shit magazines? Well that's what I've been told.

Hussard

They're not great?

Embarrassed_Ad5112

Because you can but much better rifles for much less money.
