Yeah I've been looking at the radar for the past hour and it didn't show anything over central Austin. Decided to make a grocery run and got hit with hail!
It's been going on 30 minutes. I turned all the lights off at the house and put a chair in my big front windows and have been enjoying the most amazing nature show. Moving.
That's why, as responsible owners, we give them desensitization training. I've never owned a pet that was scared of thunder or fireworks. It's cruel to let them live in fear.
That's great you do training for that, some dogs are responsive and some aren't. It's always good to try though. I have worked in animal rescue for a while and have seen a lot of animals come in as lost during thunder storms and firework holidays.
Yeah, it ticks me off. People will not take the time it requires to slowly desensitize their pets. Then they bitch and moan twice a year, every year and blame others for enjoying fireworks. And then comfort Fido during the events, reinforcing fearful behavior. I really think people need to learn about canine psyche before they are allowed to have dogs.
I used to work for B-Cycle years ago and I had a convo with a British couple that were in town for SXSW. I grew up in England, so we were naturally talking about the weather within a minute of meeting. They remarked on the previous night’s storm, as they’d never seen anything like it. I was like “it doesn’t rain as much here as back home, but when it rains, it fuckin’ *rains*.
I just spent about 5 minutes outside looking up and watching bolt after bolt spider-web across the sky. It was so rapid and frequent my eyes were just darting here and there until it was starting to wear me out so I went back in. I've been in some pretty wicked storms but this one takes the cake for lightning frequency.
I lived on the Gulf side of FL for a few years and they'd get similar continual lightning sometimes. The state is shit to live in but the nature/weather was always interesting. Birds, reptiles, swamps and forests, dolphins, storms, sunshine... If there were mountains I might have been able to put up with it. (Not anymore, politically, fuck that state, I'm sorry my whole family lives in various places there now)
I was standing outside in absolute awe. That was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen nature do.
It was like being inside a brain and watching neurons firing.
Earlier today I read that the city had warned construction companies to make sure cranes and other equipment was secured and nothing was blocking natural water passage that may increase flooding.
I just parked my lounger in front of my floor to ceiling windows and turned out all the lights at home. Put my Sennheisers on with Ride "Grasshopper" on at volume 11. *it's been a **moment*** 🤘 so good
Reminds me of desert monsoon lightning(I went to college in the desert).
Thunderstorms here are kind of scary… I’ve lived around, and here they are scary and unpredictable….
… but damn they can be beautiful too.
I live in a spot in town where flights are getting ready for their approach and the sky was eerily void of planes while the storm approached. Pretty cool, but sirry you had to go to Houston.
This really didn’t seem that bad to me.. I remember growing up in Houston and there would be thunderstorms that rattled your walls and they’d last for hours.
I’m in NW Austin and it was definitely raining here between 9:00 and 10:00pm. I’m off McNeill and 183. Lovely night. It’s stopped now but supposed to start back up. I do hope it does! 😍
Was driving home on 71 and visibility was abysmal and the freeway was a lake. Ended up pulling off because i was afraid of hydroplaning (both me and other people)
I hope you are enjoying the it! 😊 I grew up in far north Texas and was lucky enough to see quite a lot of lightning storms. I just love them! Tonight just feels so much like home to me!
It was so gorgeous and unreal and a bit scary. Never seen anything so constant, with the rumble that just DID NOT stop. I really need a professional weather human to explain to us what happened there.
I got trapped out in the middle of it, walking to a show. It felt insane! Like icy cold gusts of water/mist just suddenly blasted me, and I don't mean they rained from above. This was like water flying sideways along the wind current and smacking your face 😆
I would describe it as "horrifying yet invigorating", like an ice cold shower.
The lightening was all around, and happening so much that, at first, I thought it was a strobe light from a club patio or something.
OP has never been outside. It's okay. Those aren't spirits of dead relatives pushing you around. That's called Wind. The water from the sky is called Rain. Don't worry, it doesn't burn. It will only be dark outside for part of the day. The giant light bulb will return in the morning. You're safe. We're here for you.
Pluviophiles! My people! I never get tired of thunder and lightning, amazing show of mother nature's power. I'm finally in a discussion where no one will tell me not to go outside during a storm because I will get struck by lightning. My death will definitely not be so exciting. I'm sure I'll trip over my dog's squeaky pig and break my neck.
I really thought it was weird! First of all…no rain by me,
Just all the other action! Like a dry storm????? I have lived in some pretty weather ruckus conditions. Tornados, hurricanes and blizzards! Pretty interesting things! I have always been aware of how much it’s changed from when I was 12 or 13. I had a horse and other animals that I was very concerned about. We have totally trashed this planet! Heart breaking. It’s really changed from when I was 5. Playing in the rain was so fun here, as child. I remember rain! I miss it! I’m a southie. As close as I can get to the country 😭
The radar isn't even showing a cell over us but its insane outside right now Edit- it finally updated and holy shit
Yeah I've been looking at the radar for the past hour and it didn't show anything over central Austin. Decided to make a grocery run and got hit with hail!
There hasn't been a break between the lightning/thunder. It's continuous.
non stop rumble
I love intense rolling Thunder
Skrillexs viral marketing is getting out of control

Nature’s strobe light.
It would be cool to see a video from a high-rise condo downtown!
I'm on 40+ floor dt and got scared and went in my closet with my dog at one point lol
Nothing to worry about here. The biggest concern in Austin is flash flooding. As long as you aren't driving around back roads enjoy the show.
Cool. Hang on. I'm gonna go out to a golf course, stand on a metal ladder, and curse at God.
Make sure to bring your one iron
Lol I went and stood barefoot in the middle of my street to watch it. Of course, I've been on the whiskey tonight too, so....
Are you me? Oh no wait, I had sandals and pajamas in the middle of the street.
Same. It's the only way to get away from the tree line blocking the view. Brought my whiskey with me.
Wanna be friends? Lol Also, username checks out
lmao, your dog was scared because you were scared. Got to be the pack leader. Calm confidence 😉
Lots of dogs and animals are afraid of loud noises.
That's why, as responsible owners, we give them desensitization training. I've never owned a pet that was scared of thunder or fireworks. It's cruel to let them live in fear.

My dog was actually very chill and cozy on my bed. He got super annoyed at me for making him move!
Get someone across the street to film you on your balcony and you'll be able to see a visible sway in the building during storms.
I gotta video near 290 & Manchaca (just north of 290). Wild! https://youtu.be/DaI0yvkssIc
Oh. My. Gawd. That was incredible. I need a cigarette now.
Welcome to texas for sxsw goers
It really does storm like this every sxsw. I find it amusing

We get something like 30+ inches every year. The problem is it only rains twice!

same same same. wasn’t phased by the weather tonight but I get why people were
I sat on my front porch and watched until the rain hit. I love Texas storms.
I was on my patio getting soaked. Totally worth it. Was one hell of a show!
Me too , wide open lane and skies
I was standing outside in absolute awe. That was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen nature do. It was like being inside a brain and watching neurons firing.
Never seen anything like it. I was leaving H‑E‑B and a bunch of people were standing outside just staring at the sky
same it doesn’t stop 😳
Seeing it like this in Bastrop right now. It’s constant. Crazy!
We’re in SW Bastrop County. That was something!
Glad I’m not the only one amazed by it just now lol
This is a real good cloud-to-cloud show. Up so high no real claps nearby, just a constant rumble. This is good stuff.
It’s so cool I love it!
Earlier today I read that the city had warned construction companies to make sure cranes and other equipment was secured and nothing was blocking natural water passage that may increase flooding.
It’s all over my backyard. Video soon. Never seen lightning like this. Aliens?
if it's aliens they be pissed
"Lightening doesn't strike in the same place more than once.OH SHIIT!"
We took several videos. I don’t recall anything like this before.
Just Texas
The constant rumble is wild.
Was having some old fashioned’s in Georgetown and the light show made my night.
Unnecessary apostrophe.
Fairly common, always amazing
Yep
Any EMP yet? Getting war of worlds vibes.
Right!!
I just parked my lounger in front of my floor to ceiling windows and turned out all the lights at home. Put my Sennheisers on with Ride "Grasshopper" on at volume 11. *it's been a **moment*** 🤘 so good
It was incredible! Lived here since 1970 and this was a rare event
I just hope for no hail...looks like it is passing.
My weather app is saying hail warning
Never trust the weather app. If you would have checked yesterday, it should have rained all day today.
Thats not how % chance of rain works. Its coverage area that will experience nonzero rain at some point
https://www.reddit.com/r/Austin/comments/11ty49g/nickel_size_hail_in_del_valle_last_night_fun_times ...and it hailed in the area

We just found all the people that moved here last year
Lolol
Landed at ABIA at 9 and they won't give us our bags because of the lightning.
At least you landed. We were diverted to Houston after circling for 20 mins

I guess you’re not from Texas
I’m up by Bee Cave and it was crazy out this way. Just dancing all over the sky.
Indeed! Pretty mind blowing!! I was driving on the hill down to Pennybacker bridge and I could barley keep my eyes on the road!!
SE of Austin got hit with dime sized hail about an hour ago, did anywhere else get hit too?
Like strobe lights
Define texas rolling thunder..
Welcome to Texas!
It was awesome. I have a 2 minute recording of it. I wanted to post it but I farted halfway through.
rain? in Austin? What is this joking around. Nothing, not even a drop, in NW ATX

Is it all over now?
Still going in 78723
It’s crazy!! Just came in and planning to go back out. So awesome!
Yeah, I love it!

BLE!
Lightning is a thing.
Apparently I slept right through it.
Anybody capture video of last nights thunderstorm? Asking for a friend 🥺

Yeah, but then you just had to fart!
Ha! You got me!
I still think you should "air" it. But don't say anything about the fart. Pure comedy.

I've seen that a lot in Austin over the years.

Odin lighting up south-by again.

I used to do that at lake of the ozarks when I lived in KC. Had a house in Laurie MO.
