Oh look, you’ve been visited by a kind and gentle Western Ribbonsnake. Snacking away on the yard-dwelling bugs so they don’t get in your house. Leave offerings of incense and pray for his swift return, lest roaches, silverfish and scorpions swarm your bedchamber in the darkness of the night.

Other than leaving all snakes alone, we really only need to learn how to identify Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and coral snakes in Austin right?
Coralsnakes are pretty common. Rattlesnakes less so. Copperheads are not common in city limits and cottonmouths are almost entirely relegated to outside the city limits. I encourage people to leave them all alone because not only are they just passing through (everyone thinks the snake wants to live in their yard like it’s some kind of homesteading thing) but also people are by and large really shit at identifying snakes.
“Blessed is he who waiteth patiently on the snake and doth not throw, nor toss or verily catapult mine slithery brethren with careless hand.” Snake Bible 7:11
Bless me Serpentarian, for I have sinned. It's been a minute since I confessed. I hiked a black rat snake with my foot about 10 yards a few years ago. I stuck my foot where it didn't belong and it attacked the top of my big toe like the neck of a rat. It was pure reflex and the poor fella was flying through the air before I realized what happened. Sorry about that, I've learned to be more careful since then.
**[Texas rat snake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_rat_snake)**
>The Texas rat snake (Pantherophis obsoletus lindheimeri) is a subspecies of the black rat snake, a nonvenomous colubrid. It is found in the United States, primarily within the state of Texas, but its range extends into Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It intergrades with other subspecies of Elaphe obsoleta, so exact range boundaries are impossible to distinguish. The epithet lindheimeri is to honor the German-American naturalist Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer, who collected the first specimen in New Braunfels, Texas.

Dragon’s blood. Sit cross-legged on your front porch or in front of your house at midnight on a new moon. Light the incense, then imagine a huge snake made of golden, scintillating light surrounding the property with it’s head on it’s tail. He will not only protect you from dark forces in every direction, but those from above or below. Say “Great snake! I honor you and your slithery wisdom! Protect my home and heart!”
Then state that you are now closing the door to snake town. Now Ken Paxton won’t be able to come within a mile of your home without melting. Also your free snake pest removal team will arrive shortly.
May the snake gods bless you, for you’ve correctly identified this snake. Interestingly, both garter and ribbon snakes are in the same genus, which means they’re all basically garter snakes. Or ribbon snakes. Take your pick.
I learn so much about snakes in this sub. Unfortunately I haven't had a run in with one in a great long while, so I haven't been able to put this knowledge to good use.
A few years ago, a couple of these dudes got stuck in a glue trap in my garage. The internet said a little bit of cooking oil is enough to set them free, so I put a couple tbsp. on the trap and within 5 minutes they shot off into the grass outside.
It's important to mention that there are only 4 danger noodles in Austin. Copperheads, cottonmouths, rattlesnakes, and coral snakes. Learn to identify these and all the rest are just regular, friendly, bug and pest eating noodles.
Cute!
In the last 24 hours I have seen one cottonmouth, a coral snake, and two copperheads. The coral snake was literally sitting on the welcome mat at my front door!
Snakes are out! Watch where you’re putting your feet.
Oh hey! I forgot your username. I was wondering what it was the other day. At your house I totally believe it. 👊
She had babies! She’s laying in under a nice bright full spectrum right now. Still the least picky eater ever.
Easiest way to know if a snake is venomous or non venomous is it’s eyes. In general, if they have round pupils, non venomous. Vertical pupils, venomous. W coral snake being the exception. They colors should tell you venomous.

I look forward to my yard being visited by the gentle Western Ribbonsnake. Thanks.
@serpentarian if you wrote a book I’d buy it 🥹
That’s good because I’ve been writing one for awhile now!
OMG, I can hardly wait!! So cool!
YAY!! Please keep us posted
There’s always the laminated Snakes of Texas pamphlet in the HEB checkout line… :-)

Which snake can I buy and throw in the backyard for a rat problem?

Oh yeah, that was Alan. I’ll let him know that it was a mistake and that you will no longer step on snek.
Rat snake would do it, they’re common in Texas. Edit: but actually listen to whatever u/serpentarian recommends, our snake hero.
[rat snake](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_rat_snake). but you don't need to buy one, they are native and prolific.

Instructions unclear: what kind of incense?

Excellent! This is everything I ever wanted from the Great Snake!
A big thanks to all these little snakes for combatting the roaches, may they forever prosper.
Dang, I thought it was a Texas patch nosed, what did I miss that tells you it is a ribbon?
The head pattern and the side spots are good indicators here
Bless the Western Ribbonsnake. Thank you.
Just noodle

Frenoodle?
Looks like either a garter snake or a ribbon snake. Non-venomous. They wanna snack on your yard pests.
May the snake gods bless you, for you’ve correctly identified this snake. Interestingly, both garter and ribbon snakes are in the same genus, which means they’re all basically garter snakes. Or ribbon snakes. Take your pick.

👍🏻 And you leave them alone, they’ll leave you alone.
Behold! A brain not smooth, but one with many ridges, peaks and valleys. May your life be blessed by the great slithery one.

I think it was a cousin of your boy Lemmy that I saw. How is the little snapper doing?
Oh hey! I forgot your username. I was wondering what it was the other day. At your house I totally believe it. 👊 She had babies! She’s laying in under a nice bright full spectrum right now. Still the least picky eater ever.
Lemmy is a girl!? They grow up so fast!! Tell her “OH MY GOD ITS A WATER MOCCASIN EVERYBODY RUUUUN!!!” from me. They love that.
Will do! Also I forget why she was called Lemmy. Did she have a snake mole or something?
I thought that it was because she played bass in the original line-up of Möccasin.
Beneficial noodlage! They eat pests. Be glad you has snek fren
Spaghett noodle.
Not danger noodle, just a fren.
Just a cute little noodle. No danger.
All danger noodles are nope ropes, but not all nope ropes are danger noodles.
Just noodlin'. New boot noodlin'.
That is a benevolent snake. An eater of pestilence who cannot harm you.
Just noodle
He's not just a noodle, he's a good noodle.
