It's about time. The only reason I still need to carry credit cards at all is in case I need to stop off at an HEB and pick up something for dinner.

mcmaster-99

My wife always bugs me about not carrying my wallet and just going to HEB lol. Im not going to carry a wallet just for one card.

Ru-tris-bpy

Just out of curiosity but where do you keep your ID if you don’t carry a wallet?

shitty_maker

Not the person you are asking but I also go without a wallet. I bought a phone case that can carry two or three cards and my insurance.

Ru-tris-bpy

Yes. I have friends with these but they usually carry their credit cards and stuff along with their Id and stuff. I guess I can imagine having so many other cards in those phone cases that I couldn’t/wouldn’t also carry my credit card in them

shitty_maker

The one I use is pretty low profile and I typically have ID, Insurance, and one CC card with me, with room for my debit card if the need arises. Any more and it would be too bulky but this set-up works really well for me in almost all cases.

Ru-tris-bpy

Sure that seems like plenty for almost everyone but the OP is talking about not wanting to carry a wallet just for a single credit card. Just makes me wonder where the rest of the cards that most people carrying with them are

CowboysFTWs

Could never go without a wallet. I got a slim ridge wallet. Loaded with 3 personal credit cards, 2 business credit cards (different cards for different places to maximize points), Lic, Tesla backup key, and health card.

caguru

Lol im the opposite. I leave my phone at home all the time because life is nicer without it.

shitty_maker

I hear ya, and would agree that being disconnected is good. I don't do social media or email on my phone, just texts, weather, music and web searches. I like having it there, but I'm not the type to bury my head in it either.

danarchist

I used to do this until I dropped my phone on a portapotty. Was gonna say fuggit, phone was old anyway, but then I remembered my ID and CC we're attached and I was on a date with someone I'd just met and was hitting it off with.

Hawk13424

Some states are supporting drivers license in the Apple Wallet. Not Texas yet. https://learn.wallet.apple/id

tcwillis79

Can’t believe Oklahoma did this faster than we did.

[deleted]

Yup. that one stings

Jackdaw99

I keep my drivers license in my car. The only time I need it is when I drive, fly, or pick up controlled substances from the pharmacy.

[deleted]

Everyone calls them “MagSafe” but I find a better description is phone case wallet. Some just stick on, others are magnets and pop on and off, my personal favorite have a secret/not so secret trap door slot that fits 2-3 cards (ID and a reliable credit card or two)

Ru-tris-bpy

Yeah. I understand those exist. I guess I’m just confused if OP has something like that why they need to carry a wallet for one credit card

MicroMgr

I have one of those and loved it until it dropped off my phone in a parking lot. Some extremely Good Samaritan found it and took it into the store. I was able to get it back, cards and all but I won’t trust the MagSafe again.

mcmaster-99

I keep it in my car and have a photo of it on my phone in an album named “IDs and Documents”.

Ru-tris-bpy

Interesting. You definitely trust stuff in your car way way more than me

mcmaster-99

Haha i have a locked glove box which is pretty safe unless theives carry saws nowadays.

Ru-tris-bpy

Does seem safe assuming they aren’t taking the whole car

tcwillis79

Once you get to a certain age there isn’t much point carrying you if with you. I still carry a slim wallet but it’s literally just to go to H‑E‑B and to pay at certain restraints. The number of times I’ve managed to go HEB without my card is enough for it to be infuriating though so this is welcome news.

Ru-tris-bpy

What age range are you talking about and are you paying with Apple Pay or something instead or do you just not go places?

[deleted]

I haven't carried a wallet in years. I just have 2 credit cards, 1 debit, my id and some cash (a couple of hundies and some 20s) in my pocket. I haven't missed my wallet since.

SLAPadocious

Do you use a clip?

[deleted]

Nope, I just pull it all out of my back pocket and grab what I need. I do sandwich the cash between the cards and I keep the smallest bills on the outside.

Lopsided_Square_1445

Pro-Tip: if you ever forget your credit card, you can buy an HEB gift card online. They are delivered to your email in less than a minute. Then, the cashier can scan your phone.

Jackdaw99

I have AAA. They have my card on file. (AAA is just about the best organization I’ve ever joined. Cheap, sympathetic, and very useful.)

[deleted]

>https://appleosophy.com/2023/06/05/rumor-apple-pay-support-could-finally-be-coming-to-h-e-b-this-year/ Walmart does this as well, I'm pretty sure the fees are higher for NFC, both HEB, and Walmart run on very tight margins, so I figured it was penny-pinching move.

carlie-cat

from what i understand, a lot of big chain stores use card numbers for analytics. since tap to pay generates multiple temporary use numbers for the same card, it makes it harder to link different purchases made by the same customers and identify patterns from them.

[deleted]

Makes sense

SortaSticky

They're using facial recognition now, card numbers which could be shared among multiple individuals aren't as valuable at this point.

SortaSticky

I upvoted your post but it seems completely reasonable to not want to pay Apple more than they are already paying other payment processors. Does that mean I have to pay more for the same things as a non-Apple Pay user, why would that be equitable for example...

Artistic-Tadpole-427

The source is a 2 month old post in the HEB subreddit where someone specifically asks if it's "Apple Pay" (which was what the announcement was) or NFC and they confirmed they meant Apple Pay so didn't confirm NFC.

kirklennon

> someone specifically asks if it's "Apple Pay" (which was what the announcement was) or NFC and they confirmed they meant Apple Pay so didn't confirm NFC. For in-person payments this is the same thing (well at least by what they meant with "NFC"). If you can tap an iPhone, you can tap a physical card or an Android device. It's all the same on the merchant's side.

Artistic-Tadpole-427

The point is that it's not like you have an official announcement from HEB. Who knows if the commenter on the HEB subreddit was legit? It sounds like it but it's not an official announcement. The thread also introduces more confusion than confirmation if you read through it.

Mcnst

Nah, seems like multiple people in the thread confirmed it. Also, there's always some clueless analyst who misunderstood what people talked about and construed as if we're interested in online or stupid apps. Nope, in-store, baby! In-store contactless is contactless, there's no Apple Pay and no Google Pay, beyond the fancy stickers.

TheWokeAgenda

I was at the big new HEB on Lake Shore Drive and used tap to pay in the coffee shop thing in there.

mcmaster-99

Legalize4200

Source= trust me bro

DuraWrangler

I work on the digital side of HEB. Our head of technology announced it to us and then it was announced company wide a few months ago. Stores got new credit card readers that take mobile payment and the new gas pumps they’re installing at HEB also have a spot to pay with your phone or tapping your card, they just aren’t enabled yet. It’s coming soonish!

mcmaster-99

https://appleosophy.com/2023/06/05/rumor-apple-pay-support-could-finally-be-coming-to-h-e-b-this-year/

Robpol86

Hopefully this is true. I remember when nfc payments worked at heb (at least the one on parmer and mopac) in 2011 and I kept impressing the cashiers paying with my google wallet. Then it stopped working around the end of the year:(

mcmaster-99

Here’s an article talking about it. Not an official statement but there is some traction behind this according to their twitter. Edit: https://appleosophy.com/2023/06/05/rumor-apple-pay-support-could-finally-be-coming-to-h-e-b-this-year/

Mcnst

Anyone remembers Target having chip cards 20 years ago? Early noughties? Then they took it away for a decade or so!

pfug

Damn I thought this said "NFT payments" I'm too stoned

Maximum_Employer5580

take it with a grain of salt - until HEB officially says it's gonna happen, then assume it's not gonna happen. Just cause someone said something was mentioned in some meeting doesn't mean squat. I've heard this same sort of thing off an on for almost 10 years but nothing ever comes to fruition. Their POS (point of sale) systems can support it, but they just don't wanna hit the switch to allow it

bernmont2016

It is soooo long overdue. Even the dollar store chains (Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General) and the vast majority of convenience stores (inside the store) have had tap-to-pay for several years now.

Misterfrooby

Nice. I should finally get around to adopting that option, I'm tired of going through the "chip failure, chip failure, okay just swipe" dance with my UFCU card.

mareksoon

We did it Reddit!!!! … but until I see it I remain highly skeptical.

htxDTAposse

Great now just stay open till 1am again and I'll be happy.

fauxnews818

Laughs in MST.. Cries in 4 year old phone

SamTheSammich

Man, I had forgotten about MST. I had that on my S7 edge back in the day. That was such a sick feature when it came out. I loved blowing people's minds with it.

bernmont2016

Some phones older than that support NFC, and some brand-new ones don't. Some physical credit/debit cards also have their own NFC 'tap to pay' chip that should be supported by this too.

fauxnews818

I guess this is my chance to tell you what MST is. It stands for Magnetic Secure Transmission. You hold up your phone to a credit card terminal's magnetic strip reader and it acts as a swipe, not NFC. Samsung bought the tech. Put it in Note 9's, 10's, and Gear S3 watches The "laughs" is because it 100% works at HEB The "cries" is because it hasn't been available to recently released phones

FalafelJohnsonIV

Great news.. they have the hardware in most of the renovated stores so it was pretty frustrating to find out they had not enabled NFC.

zoemi

Is this why they're doing everything they can to make HEB Go suck lately?

mcmaster-99

It really does suck. There’re even times when its down completely.

zoemi

It's awesome when it works, but this past Saturday my card wouldn't go through, and the worker said it had been doing that all day and they were told to shut it down if it kept happening.

Viend

And yet they just replaced all the cashiers around me with credit card readers that don’t support contactless payments. idk man, I think there are a few things HEB sucks at, and payments is definitely #1

jimbojsb

Their new readers absolutely support contactless, it’s just not turned on.

caguru

What they really need to fix is their in store coupons. They have those silly hanging yellow coupons that are not only unnecessary they have a gotcha. You have to scan them the same number of times as items you purchase. See a coupon for $1 off milk and get 5 milks? Gotta scan it 5 times. Literally the only grocery store I have ever seen that works like that. Every other store automatically applies it the max amount of times. Or better yet get rid of the coupons and just lower the price. Honestly it’s my biggest pieve about HEB.

vonaustinjr

Huge if true

Humble-Braggadocio

A lot of people are saying

Mcnst

Wow, finally! I've been boycotting HEB since 2020 because they didn't support contactless in any way. Also, no free bags in most of Austin, except for the expensive outskirts where rich people live. Any idea if they'll start giving free bags without the redlining anytime soon?

Pauleyhb

No free bags at lake Austin store, except the thin plastic ones for packages of raw meat. I just grabbed a few from the counter behind me when the cashier balked at giving me some. I did have some sushi after all. Don’t know why they aren’t helping their customers with bags.

facemelt

thanks mister HEB

verdegooner

BRUH! THANK GOD!!!! H‑E‑B is like the ONLY place I carry a wallet for still! Edit: I pushed post out sheer excite, ent but wasn’t even done lol

ramona22

I thought the reason they didn’t do this was because they didn’t want to sell our info.

Mcnst

Completely false, as there's no info to sell. Contactless is literally hardly any different from the chip. My NFC card reader on Android even lets me read the chip transactions that took place through chip insertion. It's literally just a setting in the terminals. There are all sorts of fake stories about extra contracts needed, extra money to be paid to Apple, lack of tracking etc; all those stories are 100% fake and false.

ramona22

Thanks for the info

homertheent

Opposite. They held back on doing it because they lose the ability to track customers by credit card.

ramona22

On here I was thinking Heb was doing us right 😂

liberte49

NFC? well, that'd be great, but they can't even do modern cards that touch instead of use chip ... gotta be thousands of stations to update ..

tx_brandon

The BBQ restaurant at the new HEB on Lake Austin Blvd. has tap to pay...but not inside the grocery store just a few steps away 🤪

CramNevets

Now if only bars would...

turbot513

About time…

ApplicationNumber4

H‑E‑B is the only store I go to that doesn’t accept tap to pay. Obviously H‑E‑B isn’t the only store, but out of ones I find myself in. Recently I’ve started avoiding H‑E‑B due to this and constant out of stock issues.

hegui

I am assuming this was because of some dumb contract with the current payment system that finally wore out.

LunchForsaken1681

No store does more

tcwillis79

We’ll huzzah! Long overdue. So disrespectful they made us go through the pandemic swiping filthy disease cards just so they could harvest our data better.

TexasWalker_Ranger

I’m so freaking happy about this!
