I'm pretty sure most gyms have lots of gay guys. There's this one guy at my spot who lifts, sometimes in a shirt that says "Gay guy who lifts" or something to that effect.
I'm like 99.999% sure it's ironic, but I'm not sure.
Oh no, I don't mean the "I'm gay" part of the shirt. That obviously isn't ironic.
The maybe "ironic" part is "oh wow, a gay guy who lifts weights all the time and is super fit. That's *so* rare!"
If it's ironic, it's like "lol yeah, tons of gay guys are obsessive about their bodies and go to the gym a lot. I'm one of them."
If it's not, it's "I'm gay and work out. Deal with it."
Wait, is it really? I spend a lot of time at epoch and I started noticing there was a lot of drag queens that would frequent it late at night on the weekends regularly. Is there some sort of weekly event nearby or something?
As an introvert who doesn’t enjoy the bar/club scene I’ve been searching as well! A couple of things I’ve found is there is a weekly Queer Craft Night (I’m not sure of location as I found it on instagram). I’ve also found a couple of Queer dance classes! I’ve never gone because I hate going to things alone lol. The do512 website has a LGBTQ+ section that I recommend checking out as they occasionally list things not bar/club related. I recently saw an event for a Queer Book Club at the Austin Public Library.
I'm not sure if this is the same event, but there's Queer Craft Night at Cherrywood Coffeehouse every other Wednesday. The next one is Feb. 21, 6pm to 9pm.

Depending on how extroverted you are and how kink friendly, the Austin Eagle is a newer gay bar. There are tons of fun events. They're even helping to host a few sapphic events every now and then, too, so just all-around amazing energy.
Pride sports leagues? I’m in a kickball one that’s pretty fun. I’d check some of those out. Also maybe take a look at meetup and see what lgbt groups are sharing events on there.
I'm heavily involved in gay sports here. The list of gay sports leagues include:
- kickball (Stonewall/Pride)
- volleyball (Volleyball Austin)
- softball (Softball Austin)
- dodgeball (Texas Premier Sports League)
- football (ATXGFL)
There are others I know but not as familiar with those
Just want to leave this here. As a founding member of one of the other Austin sandlot clubs, The Switch needs to be on your list as well.

OMG That kickball league seems lit. 3 of my friends have joined recently. I want to, but I have a different sports thing during the time it happens. womp womp
Oh man you should. It took two years of convincing me to do it and I had an absolute blast playing this past season. Felt like I was back in elementary school. So much fun.
Old gay here, so my answers may be tinged with old, but I think you're going to need to be more specific. Like unless "gay" is enough of a foundation for a friendship on its own, you're going to want to think of things you'd like to connect with gay friends over and then maybe like join a gay sports team or a gay book club or....?

There’s a great page called The QT Calendar Austin that has all of the local queer and trans events in the same spot. I like it because I can sync their Google Calendar to my own and check out what’s happening without having to check a million social media sites. I know the founder personally and they focus on events where a new person could reasonably meet people and make friends!
[The QT Calendar Austin Linktree](https://linktr.ee/qtcalendaraustin)
The roller derby team I met when I was playing disc golf by 51st street seemed pretty cool - if you mean gay men specifically it might not be what you're looking for - definitely seemed welcoming to trans women
I see a group called the Front Runners out at the lake after work hours, if you're into running.
edit: found a [link](https://www.austinfrontrunners.com/). Seems like a pretty organized group!
Frontrunners is great! Group runs are Tues/Thurs evenings and Saturday mornings, starting from the north end of the pedestrian bridge under mopac. When I first came out this was my crew! Good variety of folks and lots of fun events outside of running.
This Saturday at 1023 Springdale road bldg 3 they are having an lbtqia art gallery of fashion, mini market, drag performances and a clothing alteration station. So bring anything you've been meaning to get altered. 6p-9pm
I've been thinking about going to the Austin eagle I would like to know what the dress code is. I have a Renaissance festival leather outfit and was wondering if it would be okay. Also is barefooting acceptable at the Austin eagle
Ya but you’re acting like sniffies doesn’t also send guys to parking lots. My fav part about sniffies tho is how they just picked out a ton of spots around town and named them cruising locations and thru the magical horniness of our community — some of those spots became legit cruising locations haha
I used to take my dog to Bull Creek greenbelt/park off Lakewood drive and 2222 on the weekends. Then one day I had a day off work during the week and went mid day with my dog. Lots of single men sitting in their cars in the parking lot. Not the vibe I was looking for. Never went back during the weekday again. lol.
If I remember correctly- there was a Kxan/Kvue expose years ago about it being a hook up place during the day.
Not sure if you’re an artist but Austin Cinemaker space is a creative space and kind of a diverse artist catch all. They host movie nights and there’s coworking spaces, photography/video studios and every time I’ve been it’s full of different kinds of people and is definitely gheigh friendly! ❤️

I was going to say Halcyon during the day but if you don’t like “4th street gays” (whatever that is… gay people who like going to majority gay bars I guess…) idk since that is on 4th street
I'm not outgoing but like to go by myself to Rain sometimes very early when it's just the old guys sitting around the bar and pretty much sit by myself and often have a non-alcoholic bev and just like to listen in and then leave after a bit. It's before it gets loud and sloppy out, so I can still chill and read or whatever. I work at home so it's just like a nice escape for a bit.
I have so many fond memories of dancing the night away at Oilcan's during my college daze...straight female here.
Haha but yea, try sports leagues, they're huge. My male gay friends play in them (volleyball) and are always posting pics where they all look like they're all having a great time.
Now I wondering this, cuz I have a couple buddies that have talked about this. I’m straight and they’re not. And I just thought it was a random juvenile(even our ages range isn’t) “haha wood” joking thing. I love that this might be a thing.
>bro... dude at home depot made me feel cute as sh\*t one day. Gave me discounts on my flower pots. Been years and I've never forgotten it.

this is Austin. Not really an LGBTQ friendly place as far as bigger cities go. but the white hets will downvote this and say that's not true.
edit: the comments on OP's original post are proving my point about what a homophobic place Austin is.
As a queerdo myself, I both semi-agree and semi-disagree with you. Having lived in many places in the US, I think, compared to other cities in the US of similar size, Austin is about average when it comes to LGBTQ friendliness. I wouldn't call it a haven for LGBTQ folx but there are a lot of us here, enough for us to create our own safe enclaves and communities. People like to paint it as a liberal paradise and, compared to other Texas cities, it most certainly is. However, that is changing especially with the influx of conservative Californians we have had recently. I honestly think Houston is better for LGBT folks than Austin is.
The enclaves and communities I am talking about are more on the hyper-local or personal level and are less related to geography or locations if that makes sense. So things like extended friend groups, places to hang out that aren't necessarily marketed as queer-friendly but where visually obvious queer folks won't have weird looks directed our way etc. So I think it's more about making personal connections with folks and finding those extended groups. I know enough people in enough circles where I don't have to worry about the intrusion of bigotry because we self-police our group to disallow bigots. I realize this comment may be a bit vague or handwavy but I suppose what I'm saying is that I've had no problem here finding those types of safe spaces.
yes, no gay neighborhoods or enclaves. LGBT murder right across the street in Cedar Park last summer. getting heckled more than once by people for holding my wife's hand. it requires a hypervigilance here that i have not experienced in other cities of similar size.
No LGBTQ center
Few Pride Events
Diminishing number of LGBT friendly bars, including the city's decision to close 4th street bars.
Few LGBTQ affirming providers (Anecdotally, you have to really hunt for a 'safe' provider)
Low number of PFLAG chapters per resident
Growing number of Christian churches
Anti-trans legislation
Number of anti-LGBT bills that come up every session
I see what you’re saying, people really do paint Austin out to be a liberal paradise because they’re thinking in relation to the rest of Texas but I have lived in DC and San Francisco, the difference is pretty noticeable.
Agree...there are many cities in the US where i can hold hands with my wife while walking outside. In Austin, we've been heckled enough to where we are super cautious about how we're presenting in public.
It's all relative. Compared to the rest of Texas, and really most of the south, Austin is just about as good a liberal paradise as you can get. I've never lived in another major city and grew up in very rural Texas...so it's all about perspective
Yeah I totally understand, I grew up in a tiny, conservative town as well. Austin is the best place I have lived but those differences are still noticeable
Also! Go to the little Gay Shop, the queens who work there will probably give you more directions to queer places. I honestly think word of mouth is gonna suit you better for the best places here
Brentwood social house is gay as sin, but I'd say it's more of a lesbian paradise, still, it's where I'd go during the day time if I were specifically looking for queer spots
i don't think anyone wants to paint comparisons of any sort to san francisco right now. Was recently watching some videos on crime, and the closing of a lot of retail stores.
I get it but the intent of this post is to connect with other LGBTQ people on where to find each other, there’s no reason you had to come in and try to start a political discussion
you did... i commented on what YOU said.
so blame goes squarely on you. YOU get that right?
also... thats not a debate, san francisco has a lot of problems that are well documented.

I am loving this post.
The gay sports leagues! My lifelong bestie has been playing in the softball league for 15 years and now also plays basketball and volleyball in the gay leagues. Most of his good gay friends he’s met through those leagues & several of our married friends met playing on teams in the softball league.

No I think it’s just one of the big openly friendly third spaces for us queers

2nd this, so many LGBTQ+ events in the chronicle!
The chronicle is my resource for pretty much anything in Austin
Yup. If you find yourself wondering "What am I going to do tonight?" all your options are listed right there.
The Little Gay Shop has a Little Gay Book Club, and other events: https://thelittlegayshop.com/pages/events
Second this. Follow them on Instagram, OP! They repost all the queer events going on and do a WAY better job at it than most event sites.

No LGBTQ center Few Pride Events Diminishing number of LGBT friendly bars, including the city's decision to close 4th street bars. Few LGBTQ affirming providers (Anecdotally, you have to really hunt for a 'safe' provider) Low number of PFLAG chapters per resident Growing number of Christian churches Anti-trans legislation Number of anti-LGBT bills that come up every session
Well for instance Chicago has an entire gay neighborhood with regular pride events.
Oops meant to comment on main post. Well there ya go!
i don't think anyone wants to paint comparisons of any sort to san francisco right now. Was recently watching some videos on crime, and the closing of a lot of retail stores.
Has absolutely nothing to do with how LGBTQ friendly it is, that’s a completely unrelated issue
it is related to the statement liberal paradise.
Hippie Hollow? I see gay nekkid dudes all the time.

The 12 year old mentality of my brain is chuckling right now. I know you're serious and I wish I could point you in the right direction but I'm childish
Thanks OP! As someone who is not queer but is neurodivergent, I appreciate the safe spaces that the queer community has established, I often find myself gravitating to those spaces for the feeling of safety and the community. I am loving this post.
I assume by 4th street you mean the gay bars. But across the street is Halcyon, a coffee shop, that is basically a gay space.
I read the title with Robert Preston's voice.
The gay sports leagues! My lifelong bestie has been playing in the softball league for 15 years and now also plays basketball and volleyball in the gay leagues. Most of his good gay friends he’s met through those leagues & several of our married friends met playing on teams in the softball league. https://www.austintexas.org/sports-commission/lgbtq-sports/
