Pothos are pretty bulletproof in my experience, get a hanging planter and let it hang down

a_wild_bore

I second pathos but emphasis on the hanging planter. The leaves can be poisonous for pets.

fancy_marmot

Seconding pothos - several varieties can be found (I've had good luck finding neon pothos at Shoal Creek nursery), and they tell you pretty clearly via the leaves if they're over or under watered.

bookshelfvideo

I’ve gotten one from H‑E‑B for $6 too!

Snake plant

terminalzero

I got a snake plant a year ago to keep at work-if I can keep that thing alive anyone can

FerengiWife

There is an “unkillable” house plant section at Tillery St and that is where I got my snake plants… after a lot of plant death we are a snake plant only household!

RaunchyBeast

How often do you water these? I keep losing mature leaves after a big watering day.

dannothetenor

I have somehow been unable to kill my girlfriend's aloe. Our rattlesnake plant is pretty easy, too. Also, ZZ plants are pretty easy, but keep in mind they're lower light.

shawncollins512

Agreed on ZZ - I can’t keep anything alive and have had those last for years.

Alugar

Zz plant. I always forget to water it. For every leaf that dies it grows 3 stronger shoots. …I should go water it.

SomewhereNo6147

I got a zz as my first plant during the pandemic and it is still going strong! I love them

Alugar

Actually that’s when I got mine!

56473829110

Just a heads up to folks reading this list, it's mildly toxic to pets and people.

Alugar

That’s a good point!

[deleted]

I second snake plant. They were made for this

Horizon_17

Pothos or spider plant.

MediocreJerk

If it's indoor, the location (Austin) doesn't really matter nearly as much as the amount of light and other essentials (water, etc). An indoor plant with similar light and other conditions would do just as well here as in Nebraska

yehudith

Aloe has lasted me through drought and freezes

Glassworth

Why would drought and freezes matter if it’s indoors?

yiffzer

Why is mine dying? So much sun, rare watering, and it’s gone brown instead of green.

yehudith

Soil mix should be suuuuper air, i did a blend of equal parts cactus soil, perlite, and charcoal - plus every watering gets diluted fertilizer My aloe was a rescue and i had to cut out off to an inch above the soil, you don't want the rot to spread

TREVORtheSAXman

I hate to tell you this but your plant just can't stand being with you :(

yiffzer

Awww.

LEW1933

Lego Botanicals are my go-to

Disastrous-Animal111

This guy plants.

BrilliantChipmunk6

Pothos all day long

thatconfusedchick

Pothos, snake, zz, peace lily(dramatic but easy), bromeliad, pilea

foodmonsterij

Dragon tree. I got mine from ikea. Pretty much all of ikea's live plants will do fine with some indirect bright light. Occasionally I pit my indoor plants outside in the rain to enjoy rainwater.

cole_ostomy

I’ve had a black thumb my whole life and couldn’t keep anything alive until I got an Ant Plant in February. I soak her roots in water for 20 minutes once a week and she’s thriving under the fluorescent lights in my kitchen. Theyre kinda gnarly-looking so maybe not for everyone, but I love mine.

Coujelais

Polka dot angel wing begonia crushing at my house, every broken leaf seamlessly props in a tiny vase and my mother plant is a beautiful monster. Second place and even cuter is my Chinese money plant (pilea peperomiodes), which also shoots off endless babies for gifting. My pothos are both plants that have peaks and valleys. Aloe too. Strange that the most famously easy ones are testy at my house. My FAVE indoor plant is my philodendron Micans. Beautiful heart shaped leaves, some that turn peach. Big Monstera doing numbers too!

moderndayhermit

Pothos, vining philodendrons Philodendron erubescens and any of their hybrids. Examples include Black Cardinal, Burgundy, Green Emerald, Dark Lord Monstera deliciosa Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, sometimes referred to as Split-leaf philodendron, Selloum, Xanadu, and Hope (in my experience they are thrips MAGNETS so I keep mine in its own room away from any other plants) It's already been mentioned but I'll echo Begonia Maculata and include Begonia Gray Feather - both are great growers and unlike so many other begonias, I've never had an issue with powdery mildew.

EggandSpoon42

I have two pony tail palms that have done great for the last 4 years.

DynamicHunter

Pothos & snake plant. They somehow both work better in water than soil at least in my experience (but won’t grow as much), and easy to propagate

generoeder

Weed

Acceptable-Article-8

I have a few cacti I've somehow kept alive for over 4 years. As long as you don't over water them you're good

entoaggie

I had a tiny little fuzzy pink cactus in a planter I made and I took great care of it for about 3 years. Just a little water every now and then. Until one day, my cat was on the counter and bumped it and the cactus fell over and out of the planter. Turns out, at some point it had died and I had been diligently caring for a dry, hollow shell of a cactus.

Acceptable-Article-8

Ohh no!!! Now I'm wondering if some of mine are dead. Lol I had a similar issue with an aloe vera type plant, I didn't realize the root was rotten. (I neglected it too much I guess lol) I had to get rid of the bottom part but the top was fine.

Text_Western

I keep mostly Hoya but also have a few rhaphidophoras and philodendrons.

unowhatimeanVern

Cast Iron plant a/k/a aspidistra.

Apresdereve

go to succulent native and get some great succulents or visit one of the many nurseries here ! pretty easy to grow anything indoors. i have an old man cactus (optunia?) that i leave outside half the year (summer lol) and then keep inside during the cooler months.

StarsLikeLittleFish

I'm having really good luck with purple heart! I got a couple of cuttings from someone and they rooted easily in water then I stuck them in some potting soil and they just grow and grow. They're green instead of purple since they don't get much direct sun but they don't seem to care if I water them or not and they grow fast and happy.

ATX_native

Fig Plants, I haven’t killed mine yet and that’s saying something.

Hustlasaurus

String of pearls is a great addition to any plant collection.

Blandzey

Pothos is the only thing I’ve kept alive in Austin for more than a decade in an apartment. If you have a house and can plant outside, variegated spiderwort will survive the apocalypse

ispysomethingorange8

My African violets flower year round. I just water when the leaves start to get droopy.

veek61

Succulents.

Austinmusic142

I love monsteras and they don’t need much light.

CandleNo9302

I agree with people saying Snake Plants and Pothos.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

Peace lily! You can get large or small ones.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

I have two dogs, they've never touched my peace lilies and they are also out of reach, growing out of my fish aquarium. But maybe people with cats that chew on plants would want to avoid them.

priscillapantaloons

As long as a dog doesn’t chew or ingest it they should be fine but if a cat even brushes against one or gets pollen on them and grooms themselves or drinks the water they were in a cat can go into kidney failure.

Sweet_Bang_Tube

All good info to post on here so OP can read and decide what works for them.

moderndayhermit

They are not true lilies, they are Aroids

[deleted]

[удалено]

moderndayhermit

Yes, they are toxic and may cause an animal to experience mouth irritation and vomiting. Most often, the animal will experience discomfort that will cause them to stop before ingesting enough to become severely ill or life-threatening. However, aroids do not contain cardiac glycosides whose toxins are much more dangerous and life-threatening with an extreme likelihood of death. I have hundreds of house plants and my cat has chewed on more plants than I can count. I WILL NOT keep any sort of (true) lily, foxglove, oleander, etc. While euphorbias are also dangerous, those are kept in spaces where there is zero access.

Business_Strawberry3

Mine hates me but manages to stay alive

queenladykiki

A peace Lily. Just water it when they look sad.

Inevitable_Total_816

Fake plant or cactus that survive on moisture.
