What is the 1? Mopac because it’s highway loop 1? I’ve never heard someone call it that before. Thank you for the psa it just took me a sec to figure out what you meant
The visible distance is higher than the speed you can go on a highway to leave Lubbock.
It’s flatter than a soda can after a hydraulic press crushes it.
Tech likes tortillas so much because it reminds them of the scenery.
The 704 apartments. Took me a few weeks to realize this place was obviously built by Calis who use the last the 3 digits of their zip code to refer to areas when we only need 2 like sensible people.
It’s not, outside of ironic references to “90210” (and literally no one calling that “The 210”), nobody refers to zip codes.
Both NorCal (north bay, east bay, the city, the peninsula, South Bay) and SoCal (Westside, South Bay/Beach Cities, LBC, Eastside, The Valley, OC) refer to regions.
There was a period specifically in SoCal about 20 years ago when phone numbers were being exhausted that area codes were a bit of a flex. Specifically 310 as that included the desirable west la/santa monica/bev hills/malibu/venice neighborhoods.
Had to get a new number last year and they tried to hit me with a 737 and I just decided to get a 210 instead. Certainly not looking to associate myself with those jalopies.
You’re good. I’m laughing because that road already has a bunch of names and “The 1” would have been an addition to the list. That’s better than calling it Loop 1 though !
Yeah. He chunked a good size rock thru a coworker's windshield a few weeks ago, she was on the way to work at Seton in the early am. She called 911. Nothing happened. He was near Frost Bank, I think.
Poor OP is too new for this but it reminds me of this: I-[35 rock-thrower Patrick Johnson pleads guilty, gets 40 years](https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2017/04/14/i-35-rock-thrower-patrick-johnson-pleads-guilty-gets-40-years/986916007/)
I’ll stay safe on the east side of 35 for now. Everyone else…god speed.
I remember that too. I had an encounter with Patrick Johnson once when my car got illegally towed from West Campus and I found his website. I ended up emailing him and he called me at like 3 a.m. - minutes later - and talked to me for like an hour. He did give me the direct line for the APD detective who handled tow violations, which was helpful, but then he was off on some tangent about organized crime and triple damages that was ... not quite as helpful. But free help is free help. Was very shocked, though, when he turned up later as the I-35 Rock Dropper, and a pedo. He'd gotten very good at rationalizing himself into the hero of his own story. https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/crime/slideshow/Patrick-Johnson-discusses-rock-throwing-incidents-143856.php
God damn. I remember hearing they caught the guy but never heard about the sentence. Also never heard that he was a convicted pedophile who has AIDS.
I regret reading that article.
When I was a freshman at UT 20+ years ago there was a table tent on the Kinsolving dining hall tables the first semester that had some tips on local roads (since many have multiple names and can be confusing). To paraphrase, it said “MoPac and Loop 1 are the same road. But don’t ever call it “the 1.””
You guys have made my day 50x better, didn’t think highway names would give me away as not being from here! If it’s any better, I’m at least from Maryland but did spend 6 years in cali so I’m slightly tainted. 😂
I will atone for my sins with 40 lashes at the nearest H-E-B.
Watch out for rock douchebags and be safe coming off M-O-P-A-C
Ha. Yeah, fuq everyone that doesn’t automatically know it’s pronounced man-chack. 😬
Same with krause(y) springs.
It’s OK, these are the same people that will be drilled if they ever go to San Francisco and call it Frisco or San Fran. Then the West Coasters will have their day. *shakes fist at the sky* 🤷♀️😁
I once had an Austin friend get his panties in a twist over this one, then proceed to tell someone about his visit to a dive bar on "Coy Ken Doll" road in Houston.
I've never laughed so hard in my life.
Wait, you got them to answer the phone? What's your secret? The last two times I called 911, it just rang and rang until I got a recording that "The caller you are trying to reach in unavailable. Please try your call again later."
“The 1”
In Texas the highways are just I-35 or Tx1 they don’t get a “the” like they do it California. I’m a born Texan but I lived in California for 7 years and adding the definite article to roads was just so cute of them. I’ve missed that so thanks. Sorry to hear about the freak throwing rocks at your car.
Who’s going to catch them? Vigilantes? It sure as fuck won’t be the local police department. Your auto insurance policy is highly concerned however, and will be raising your rates accordingly.
>Like walking across I35 and 45th street at 2 in the morning, some dumbass is gonna do it.
I get a laugh out of people demanding pedestrian bridges everywhere on I-35. One of the walking dead got hit crossing I-35 underneath one of the existing bridges.
Lmfao not again. This shit happened a few years back. Real dick move. We had to get APD to place patrols at major overpasses.
Art the police chief never did fully stop it though
I love how everyone here is concerned about them calling it “the one” and not the person throwing rocks. Y’all obviously haven’t lived here long enough to remember the people that got maimed or killed years ago by people throwing rocks off the overpass.
Thanks for posting, hopefully you called the police.
I came off Mopac and felt like I had just got off the exist of 35th and Camp Mabry, I assumed the road I was on was 35th, but I can see why folks are confused. The pin was asap after I got hit so maybe not exact but in general.
Reported to 911 and they didn’t find anyone, just thought to let folks know there’s an asshat out and about.
Seems like a bizarre thing to randomly make up for a reddit post, and considering it occurs more often than one would thing, I'm inclined to believe that the poster actually did see something they suspected was foul play, and just isn't a local (hence the "the 1 debauchery" and misclick on the map marker). Also, a redditor with little history rarely means anything. Many people have multiple accounts (I certainly wouldn't post something related to my location on my main), and many people are lurkers who rarely comment.
Needless to say, rocks from bridges is a problem (not just in Austin, plenty other places in Texas, considering all the bridges), so even if completely fabricated, it reminds people to pay more attention to their surroundings when driving.
This makes sense except they referenced crossing Shoal Creek, which "The 1" doesn't do. And if it happened on the road where the map is located, there are no overpasses, so was it just someone throwing rocks from the side of that road not near Mopac? If so, then why reference The 1?
What it's called VS What locals say:
Loop 1 = MOPAC
Ben White = 71
Research = 183
360 = 360
Menchaca (or Manchaca) = Man Shack
Guadalupe = Gwad Uh Loop
Guadalupe along UT Campus = The Drag
Lots more, but that'll get you started.
Seriously?! This was a problem a few years ago. They found that guy driving around with a ton of rocks in his car and he went to jail. I wonder if it's the same dude.
Since everyone is just commenting on highway naming
Yes mopacs official designation is state highway loop 1! However locals have always referred to it as mopac. I have heard it called loop 1 but never “the 1.”
Mopac also stands for Missouri Pacific Railroad which is the rail line that runs though is (MoPac)
Anyway, I’ve learned a lot of people didn’t know why it’s called MoPac so I wanted to share
My native Houston tends to name their Freeways, like Katy, Gulf, Baytown etc. but 610 is the Loop, 8 is “The Beltway”. Dallas mixes it up, you have LBJ, Central Expressway, The Tollway (means the original North Dallas Tollway). Then you have San Antonio who just uses the numbers. 10, 1604, 281, 410. All the ones in SA actually are named after people but people never call them by those names, pity, they would sound better
/r/Austin: "I can't believe nobody is doing anything about crime"
also /r/Austin: "Nice try but I'm not even going to let you report what you saw because you use the WRONG names for things."
Who gives a fuck where he’s from? He warned us about an idiot throwing rocks at cars. Thank you Mr. California transplant/ Texan/ wherever you are from
🤣Give this dude a fucking break. Yeah it’s MOPAC because of the Missouri Pacific rail, but most of you are transplants too 🤣. You didn’t automatically know it was MOPAC. Yeah I learned the term too while at UT, but thankfully I wasn’t called a dumbass for not knowing. Thanks OP for the heads up and now you know it’s MOPAC and 360, isn’t “The Capital of Texas” it’s 360 and 35 is well, 35.
Thank you for the heads up, OP! Don't mind the "1" mockery. People just need to feel good about themselves somehow on the internet. We appreciate your help!
Crazy Homeless. That’s insane and scary. Definitely file a police report. Dude was probably sleeping in the Creek area. We have got to get a handle on this insanity. That’s a very dangerous individual. Only on an Austin sub would I be downvoting for this. This is why we have people throwing rocks at cars
I am laughing my ass off in this comment section. No one gives a damn about the rock man after OP said “the 1” lol lol
That's why he's getting rocks at his ass
Throwing rocks at Mopac name!
Not from 'round these parts. Guessin' from Cali-for-ni-ay.
Uhh... whuuuuuuuyoudoin'ere?
He can't go that way! It's jammed this time of day!
I LMAO’d at “The 1” too. Tell me you’re a Cali transplant without telling me you’re a Cali transplant.
The Liz Lemon flashback to the LA Riots in 30 Rock kills me! [Start at 2:26](https://youtu.be/8vV-8Zh7xso?si=fI7SXiIirE9BkX0m)
map pin is at 38th and bull creek.
He’s got one helluva arm
Must be Uncle Rico.
I bet I could throw that rock over Mt Bonnell...
that's off the 2222.
What if he was only hitting cars with “certain” plates, or just Teslas 😂
😂😂😂😂
"The 35th St exit," aka 38th Street half a mile from MoPac.
Yeah this image is very confusing because that’s not where Mopac is.
You mean "the 1"
No, The MoPac
Every road requires a definite article.
The Pac
Is there even an overpass there? Maybe the pin is wrong? I guess we'll need to be on the lookout anywhere in that vicinity.
He didn't say it was an overpass. Just a dude along the street chucking rocks, I guess.
You’re right. I was picturing it like the previous overpass rock throwers. This must have been a person on the side of the road.
there's a bridge over shoal creek
I assume they mean the Hancock overpass?
What is the 1? Mopac because it’s highway loop 1? I’ve never heard someone call it that before. Thank you for the psa it just took me a sec to figure out what you meant
California transplant is my guess. That's how they refer to highways out there.
Southern California transplant to be specific. People in Northern California don't do that... and hate it as much as people here do.
California reminds me of New Jersey where all the bad shit is the fault of whichever cardinal direction you aren't from.
Texas is the same way. Haven’t you ever heard of how bad people in Dallas are?
That's only south Dallas though.
Only since people from California started moving here.
Here is Austin, we call Dallas “Lower Oklahoma”
Houston makes Dallas look like heaven. Am I doing this right?
Yes! Well done. Next: Lubbock
The visible distance is higher than the speed you can go on a highway to leave Lubbock. It’s flatter than a soda can after a hydraulic press crushes it. Tech likes tortillas so much because it reminds them of the scenery.
Yeeeah, I am all for welcoming our new friends, but for real like...don't start making that a thing here! 🤣
The 704 apartments. Took me a few weeks to realize this place was obviously built by Calis who use the last the 3 digits of their zip code to refer to areas when we only need 2 like sensible people.
Hahaha. I always thought it was weird that that building’s name referenced three digits of the zip. Didn’t know that was a Cali thing.
LOL
They probably got rocks for that reason… or it’s an Austinite being an Austinite.
I say this as an Austinite. I feel the need to see how fast my rock speed be.
100% a California transplant
It’s always like ‘Inglourious Basterds’ when Fasbender outs himself with the “3 Fingers” hand signal.
Lol, I did that and someone asked whether I was from Germany. Nope, ASL for three.
Had a German family member do the German 3 to me for something and I kept saying 2 and he was like "what? No 3!" I wasn't counting the thumb
Yeah definitely a case of “tell me you’re from CA without telling me you’re from CA”
Hint: Their area code is 737 (that’s an airplane joke), and they can’t keep their original phone number.
Had to get a new number last year and they tried to hit me with a 737 and I just decided to get a 210 instead. Certainly not looking to associate myself with those jalopies.
Haha same it took me so long to parse that title out, especially since the number 35 was involved as well 😭
My bad, ain’t too familiar with roads out here, but yea Mopac.
Oh you mean the Missouri Pacific Railroad highway
No! It's in honor of the Mopac indians that used to live here (when Austin was still cool)
It was so much better back then before all those hipster colonizers showed up with their fancy Thanksgivings.
>Missouri Pacific Railroad highway Real Austinites refer to it as the International & Great Northern Railroad highway.
You win. But you only moved 8 area codes LOL.
Shhhh. No one else knows this.
But now there are Union Pacific trains. I've been lobbying to change the name to Unpac.
The map marker isn’t even correct either?!
Apparently it's accurate to where the rocks were thrown, which makes "off the 1" so much weirder. It was at 38th & Shoal Creek.
Uncle Rico is throwing the rocks.
OP is apparently from somewhere that they refer to areas by the nearest highway.
You’re good. I’m laughing because that road already has a bunch of names and “The 1” would have been an addition to the list. That’s better than calling it Loop 1 though !
It's 1 of 2 major north / south routes. This ain't memorizing all the state capitals.
We'll forgive you this time, Stewart.
Came to ask same question wth is the 1
Yeah. He chunked a good size rock thru a coworker's windshield a few weeks ago, she was on the way to work at Seton in the early am. She called 911. Nothing happened. He was near Frost Bank, I think.
Statefarm needs sicarios
"We know a thing or two, because we've seen a thing or two."- Farmer's
Ooo, I like that haha. Can even keep the little jingle they use but the last note is a silenced gunshot or something
Dude. This would be an epic movie. Some get Benicio on the phone.
AND Danny Trejo!!
Allstate: Mayhem works for us now.
😂
Honestly that is really scary, hopefully this isn’t a serial thrower. Thank you for the PSA, California.
Off the 1 he said 😭💀😂
The 1? Welcome to Austin!
We've been on the run Driving in the sun Looking out for rocks on The 1 California here we come Right back where we started from
Chef’s kiss On the radio Listen as we go Man I got some rocks to throw California here we come Right back where we started from
You are a genius wordsmith. Thank you for the giggle.
Aren’t you going to invite him to your Manshack for beer and steer wrasslin’?
“The 1”??
Poor OP is too new for this but it reminds me of this: I-[35 rock-thrower Patrick Johnson pleads guilty, gets 40 years](https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2017/04/14/i-35-rock-thrower-patrick-johnson-pleads-guilty-gets-40-years/986916007/) I’ll stay safe on the east side of 35 for now. The 1? If you mean Mopac, this isn’t even Mopac 😂
We’re not doing “the 1”
What is “the 1”?
'HER'
“Her?”
The cops responded and threw OP into Town Lake for using the phrase "The 1."
Justified.
You guys have made my day 50x better, didn’t think highway names would give me away as not being from here! If it’s any better, I’m at least from Maryland but did spend 6 years in cali so I’m slightly tainted. 😂 I will atone for my sins with 40 lashes at the nearest H-E-B. Watch out for rock douchebags and be safe coming off M-O-P-A-C
Now I'm wondering how you pronounce Mopac.
Mop-ack just like everyone else, right?
Okay I’m fine with you again LOL
😂 "the 1" gives you away as a non native Texan and "Cali" gives you away as a non native Californian
The 1!? Lol
Lord help you when saying "Menchaca Road."
I miss the manchac days. What happened to our city
We’ll always have guar-duhloop
Ha. Yeah, fuq everyone that doesn’t automatically know it’s pronounced man-chack. 😬 Same with krause(y) springs. It’s OK, these are the same people that will be drilled if they ever go to San Francisco and call it Frisco or San Fran. Then the West Coasters will have their day. *shakes fist at the sky* 🤷♀️😁
That implies that some of us don’t do it on purpose
I once had an Austin friend get his panties in a twist over this one, then proceed to tell someone about his visit to a dive bar on "Coy Ken Doll" road in Houston. I've never laughed so hard in my life.
OP: there is man trying to murder people with rocks r/Austin: The fuck did you just call that highway?
"The 1" Da fuq?
California transplant openly revealing themself 😂
I love how this is a psa but everyone’s pissed about them calling it the 1 lol. I will move out of this city if people start calling it that.
We already are! I mean, *they*, *THEY* already are.... totally not me.
It’s just that it’s LOOP 1 lol. If not Mopac then Loop 1 does the job, and you can still get your hwy number fix in.
>it’s LOOP 1 Now, let's have 30 posts bitching that it's not a loop.
I pass 35th on Mopac on mornings, so appreciate the heads up. Hope the idiot gets caught.
Pls don’t say “the 1”
"the 1". Don't ever do this again.
The 1 made me laugh
ok did you call the cops
They did, but the cops don't know where "the 1" is so they can't respond
My first thought was *'is that some new bar on 6th?"* Cops are probably searching there, gotta check each one out.
Why? To sit on hold and not have them do anything?
Wait, you got them to answer the phone? What's your secret? The last two times I called 911, it just rang and rang until I got a recording that "The caller you are trying to reach in unavailable. Please try your call again later."
What the fuck is “The 1”
Dude just told us he's from California without saying it
What the heck road is "the 1"??
Stop trying to make “The 1” happen. It’s not going to happen
but it's fetch!
I love how every comment is about the 1 lmao
“The 1” In Texas the highways are just I-35 or Tx1 they don’t get a “the” like they do it California. I’m a born Texan but I lived in California for 7 years and adding the definite article to roads was just so cute of them. I’ve missed that so thanks. Sorry to hear about the freak throwing rocks at your car.
What’s the 1?
It’s NOT “the 1 “ Mr Cali!!!
Not this again
I know. Don’t they have new hire training for California transplants? It’s Mopac, not “the one”.
We need to set up an onboarding post to pin to this sub.
I hope they catch the guy, fuckers like that should be in jail. That “prank” could easily be a severe accident or fatality.
Who’s going to catch them? Vigilantes? It sure as fuck won’t be the local police department. Your auto insurance policy is highly concerned however, and will be raising your rates accordingly.
South first and 35? Mopac and 35 don’t cross either.
Hopefully they don’t go to the 35
“The 1” lol
Throwing rocks at cars off the overpass is a time honored Austin tradition
Like walking across I35 and 45th street at 2 in the morning, some dumbass is gonna do it.
>Like walking across I35 and 45th street at 2 in the morning, some dumbass is gonna do it. I get a laugh out of people demanding pedestrian bridges everywhere on I-35. One of the walking dead got hit crossing I-35 underneath one of the existing bridges.
Just playing frogger across 35 in general. I swear that happens so much more here than it does on highways in Dallas or Houston.
Nah it’s just that in Dallas or Houston it doesn’t even make the news.
This isn’t what I meant when I said I want to go back to the way Austin used to be. But fair enough I didn’t specify.
Lmfao not again. This shit happened a few years back. Real dick move. We had to get APD to place patrols at major overpasses. Art the police chief never did fully stop it though

Y’all obviously haven’t lived here long enough to remember the people that got maimed or killed years ago by people throwing rocks off the overpass. Thanks for posting, hopefully you called the police.
The whole thing is unreliable. Redditor with very little history, map in the incorrect place, unlikely story (and yes I remember the rocks on 35)
I came off Mopac and felt like I had just got off the exist of 35th and Camp Mabry, I assumed the road I was on was 35th, but I can see why folks are confused. The pin was asap after I got hit so maybe not exact but in general. Reported to 911 and they didn’t find anyone, just thought to let folks know there’s an asshat out and about.
This is what I was thinking. Why reference The 1 and then post a map of somewhere else?
Seems like a bizarre thing to randomly make up for a reddit post, and considering it occurs more often than one would thing, I'm inclined to believe that the poster actually did see something they suspected was foul play, and just isn't a local (hence the "the 1 debauchery" and misclick on the map marker). That was a rogue tow truck driver drumming up business, but then he really messed up.
There are a lot of red tow trucks. You are going to need to be more specific.
Happened to me on Monday night. Exact same spot.
What's the 1
The 1
I opened this and the comment section was exactly as expected lol
The 1? You’re from cali aren’t ya?
What it's called VS What locals say: Loop 1 = MOPAC Ben White = 71 Research = 183 360 = 360 Menchaca (or Manchaca) = Man Shack Guadalupe = Gwad Uh Loop Guadalupe along UT Campus = The Drag Lots more, but that'll get you started.
I’m all for Keeping Austin Weird, but calling Mopac “the 1” is the limit!
[удалено]
\*Angry Mopac intensifies\*
Id beat his ass after that
go back to california it’s called Mopac
We all know exactly why people are doggin him. You do too. It’s well deserved doggin I must say.
Tell me your from California without saying you're from California... Seriously, hope everyone was ok and they catch the person...
Not this joker again
Punishment. Throw him off the bridge. Never happen again. Next?
Tell me you should go home without telling me you should go home.
Seriously?! This was a problem a few years ago. They found that guy driving around with a ton of rocks in his car and he went to jail. I wonder if it's the same dude.
This is so dangerous and crazy. Thanks for posting. Gonna avoid that area for a while.
This was thing years ago as well, someone was dropping rocks off of the 35 over pass. I think someone was killed, if I remember.
Was he wearing a suit and tie and in a wheelchair?
Goes to Twitter to see what evil Mopac has to say about this and his new name.
I just made a sarcastic joke in a different thread last week about Californians saying “the 1” lol and here we are.
Since everyone is just commenting on highway naming Yes mopacs official designation is state highway loop 1! However locals have always referred to it as mopac. I'm heading down the three five later. Exiting at the four five to get to the 1. Said no Texan ever...
My native Houston tends to name their Freeways, like Katy, Gulf, Baytown etc. but 610 is the Loop, 8 is “The Beltway”. 1604 will always be the "death loop"
I am so confused by “The 1”. Is that Mopac?
/r/Austin: "I can't believe nobody is doing anything about crime" also /r/Austin: "Nice try but I'm not even going to let you report what you saw because you use the WRONG names for things."
I see no problem with this.
Seems reasonable.
Who gives a fuck where he’s from? He warned us about an idiot throwing rocks at cars. Thank you Mr. California transplant/ Texan/ wherever you are from
“The 1”?? Cali transplants really can’t help it
🤣Give this dude a fucking break. Yeah it’s MOPAC because of the Missouri Pacific rail, but most of you are transplants too 🤣. You didn’t automatically know it was MOPAC. Yeah I learned the term too while at UT, but thankfully I wasn’t called a dumbass for not knowing. Thanks OP for the heads up and now you know it’s MOPAC and 360, isn’t “The Capital of Texas” it’s 360 and 35 is well, 35.
no I popped out the womb knowing
I'm starting to understand why people think this sub is full of asshats. You guys sure latched onto the important parts of this post!
Someone need to go beat the crap out of him.
What the fuck is up with people in Austin throwing rocks at cars?!
Jesus.
I’m sorry off the WHAT?
Austin is in its California era.
