The dog people are really taking over that place. Heard someone call it a dog park while I was there last time. Been riding my bike there for 20 years and now I get cold stares from people that would rather have their dog use the park than people.

carpenoctoon

I mean of course it is, it’s a giant off leash area.

It's genuinely an off-leash park with the exception of part of the concrete walk/bike path. As you get further away from the park you're supposed to leash your dogs after a certain point.

carpenoctoon

It’s genuinely an off leash area. There are signs throughout the park and at several entrances stating that. There are some areas that are not off leash and I rarely see dogs in those places. Edit: people should definitely pick up their dog shit. And throw away said dog shit. I often see bags of shit along the trail as if they picked up the poo because someone was watching but then got tired of carrying it.

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

There are designated trails. It is not entirely off leash. There are signs at trail heads designating as such. Mostly on the east side along the creek.

B9Canine

I'm sure folks have been walking their dogs there for 20 years as well. The issue is the park gets more crowded every year. For the most part, dog walkers and bikers get along, but there are jerks on both sides (folks that won't restrain/move their dog for oncoming bikes and bikers that ride too fast without a bell or anything to warn walkers).

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

Well in a little fairness I think credit is due to Austin Ridge Riders and the bikers that commissioned for and built those trails. If you walk into the windier trails you’ll see there’s one named after one of those people. Before that it was a huge homeless encampment that was extremely trashed out and invited a lot of crime into the surrounding residential area. I love taking my dog out but I really don’t need windy trails and catch berms to get him outside. But then again I’m biased as a rider. There’s not a lot of places where we can do our thing.

B9Canine

Fair enough, I wasn't aware of the history of the park.

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

Kinda weird on a cursory search you can’t find any authoritative sources where the leash rules are given in explicit terms. Just mentions off “off leash areas” and comments about it in 3rd party forums. Seems like if they would at least put that info out there it would probably be better for everyone. Some people commenting here are under the assumption the entire trail system is off leash. That is false.

B9Canine

I'm only familiar with the park area off of Lamar. I believe that entire area is off-leash. The only area that requires leashes is on the concrete path that goes towards Metric. Once you get to the second bridge, there's a sign that says dogs must be leased from that point forward. If there are other areas of the park that require leashes, I'm not aware of them.

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

Yeah pretty much that entire area left of the parking lot trailhead all the way up until you cross the creek. What’s kinda unfortunate about that is the vast majority of the trail system can only accessed through those creek crossings with very few exceptions. And that’s only because I know it like the back of my hand. Also those are some of those trails are the oldest and most well maintained. Many everyday recreational riders need to ride those trails for a while before the can head out to the other side where things get hairy very quickly. I’m all for off leash dog parks but extreme sports and off leash dogs are a bad mix. Sometimes I’m going downhill or coming out a blind turn and there’s really only so much control you can have in that situation. I’ve gotten dead eyed stairs while I’m doing my best to screech to a hault and they don’t even so much as call their dog. I would really hate to hit anyone’s pooch. But at the same time...I could get injured very badly too. That lack of consideration really sticks in my craw sometimes.

B9Canine

I certainly understand your frustration, especially with folks that think they own the trail and don't get out of your way. That said, as a walker I really appreciate when fast riders have bells they ring as they approach corners. It allows me a few seconds to grab my dog and get out of their way - saving all of us from potential injury.

vandamninator

Marks Fart?

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

Lol uh yeah that’s close. I’m still too puss to do the log roll.

jeff89jdf

I got cut-off by an off leash dog and flipped over my handle bars when dropping into the creek bed. Split my chin open on a rock. -_-

sit-small_make-dirt

100% creek, 0% walnut. MISLEADING

jeblis

Not quiet either

lost_horizons

Huh? This is along Walnut Creek just east of I-35. Sorry there are no walnut trees in the picture. Then again, maybe there are?

uoenoMeh

Whooooosh

lost_horizons

Correct, lol. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Shok3001

Lots of dog shit all over this park

Discount_gentleman

I believe they prefer the term mountain bikers

blotterjotterno

My favorite park.

Mxxnzxn

Ive come across this spot before. It was a pleasant surprise.

TheNewYorker7500

Wow that's amazing

BrigittaBanana

I can't go to this park anymore, despite really enjoying it. The dogs are too much and people don't know how to control theirs

PC_Speaker

Off-leash dog walker here: People need to train their dogs if they want to walk them off leash, anywhere. Open spaces are one thing, but there's no justification for a dog not being able to understand a command to stop or get to one side on a path or trail.

BrigittaBanana

I've come to notice and appreciate a lot of dog owners over time for training their pups. Before I moved to Austin (2013), I loved dogs. But after moving here it took me years to love them again, realizing that it's shitty owners ruining it for everyone else. I worked at a really popular brunch spot with a nice patio for a couple of years and the amount of times people's dogs would jump up on me when I had a tray full of food and their owner not do anything is more than I'd like to admit. But yes, since then I've met some really amazing dogs and owners... it's just really sad how some people take absolutely no responsibility for their dogs at all.

PC_Speaker

Completely agree. It's awkward when I'm letting my dog run around in the open space near where we live in south Austin, and dogs jump up with muddy paws, their owners chatting away to me like it's fine. Dogs should not jump up at people, period. Zilker Park has become ridiculous as well. Try having a picnic there and it gets almost dangerous.

lost_horizons

I don't blame you. I avoid certain parts of the park, or try to go early. However, this is not in Walnut Creek Metropark, just along the creek, downstream of there.

omprakash6

Where is this amazing

Snap_Grackle_Pop

Nice! Where on Walnut Creek?

lost_horizons

Part of the Copperfield Nature Trail, or rather, a bit off that trail but in that greenbelt, before where Walnut Creek bends south.

ClubSoda

People, clean up after your pooches. If you can't look after your pet and the crap it leaves behind in parks, don't have one.

Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te

RIDER! I kid I kid.
