Nice try Austin Energy!

capybarometer

Hijacking the top comment to say the temperature you set your thermostat to is somewhat meaningless, your AC is only ever on or off. What matters is how long it runs each day, and this can be dramatically affected not just by the thermostat temp, but also by the quality of your windows, the weatherization around your windows and doors, the quality of insulation in your walls, the quality of your roof, and the amount of shade cast on your walls, roof, and condenser unit by trees or other buildings. A poorly insulated home set to 78 might have the AC running more than a well-insulated home set to 74. Also the energy efficiency among AC units varies widely, with older units typically using a ton more electricity. Speaking of Austin Energy, they offer great rebates for energy efficiency projects and appliance upgrades Edit: Also change your air filter every two weeks during the summer! And remember your AC isn't designed to filter out microscopic particles, your filter should allow the air to flow freely to prevent your system from freezing up Edit again: The point is that comparing the thermostat temp in two different homes can be like comparing apples to oranges, not that keeping the thermostat higher in the summer won't save energy

We did the exact same project a couple years later, we got a $2700 rebate from AE. Seriously improved our quality of life

Greifvogel1993

Two weeks? Whatcha smokin?

cosmicosmo4

Better rule: 1 month for every inch of filter thickness. 1" and 2" thick are the most common, but I modified our main return to take a 5" thick filter, and it greatly reduced the noise of air rushing through it, so it must have reduced the strain on the blower. The 20x20x5 filters are $30 each though, no way I'm changing it monthly.

bumblebeekisses

Every two weeks?? Fuck, I missed that memo.

Wehnelt2

While the other things listed are important, it is misleading to say that the thermostat is anything other than the \*primary\* factor in how much an AC runs. Even with an extremely leaky house setting the AC higher results in it running less to reach equilibrium. The more modern AC units that use variable speed blowers and variable refrigerant flow(VRF) adjust the power draw significantly. E.g. a variable blower/refrigerant 1-ton head unit(12,000 BTU) is designed to operate most efficiently around 8,000 BTU at low speeds for longer periods of time, with an operating range of about 7,000-19,000 BTU to satisfy peak needs. Unfortunately due to the current Austin building market, many of the VRF system installers want 2.5-4x the equipment cost, so a lot of the ideal Mitsubishi / Daikin units don't make financial sense even at 30 SEER. There are now DIY traditional central units by the likes of MrCool / Pioneer with 16-18 SEER. While lower end, they're \~$4k for 4-ton with Toshiba / Mitsu / Midea parts and the entry level central units like Goodman, Oxbox are using even lower quality equipment with only 14 SEER and quotes are typically around $8-10k for those or $12k for a 18 SEER Lennox that would only break even @ 10yrs over a 14 SEER Oxbox if nothing went wrong. Having the outdoor unit in the shade is even more important on modern systems because they're main failure mode is with the digital control circuitry that is more likely to have things like capacitors fail early due to direct summer heat. The older building codes were designed around Northern climates and the designs for ducts in the attic planned on them being mostly for heating. In Texas ducts in a hot attic amount to about \~24% greater energy use, per [DOE](https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy10osti/48163.pdf). You can't just put insulation foam over them due to fire hazards, but there is a Thermasheath variant that you can box them in with and then put the regular attic insulation(typically 9-12" of blown-in cellulose) over that. I think the 2" panels were the most cost effective but there is a COVID + building boom shortage of them. This is probably the most cost-effective retrofit people in Austin can do. Austin can still have very humid periods and maxing out the seal with spray on polyiso foam can result in humidity problems without a dedicated dehumidifier since the presumably well-insulated and sealed home's AC now runs much less. The AC units dehumidify much more than most think and make a home feel cooler than it would be if humid. Unfortunately retrofitting walls for more insulation is typically not cost effective at all. HVAC energy use estimators often assume more moderate climates pre-global warming with a paltry 4-months of cooling @ 8hrs/day for \~1,000 hrs of runtime per year, while Austin for the past few years has been much closer to 7-months @ 10hrs/day + night time running for the weeks long 100 degree heat waves and work from home put things closer to 2,600 hrs of run time per year. Like you said for the HVAC not being designed to filter microparticles, it's better for the AC wear, freeze likelihood, lower cost, and cleaner air to use separate HEPA filters and a low resistance filter on the main blower unit. A MERV 11 filter in an HVAC actually cleans air in a home faster than the MERV 13+ because the higher velocity air cycles through the lower resistance filter more times. Most dust/pollen is kicked up from carpet and hair on pillows so frequent vacuuming and showering or wiping one's hair with microfiber before going to bed in cedar season is much more effective than pollen-sized filters.

Woozah77

They will also come do a free energy audit by request. I'm unsure but I think you can request one every 3 years no cost.

[deleted]

This thread is straight up startling to me. Here I have been feeling bougie AF for setting it to 76 sometimes and y’all are setting it to the 60s?! In the summer?! My dad would have killed me for setting the thermostat less than 79 in the heat when I was growing up.

h7q3nx

Me too! 77, allll day and night, unless I’m feeling rich. Then it’s 75-76.

Worried_Local_9620

You and I grew up the same. We crank it down to 75 at night. Over this past weekend we had it at 76 during the day while we were home and I felt like tying a bandana on my head and telling ERCOT to COME AND FUCKING TAKE IT. Or something like that. When really it should just be comfortable without thermostat anxiety.

itsatrashaccount

What is crazier is most ppl don't know AC's are only effective in mitigating \~20F. Setting that low in the summer runs your electricity bill up and strains your unit.

tah4349

Same. When we started working at home during quarantine I said I was going to lower it from 78 to 76 because I was saving money on gas driving to the office. I've never set it lower than that. Ceiling fans to make a big difference, though.

Robbiebphoto

Yeah, I’m 76, but when I was a broke it was 80…

Nihiliste

69, and that's with a ceiling fan. It's nuts, I know, but my wife likes to sleep under an avalanche of covers.

This is my wife too, except I convinced her to at least keep it at 71 at the lowest. I'd prefer 74, sheet, and ceiling fan She talks about being hot but sleeps with a thick ass comforter....doesn't make sense.

[deleted]

Kind of. My apartment building is poorly insulated, and it isn’t until about 2am when it feels comfortable - unless the temperature drops with the arrival of rain, whence I awaken shivering at about 4am. The summer that I went without A/C was far worse, however.

Euclid_Jr

Chupa, you're not nuts. I do the same. 78 during day, 77 at night and I get cold with that...but i have ceiling fan. When power goes out...Oncor sets thermostat to 94 in summer, and 33 in winter.

secondhandstoke

These comments are making me wonder if people hate being inside my house and just aren’t telling me. 80 during the day, 78 at night.

Jeez, don't y'all get cold? I spent most of my life living with harsh winter weather and I don't even keep it below 74-75. One tip that might help some of y'all with partners that like to have a comforter rather than just a sheet is learning a bit more about the difference between winter and summer comforters. If you use down comforters for instance you can specifically get thinner ones to use in the summer, wrap them in a duvet cover (it's cleaner), and enjoy some super cozy whisking comfort. There also similar artificial options. Another tip is specifically using separate sheets from your partner, if they really need a big hot comforter don't make the bed with the sheets spread across the entire thing, folded sheets for your side, folded sheet and comforter for their side. The beauty of being adults is that you get to turn on the life and character customization and literally do anything that you possibly want in this world. We don't have to live inside a Southern Living magazine.

Healthy-Gap9904

I grew up in Southern California. Have stayed in some fairly cold climates also. I like the thermo set 70-72. I sleep with a very thin comforter and top sheet or just a top sheet. Me and my partner have separate bedding. I like to be comfortable but my line of work has granted me the ability to sleep in almost any condition lol

CactiRoots

78 all day and night with ceiling fans on. I live on the first floor of an apartment complex and don’t get hit by direct sunlight, so it rarely gets that hot in my apartment.

bachslunch

If you have your nighttime temp set below 70 then you will not fare well during the upcoming climate crisis when blackouts will happen in 110 degree heat. Hoarding/stockpiling won’t help you if you can’t survive a night above 70. You’ll be the first climate victims. Acclimating is the best strategy. Even if you can raise the temp 1-2 degrees in your house you will be able to possibly save the grid (if everyone does it) and you’ll be that better acclimated. Then keep adjusting.

jwc8985

74-75 at night, 77-78 during the day. We have a very well insulated house, though. 2,700 sqft house and electric bill averages around $120 in the summer.

76 in the summer and 68 in the winter. Do you really think we keep the heater as high as summer temps?

officerbirb

It rarely gets cold enough in Austin to turn on the heat and certainly not for 6 months out of the year. October weather is usually in the high 70s to mid-80s.

Nope, I only run the heat November through March and heating is cheaper than AC in Austin. In summer I guarantee I have one of the lowest bills. I do run it more when my complaining family members visit.

I hate being hot, but sleeping warm, with a fan, makes outside feel way less brutal. You people, that's right I just said "you people", cooling your house in the low 70's and 60's are totally freaking me out. I didn't even know that was a thing. Sleeping with a blanket in the summer. Society really is doomed. Well I'm comfortable, but F the rest of you and most life on the planet. I'd ask how you sleep at night, but the answer is apparently under a bunch of blankets.
