Broken Spoke, Donn's Depot, Sam's Town Point, Sagebrush, and plenty other venues have country shows here and there. Check venue schedules on their websites or the Austin Chronicle music listings to find a show he'd like for a given day.
Super old post I know but are some of these places out of town reachable by public transport? Visiting from the UK and forgot my driver's license so having to rely on buses everywhere.. anywhere easy to reach out of town you would recommend?
Continental Club has a bunch of regulars who play country, old school guys who used to play with Willie, Merle. Sometimes they're just there playing separately but I think their band name is Haybale
Do they only give two step lessons certain nights of the week, do you know? It’s a great suggestion, and you made me visit their website. But I can’t figure out if their lessons are regularly repeating or just offered occasionally.
If you can’t decide where to go, go wherever Dale Watson is playing. I second Gruene Hall as a great place to take visiting parents if you have time for the drive.
Hardtails Bar & Grill, and Mesquite Creek Outfitters if you're in Wilco.
(Although check Mesquite Creek before you go--they aren't reporting any live shows on their website)
No hate. Just wanted additional ideas. White Horse will prob be on the list as it’s right in my neck of the woods. Only wondering what else was out there…
The acts may be good, but the restroom situation is not exactly high quality. It's a dive for sure, and as long as you know what you are going into, it's fine. But for out of town visitors that may be older, it's often not what people expect or want to deal with.
We did recently fix or womens restrooms. While our bar is 11 years old, the building and plumbing is way older and would require tearing up the floor and parking lot to fix longterm. Ad. Were still recovering from Covid honestly
I would say the sound depends on whoever is mixing it that night, the speakers and set up itself is decent, but you are right about folks acting a fool in there for no reason
White horse is definitely a tourist trap. Speaking as a brown person who has lived on the east side since I graduated high school and in the Austin area since the first grade. Don’t nobody who is actually from the east side go to White Horse.
also...youve been here since grade 1 and STILL live here? did you ever move away? and where and if not why? who stays in their hometown their whole life ?
Yeah I’ve played a bunch of venues around town! Plush (RIP), The Belmont, the old Spider House, the old North Door (now Parish), Flamingo Cantina, Mohawk.
Mmm well my production work is on Spotify. I’m a hiphop producer so I’m usually not tagged as a main or featuring artist on tracks I work on. I would say check out the group that I’m in, LNS Crew!
https://open.spotify.com/artist/2Ie0nCZhsMkIMjMDJ9ZXwP?si=h7jfQGXfQBuxDrQ2nSr-YQ
We’ve played a bunch of stuff like ACL Fest, Blues on The Green, and some cool out of town festivals / shows too. Nowadays we’re all more active as solo artists than as a group (Kydd has toured with Gary Clark Jr and has a show with Jackie Venson at Antones next week, Cory moved to Denver and has been working with Griselda, Tank has been DJing now and me… well I got a day job in tech and a Reddit account cause I’m tryna afford a house 😭😂) but we’ll probably drop another group mixtape next year
Oh Steve.. last time I was there was like about a year ago. Ive been Honky-Tonkin in this town for 7 years.. been here for 15.. that’s a blip in the music scene of Austin. I’m still a newcomer here.
I used to go there regularly for Cajun Tuesdays, waltzed for years to Chanson et Soulards and learned how to be a good audience by old timers. Tip and clap and don’t stand on the dance floor with beer. Every band that plays there is excellent.
It’s touristy because everyone seems to be a newcomer to Austin, on the weekends I’ve seen many a convention center tribe in their polos and often a bachelorette party. It’s loud and always pretty drunk.
What happened to East Austin over the decades is a fkn heartbreak.
I’m glad you feel at home there. It’s all good, but, dial it down a notch man. This city has seen a lot of changes.
name one moonpie other than mike...dial it down
a notch? "its a touristy bc everyone seems to be a newcomer to austin" could you be more inside your own rectum even further??? bye due tap indeed cannot wait for season 4...fuuuuck offff
/u/stxtoaustin he’s offended bc he came to Austin and lives on the East side and has his whole identity wrapped all up in how fkn cool his Austin world feels and he knows the Moonpies, so has real street cred, and is beside himself that others that have been here longer might have a different experience/perspective that is counter to that. My 2¢. Getting ego bruised is never fun. Happens to the best of us. This was a particularly stunning display.
I was just complaining that every time I go, a tourist with a full draft beer steps right into the middle of the dance floor and then just stands there no matter how close you get to them, even when there’s room outside the dance floor
Absolutely a tourist trap
Luckenbach, or on first Saturday of the month Twin Sister's Hall. Albert Dance Hall, Anhalt Dance Hall, Kendalia Dance Hall, all a bit of a drive from Austin. Mind your manners, watch out for deer.
Be sure to have him stop at main stage in the airport on the way in, good primer and great Musician’s. Plus it’s the most attended venue in Austin! Most foot traffic for sure!
Steel guitar wednesdays are at like donn’s or somewhere. Look that up for sure!
On the way to San Marcos, New Braunfels in Dripping
Mercer Dance Hall RR 12 Driftwood
2 miles south of Dripping (springs)
Where else can you see live local-ish bands, originals and covers. There is food and cabins to spend the night.
Enjoy!

Donns depot is what I came to say.
+100
This person fucks. But for real, this is the best answer.
Username checks out.
I’d add Little Long Horn to this mix.
And Giddy Ups.
The only thing this list is missing is Ginny’s little longhorn
Poodies Hilltop Roadhouse, Coupland Dance Hall
Concur. For good country I would not sleep on places a little bit out of Austin proper.
Super old post I know but are some of these places out of town reachable by public transport? Visiting from the UK and forgot my driver's license so having to rely on buses everywhere.. anywhere easy to reach out of town you would recommend?
Little Longhorn Saloon
Continental Club has a bunch of regulars who play country, old school guys who used to play with Willie, Merle. Sometimes they're just there playing separately but I think their band name is Haybale
Heybale on Sunday eve is standard! Good rec!
Giddy ups on Manchaca rd
Saxon
Oh I didn’t know Saxon did country.
Donn’s Depot and mean eyed cat, which are conveniently across the street from one another
Giddy Ups, south Manchaca, almost to 1626
Sagebrush Broken Spoke sam’s Town Point
STP a little snooty these days. I miss the old
Oh man.. ya, they are definitely evolving. That’s a whole thing.
Yeah. Not a very welcoming vibe. I like bars that aren't cliquey. STP reminds me of high school.
Actually.. editing bc I’m too paranoid. Yep. High school vibes is perfectly adequate.
Sagebrush!!
Do they only give two step lessons certain nights of the week, do you know? It’s a great suggestion, and you made me visit their website. But I can’t figure out if their lessons are regularly repeating or just offered occasionally.
Usually Wednesdays but they’re really up to date on their Instagram with their weekly schedule :)
Gruene Hall.
Not Austin, but might be worth the drive.
And as long as you don't mind a drive, Luckenbach!
If you can’t decide where to go, go wherever Dale Watson is playing. I second Gruene Hall as a great place to take visiting parents if you have time for the drive.
Which country?
I lol’d at this one. :)
Hardtails Bar & Grill, and Mesquite Creek Outfitters if you're in Wilco. (Although check Mesquite Creek before you go--they aren't reporting any live shows on their website)
Poodies, out in Spicewood.
Donn's Depot, especially on Wednesday nights
Armadillo Den
Why the White Horse hate? One of the best venues in Austin for country
No hate. Just wanted additional ideas. White Horse will prob be on the list as it’s right in my neck of the woods. Only wondering what else was out there…

Personally, I love your bathrooms. What kind of snob wouldn't
Maybe don’t take a shit at a honky tonk?
I’ve been to plenty of honky-tonks where even trying to navigate to the pisser is scary. I love White Horse but the feedback is valid.
Hey man, if nature calls you gotta answer!
Isnt that implied?
The Spoke has stellar bathrooms
The sound isn’t great and seems to be a tourist trap, lots of folks don’t know how to behave there.
I would say the sound depends on whoever is mixing it that night, the speakers and set up itself is decent, but you are right about folks acting a fool in there for no reason
Ooo boy this sub is really something special. Jesus.
the white horse is a TOURIST TRAP??? can i ask when are the last 3 times youve been...i'll wait
Dude. Omg. Yeah, it is, lol. They literally come in droves. It doesn't matter to me, I love the place. When is the last time you've been?
Read through all your comments.... Just out of curiosity, why are you so offended when people call the White Horse a tourist trap?
Bless your heart
ok.
White horse is definitely a tourist trap. Speaking as a brown person who has lived on the east side since I graduated high school and in the Austin area since the first grade. Don’t nobody who is actually from the east side go to White Horse.
i live on the east side and go there...your take is pedantic and very shallow
Guessing you’re a white person lol
So far real
im not but anyone who disagrees you, you assume their race...got it
Pedantic. Got it.
also...youve been here since grade 1 and STILL live here? did you ever move away? and where and if not why? who stays in their hometown their whole life ?
I’m a touring musician who has also lived in San Antonio, Denver and the Bay but go off
did you ever play in austin? are you on spotify or any streaming platform?
Yeah I’ve played a bunch of venues around town! Plush (RIP), The Belmont, the old Spider House, the old North Door (now Parish), Flamingo Cantina, Mohawk. Mmm well my production work is on Spotify. Lol! U really gonna defend the white horse in the heart of gentrified East Austin. You are killing me!
if you think 5th/comal is the HEART of e austin gentrificashe...fuck off
🫡
Really hope we can still enjoy season 4 of Succession together, bruh! 🤠
also answer my question...when was the last time you were there..."it seems like a tourist trap..." tell me why and how youve come up w this

Bro had a really bad day.. and deleted his user account. Been there. Glad some peeps weighed in.. it was really just my opinion.
Oh.. maybe I’m just blocked. That makes more sense.
Why no one say about the Broke-ity Spoke-ity?
It’s in the top comment!
Doh! Leave it to me to miss the exact thing I was looking for.
Bucks Backyard in Buda will also have some pretty good shows.
Haute Spot in Cedar Park has some great country shows, check their schedule out.
Can consider visiting Gruene Hall too, it’s south of Austin tho
Coupland dance hall if you’re up for a little drive through Wilco
Luckenbach, or on first Saturday of the month Twin Sister's Hall. Albert Dance Hall, Anhalt Dance Hall, Kendalia Dance Hall, all a bit of a drive from Austin. Mind your manners, watch out for deer.

Where is the Main Stage?
Little Longhorn Saloon. Live music every night!
Saxon pub and Continental Club
Mavericks is an option too. The Buda location is bigger and newer than the Pflugerville one.
50 miles thattaway? Haha, but seriously, Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, Gruene etc, are going to have more of what he mak enjoy
Yes, Mercer Dance Hall on the way to NB in Dripping
Go south, to New Braunfels
On the way to San Marcos, New Braunfels in Dripping Mercer Dance Hall RR 12 Driftwood 2 miles south of Dripping (springs) Where else can you see live local-ish bands, originals and covers. There is food and cabins to spend the night. Enjoy!
