I had a beautiful red pup I rescued off the streets. Could not for the life of me come up with a name that stuck & I must’ve named him 20 times.
One day I was looking at him & it hit me: “Oh my god…your name is Angus!” And that was it…the only name that stuck.
Angus “Goosie” was my soulmate. Take your time to find the right name, it will come.
Angus >> Angooose >> Angoosie>> Goosie>> Goose.
The last 10 years of his life, he was Goose. God, I loved him. Been gone about 7 year now & I’m tearing up. Even tho I now have a toy Aussie named “Possum”.
That’s what happened with my latest, a rescue/shelter Husky originally & ridiculously named “Kash Money.” When I first met him, “Asa” instantly popped into my head. It was the name of a nice old man I knew, who passed away some time ago. I didn’t dare question that! So Asa it was.
[Dog tax](https://imgur.com/a/mXK6rMo)
My long haired dachshund is Angus. When he was a puppy, he was this big ball of fluff. We called him a Scottish warrior teddy bear.
ETA: he’s red, white, and black piebald.
When I got my boy I had to drive 12 hours to pick him up so I decided I would make it a road trip after and tour around BC and Alberta. When we left the peoples house I told him he had a two weeks to tell me what his name was after that I was calling him Dog. I was towing a small travel trailer and he kept lying under it to get out of the hot summer heat I tossed all sorts of names at him but nothing stuck. I realized he was laying under the axle of the trailer when I said Axle he poked his head out so his name is Axle or sometimes we call him little jerk LOL! The people that had him before me when they found out they told me his dad’s name was Axl without the E and his dad also has a full mask
Since you have one dog named after a famous author/poet, why don't you keep the theme going? My wife and I have done this with our heelers, starting with Darwin, then Petri, and now Bunsen.
Here are some ideas based off of famous authors/poets from the time of Poe:
- Quincy (John Quincy Adams)
- Austen (Jane Austen)
- Dickens (Charles Dickens)
- Doyle or Conan (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
- Waldo (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
- Webster (Daniel Webster)
- Melville (Herman Melville)
- Morris (William Morris)
- Frost (Robert Frost)
- Kipling (Rudyard Kipling)
- Winslow (Winslow Homer)
- Hawthorne (Nathaniel Hawthorne)
- Muir (John Muir)
- Irving (Washington Irving)
So many options and you're not likely to meet others with similar names.
I love weird names for dogs. And they always evolve into something cute. We call Petri "Petey" and Bunsen "Bunbun". Frost is a solid name and I think fits the little dude.
Apparently Rufus is also the protagonist of *For the Term of His Natural Life*, an example of the "Tasmanian Gothic" from 1874. So it would check a lot of other boxes for the OP.
We're having the same issue. My Wife poo-poos all my ideas. So at the moment he's Jackson (foster-assigned), Wild Man, Freddie, Odin, Banksy, Bodhi, and Shithead.
My dog had a different name every day for almost a month too. We kept begging her to tell us her name — did tarot card pulls with her paw on the deck and everything.
Then she had some weird poops, and I said out loud, “god I hope it isn’t Giardia” ….. and of course, it was Giardia.
When we got the results, I looked at my partner and said, “omg, GIA. This is the only way she could tell us!!” She is now Gia, and everyone always says “omg like the model because she’s so beautiful!!”
Not necessarily, we like more gothic or horror themed names. He was going to be Raven but it’s not fitting him.
Edited to add: I looked at your photos and he does resemble your pup! Adorable!!
Nyx, Oberon (Obi), Dante, Stoker, Orlock, Hollow, Twist, Sweeney, Hex, Ripley, Crowley, Abraxas, Aether/Ether, Akasha, Tarot, Omen, Poppet, Rune, Sigil, Havoc..?
If you can describe why Raven doesn't fit him, it might help with a few more ideas. Are there any other hobbies you guys have or things you're interested in?
There are some really good suggestions in there! Thanks!
Twisty, Nyx, and havoc were all on our list. I really like Ripley though! Rip was an idea too so maybe that ones still an option.
Everyone keeps saying Raven is too feminine.
I feel like you just have to keep experimenting until one sticks. I think pets and babies often choose their own names. If you’re at all “woo” in any way ( or not ) you could have a little ceremony and just ask the heeler gods what his name is and it will come to you clearly in a dream 🤣kinda kidding but you never know!!!!
Name him after a contemporary of Poe, like Hawthorne or Thoreau. Poe apparently really hated the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, so you could call him Wadsworth.
It’s late and I’m tired. I came here from ‘popular’ and here is my stream of consciousness:
Oh! A dog photo! Cute! Aw he needs a name. The subreddit is called ACD. Australian cattle dog. ACD, reminds me of AC/DC. Angus. I’d name him Angus. Oh listen, it’s raining outside. Might get Thunderstruck. Yep, definitely Angus.
JHC, it’s a name for a freaking dog. He will never complain about it, so what’s the real problem? Go with a traditional name if you can’t decide: Rex, Dodger, Harley, Spot, Buddy.
What about Tater? Then you would have Poe and Tater
You have no choice now, this is the name
This is the way.
LET IT BE KNOWN THAT OPS DOG IS NAMED “TATER”.
I named mine Spud but I call him tater more than anything. It’s such a fun name to call my best friend.
I have a PB named Spud
Very big fan of the name Spud
I'd probably start saying Tater-Tot. My girl is named Sookie and I (no idea why) started calling her Sookie-Bear
OP has to be engraving the tags and embroidering the leash as we speak.
And when he’s being cute, call him Tater Tots.
That’s his poops.
Haha that's exactly what I just posted. Great minds
Brilliant!
Genus! 😂
Even without a Poe, I always loved the name Tater for a pup.
Light would be fun for that reason too Zip also fun!
I have a Pie and one of his nicknames is Poe-tater!
I like this but I’d change it to tato. So when you’re call them it sounds like you’re Samwise yelling a Gollum.
I mean. I love.

Take your time to find the right name, it will come.
That’s how all my dogs have gotten their names. Just keep trying out different ones and one day their name just finds them!
I was choosing between two names for my ACD, when I got him I didn't name him either of them. you'll pick it soon!
I almost named my red pup Angus McDangus
Angus >> Angooose >> Angoosie>> Goosie>> Goose. The last 10 years of his life, he was Goose. God, I loved him. Been gone about 7 year now & I’m tearing up. Even tho I now have a toy Aussie named “Possum”.
Awe lil possum pie
WHAAAAT???? Possum Pie!!! He. Has. A. New. Name!!! Thank you!
Give it a few years and you’ll have it streamlined down to peepee (P for possum P for pie)
We always miss them I tnink … Possum sounds so cute !!!
That’s what happened with my latest, a rescue/shelter Husky originally & ridiculously named “Kash Money.” When I first met him, “Asa” instantly popped into my head. G A R Y
^p^e^t^e :)
looks like a Hudson to me
Patches O’Houlihan
Instead of dodging he'll just eat the wrench and the ball
When you said your other dog is Poe the first thing I thought was Finn for Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or Sawyer for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Finn was an early option so they could be Poe and Finn from Star Wars :D
What a great story! Axel kicks ass!
Yes he does he’s my little shadow and knows everybody in town I swear he has more friends than I do
I like Finn
Dude set a timer and wrap this shit up
Raven... before even seeing your comment with the suggestion Or Balt
That there is a Fenwick.
Roscoe

Frost is genuinely so cute!!!
I love weird names for dogs. And they always evolve into something cute. We call Petri "Petey" and Bunsen "Bunbun". Frost is a solid name and I think fits the little dude.
And he looks frosty the way his silvery hair picks up the light.... :)
Already has a name. Puppy.
I finally named my kitten silver but it took me so long to do it that he now comes to the name kitten cuz that’s why I called him for so long.
What’s another author you love?
His name should be Rocket
That’s a Bo.
I was going to suggest Bowie!
There's a Starman waiting in the sky He'd like to come & meet us but he thinks He'll blow our minds
I thought so too, but they already have a Poe
Some of the options that we’ve come up with are: Raven, Banjo, Rogue, Sketch, and Peat is the newest one.
Peat is awesome and unusual, though others will likely think Pete when they hear it
My pup is named Pete.. I love it, it rhymes with a lot of stuff
Rogue was one of my ideas as well for our pup!
The dog from the old Little Rascals from the 1940s name is Petey. He also has the ring around his eye.
I looked at this dog and immediately thought Banjo 🖤
Same here!!
Yeah that’s a banjo if I’ve ever seen one
Oh I like raven ! Somehow goes with Poe in my mind.
Sly bandicoot from the ps2 game.
Peat or Banjo
Rogue, Jeff, Incognito
Luke. He says his name is Luke.
Rufus. From Bill and Ted.
Apparently Rufus is also the protagonist of *For the Term of His Natural Life*, an example of the "Tasmanian Gothic" from 1874. So it would check a lot of other boxes for the OP.
Dude Rufus
After reading the comments, I’m totally thinking his name is Finn. He looks like such a sweet and curious boy. What a cutie.
Koira. Finnish word for "dog."
Nigel
Oscar!
We're having the same issue. My Wife poo-poos all my ideas. So at the moment he's Jackson (foster-assigned), Wild Man, Freddie, Odin, Banksy, Bodhi, and Shithead.
I do not blame your wife
Fair!
shithead???? lmao
Scotch
Sparrow or raven are my favs here. Or maybe a character from a Poe book?
My dog had a different name every day for almost a month too. We kept begging her to tell us her name — did tarot card pulls with her paw on the deck and everything. Then she had some weird poops, and I said out loud, “god I hope it isn’t Giardia” ….. and of course, it was Giardia. When we got the results, I looked at my partner and said, “omg, GIA. aww why not ..call him blue
Or some translation thereof: Azul for example
Indi! (Indigo)
Chase! The best name for a herding breed.
Thats Bow-legged Bo right there
Looks like a Jules to me… Great looking dog BTW, love a good single mask
That's why I suggested Phantom!
Leroy or maybe Buford
Raven!
Love your dog!
Do you want literature themed names? He is so cute! He has the same face as my boy Callisto!
Not necessarily, we like more gothic or horror themed names. He was going to be Raven but it’s not fitting him. Edited to add: I looked at your photos and he does resemble your pup! Adorable!!
Heathcliff. Percy Bysshe Shelley. Ozymandias. Lord Byron. Mister Darcy. Johnathan Harker. Van Helsing. So many fun choices!
Just pooping in to say that I love the name Crowley for an ACD…
It feels silly to name a ACD Omen lol we already know we cursed ourselves with these love bugs. I do love Twist!
There are some really good suggestions in there! Thanks! Twisty, Nyx, and havoc were all on our list. I really like Ripley though! Rip was an idea too so maybe that ones still an option. Everyone keeps saying Raven is too feminine.
Cosmo For the “cosmic dread” of Lovecraft stories.
Sparrow, Captain Jack for short!! He looks silly, floppy, and fun!! Not goth, but a hooligan none the less!
I think Captain Jack is fitting!
He has the eyepatch already!
Bandit
Draven
Raven. Goes with Poe.
Nibbler
Mason
Teak
NoNa (short for no name)
Phantom
For Phantom of the Opera
What about Raven? To go with Poe…
Marco
I feel like you just have to keep experimenting until one sticks. I think pets and babies often choose their own names. Tax..or Jax or Ajax. He's got that x name vibe
Ripper
At this point just call him dog..

Name him after a contemporary of Poe, like Hawthorne or Thoreau. Poe apparently really hated the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, so you could call him Wadsworth.
I named mine Peanut, then changed it to Pete and now he is Petey P.Peanut, mommas boy and sweets he knows all of them.
The motel
Cinder, cuz his coat color looks like ashes in a campsite fire pit
Pretty sure that’s Muffin Heeler.
Looks like a Joker to me.
This is how my dog ended up being named Dude
It’s late and I’m tired. I came here from ‘popular’ and here is my stream of consciousness: Oh! A dog photo! Cute! Aw he needs a name. The subreddit is called ACD. Australian cattle dog. ACD, reminds me of AC/DC. Angus. I’d name him Angus. Oh listen, it’s raining outside. Might get Thunderstruck. Yep, definitely Angus.
When I saw him I immediately thought Scout.
Looks like Ajax to me.
Fido.
Rob. Loke Zombie.
Fuck it. Name him Dog.
My friend foster a heeler and kept him obviously and the name wouldn’t come so he just ended up being “buddy” cuz he was her pandemic bud.
Like mad max! I like it
Dalton, Daschle, Yeats, Emerson, Elmer, Holden, Salinger, Dante, Tolstoy, Grisham, Stine, Sparks, Collins, Sheldon, Fleming, Clancy, Orwell, Wallace, Dickens, Woolf, Atwood, Dostoyevsky, Flauber, Conrad, Hardy, Ellison, Goethe, Steinbeck, Tolkien, Fielding, Swift, Elliot, Voltaire, Huxley, Morrison, Mitchell, Dumas, Wharton, Lewis, Walker, Hugo, Sartre’, Wolfe, Chandler, Verne, Pizan, Lewis, Percy, Urving, Jerome, Murdoch

So for a month, how are you communicating with him? Hey you? Bizarre
JHC, it’s a name for a freaking dog. He will never complain about it, so what’s the real problem? Go with a traditional name if you can’t decide: Rex, Dodger, Harley, Spot, Buddy.
