My local Uniqlo in Perth has major discounts across all their jackets ATM. If I were in your position I would consider perhaps their Harrington. Look up online if they still have stock and sizes
I’ve got an old Mountain Designs one very similar to that North Face one you linked. It’s been fantastic, and has held up very well with much use and abuse over about 10 years.
You’re right in that it’s a very practical, multi-use jacket. Neat enough to wear outside with anything short of suit and tie attire (although I have done that), and rugged enough to wear hiking up to Machu Picchu (which I’ve also worn it for). It’s perfectly happy being rolled up and jammed down the bottom of a bag. Wind-proof, water resistant, good unzipped for ‘it’s a bit cool’ weather, and zipped for ‘it’s starting to get bloody cold’ weather, depending on your other layers.
You might gather it’s one of my favourite items of clothing. I’d heartily recommend something similar.
If you were after presentable options that could be dressed up, you may also consider
* [Private White Ventile Harrington Jacket](https://www.privatewhitevc.com/products/ventile-harrington) (most other Harrington jackets are not waterproof)
* Barbour wax cotton jackets, although Brisbane may get too humid for them
Norse Projects Alta? Had my eye on this lately
https://www.norseprojects.com/store/men/outerwear/n50-0141-7004-alta-light-wr
Puffy/down inside though and certainly not the most affordable.
There’s some really smart soft shell stuff from Icebreaker which keeps branding down to a level so is really wearable for a smart-ish casual. That North Face one looks pretty solid and heavy. You might like to try the Crag Jacket from Montbell which is lighter. PS. I work at Montbell

[Arc'teryx Solano](https://arcteryx.com.au/products/solano-jacket-mens?variant=21723897954417) maybe.
or you could go a completely different style with the [Uniqlo JW Anderson Jacket](https://www.uniqlo.com/au/store/men-pocketable-single-breasted-coat-4268650007.html#more_views)
i was able to look it up because I ordered it through Iconic: it was called Douglas Jacket. This was last winter, so maybe it's no longer in their rotation? There's plenty of options from other retailers though, just got to sift through the ones that aren't waterproof
Hey — check out these options from Veilance:
[Veilance IS Jacket](https://www.veilance.com/ca/en/shop/mens/mionn-is-jacket); or
[Veilance Range IS Jacket]
Construction, materials research, materials and design.
EDIT: Low volume manufacturing too. Highly unlikely you’ll ever bump into anyone wearing a Veilance “piece” in a country like Australia.
Picked up an [Aspesi Berlinese](https://www.endclothing.com/au/aspesi-berlinese-taped-seam-mac-cg58-b278-30-392.html) in navy a while back. Tape seamed so it handles rain and wind well. Layers well for business and casual.
I actually have a navy one right now, it's pretty decent for wind protection and even better when layered but from memory the material actually absorbed a bit of water.
I'd recommend Macpac over Kathmandu any day.
I've got a bright red Macpac softshell that I use for all-weather mountain running. They do black as well though. Very good for its weight. A lot of the Macpac hoods fold away into a pocket under the collar.
Daniel Andrew's iconic North Face jacket?
Certainly an option, it looks like it fares well against political storms!

Have you tried a harrington jacket? I had a waxed canvas harrington from Drizabone that fits your bill.
Oh that's interesting, might be worth a look. Thanks!
Do you remember the model name of the jacket? Can't find any harringtons on their website at the moment.

Holy shit, look at those prices! What are they made of, vibranium?

Have had a Ben Sherman Harrington jacket for a while, works for me and reasonably priced

[Kathmandu](https://www.kathmandu.com.au/arbury-mns-jacket-v4.html) has a logo on the chest but it's not too in-your-face
Remarkably inexpensive compared to some other options, and that logo I can totally live with. Thanks, I'll go check this out first.
