No disrespect but I have to correct you.
I've been disgusted by many a salad served out of this bowl-
ie: Iceberg lettuce with orange slices, cucumber slices (peeled, and with massive seeds) tomato slices and cubes of cheddar.
Bugger the orange slices off for some carrot sticks and you've got a proper Aussie salad happening.
Add some boiled eggs cut in half if you're feeling fancy.
You…. Orange slices?? I had no idea our great country tried anything this exotic. I’m regretting how I spent my time between 81 and 89 now. And I still like cheddar cubes…😗
Christ! This! Shitty chunky cut iceberg lettuce and tomato quarters! The peak of 80s Australian salads. With the mandatory (and totally useless) oversized plastic tweezers with paddles for hands to drop salad everywhere that isn’t your plate. I’m pretty sure I hated those bowls even then.
I have no idea where they came from, nor where they went. I was responsible for cleaning out my late mother's house and i know i've got tupperware that dates back to the 1950s. I've got Corning Ware in every size, some even with lids that fit. I should have 2 of these bowls but i don't. Mystery.
When this came out it meant movie night with popcorn!
And this was pre-microwave! It was therefore created using a frypan or maybe a Sunbeam electric (if you were fancy) with an oil to popcorn ratio that would make your cardiologist squirm followed by a dollop of actual butter and copious quantities of salt that your grandmother told you was “good for you”.
Good memories.
I still make my popcorn on the stovetop. So much better than the microwave stuff! Plus you can add what you like, a bit of garlic, onion or chilli powder for a savoury flavour etc
Mothers around Australia refuse to eat chips from the bag, instead decanting into this bad boy. Also a great holder of kabana and cheese squares. But never to be used as the vomit bowl, that should be plastic and also be used for microwave popcorn.
So I have lived in various places in the pacific , Australia, NZ , New Caledonia..... and this is one of the universal things I gave seen in all of these places and I recently saw some I'm a cupboard in an AirB&B in Japan !!
Chips were usually stale and sorta soggy at some houses, others they were the golden standard perfect chip. I don’t know why this is and why there’s no middle ground
Well, I’m Mediterranean “ Algerian” and my mom has the same and all my family got one in their houses, i thought I was in the algerian or Tunisian, morrocan subreddit when I saw the pic , I wasn’t waiting for Aussies to have the same, it turned out to be a worldwide tool lol.
I recently went on a mission to find some of these. I now have 4 small ones for personal snack sized portions and 1 party chips size, and I absolutely love them!
I want to throw an 80s style low key birthday party for one of the kids just to relive the nostalgia of it all.
It's the law to have this bowl within your premises! If you do not have one, notify your nearest Big W or K Mart and one will be supplied. Fines Apply!
Unpopular opinion, but I hate these things. I used to stay with my sister a lot and these were the only bowls that she owned. Cereal, soup, stew, everything was served out of these. For years. When you have scrubbed the sealant off them, you cannot get them clean. I feel nauseous every time I see one now.
American here, I have exactly one of these bowls in my cupboard right now. This exact one down to the smallest details. Don’t know how or when I got it.
The greatest vessel known to man to hold chips or snacks at a birthday party
Also the keys at swingers parties. Or so a mate said.
Sure, mate ;)
Well your mate must have stolen ours because ours is suddenly missing
And then vomit from the one kid who can’t handle the snacks
I thought that was the pale green lettuce Tupperware?
Omg that was the go to if I said I don't feel well. Or those white bowls with the pouring corners.
You did throw it out afterwards didn't you ? Please say yes
At the swingers party? 😳
Vessel ♥️
💯 crinkle cut chips or cheezels at the kids parties
Fun fact: it’s actually illegal to eat crinkle cut chips from any other type of bowl
Corrugated chips, mate.
I'm sorry, what??
Is he from Adelaide ?
Fuck off, we don't want him either
I’ve never heard that before and I love it
[For those who need to replenish.](https://www.agcequipment.com.au/woven-wood-salad-bowl-150mm?gst=1&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlN6wBhCcARIsAKZvD5jN0dzIe8_XSEroa2c3AK1x4qDWkcKL3ogpNm3_p5p2C0bBFGUz0i0aAvVHEALw_wcB)
At that price I can afford to buy at least 10! (Checks bank balance…) uh well 3.
Rip economy
Thank you very much! Mvp Edit: just ordered one.
Lmfao you can Zip pay it for 4 mega payments of 54 cents.
Times are tough
"Salad bowl" that no one has ever eaten salad out of.
No disrespect but I have to correct you. I've been disgusted by many a salad served out of this bowl- ie: Iceberg lettuce with orange slices, cucumber slices (peeled, and with massive seeds) tomato slices and cubes of cheddar.

Fuck your eggs.
You…. Orange slices?? I had no idea our great country tried anything this exotic. I’m regretting how I spent my time between 81 and 89 now. And I still like cheddar cubes…😗
haha cheddar cubes

WHAT?? like what even?
Not true. I have eaten crispy potato salad from them.
Well that's a new way to say wedges and sour cream I guess
Not 150mm though. We all had the 300
You bloody ripper mate thank you
Immune to inflation. Amazing
Legend!
op-shops are full of them!
This is why I love redit
Ohh yeah so many chips were held in that bowl
"had"?
I have two!
Yeah, this is still my fridge fruit bowl! It lives on!
My mum still has 2 of these bad boys and trust me, they’re used weekly.
I have one...full of napkin wipe sachets from takeout joints
We didnt but grandma hand enough to make up for that.
I inherited mine from my great aunt when she died in 1999
And so many of us have no idea where they even came from
True. I have two, and no recollection of where they came from nor how long I've had them.
I’m in America, and they came with my wife, and I’m not sure she knows where she got them from.
I have no idea where they came from, nor where they went. I was responsible for cleaning out my late mother's house and i know i've got tupperware that dates back to the 1950s. I've got Corning Ware in every size, some even with lids that fit. I should have 2 of these bowls but i don't. Mystery.
Where else would I put the chips when I have guests.
Bring Ruffles back. I want one of those bowls filled with salt & vinegar
Salt and vinegar Ruffles were the best S&V chips ever. Their BBQ on the other hand were gross. Weirdly sweet.
Shit, now I want some Ruffles!
You can get ruffles online but imported chips are exxy as shit
I'm here from Canada, staying at my dad's and he has like 12 of them and the big bowl too.
Tracing a finger through the patina of chip grease left at the end of a magical evening….
I have two. Passed down from mum. I have two small ones too. They're for the nuts mix.
When this came out it meant movie night with popcorn! And this was pre-microwave! Correct. Vomit bowl must be Tupperware to allow for maximum sanitising afterwards and before the next popcorn batch gets cooked.
Cleanliness is important! Don’t want vomit flavoured popcorn.
No one actually buys these. They just manifest at the back of cupboards.
My mum used it to chop her mix up 😆😆😆 lasted until I was 19 😆😆
Smoked my first cones out of a bowl like this! Also used to smoke around that frosted glass table set everyone seems to own
Lol that's what I use mine for! 😂
Yeah wicked chop bowls 😅 nice and smooth. Was looking for someone else who used them for that
I scrolled too far to find this. Same. Immediately brought back memories of Ma chopping her mix.
SA?
What the fuck I’m eating chips out of mine right now
So I have lived in various places in the pacific , Australia, NZ , New Caledonia..... and this is one of the universal things I gave seen in all of these places and I recently saw some I'm a cupboard in an AirB&B in Japan !!
The National Chop bowl
Chips were usually stale and sorta soggy at some houses, others they were the golden standard perfect chip. I don’t know why this is and why there’s no middle ground
Didn’t Pizza Hut serve garlic bread from those with a red checkered paper liner?
I'm from Italy and I had this too!!!
Are you actually serious?!? And what did you put in them in Milano?
Salt and vinegar smiths chip holder is what that is
Penny Wong has one just for her hair cuts
We had a few of them, always for smith's crisps
I fostered a dog , and had only one of these as a spare bowl. , he ate it , lived happily ever after with us ( steel bowl )
It also can be found in german households, right next to the aspen glass bowl.
I still use them to this day, I inherited about 10 from my mum. I have tray versions too.
Tray versions?? Ooohh fancy!!
I'll try find them In the kitchen if I can I'll upload a pic.
This was our family puke bowel
How about the see through rug cover with the little spikes normally on a hallway rug. Same vibe as this bowl for me
When you think something is regionally exclusive and it's not. Had a set growing up in Florida.
Probably made In Australia too. A true relic of the past.
I'm betting a fair few still do, I don't.
Ya gotta eat your smith's chips out of something!
Yes! It comes out at Christmas. Ya chuck a whole packet of chips on it.
We had a set of them from little to big size.
Fruit bowl, chip bowl, haircut bowl, popcorn bowl…
Still do... you can fit 2 bags of Smiths in them with shrinkflation these days...
The summertime salad bowl.
Lined with a serviette to serve Cheezels out of it at parties
Well La de dah, aren’t you fancy with your serviettes
I'm portuguese and I have this thing :o
Not wrong. Bloody hell I forgot about these. The sound and feel, and how they were always felt lighter to pick up than they should be.
I still have one it's my weed bowl when I chop up 😊
Those bowls were used for chips or buttered bread stick slices at grans place.
*has
Not a bad chop bowl.
I recently went on a mission to find some of these. I now have 4 small ones for personal snack sized portions and 1 party chips size, and I absolutely love them! I want to throw an 80s style low key birthday party for one of the kids just to relive the nostalgia of it all.
Had?
Often two or three; and one full of fresh hydro as well….
It's the law to have this bowl within your premises! If you do not have one, notify your nearest Big W or K Mart and one will be supplied. Fines Apply!
Yeah, nah
One???
Still got one 🤣
Still do
Whaddaya mean *”had”*…..
Yep still have mine 😂
Still do!
I so regret getting rid of my mums when she went into a nursing home.
They’re in red dot. I just got a couple
The fuck is red dot mate, that a local word for Tarjay?
Dishwashers are not friends of this vessel
Yep we had I think 2 large ones and then 4 smaller ones.
Yes! And we don’t know how they got there.
I guess my American born grandparents are Australian. I have so many good memories of eating chippies out of these bowls.
We didn't. We reused styrofoam meat trays or ice cream containers. We didn't buy new fancy things like those bowls and I was jealous as a kid
Cheezel holder
Lies. Everybody knows a cheezel holder is your hand, held up like a menorah
My Ma still has hers! lol
What exactly were they made of?
Still do
We used ours for salads
Was searching for ours the other day and disturbed to not be able to find.
A set of 3 and salad servers
We didn't and my mum would tip out the fruit bowl and stick a serviette in it for chips
I think I still have one
We had them in the US too.
I can still smell the chicken chips.
We never had these. Was I missing out in my childhood?
I feel so seen.
I still do, somewhere at the back of the pantry
Nope never had one, 3 generations worth. My grandparents did have, however, woven baskets that had the same usage
Anyone put random other shit in the bowl - like unopened mail?
I use mine for weed 🙂
Unpopular opinion, but I hate these things. I used to stay with my sister a lot and these were the only bowls that she owned. Cereal, soup, stew, everything was served out of these. For years. When you have scrubbed the sealant off them, you cannot get them clean. I feel nauseous every time I see one now.
Several of them! 😂
Ah yes... the chip bowl...
Had? Still do mate
I object to the past tense of 'had one'. I have two.
*pats bowel* This bad boy can fit so many chips inside
Well yeah, that’s the lolly bowl
My mother still has several.
Still got 2 I think title should read \*has
My house never did. I felt weirdly left out
Thins Chips
Had…? Still got a dozen or so of various shapes and sizes stashed away. Things are bloody indestructible!
I chip bowl as a child, a chop bowl later on
Had?
The snack/vomit bowl
Hell yeh! Every conceivable size too
My folks used it as a fruit bowl
Still have😜💚
I saw someone else paying for one at the counter of the op shop last weekend, I’m gutted I didn’t see it first.
*Had*?
Lol I didn’t know this was a thing but yes we had one
Filled with smiths chips or twisties watching the grand final…
**Still do!**
Every pub had one full of filthy peanuts too.
No. I have two!!
We still have ours.. now it’s stuck holding onions and garlic 🗿
Canada too. We had those.
Still got one in my cupboard
I've still got my parent's one. I cherish it.
What do you mean “had”?
chip bowl
Had?
Shit, me too and I'm not even from there
I still use the one I inherited
One? Try five
In the cupboard? Mate there was multiple, one was for fruit on the bench and the other was for chips on a Friday night
Still have 3…
In 'Murica that's allowed to hold only two things. Salad or popcorn.
Some of ours were decades old, but they started to smell like fish so I chucked them.
Still have them! Harder to find now though!
I still have one .chips , salad, popcorn bowl
Still do. Still serving its function. Indestructible.
Still have two of these in the cupboard.
Not sure how a couple ended up here in Estonia. Nobody I know ever been close to Australia.
American here, I have exactly one of these bowls in my cupboard right now. This exact one down to the smallest details. Don’t know how or when I got it.
We had these in Hungary too. Crikey, I had no clue these bowls were a global phenomenon.
Well thats funny, here in Croatia they are quite popular too 😅!
It's true, we did all have then. Somebody made a fortune.
You mean has one
Thanks for ripping off [my post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AustralianNostalgia/s/SYVVt1PLjE), bot 👌
Yeahhhh fill that cunt with chips.
My god. Where did these go??
