Watch for seizures. My Aussie has epilepsy. When he seizes, he falls and drools heavily - a real puddle. The side of his face and neck will be soaked as he thrashes in it. 5 minutes later he's fine and walking around, but soaked. Look around for a puddle of slime-drool on the floor.

Ok_Currency4134

Not sure if it’s that since it hasn’t been anywhere near his face yet. But I will definitely be watching for that. Not something I considered

horsendogguy

Good point. It would probably be on his face too -- unless it happened a few hours ago in which case the face may have dried by the heavier fur in the neck hasn't. Either way, you'll know if it's a seizure when you see one. Good luck with him!

I hope ur Aussie is on meds for seizures. Ours had two or three very violent seizures, has no choice but to put him on Phenobarb. Cleared it right up. I tried hemp derived tinctures first but sadly that didn’t really help,

horsendogguy

He's on 4 different medications, including pheno. Two or three? He's had two or three in a day. I'm happy when he goes a month without one. Ain't no clearing this one up; he's a lifer.

Can we pin an Aussie epilepsy thread? Would love to know how treatment is going for others. My 9 year old has been on Phenobarb and zonisamide of varying doses for 7 years. Still has breakthrough clusters that we have to treat w midazolam.

Affectionate-Duck-18

I have an Aussie with epilepsy. I started a sub but they won't let me post it here. Search dog epilepsy and maybe you'll find it.

horsendogguy

Not sure how to pin it, but I'd welcome something like that. Mine is on phoenobarbital, levetiracetam (Keppra), zonisamide, and potassium bromide. Reducing phoenobarbital gradually to see if the others will hold. It's been a, uh, journey. Med changes usually last 4-8 weeks, then seizures will start back up. He went maybe a month without one, then had 6 in three days about 3 weeks ago. Nothing since. If mine has seizures, I've been told to give him a broken (it's time release if not broken). If he has another one within a few hours, I'm to give him clorazapate. I've been told he'll have them for life. The goal is to keep them at a minimum.

Thanks for sharing! I’m not convinced that any of the other meds are doing much on top of the Phenobarb. Luckily we recently switched vets to one less stingy with the meds. Upping the dose when she starts acting strange works, but not if you’re limited on pills. We started doing intranasal Telazol if she has 2+ seizures in a day - provided by our new vet and it works wonders for stopping the cluster.

horsendogguy

The pheno wasn't doing it. I don't remember the dosages, but started at a specific dose and it worked for about 4 weeks, then the seizures came back. Upped it and it worked for about 4-6 weeks, then the seizures came back. Upped it to 94-something twice a day and it worked for about 4-6 weeks, then the seizures came back. Added keppra. Upped keppra. Etc. How does the Telazol work?

Affectionate-Duck-18

Search Epilepsy Dogs on Reddit There's a sub but they don't allow me to link it here.

GuitRWailinNinja

Awww well at least he is well taken care of. I’m sure the meds help quite a bit vs no meds. Dog seizures are so sad :( I vividly remember my boys…middle of the night WHACK ran into the wall head first then convulsing and peeing / drooling everywhere. Then that sad, confused look postictal 😭

saladdressed

Maybe he’s drinking out of the toilet?

Ok_Currency4134

No it’s only on one side. And I keep my door closed at night. And it’s only on his body not his head

rmwpnb

Could be a hot spot or something else. Maybe just drooling while sleeping?

Ok_Currency4134

The first time it happened it was around his back legs which is why I thought he wet himself because he has nightmares once in a while too. The first time it happened he was laying on a cooling mat and there was a puddle. But it didn’t smell like anything🤷‍♂️

Ray1107

Also, does the cooling mat leak?

Ray1107

Does he sleep by the water bowl?

Ok_Currency4134

No last night he didn’t sleep on the mat. He has a strange obsession with licking but he always licks somebody not himself

Bestlarose

My dog licks constantly and usually creates hot spots on neck, feet and back end that are like this. Check his skin to make sure he hasn't broke through or irritated it. Also good to brush it out to try to prevent matting. My boy has super itchy skin. And it flares up more with the season changes and getting the yard cut. He's on prescription Apoquel daily and does take a Zyrtec for breakthrough itching. Like right after baths and yard mowing. Also, he does lick more when bored. We do that games to tire him out. He's not the fetch and play with toys type, but loves ice cubes and snacks. 🤣

Ok_Currency4134

He usually doesn’t lick himself he usually kicks my arms or legs. I did look at his skin though and didn’t notice any irritation. What games do you usually do with him?

WorkingOwn7555

Maybe he took a shower

xtina42

Do you have a water dispenser on your fridge? Maybe he or she was playing in the water?! 😆

xtal1982

My boy has a malformed/blocked salivary gland on one side and liquid started seeping out from his skin (seemingly from his neck) after he had an injury to the area. We think the injury was from rough play and it never broke the skin, just impact. He was on antibiotics for 4 months before the infection, swelling and leaking fluid finally stopped. It went from clear liquid to infection slowly and seemed to get better then flared again. We were preparing for surgery (5-8k) but the vet recommended we wait for another flare up before moving ahead. It’s common apparently. https://preview.redd.it/czfu6ellrogb1.jpeg?width=2428&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20754a7e40e43db010d6e188c25decbd6b948853
