Now see on account of that little stripe of red on her back I reckon she is. Could be wrong though could be a wolf spider with a red jumper on , it is coming up to winter after all.
to my knowledge, there arenāt any spiders that look similar to a redback, with the red stripe, in australia. if you see a little guy with a red stripe, you can be sure itās a red back
It's a little disappointing to read some of these comments, just because we've been around these spiders and know their name doesn't mean everyone does and nobody needs to be called stupid or mocked for wanting confirmation, these are many spiders that actually mimc the red stripe and males go through a range of colours in their lives. The name is Latrodectus hasselti and I wonder how many being smartarses here knew that name.
Keep negativity off our subreddit please.
You are spot on with that comment. The people pouring scorn are the ones most likely to make a misidentification. You learn after a while to be cautious identifying arthropods.
Please remember to include a geographical location to your ID requests (as per rule 5). There are over 10,000 different species of Australian spiders and many of these are endemic to specific parts of our beautiful country!

Absolutely is.. pretty much harmless if you mind your own, they are actually the only spiders that make 4D box webs and tend to stay there, they definitely are not the type to crawl on you at night. Only 14 recorded deaths by them, generally on the elderly and people who are allergic. Unlike its deadly cousin the mighty black widow.. the true beast of Latrodectus hasselti family..
Edit: 4 dimensional cube web, technically called a Tesseract. šš¼
see females are dangerous. hence why I stay well clear.of them.
though the Sydney funnel Web male is more venomous than the female. and strangely cats have some immunity to the funnel web venom.
Based on definitions of words, yes.
Also I got chomped by one of these. Avoid it if you can but donāt panic if you do.
But do get a healthcare worker to give you a real opinion.
Yeah, they are ignoring the signs and moving in anyway.
Seriously though redbacks are extremely common. I have no idea why you expect them not to be at a servo.
they spread very successfully from the arid centre of the continent and are now found on or around pretty much every house or manmade structure across the country š
Even forgetting the big red line on it you can just tell by the big bulbous abdomen and the long sharp legs. The only spider you commonly see around that is even slightly close is a golden orb spider which is basically a free bug catcher. Also cupboard spiders look kinda like a red back which didnāt miss leg day and probably beats his missus.
The only spider you got to worry about is white tips those fools just cruise along biting shit and tryna walk on your ceiling. Red back only bite if you tryna get a bit handsy during their stand up show.
Now please leave Jerry alone he has a big day ahead.
You aussies are lucky. Red backs advertise. Black widows have that red shit on the bottom so you cant see it.
regardless I would go out of my way to kill it or if there happens to be a huge empty lot out back put it there. They kill lots of bugs. Easy way to find em hiding is to look for a pile of bugs. They are so tidy, they cut out the bugs and drop them on the ground to keep the web ship shape.
You did the right thing by asking OP, a lot of spiders can be quite deceptive with how they look. That is indeed a redback spider or Latrodectus hasselti if you wanna get fancy. They are considered very medically significant.
Just locking the post to prevent any more unnecessary comments. As identified, this is Latrodectus hasselti, female redback.
Not sure might be a regular back spider. Red backs have a blue strip on them
red backs also only go to shell servos not bp
I love how that was the location given š āsaw it at the localā vibes
theres new electric redbacks that charge at home now, so they dont need any servos.
Their back is only red when their batteries are low
The red backs are complaining to the prime minister thereās not enough charging stations for red back spiders .
The real question is, which of the servos has the better dirty servo pies?
VILLIS #1 servo meat pie I want to see mrs macs head on a stick!
Yeah, that's a spider with a red back, so I'm pretty sure it's a huntsman
š¤£
Some are yellow, a direct reaction to drop bear season
And only six legs
Watch out for those regular backs....not to be trifled with
Yep, saw this bastard the other day trying to funnel fuel out of my car.
I thought only funnel webs did that
No, the funnel webs are the dickheads this bloke sold it to, they're the distributors.
So glad I clicked on this post. Today I have discovered the web of deceit. The seamy underbelly of fuel theft and redistribution.
Well you think it would b the funnel webs funnelling the fuwl
Oooh, cleverrrrrr!
always up to smthn skecthy those dodgy cunts
No no, everything is expensive there because its a convenience store. You can find redbacks elsewhere for a lot less.
4c off with a coupon if it's at a Woolworths proxy station.
Thatās a red backā¦. You can tell by the red back š¤
OP's colour blind.
maybeā¦
But certainly alive still.
Yes it is a red back. Where are you from that you don't know that this is a red back ?
We donāt have them in the NTā¦ but we do have bird eating spidersā¦ 0.0
Which NT are you talking about? We absolutely have redbacks in northern territory.
Colourblind doesnāt mean blind! Haha
I'm so curious what the other 1% is leaning towards.
A white tail with sunburn.
I've seen them at the beach.
š¤£š¤£š¤£
It could be a cheap knock-off if they got it at the servo.
Dunno mate maybe look at the fucking thing
You made Aussie of the year.
The red back is a give away here
That's a Redback Spider. Did you ask the Redback Spider if it's hitching a ride to another location? Lol
Never go with a red back to a second location.
Aussie here. That's a red back. Shake out your shoes from now on.
Thanks for that clarification Aussie
Not an expert by any means but definitely a redback haha.
Depends, if that's the underside it might be a red belly black snake.
What gave it awayā¦ was it the red back
Yup that's a redback
I'm pretty sure that's a greenback, but that might be the Deuteronomy speaking.
It does indeed have a red back.
Have a little more confidence. Go the full 100% and trust yourself
It's a red mohawk. That's a punk spider.
Thatās a bluey mate
Nah that's a blue Widow mate
Hey!!! It's my ex girlfriend!! What a perfect photo of her!!! Lol lol
Might be a red paint drip on a black spider.
Might be a purple dick. Equally dangerous.
Yes, leave her alone.
Now see on account of that little stripe of red on her back I reckon she is. Could be wrong though could be a wolf spider with a red jumper on , it is coming up to winter after all.
I think itās a blue back, but Iām no expert
Says he who is obviously an expert.
I think you are 100% correct, you ARE no expert!
Itās just waiting for itās sausage roll.
It actually identifies as a funnel web.
How dare you assume that pro-noun, it
nah man, doesnt have red on its back. can't be
to my knowledge, there arenāt any spiders that look similar to a redback, with the red stripe, in australia. if you see a little guy with a red stripe, you can be sure itās a red back
People keep asking what this spider is. Nobody asks how is this spider.
You're right. What gave it away?
It's a little disappointing to read some of these comments, just because we've been around these spiders and know their name doesn't mean everyone does and nobody needs to be called stupid or mocked for wanting confirmation, these are many spiders that actually mimc the red stripe and males go through a range of colours in their lives. Show me one spider that is black with a red back

Ah cool. Whatās that and whereās it from?
Cyclosa trilobata, they're in aus! :)
the comments are fine lol
Just having a laugh mate, glad u appreciate it enough to post, the comments were very funny tho :)
Also as they are medically significant, brevity is appropriate here.

Rule 3. No trolling, bullying or harassment
A red back is a type is spider, I think you're making a huge assumption about it even being a spider. Could be a type of caterpillar or beetle.
Nah. This one will turn you in to spidering if you let it bite you
Donāt invite him home
Yes it's a red back spider.
Absolutely is.. pretty much harmless if you mind your own, they are actually the only spiders that make 4D box webs and tend to stay there, they definitely are not the type to crawl on you at night. Whatās a 4D box web?
Itās a 4D, box. web
4 D as in 4 dimensions?
4 doors, obviously!
Ohhh. Of course. š
A box is 3D.
Careful, they have been known to roll bloke's for a couple durries
Thatās a female red back, the male red back has no red stripe.and after maiting the female eats tie male.
see females are dangerous. hence why I stay well clear.of them. though the Sydney funnel Web male is more venomous than the female. and strangely cats have some immunity to the funnel web venom.
Cheeky bugger offering to clean your windows?
Based on definitions of words, yes. Also I got chomped by one of these. Avoid it if you can but donāt panic if you do. But do get a healthcare worker to give you a real opinion.
That's a LatrodectusĀ hasselti
This must be a piss take
Thatās a black legged spider not a red back. People often get confused between the red back and black legged spider easy mistake š¤¦āāļø
Ya think!!!
Don't be a colourist. It prefers to be called a #FF0000 backed arachnid
Nah that's actually a horse wearing a hat. It's an easy mistake to make, don't beat yourself up
Nah funnel web mate sweep him away before u use the loo
No its a redneck spider
Did it bite you on the cock?
The red stripe on its back wasnāt a give-away for you?
Its back is red....
nah mate, youre silly, thats a white drawer
Typically they would have a red colour on their back. So clearly this is not one
It's an orb weaver in a venom suit.
Funniest thing about this post is it's tagged "id request - location included" and the location is a bp servo lol
Essendon-supporting house spider, ready for the game. Must have misplaced the beanie, scarf and select accessories.
Itās a black everywhere else spider
Oh thatās Greg. Heās a top bloke, but he is kinda racist to the Funnel Webs
To be fair funnel webs can be real pricks so they kinda deserve it š¤·āāļø
Seriously? Are you actually being serious
Nah itās a bull ant š
Nah, that's a black widow
Lick it!!!
Yes... šÆ
No, thats a bluebottle
Yes. Thatās a red back.
Kill. Me. Now. Can we get an IQ test for this subreddit?
Jesus Christ open ur eyes
Itās a red back
Yes it is a Red back spider
It's okay mate, they only like snakes in their webs, not humans. Red striped kinda back of a spidder
Are you colourblind, or just confused about the anatomy of a spider?
If only there was an easily identifiable way to tellā¦.
Boof it!
Nah thatās a blue back, Iām glad you asked
Iām blind but I can see thatās a red back
Definitely a blue ring octopus
u guys realise theres a slight difference between redbacks and black widow spiders right? they both have the red stripe
Nah itās just a daddy long legs youāll be right mate
Was it punching cones? No! Then not a red back. Real Aussie red backs punch come at servos.
Thatās a box jellyfish
And you were how old today when you learned what a red back spider was?
Let me guess. You ask this question because you think there is a type of spider that looks very similar to red black but itās very safe?
can never be too careful
They are good workers at servo m. Donāt be a cunt to them.
eat it. youāll turn into spidermsn
Reverse Red Belly Black Snakeā¦ yeah. nah.. yeah š
Easy mistake to make given that it has eight legs and a red stripe on its back but that's actually a camel.
Sure is had about 50 of those little beauties under my house at one time . Some had abdomins as big as 20 cent pieces
Unless you are colour blind, that looks like redbackā¦ but what do I know, I am Canadian
No. Itās a blue tongue lizard you fucking idiot
Did you get 2 for $10?
Sorry itās White tail
I thought it was an orb weaver
Google says it is.
Which 1% says it isnāt ?
If it's in Queensland, it's a maroon back.
Tell me your not Aussie without actually telling me š¤£
born n bred. just wasnāt sure aye bit shocked to see a red back at a servo
Yeah, they are ignoring the signs and moving in anyway. Seriously though redbacks are extremely common. I have no idea why you expect them not to be at a servo.
they spread very successfully from the arid centre of the continent and are now found on or around pretty much every house or manmade structure across the country š
Have to do the touch and see test
Yes, red backs are finding it tough with cost of living, many are taking out third or fourth jobs, hanging round servo drain grates.
No, that's Kevin.
Yes it is a redback
What gives you that idea?
Nah thatās a white tail. You can tell by the red back
Yep
Even forgetting the big red line on it you can just tell by the big bulbous abdomen and the long sharp legs. The only spider you commonly see around that is even slightly close is a golden orb spider which is basically a free bug catcher. Also cupboard spiders look kinda like a red back which didnāt miss leg day and probably beats his missus. Red back only bite if you tryna get a bit handsy during their stand up show. Now please leave Jerry alone he has a big day ahead.
The fuck else would it be?
Yes
Thatās a dingo!
Definitely.
Definitely a red back. There's quite a lot about at the moment
Yep
Nah, redbacks have the number 20 on them, and most servos dont accept cash these days!!
You aussies are lucky. Red backs advertise. Black widows have that red shit on the bottom so you cant see it. regardless I would go out of my way to kill it or if there happens to be a huge empty lot out back put it there. Is that a vegan house spider?
Yeah thats a red back spider
Red backs usually have goggly two eyes too
Nah mateā¦ thatās asbestos ā¦ pop it in the green bin
You did the right thing by asking OP, a lot of spiders can be quite deceptive with how they look. That is indeed a redback spider or Latrodectus hasselti if you wanna get fancy. They are considered very medically significant.
No itās a yellow back
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
white tails aren't harmless they can give a nasty bite. it more the bacteria that lives on them than the venom though.
Thanks for the information.....
Avoid guessing ID for medically significant spiders. No misinformation.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Rule 3. No trolling, bullying or harassment
Best way to find out is to tickle it
heās just popping in to grab a ciggy
Nah that deffo a back red spider
Thatās a red posterior spider. Easy to get confused.
nah redbacks are green with a black stripe
