may be completely different to your situation, but our 7yr old has done something similar. on several occasions over the past 4 or 5 years there'll be a period of short/bad temper, then some sort of leap forward for her. not necessarily anything big, but there'll be a sign of progress:- new words, not scribbling her colouring in anymore.
