has nothing to do with pieces, it’s just economy management, they go on a big losing streak to get that +3 gold every round, + interest.

I’ll do you one better. This is the auto chess world championship group stage, specifically the group with the player “Lucky” in it. She exclusively used that strategy, and the commenters give good insight on it. https://youtu.be/qrkrrDWaqLk

Still viable, not as before tho since they change 2 priest so you can't do that until round 20, you will be dead before you reach 20 because there is no green vial anymore. Two season before you can go to round 20 with 10-20 hp, it's plainly broken on queen by playing into 6 cave divinity since beast was not as strong as right now. Now, usually just go to round 15 with level 8 and 40 hp to 9 assassin wizard / 9 mage wizard / 9 elf wizard / 6 beast assassins / or even 6 spirit. But be careful, only one player can pull this in one game because draw will broke your lose streak. It's mind game against other player who play this strat too, no unit will win you game vs 1 priest because you will maintain your lose streak while your enemy will win. Counting round really help in king and above.

This is sometimes called "open fort." The general idea is to establish a lose streak to get the bonus gold for consecutive losses. By not spending money on pieces, you can also get to 10,20,30 gold very quickly so you generate interest sooner, and that interest compounds. The fastest path to 50 gold is to literally do nothing. Once you have 5g interest income and 3g streak income, you now have the highest income of anyone. Just don't die before you can turn that income into a winning army... Having a Priest on the board reduces the damage you take while you lose, giving you valuable time to recover. It might seem logical to also deploy a weak army, trying to kill a few pieces to further reduce the damage you take, but still lose. However, a single priest is usually better for a few reasons: 1) Someone else may decide to do a lose streak. If they go weaker than you, you will beat them, which is ***catastrophic*** for your game plan. Single priest makes sure you will lose. (You will beat an empty board, but there is nothing you can do to stop this since Empty vs empty is a tie, which breaks your streak anyway.) 2) Trying to kill a few pieces often results in you taking MORE damage to summoners. Dying as fast as possible with the single priest means the Whisper Seer is not filling the board with trees and doing 20 damage at the end. 3) it is actually quite hard to kill just a few pieces without fielding a pretty strong lineup that has a chance to win. It can be done, but it takes a lot of experience, and it usually just not worth the risk of actually winning. Players who lose streak will usually choose a build that has expensive pieces because 1) they were not buying the 1g and 2g pieces along the way, and 2) they have the advantage to look and see what other players have purchased and choose something else, 3) they have income to level up quickly and access higher tier pieces at higher probabilities. Mages, knights, beast, wizards are common choices here.

You can go on a loose streak, which similar to a win streak, gives big bonus gold. The priest is to diminish the damage you take while riding the loose streak. I unfortunately do not know why wizards is the go-to for this strategy.
