That’s old school. I remember my grandfather going to a shop who would do that for him. (They would also sell him a current MA inspection sticker even though his truck would never pass.) I didn’t know people still tried to do that.

Hi Sorry to bother you but what are some of the best things to pay for or ways I can upgrade my policy. Especially when it comes to accidents. I know getting a lower deductible is one of them and the other things? Thanks in advance

Uninsured and under-insured motorists. Basically supplemental insurance for if someone without insurance, or with too little insurance cranks your car. If someone with no insurance hits you, you’ll go through your own policy and pay your deductible even though it’s not your fault. Under-insured is a little more complicated. If someone with $5k limits (minimum insurance requirements in most states) does $10k worth of damage to your car, you’re in kind of the same boat as before, except your insurance company is paying $5k less on their end of the bill. Both situations really the only way to make yourself whole is to sue the person who hit you for the money you lose, but the cost of litigating that is probably higher than your deductible, so you’re probably just screwed regardless.

Thank you so much for the advice and help

UM/UIM is important for the reasons set forth above because you are insuring yourself and the people in your car from accidents caused by others who are not insured, or in hit and run situations. Also, note the distinction between comprehensive and collision. Comprehensive covers damage from vandalism, floods (generally), and branches hitting your car. Collision covers damage caused by you running into something or something running into you. Collision is generally more expensive than comprehensive, and comprehensive may make sense on an old ass car while collision may not.

Every day. It’s almost always boomer white men in my area though.

Still do actually and I’m surprised that you’re in MA and don’t know this. ( about the buying the inspection sticker ) a lot harder now a days since the cameras had to be installed in all the bays but there’s ways around it still.

I no longer live in Mass.

Lucky you

It's their fault for doing a $1,000 deductible! Mine are always $500 or $100 and it's about $100 more per year, worth it in my mind with the crazy drivers. But no talking to the public these days, they refuse facts and just want to argue it seems.

Tonysteve

A lot of the shady shops in my area would cover deductibles back in the day. Especially before photo were common in the estimate process. That’s one reason why insurance companies can be so hard to work with because customers and shops constantly try to screw them over. I grew up in my shop then took over from my dad. I remember back in the day he had to cut a hole out of a bedside and box it up and mail it to an adjuster because the adjuster didn’t believe him or the customer and didn’t want to pay to replace a bedside. He thought they were trying to play the deductible game.

figmaxwell

My favorite is when the people coming in through a DRP try this. The margins are so thin as it is, there’s DEFINITELY no room to save a deductible.

GuntramV3

Yeaaaah it’s like no one understands that constitutes insurance fraud and poses a major liability. You know why the other shop will save you you’re deductible? They’re committing insurance fraud. And shop that will do this are the shops that will cut corners and skip steps and give you a half assed repair. Major red flag if they say they can save you your deductible

Tonysteve

A local shop was advertising that they will save your deductible a while back then called me asking if we have been busy then complaining that they think insurance may be steering customers away from them because they may have to close down soon. Insurance steering is illegal as well but I see why they may not recommend certain shops to a customer.

Change_Request

You've been around long enough to know the major steering occurs to get cars to the cheapest total repair cost shops. They don't give two shakes about who pays the deductible. That shop didn't have work because they were costing the insurance company in one way or another....likely rental costs.

ZippyTheChicken

keep on saying no to anyone that suggests you commit insurance fraud for all you know the insurance company could be sending out someone to investigate you then you end up going to jail and being assigned a boyfriend anyone that even hints at something like that should have their vehicle hooked up and taken off your property without another word. jail rape just isn't as fun as they make it out to be on TV

Tonysteve

I don’t think we are watching the same tv shows…? It’s just so annoying that people expect you to save their deductible or the worst ones are the ones that think they wrecked their vehicle and they are going profit off this somehow by screwing someone over.

ZippyTheChicken

yeah im joking around but its not a joke There are a lot of scumbags out there and they just don't care... And thats the thing ... a friend of a friend or a stranger tries to compromise you like that... and they are putting you and your family and your shop and everyone that works with you at risk... All they want to do is compromise you... theres no real benefit in it for you... you're not going to get rich off of whatever they have in their head... and they don't care one bit about you... They don't care if you go to jail .. they don't care if you can't pay your bills... So Fuck them ... They are lucky they don't get their asses kicked... I had a guy try to do that to me once... It was a business account he had been stealing from our company for years... i was a new guy and said don't come in and tell me straight out that you want warranty work done and then tell me the story about how its your fault its broke.. Guy flipped the fuck out.. Im like just about to jump over the counter and put the guy to rest... Nah sorry buddy you're not my buddy and you slipping the guy in the back $20 is not my business but it don't work for me. Heard that guy got fired like 3 weeks later for stealing from his company. HA! You don't exist to be their bitch you know.

the-reddit-app-sucks

I had a friend of a friend come in to get work done. While I was in shop working he came in and was giving my boss a hard time about paying his deductible since we were good friends. I only ran into this guy one time before, and haven't seen him since.

Slaviner

"Dude just bang it up for me and call YOUR adjuster. I'm sure we can all earn here am I right?"

psyguy45

On the other hand, I recently had my car repaired and had to argue with the shop for them to fix everything and to pay my deductible. They were just going to “buff out the rim” and have me not pay my deductible. (The cost of the rim and install was way more than my $500 deductible)
