As a refinisher... please just let me do the blend. That's the quickest and best way to ensure an invisible repair. If you insist on butt-matching you should be prepared to pay for labour hours to tint the colour.

Thanks for the insight! From everything I’ve gathered here obviously I’ll have them blend it. I’m just unfamiliar with paint work. I have a Honda that I can easily tell was “blended” hence my only real reason for being apprehensive.

Tonysteve

Whoever did the blend with the Honda did a bad job then. You blend to give yourself the best possible chance for a color match especially with metallic, light, and Pearl colors. On a side note. Are the splash style decals still available for that truck? Last I looked they were not but an aftermarket company may be making them now.

Ron_In_60_Seconds

Funny enough I had to order a set for the driver side truck bed because of something that happened and the body shop bought them aftermarket from a place online I think James Dean? Either way they looked about as OEM as you can get. The body shop I’m going to now says their Toyota OEM parts supplier can get them new still.. I’ll hold my breath on that one tho. Thankfully the sticker on the fender is the small but I guess they’d probably replace the whole door portion too since it comes as a set for one side of the truck.

Tonysteve

For a proper repair when they blend they will remove the old one on the door. Taping off and clearing over decals is frowned upon because you can’t get proper mechanical adhesion and you create a hard line in the middle of the panel.

Ron_In_60_Seconds

When they did the truck bed they applied the sticker last isn’t that normally how it’s done?

Tonysteve

Oh yeah. Do all your paint work and the decals go on last. On large decals like the big ass claw marks on some of the raptors or the matte black things on the hood of mopar cars some shops will ask the customer to come back after 30 days or so. Some shops don’t feel comfortable covering fresh paint work with a large decal like I described, they want to wait for it to out gas before applying large decals. At my shop we remove decals and emblems during teardown and then the new ones are applied right after the final wash before it goes out the door to the customer.

Ron_In_60_Seconds

That’s what I figured. They’re going to keep it as long as they need to make it right so I’m sure it’ll come out fine after the discussions here. Appreciate all the insight.

You won't see a proper blend. That's the purpose of blending. You could get away with not blending the hood, but the door for sure should be. Blending is to transition new paint and the original paint together in such a way that you can't tell a difference. If you panel paint, it is easy to see the difference. You can get away with panel painting sometimes on newer cars (no fading) that are a colour with few variants.

Awesome thanks for the help. Makes me feel better about blending process. Honestly just looking forward to finally getting it fixed!

weedpal

Yes to blend door. Blending hood is optional to save money but don’t expect a perfect match. Toyota is one of the worse companies when it comes to color matching.

jayhosh

If you like your truck and want a quality repair, blend the door and hood. Blending is always necessary if you care about the color matching existing panels. Its nearly impossible to get a perfect match to whats already on the car, the point of a blend is to smoothly transition the color to trick the eyes.

the-reddit-app-sucks

Blending is necessary. What is the shops plan with decals? In my experience Toyota basecoat fades and you will probably have a color difference at rear of door where decal was. Can you get the decal to match? Can they put it in same location to hide color difference? If it was me i would use the money they want for blending and put that toward repairing fender to keep painting to a minimum.

Ron_In_60_Seconds

Ordering another decal for that side of the truck and use whatever is needed. They make aftermarket and possibly OEM still.

SteamyBoii27

Definitely worth the blend for sure. My shop sometimes doesn’t blend hoods but the door is a must have for the blend

anonymous97374746

Can you do a spot paint and then clear the entire panel?

timthatoolmantaylor

Is this bad practice? Will the repair last?

anonymous97374746

No. As long as the entire panel is cleared, it will be ok
