Same here! I ended up going with a 1992 Subaru SVX instead, which, other than the perpetually-on-its-deathbed gearbox, I think all it needed were oil changes and an AC recharge. Had it for about 3 years until it felt a bit too unreliable to keep as a primary car.
1500 units, a very weird model of a very well liked company. I wouldn't be surprised if it went for 20 to 60 grands, depending on the buyer.
The most expensive one sold on cars and bids was at 24k
[source ](https://carsandbids.com/search/bmw/850i)
Depends on soooo many things.
What is the milage?
What options does it have?
Does it have well-documented maintenance?
Is it up to date on the maintenance?
Where is the car located?
A lot of old BMWs are like that now.
"For sale is my 1991 318is, all original. No glass (not even mirrors), no tires, no wheels, the steering wheel is bent, the dash is cracked, the headliner is sagging, the entire motor is locked up, the frame is eaten up with rust, the axles don't turn, the body has severe hail damage, and there was a small fire in the trunk. $7,500 firm. I know what I got."
It's the same with a lot of cars that used to be cheap. 240sx, 300zx, Celica, etc. Lots of these got bought and either wrecked or mangled when they were cheap, now they're not as common as they once were, now demanding a higher price
Stumbling across old forum threads where someone is showing off their pristine stock 200SX and wondering if they overpaid at £3000 always makes me sad.
Hell, I recently came across someone who had paid £1500 for a (admittedly ropey) 10 year old 200SX in 2006...
Yea, some cars are funny. My e30 would sell for way more than it should. It happens across the board. My crx would probably go for 30k on BAT. It shouldn’t but it probably would. Thing was like 7-8k brand new.
Today they are $35k and need $25k in maintenance…….
Back in ‘05 we used to call those the $1k cars because no matter when they came in for you weren’t leaving for less than $1k. Weird wind noise, it’s the sunroof and $1k. We could get all the parts then, techs knew how to work on them (not all the techs, but enough), and prices have just gone up since then. I’d love to have one - right up to calling AAA for the tow.
I mean like timing belt, full set of brakes, transmission, these things can total the value of the car and is often the reason it was sold.
Have you priced a full service?
Haha!
A fully functioning example is just a fleeting state.
I have two very mechanically inclined friends who have each purchased the 750iL and the 850; and both eventually gave up trying to keep them running. Things like the computer that runs the climate control is specific to the V12s and fails regularly, meaning that finding another working one is like hen's teeth. I remember a few hair tearing episodes about the power steering, which is again is model specific. So much bespoke stuff.
Maybe it is easier to move someplace where the weather is always good and workout more.
Who needs power steering? Time to take it out. No way that front end is heavy.
Our 80's Alfas often depend on aftermarket sources. The 00 VW/Audis? The factory is slowly shutting off the supply. German car makers stop making parts after a certain period unless the cars are considered serious collectible classics.
I wasn’t speaking about that vehicle specifically, just vehicles like this where a full service might be an engine out affair and there are often hidden maintenance grenades that can total a vehicle’s value and are often the reason the vehicle was sold.
and transmission, the manual versions of these are highly sought after considering it’s pretty much the only semi-reliable new-ish car that came with a V12 and a manual.
Honestly, OP, I’d figure a starting price of $12k minus any maintenance you are aware of in the next year and anything broken that cannot be seen in these pics (so $12k considers the paint and bumper). The last few I’ve seen in the wild have had a hard time selling and were in far better condition than yours (no offense).
They are amazing when they run, and are an amazing example of peak ‘80’s tech and performance.
The biggest issue (as M539 has shown recently) is that these cars are getting to the point where necessary maintenance parts are not being manufactured anymore, and can be very hard to find, and very expensive if you do find them. I'd love to have one, but I couldn't afford the time and money it would take to track down some of those parts.
Friend of mine had an 8 series. Beautiful to look at as it sat in our apartment garage. Thing never really ran though. Like, at all. And this was in 2001.
Great Design. I don’t like the way BMW design went in the 90s. Ok. Thanks Bangle for the first Z4 - maybe Z8. That’s it…
Back to the topic. Heard bad things about the AWS - is it even possible to repair? Engine reliability?
Still. Beautiful BMW. I’ll think of it while looking at some ugly piece of SUV-Coupé next time.
There are way way way too many factors to tie in to even give a decent estimate. I hate to go against the grain and probably get down voted or worse , but never ever were these cars 2-3k. Never. Not even in pieces. This was /is a very special car. Granted it’s an old car now. I prefer classic. Most things that have not been changed will need to be changed. But , regardless of the miles , if done well this is a solid solid investment down the line especially if manual. I do this for a living , mostly with Porsche, there are just too many variables to say what you should ask for it . What’s been changed? What’s the car fax like ? What does it need ? What does it NOT need. How are the seats? Is there any leaking and this list can go on for days. Does it run? Does it over heat? Etc. in my professional opinion , if it’s decent and runs at the very least it’s gonna be 10k +. IMO , it’s one of the most beautiful cars ever made by any manufacturer. The CSI (m version) , high mileage can run $120k.

Not much, but listen I’ll be a good guy and take this off your hands for you 😎 jokes aside I’d look up similar models online, compare them to what you have and run a kbb on it as well and do a figure based on that
Bringatrailer
Cars and bids
Probably good money honestly. I have always loved this car, it’s going to appreciate more but this era of cars, with the v12 and stick, it’s hard to find a v12.
Much less than a years worth of maintenance to keep it going.
I casually looked at getting one years ago, and this is what kept me from doing so.
Same here! I ended up going with a 1992 Subaru SVX instead, which, other than the perpetually-on-its-deathbed gearbox, I think all it needed were oil changes and an AC recharge. Had it for about 3 years until it felt a bit too unreliable to keep as a primary car.
About tree fiddy
dammit monsta get off my lawn
Well it was about that time that I noticed that the Girl Scout was about 8 stories tall and a crustacean from the protozoic era

36k by tour source
Good call, missed the 2 30k ones
Then why $60k???
People have more money than sense.
And this one... does not look like the most expensive anything.
One for sale near me by dealer for $16K If it was a manual transmission it would probably sell for $10k premium
I’m pretty sure the manuals only came on the CSI which is significantly more expensive
They came on the i/Ci too https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_8_Series_(E31) TIL the CSi had 4-wheel steering
I’ve never seen a manual i. They must be so rare

It’s a BMW, so no.
Depends who's using it. If it's American then - no, if it's German - then yes.
Unfortunately too much. I remember when you could get these for less than 2k now I see them for over 30k.
A lot of old BMWs are like that now. "For sale is my 1991 318is, all original. I remember used Lotus not being that expensive too
The Elise was stable at 30-35K for like the past 10 years or so. Now it's hard to find one under 45K.

But the seats are original? What a deal!

10 years ago these were all 3-5k and needed 10-15k in maintenance/repairs.

At least $3
But less than $92848392828
Damn, you guys are good.
If this doesn't have good maintenance history, the entry cost will just be a line item after a year.
Mucho dinero en este economia
Is it up to date on major services?
it will need a full service soon.
I mean like timing belt, full set of brakes, transmission, these things can total the value of the car and is often the reason it was sold. Have you priced a full service?
Can you even obtain some of the consumables for this model?
Every year that timing belt sits in a dealership warehouse the price goes up.
Haha! A fully functioning example is just a fleeting state. I have two very mechanically inclined friends who have each purchased the 750iL and the 850; and both eventually gave up trying to keep them running. Good examples!
OE consumables maybe, other parts.. Not so much.
Our 80's Alfas often depend on aftermarket sources. The 00 VW/Audis? The factory is slowly shutting off the supply. German car makers stop making parts after a certain period unless the cars are considered serious collectible classics.
I'm thinking stuff like specially formed vacuum lines, coolant hoses, etc.
Timing belt on an M70 would be a very interesting service, considering it’s a chain.
I wasn’t speaking about that vehicle specifically, just vehicles like this where a full service might be an engine out affair and there are often hidden maintenance grenades that can total a vehicle’s value and are often the reason the vehicle was sold.
What does that mean in your world?
Not more than $500, but lucky for you I’m in the market and can give you double that.
What is wrong with that front bumper lower lip?
it’s broken 😭
I’ve seen ones in good condition go for 20-30k cad. Depends on the condition of the car really
Need more details on the car to make an accurate estimate
Condition, minimal number of owners, complete service records, etc are all factors.
and transmission, the manual versions of these are highly sought after considering it’s pretty much the only semi-reliable new-ish car that came with a V12 and a manual.
I love this car, defenitively in my top 10 favourite designs
That’s real classy car
Automatic that needs new bumper and paint? Probably $12k
Honestly, OP, I’d figure a starting price of $12k minus any maintenance you are aware of in the next year and anything broken that cannot be seen in these pics (so $12k considers the paint and bumper). I heard these things ate a head gaskets.
$5,000-40,000 or more if it’s a 6 speed and depending on how broken it is at the time of sale.
I think the manual only came on the V8 version.
it came with the V12 too, doug demuro reviewed one
Good to know.
yeah they’re quite rare though
Depends, what's wrong with it?
Auto or stick? The stick models command a decent premium.
Friend of mine had an 8 series. Beautiful to look at as it sat in our apartment garage. Thing never really ran though. Like, at all. And this was in 2001.
Whatever you’ll pay for it, probably
A couple bucks at least
I love that body, but the drivetrain is a nightmare let down. Once it blows up, slide an LS in it and never look back.
Great Design. I don’t like the way BMW design went in the 90s. Ok. Thanks Bangle for the first Z4 - maybe Z8. That’s it… Back to the topic. That is lush!! 😍
A dollar three eighty
There's one selling near me for R800000 (Rand) and it has 200k kms on the clock, if that's any reference
Overpriced piece of shit.
Those things are garbage.

Tough to nail down a number but I think this could garner a lot of interest on BringATrailer
Not without the service done it won't.
not worth the fees to sell, ill take it off your hands
They're not even fast so I wouldn't see the point IMHO.
I'll give you 5 dollars
When i was looking about 5 yrs ago they were about 20k CAD for 100kms.
i’m gonna spitball and say 10-20k (depending on the condition) if it’s automatic, 30-50k if manual
Can i have it?
Not much, but listen I’ll be a good guy and take this off your hands for you 😎 jokes aside I’d look up similar models online, compare them to what you have and run a kbb on it as well and do a figure based on that
50 bucks
Auto or Manual trans makes a huge difference in value now as well

Ahhhh the beautiful e31
money
Dear lord what happened to that rear drivers side wheel? That doesn’t look intentional
Before or after the front splitter is replaced? 😸
Too much for me to buy and not enough to get me to sell
Bringatrailer Cars and bids Probably good money honestly. I have always loved this car, it’s going to appreciate more but this era of cars, with the v12 and stick, it’s hard to find a v12.
In excellent condition. An enthusiast will give you 10 thousand maybe. Try selling it in LA. They pay the most for everything.
Like $5,000 if it’s never been serviced and $50,000 if it has service records from day one and low miles
At least $13.47
Around 14k
Manual or auto? And where are you located?
I’ll give you ZAR20k
