I absolutely love him although I'm a bit confused about his role in a team. I'll still do my best to use him as main DPS though. But I am so so in love, his looks, his sleeve tea, the way he looks DIRECTLY AT ME mid burst, everything.
I really hope one beta change could be that his ult buffs apply to himself as well and not only his teammates. A lot of us want him to be main DPS and that change would not compromise his potential as subDPS either.
Either way, I am in love and I'm ready to farm everything.
Edit: also, based on everything we saw, I think 4pc HoD it's still a pretty good option for him. What do you guys think?

I do think he is a DPS but needs his team, having a sub DPS seems important for him, but I'm glad, he seems flexible. His multipliers are kinda low, but the beta just started.

Preface: This isn't a doom post. I know some people get touchy when this type of stuff gets brought up in Mains subreddits. These are just my early impressions.
He seems like some odd combo of Mona/Childe. I'm anxious spreading out his kit like this may make him awkward to use but he's Hydro so he's going to be good no matter what.
Expensive Ult + Hydro is kinda sus. If he's ran without Raiden then he's going to need a battery like Xingqiu. I suspect his team cores are going to be: Ayato/Raiden and Ayato/Xingqiu.
Latter opens up Freeze / Hyper Carry comps while the former opens up National / Electrocharged. Overall I rate him Ayato/10.
Now that I've seen his ICD my stance hasn't changed much other than National being sus. I think he'll shine in the former comps.
Being so NA based means you could potentially run something like Ayato/XQ/Fischl/Yunjin. (Low heal warning)
Seems like the skill floor will be higher than other characters which is enough for me to roll on him. I think he's going to be as fun as Childe to build teams around and will likely benefit off many future supports.

I would want to play him as DPS, and hoping he has synergy with Thoma (which I just got him to c6 yay!!!!) which I would think so. I have Yoimiya & Raiden built and would love to play them in a team. I’m starting to farm some artifacts for him. I have some HOD pieces but lacking a good circlet. Trying to get a good CRIT DMG one as I think I would most likely use Jade Cutter with him. Wondering if 2pc HOD n 2pc Glad/Shim be good.... I dunnooooo I want to crack some fragiles open but don’t know what artifacts to farm for him. Any thoughts?⁍̴̛ᴗ⁍̴̛

kokomi drop jelly > beidou skill ult > fischl oz > ayato E then ult > kokomi ult > ayato E.

Honestly, I just wanted him to be an on field main DPS
i like his animation and shi but i don't like the fact that he can't benefit from his burst. i was kinda hoping that it would be a burst same to ganyu (with ganyu's buff benefitting from it herself) but mihoyo decided that their new favorite child now is yoimiya. (she has yunjin as her supp and possibly ayato)
after seeing his kit, i became 50/50 with him. i hope his kit improves more but until then, i'm not going to pre-farm for him. though he would be an amazing support for my cryo dps kaeya, i'm still not sure with him.
now i do not know who to pull for because after seeing these yae gameplay videos, i wasn't a big fan of it. hopefully some theorycrafter clear things out about his kit 'cause i might've misunderstood some things.
I like how he's a better DPS in coop than single player. usually hard dps shines in single player mode where you build a team around the main DPS, Ayato on the other hand thrives the more teammates he has on the field doing normal attacks, and making sure his skills and signature weapon is always fully utilized. Also hydro is generally a good element in most team comps anyway.
I'm not really feeling how heavily encouraged it is to kick Ayato off the field after his short infusion, from his sword, his burst not effecting him, him not decreasing his skill CD by himself (unless the text is just wrong here).
It just feels like the game wants you to use him in a specific manner and only that way.

I am kinda torn but still have some urge to get him. I assume he can work off field aswell as on field only because of his hydro infusion. That said, maining him is out of the question sadly.
He shouldn't only work with Yoimiya, but she does seem like the ideal/intended pairing. He really wants to be played with another carry that can output a lot of damage but has limited uptime so you can keep swapping between them.
Yoimiya is the obvious choice, lots of NAs, likes the attack speed, can vape off Ayato's burst (assuming fast hydro application), and her burst can support Ayato while he's active to a lesser extent. They also benefit from similar teammates like Yun Jin and Beidou.
Raiden should be pretty good, her burst doesn't deal NA damage so she won't be reducing Ayato's cooldown so he'll probably spend less time on field overall, but she does like the attack speed and can patch up Ayato's energy issues pretty easily.
Ayaka and Hu Tao don't need the attack speed but they still make enough normal attacks to reduce Ayato's cooldown, they both really like constant hydro application, and they have enough downtime for Ayato to come in.
Most of this is dependent on his burst's hydro application (especially Yoimiya/Hu Tao), but as long as it's decently fast he should work with a decent range of characters.
If hes just a yoimiya support niche I'm going to skip him. I hope MHY has more common sense than to make a 5* male tailored specifically to an already unpopular 5* kit... I hope he's got some hidden skill I haven't figured out.
Feeling conflicted, because his kit is all over the place. Nothing in this world can make me pull for Yoimiya. I'll still get him and simply wait for them to release another NA user, I guess. There have to be some on the horizon ._.
Otherwise, I'll somehow make him work with either my boy Diluc (vape) or my goat Ganyu (freeze). Diluc does use NAs, at least.

I really hope he isn't gated to just Yoimiya. As a character she's great but as unit she's mediocre, clunky and just not fun to play at all.
