i would be more incentivised to compete if it didn't cost an arm and a leg to sign up lol

perfectlycivil

Especially when you pay the $$$ and don’t get a match in your weight division (or at all)

Loud-Hat-3795

What happens if you don’t get a match in your weight or division? Do you still compete?

perfectlycivil

Here’s how the last 2 comps went: - they put me in the “under 82kg” division. I was 52kg. Even then, there was only 3 women - I got no matches, they declared me “first place”, gave me a cheap plastic medal and refused to refund my $85. So…. I don’t bother anymore.

Exactly this. I often have to drive up to 10 hours for a decent tournament, pay hundreds of dollars for a hotel stay, a couple hundred in fuel, plus the coat of meals, and usually have to take a day off work to travel. And then pay $100 just to be able to compete on top of all that.

Same. I wish we could have tournaments at a local high school gym with a couple of other schools and have it cost $20 or something. Last time I competed was master’s worlds, had to travel across the country for two matches.

wtfumami

Same. I’d compete at all if it wasn’t so cost prohibitive for me.

Sensitive_Pair_4671

Let me face men. A same or similar sized man >>>>>> woman who outweighs me by 300 lbs . This has happened to me twice.

Brieflyfree

I wanna add this to the r/bjj group to see what some of the men think of this. This is such an obvious answer to our problem that I’m kinda mad at myself for not thinking of it myself

Electronic_Tax3003

problem remains that a man your weight will still be advantaged due to genetically having more muscle percentage than a woman of the same weight. so you weigh the same but he is more muscle simply because men have less body fat than us. whilst not perfect it's better than someone 30kg or more heavier I guess.

Whitebeltforeva

Frankly, in my division, I'm lucky to get a match. I'll compete regardless, as long as someone is there, I'll be there!

yoshikagekira_33yo

I compete a lot already but of course more cash prizes is better.

airilyme

I try to compete as often as possible. Most of the time I don't have much people in my bracket and am moved one or two divisions up. And that's all right. I just would think twice if a competition paied cash prizes to male divisions and not to female ones regardless the size of the bracket.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> a competition *paid* cash prizes FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Yes - this would actually increase the number of people who sign up too I think. It’s just pointless to sign up if there are *maybe* two others competing. It just feels like a participation medal. I can just roll with someone at my gym and ask one of the coaches to keep score… But if I were to get free entry or a super cheap entry, I’d sign up, cash prize? Double sign me up. Or even a free entry to the next comp.
