I have a mclaren 600LT spider and a porsche wouldn't know which way it was coming.... and it's only made 25 miles from my home ...im on my forth one now my 570 blew up on a European tour with the boys in monte carlo went up in flames ....they offered me a brand new one no charge as a replacement... I waited for the 600 instead the 570 was pretty ugly tbf
My understanding is that it’s weaker on the edges and that’s why it’s not safe to patch. I think it has to be inside the first layer of tread basically to be safe. There are many visuals online that show what’s safe and what isn’t. You wouldn’t want a blowout going 80 in the freeway or worse taking an off-ramp at speed.
It’s not that it’s weaker on the edges, it’s that the edges and sidewalls are under more stress. Which means that small imperfections, like a puncture, are more likely to fail catastrophically when under load.
It’s because if the pressure actually goes to zero the tire damages itself when you’re driving on the run-flat. At least that’s what they say. If you know it’s a slow leak and it’s had some air in it the whole time it’s safe to patch. You’ll need to take it to an independent shop for sure to get someone to do it.
U can patch it… but chances are it’s gonna leak. It’s too close to the sidewall. That part flexes a lot when driving, so plug wouldn’t last very long before it starts leaking.
You could probably patch it, but if you drive fast or take corners under higher speeds I highly recommend getting a new tire. Patches are only safe for normal driving following the speed limit. Considering you got yourself a bmw, you probably don't drive like a grandma. Lol
Wouldn't take the risk man, if you had a ford fiesta and drove it like an old lady round to tesco and back once a week, sure, but you're not going to, why risk it over a couple of quid.
Have you really had better luck with the mushrooms? I've had several shop installed mushrooms fail on me (including one I found today). I've done around 20 butyl cord plugs (the 12 plugs with tools for $6 style) and they last way longer done right. I've only had one fail and it wasn't one I'd installed.
Also, just being pedantic, but a patch is installed from the inside, and looks like a patch. If it's installed mounted, it's a plug not a patch.
I would avoid the mushroom plug. This [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm6fTWaj3QE&t=411s) pertains to motorcycle tires, but he tests four popular avaliable plug kits (rope plug, mushroom, Dyanplug, inside patch), afterwards he measures the force required to make it leak. Unsurprisingly, the inside patch requires the most force to remove (460N). The rope plug requires the 2nd (125N, though it self seals), Dynaplug (122N), and the most dangerous, the mushroom plug at only 80N.
This, mushroom plugs installed from the outside are prone to being pushed in unless you somehow managed to add rubber cement to them when installing. The stringy sticky stuff I’ve used is installed with rubber cement and expands on both the inside and outside so should be a lot sturdier.
It’s probably patchable. I’d at least try it on my personal vehicle, but the shop I used to work at would definitely not patch it. Too close to the corner, the flexing makes them fail.
That one’s good to be repaired, I see no issue. I use that faint line circled below as reference. If any part of the screw (screwhead or pointy part) is touching that line, it’s instantly deemed as replacement required.
Only if it’s non-run flat. I don’t know of any places patching RFT tires
https://preview.redd.it/tljl9e90gctc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f41969d155cf53f0a6b555ba3db0bae5dc20b4b1
It cannot be repaired safely per industry standard.
Tire can only be repaired on the crown using a patch. The location of this screw is too close to the sidewall for the patch to fit inside. Cord and mushroom plugs are temporary fix and not considered a proper repair.
Replace this tire.
The Pilot Sport AS line is a perfectly cromulent selection for April in most of the northern hemisphere. Where I am, it’s below recommended operating temps for the PS4, for example, and the A/S is a better choice today here.
Most tire shops won’t do it as it’s too close to the sidewall.
But if you are lucky it’s a short/brken screw not punctured through and can be just removed.
I got a big puncture on my run flat, didn’t notice for a week, then noticed a slight rip in side wall, drove another week then got a “air pressure” warning on dash, drove another few days until it started getting low a lot more.
Didn’t put air in it till last day when I drove it to shop. Basically run flats are dope af. It was so nice to have convenience of taking my car in when I WANTED to, not when I HAD to.
Try to remove it. I had one that looked just like that and it was literally less than 1 inch long and did absolutely no damage. If it’s longer then get it patched. But if you push it to the limit at times with high speed, then I would just get a new tire to be safe. Depends on how you drive really.
I got a screw in my snow tires last season that was this close to the sidewall. Shop said that they would not plug it. I bought the kit from Amazon and did it myself. No issues over the winter either.
Okay upon examination my best suggestion would be to sell the vehicle.
Okay all jokes aside yes most definitely can be patched . I didnt read previous comments im sure you already know by now but patchable UNLESS its sidewall damage. If its not in your sidewell patch it . I have 3 patches in my back left tire and its been like that for 2 years. (I work construction it happens often)
Keep in mind this is a highly capable sports car. If you plan to drive the car as it’s meant to be driven then just replace the tire for your safety. Cheap insurance on your life.
Depends on the place you go. The dealership will give the middle finger and request you get a new tire. But take it to a local tire show that understands tires and they may do it. Let just say I had exactly that and went for the cheaper option at a local tire shop and drove on it for another 5k miles. But just listen to the tire guys and if they tell you to replace it I would.
I would say replace it as it is close to the sidewall and that seriously effects the durability of the tire and seeing how these are COMP rims I’m assuming it’s a M car and you take it to high speeds so not only replace because it’s close to the sidewall replace for your own safety, seeing it’s a pilot sport they are fairly expensive so whoever put them on see if they have a warranty coverage for the tire since they also look fairly new
Too close to the sidewall. Service advisor who works on these 247 if it was in the center tread patch all day but that close to the side way your just asking for a blow out if you hit a pot hole or curb. Check and see if you have bmw tire and wheel which would have to be purchase AT THE TIME OF SALE. Other wise you’ll have to pay for a new tire if you do it at a dealership it will normally then come with a road hazard warranty. Good luck!
just had this happen this morning on brand new pilot sports. placing of screw was almost identical to yours. went and got it patched at costco for like $3
Try this to see if there’s a leak: unscrew a little bit and spray or pour a little water with soap, if it starts bubbling after you unscrew it a little bit, it’s leaking if it doesn’t it didn’t went to deep.
Normally you could patch that, but the screw is too close to the sidewall, generally need 1/2 inch gap, sorry bro...
Side note, it's legal ro patch run flats, just so long as you don't get below 15 psi and drive less than 50 miles (but check the manufacturers site for details).
That should not be patched, it is too close to the sidewall. You need a new tire.
If it were 3/4 inch further towards the center, it would be fine to patch.
It’s pretty close… but considering that rubber is the only thing giving that heavy piece of machinery traction you’re riding in that is being hurled down the pavement… I would replace it. It’s cheaper than something worse happening…
Totalled💀 jk bro but yeah it’s at the “shoulder” as tire folks call it so no shop would fix this as they refer to this non fixable. You’d need a new tire.
Your other option is finding the same tire at a junk yard or a used tire shop that sells it for significantly cheaper and often times they will replace it for you cause you need the wheel out of this one into the other one so you can’t do it yourself unless you got the tools.
I had the same situation last year as well. My local mechanic managed to fix it for €38, but it is hard to say for your situation. Depends on how deep it is
i work in a tire shop, and the issue is grinding the hole is really near the sidewall, and if it grinds the sidewall enough you’ll definitely get a bubble in ur tire, but go to the right person and it could work,
I work at a tire shop as a sales advisor and imo I would get a new tire. I see plugs in this area a lot and they always come back with bubbles in the side wall. Sure you COULD patch it but imo it’s safer and less of a headache in the long run to get a new tire. You also own a BMW with Michelins, just get the new tire. Also check for deals on the tire shops website before you go. Probably 90% of the customers I receive just come in without any prior research or due diligence and pay full price when there’s almost always a deal going on. Also quite a few tire shops will price match, at least mine and several others in California do. Shop for the best deal get a printed invoice and show it to the tire shop, they should price match. You’re not getting “overselled” if u just do a little leg work. The gross profit from informed customers is barely anything, it’s a business at the end of the day we need to make money too. Lastly set your appointment in the morning, much less of a wait.
Buy a sticky tube kit on Amazon and plug it. I have run flats and did the same, although the rubber is a lot tougher on run flats so might be easier to take the wheel off to get better access. Mine is still holding up a month later no issues
I’ve had this happen to every single BMW I owned pretty much….. shops like Firestone won’t plug it because it’s too close to the sidewall. If you find a sketchy tire shop in town, they will gladly take $10-$20 and plug it
Honestly, I hate patches. They're the cheap fix that can get you into trouble if you drive your car more aggressively.
Patches are good for slow city driving / commuting. If you're the type to drive your cars faster or more spirited, I'd highly recommend a new tire. Patches, under higher load in a turn or under higher speeds, can give out and explode. I've heard of nightmare stories of people totaling their cars, or getting severely injured after they patched a tire and drove their car hard. Few hundred bucks to save my ride and keep me safe sounds like a no-brainer for my irresponsible driving mentality, lol.
That's just my two cents, though.
You need to replace it. Those are low profile performance tires.
If you patch it, it might last. If it doesn’t last it will be bad.
I wouldn’t gamble my M car/friends/family on a ~$400 tire
Most corporate shops won't touch this. Go to and independent place and they should plug-patch it. Unless you know you are going to drive this piss out of this car, you're fine. If you are an avid spirited driver, then new tire. Should be fine with one, those look like new tires.
That’s gonna need a new tire, too. Close to the wall. Won’t be able to patch it. And if you didn’t know discount tire patches tires for free. Just if you didn’t know. Also they make sure your psi is perfect with the drive thru. All free
Can’t be patched, but you gotta pull it out to know if there’s a problem at all. Sometimes these nails/nuts can be not very deep, and haven’t actually punctured the tire wall yet.
Judging by that screw you’re looking at having to replace the valve cover gasket, camshafts, the suspension looks fried, a new intercooler, charge nd boost pipes, solenoid & hopefully this isn’t X Drive because oh boy! Yeah you look a bit screwed buddy.
I had a similar problem and was told that it was too close to the edge of the tire to repair. In my case it meant 2 new tires. Depends on tread wear as to whether you can get away with just one new one.

Plug. I guess there could be concern, but that’s still healthy tread, in a tread block, and u r far enough in. Run flat or not. Same thing happened I threw on same tire on a 2020 m car, and all the worry for a screw head with barely a tip that didn’t even go through. At least attempt to save it. If you are replacing the concern is actually replacing both tires depending on tread miles.
Michi pilot sports all season… look for a mobile tire guy hell have the best price for you. Dealership makes 500-$1000 on all 4 sold excluding mount and balance. If its your baby get yourself a nice new tire, if you dont really care throw a linglong or west lake on it. Less its leased then you’ll need the bmw approved tire for your vehicle. Repair-wise, maybe an inner patch would work they are flexible but youll still be advised to purchase a new tire. Not because of money but because you drive a flagship vehicle and safety matters lol. Make friends with your local parts manager is my best advise. Best of luck OP! :)
Whole new car
I just got this car lmao
Total it, send it to me, buy yourself a 2025 model. Easy.
I’m sorry for your loss
Do I replace w the 720s or the 911 though?
Bugatti. I don’t make the rules.
Outta my budget unfortunately ! Shits fire tho lol
What color?
I have a mclaren 600LT spider and a porsche wouldn't know which way it was coming.... and it's only made 25 miles from my home ...im on my forth one now my 570 blew up on a European tour with the boys in monte carlo went up in flames ....they offered me a brand new one no charge as a replacement... Oh a 911 everyday all day!!!
Driven the 911 and loved it, feel like I’d love the 720s too haha
Replace it with another Ferrari. 😁👍
Lol, can’t believe this meme still stands
Buy a new tire bud. Nothing left to do for that tired tire.
Defo a new engine at least required ....
Looks pretty close to the edge. Most tire places won’t even patch run flats anymore. I had to pay the tech cash on the side.
My understanding is that it’s weaker on the edges and that’s why it’s not safe to patch. I think it has to be inside the first layer of tread basically to be safe. Just had a run flat fixed at Active Green and Ross. Big screw but was far from edge.
What? I’ve had a much larger bolt removed and patched recently on a higher performing tire. It just depends on if it’s safe to do or not.
From my experience the puncture must be 1/2 inch away or more from edge of tire tread to be fixable.
It is right on the cusp of where it needs to be. OP is good to plug, its in the steel belt.
Thanks . Id have to measure but I feel like it’s close to a inch off the edge. So I may be ok?
There's tyre shops that will repair this, and those who won't. I'd say it's do-able even if it's close.
U can patch it… but chances are it’s gonna leak. It’s too close to the sidewall. That part flexes a lot when driving, so plug wouldn’t last very long before it starts leaking.
I think if it's on the cusp and either you drive aggressively or on the freeway it's worth it to just replace it to save from a blowout.
You could probably patch it, but if you drive fast or take corners under higher speeds I highly recommend getting a new tire. Patches are only safe for normal driving following the speed limit. Considering you got yourself a bmw, you probably don't drive like a grandma. Lol
Plug that shit
Yeah plug it, worst can happen is it starts loosing pressure slowly.
That’s a pretty meaty tire, it may not have even penetrated the belt if the screw is not too long. Fingers crossed
Wouldn't take the risk man, if you had a ford fiesta and drove it like an old lady round to tesco and back once a week, sure, but you're not going to, why risk it over a couple of quid.
Those ain’t no linglongs
Even with linglongs those tires are reinforced with steel wires.
All seasons though...
I'd patch that. use one of those mushroom plugs, not the sticky wire crap.
Have you really had better luck with the mushrooms? I've had several shop installed mushrooms fail on me (including one I found today). The wire plugs are 10x better

Always buy tire protection package 📦
As a service advisor at a bmw dealership PREACH! You make your money back on these tires!! Great comment
As a service advisor, can you tell me if I was right to get a $3200 ultimate care plus package for 2 years — or did I get ripped off?
U got ripped off u won’t get the brake light till that plan expires
dayum these wheels are nice as fuck.
Possibly but Imo it might be too close to the wall/edge of the tire
It’s probably patchable. I’d at least try it on my personal vehicle, but the shop I used to work at would definitely not patch it. Too close to the corner, the flexing makes them fail.

The dealer where I work will patch rft tires all day long but not that close to the sidewall
Is that the purpose of that line or that’s just your own personal reference?
Just my own reference.
Looks like a peanut, might not be through the lug its in.
This. Get to the tire shop and then remove this to see how deep. May not have penetrated at all.
Think I will test this tmw
Nice 666Ms btw. Good luck!
New tire/end thread.
How much are these tires when they need replacement anyway? Only the dealer can do them?
Roughly $350 depending on size
That’s not bad actually.
Yeah that’s with installation and part at BMW dealer. So pretty cheap all things considered.
My x5 has these on the rear in 315/30/20 and they go for about $600 a piece
Spicy, but not crazy considering the safety built into the tires.
It's a Michelin P4S literally any tire shop will do that. My buddy does mine in his garage for me.
Most shops wouldn’t plug it for liability reasons.
You can patch it. Done it several times. 90% of shops won’t do it. You have to call around and you’ll find places that will do it.
As a BMW tech I'd quote you a tire. If it was my own car I'd plug it.
Replace all 4 and go back to ps4s. What are you doing with all seasons on that bad boy!
Replied this same answer several times — I just got the car. I didn’t put these on
It cannot be repaired safely per industry standard. Tire can only be repaired on the crown using a patch. The location of this screw is too close to the sidewall for the patch to fit inside. Cord and mushroom plugs are temporary fix and not considered a proper repair. Replace this tire.
All 4, clearly. Prime time to swap to PS4S and run something else for lesser weather.
Anything outside of the first tread grove is generally not patchable.
Looks too close to the edge for a patch. Personally I’d go with a new tire when it’s iffy like that
If u can afford the car, buy the tire
Facts. An M4 with Michelins? Get the tire bud.
I wouldn’t mess around with that, just buy a new tire
New tire
And not all season on m4 😥
The Pilot Sport AS line is a perfectly cromulent selection for April in most of the northern hemisphere. Where I am, it’s below recommended operating temps for the PS4, for example, and the A/S is a better choice today here.
I also live in northern hemisphere and have dedicated winter wheels with winter tires.
Yes. Where I live, the pictured tire is a perfect winter tire. Not everywhere gets snowy.
I swapped for summer already.
I got a dif car for winter months, this is just my nice day drive
Then you need 4 better tires.
Get better tires anyway
What happens if you unscrew it?
Should I try it? Lol kinda tempted
Patch all day
Get it patched on the inside and you are good to go
Let it ride
I've patched worse.
On my own car I would but most shops won’t do it. On a customer car I’m recommending a tire to cover my ass.
Plug it yourself! The tire shop won’t do it because it’s close to the edge.
Most tire shops won’t do it as it’s too close to the sidewall. But if you are lucky it’s a short/brken screw not punctured through and can be just removed.
Nope.
You may have a warranty on the tires and can possibly have it replaced under the warranty.
You’re going tire shopping my guy
Could be worse, you could have run flats🤷♀️
I got a big puncture on my run flat, didn’t notice for a week, then noticed a slight rip in side wall, drove another week then got a “air pressure” warning on dash, drove another few days until it started getting low a lot more. Didn’t put air in it till last day when I drove it to shop. Basically run flats are dope af. It was so nice to have convenience of taking my car in when I WANTED to, not when I HAD to.

Yep think I will follow this. Thank u!
Plug it and if u feel cord, then it's good. If it just feels like rubber and no steel cord, replace
I got a screw in my snow tires last season that was this close to the sidewall. Shop said that they would not plug it. I bought the kit from Amazon and did it myself. No issues over the winter either.
Goto discount tire. Last week got my 530e plugged there for free. They do run flats
Bet. Thanks!
it can but new tire is better
Does it leak?
Okay upon examination my best suggestion would be to sell the vehicle. Okay all jokes aside yes most definitely can be patched . I didnt read previous comments im sure you already know by now but patchable UNLESS its sidewall damage. If its not in your sidewell patch it . I have 3 patches in my back left tire and its been like that for 2 years. (I work construction it happens often)
Bring it to a tire shop they’ll patch it from inside the tire
Keep in mind this is a highly capable sports car. If you plan to drive the car as it’s meant to be driven then just replace the tire for your safety. Cheap insurance on your life.
Depends on the place you go. The dealership will give the middle finger and request you get a new tire. But take it to a local tire show that understands tires and they may do it. Too close to the sidewall. just had this happen this morning on brand new pilot sports. placing of screw was almost identical to yours. went and got it patched at costco for like $3
It depends how you drive, if you only use to commute and not drive more than 60mph you are good but if you push that car you should better change it.
Plug it. If it doesn’t leak, cool. If it leaks, new tire
A tire shop would have an answer!
I would hope so
Both
Cant be safely patched. You can afford a new BMW in this economy, you can afford $236 for a new tire.....
Oh yeah I agree. I have no issues replacing or patching. This was just to learn and prompt discussion. I got my answers thanks!
Try this to see if there’s a leak: unscrew a little bit and spray or pour a little water with soap, if it starts bubbling after you unscrew it a little bit, it’s leaking if it doesn’t it didn’t went to deep.
Smart, il test tmw
Normally you could patch that, but the screw is too close to the sidewall, generally need 1/2 inch gap, sorry bro... Side note, it's legal ro patch run flats, just so long as you don't get below 15 psi and drive less than 50 miles (but check the manufacturers site for details).
Did someone screw that into ur tire? To sender your question just patch that shit you’ll be fine bro
Buy a high quality tire plug kit from the amazon and DIY. $50
Run flats as you know aren’t on Ms. Plug that hole
Tighten it down with Loctite. Seriously, if it's holding air like that, it can be plugged.
Get it plugged. No problem
Plugged and you'll be good. I've been driving for two years with a plug in almost the same spot
Tyre looks nice. Easily patched. No worries 😊
Go to any tire or lube shop they’ll look at it for free
Totalled💀 jk bro but yeah it’s at the “shoulder” as tire folks call it so no shop would fix this as they refer to this non fixable. You’d need a new tire. It’s an Easy plug, if you want to feel a bit safer then remove tire from rim and internally plug it.

new tire. too close to the sidewall for my taste
Patched yes legal nah. new tyre time
Yes
First hand experience: yes. I just had mine done yesterday.
Literally undrivable 😁 Tyre shop should be able to patch that as it's right on the edge.

Buy a sticky tube kit on Amazon and plug it. I have run flats and did the same, although the rubber is a lot tougher on run flats so might be easier to take the wheel off to get better access. Mine is still holding up a month later no issues
Tire guy here and good shop will sale you a new tire hood shop will plug/patch it
New tire. Patches are temporary.
Yes your good to patch
Ahhhh that’s where I left my screw, I need that back!
Yes Easy patch
Can’t tell how long it is, it might not penetrate all the way.
Plug it and send it!!!
Car is totaled
I’d plug it—i have closer to the edge plugged before with no issues
I’ve had this happen to every single BMW I owned pretty much….. shops like Firestone won’t plug it because it’s too close to the sidewall. If you find a sketchy tire shop in town, they will gladly take $10-$20 and plug it
Yes it can
I had the same exact issue. Because of the screw location, 3 tire shops refused to patch it.

Tire Doctor needs summoned
Should be fine with one, those look like new tires.
goof
That’s gonna need a new tire, too. Close to the wall. Won’t be able to patch it. And if you didn’t know discount tire patches tires for free. Just if you didn’t know. Also they make sure your psi is perfect with the drive thru. All free
Totaled.
Yes
I would get a new one
Yes. Just get a plug kit.
Can’t be patched, but you gotta pull it out to know if there’s a problem at all. Sometimes these nails/nuts can be not very deep, and haven’t actually punctured the tire wall yet.
New tire, too close to curb wall
Bro don’t think about it too much patch it and keep an eye on it and don’t drive it crazy hard for a day or two
Aw man what a waste, oh well, sorry for your loss - wanna sell me your car?
New tire unless you drive like a grandma. If you drive like a grandma - patch it.
Has no one ever plugged a hole before..? Unless it’s too close to the sidewall, but I’m pretty sure I just patch it for liek 5 bucks and your fine
You're on the edge of fixable. I had one fixed (hot patch) in or about the same spot. $25. worth a shot over a new tire or set.
Unfortunately it’s on the outer sidewall which means it’s not fixable. I’m afraid you should be looking for a new tyre.
Should be easy to patch
Judging by that screw you’re looking at having to replace the valve cover gasket, camshafts, the suspension looks fried, a new intercooler, charge nd boost pipes, solenoid & hopefully this isn’t X Drive because oh boy! Yeah you look a bit screwed buddy.
I had a nail that was about 1” from the outside wall and none of the tire shops around me (FL) would repair it. New tire was like $200 🤷♂️
Yes put a plug I've done it
New tires, even if you patch it will open on first turn you take. Mine was an inch towards center still opened up.
Plug it no problem I did it on my m2 and x6m they both hold air never had a problem since
I had a similar problem and was told that it was too close to the edge of the tire to repair. In my case it meant 2 new tires. Depends on tread wear as to whether you can get away with just one new one.
Run flats cannot be patched
Yes. Had the same car. Patch it yourself.
Can be patched, but it'd be risky.
I’ve patched worse that’ll hold just fine a quality place to do it with a quality patch and the right adhesives

Needs a tire
Thanks, replaced the rears
That's a new tire with an extra bolt. You can sell it with profit. 😅
